Alfred Molina is starring in the upcoming Prime Video series "Three Pines." It's an adaptation of the beloved and best-selling mystery novel series by Louise Penny, focused on Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. There are eight episodes in the season, though the novel series is 17 books long. That's a lot of story to mine from. It's set in Canada, and the production was filmed in both Montreal and rural Quebec.
This is the first Canada-based production for Left Bank, which is the production company behind the Netflix series "The Crown," about the royal family of the United Kingdom. Production began on the Canadian Amazon Original drama series in September 2021. If you haven't heard of Armande Gamache, it's time to start reading, and watching when the series premieres. The Washington Post named Gamache the most beloved fictional detective in a 2021 reader survey. That puts him ahead of both Hercule Poirot from Agatha...

Alfred Molina is to star in Amazon police drama series Three Pines, which comes from The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures.
The Spider-Man star is to play Chief Inspector Armand Gamache in the Canadian original, which was first revealed by Deadline in May 2020.
The eight-part series has begun production in Montreal and rural Quebec. It will film through to December and launch on Amazon in a number of territories including Canada, the U.S. and UK.
Based on Louise Penny’s book series, Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec is a man who sees things that others do not: the light between the cracks, the mythic in the mundane, and the evil in the seemingly ordinary. As he investigates a spate of murders in Three Pines, a seemingly idyllic village, he discovers long-buried secrets and faces a few of his own ghosts.

Though there haven’t been a lot of movies about it, the tentacles of Italy-based organized crime duly reach above Scorsese territory to the even-more-frequently-Frozen North. If not for the French dialogue, however, you wouldn’t necessarily know “Mafia Inc” were taking place in Quebec, or even Canada, so familiar and insular is the brutal syndicate business depicted here. This solid mob drama is based on journalists Andre Cedilot and Andre Noel’s best-selling nonfiction tome of the same name, which had the self-explanatory subtitle “The Long, Bloody Reign of Canada’s Sicilian Clan.”
Somewhat fictionalizing a few elements from that decades-spanning exposé, “Mafia Inc” isn’t the most stylistically flamboyant, violent or memorable specimen within its screen genre. But it does provide an engrossing thicket of criminal intrigue that ultimately comes down to a conflict between two families, one headed by veteran Italian star Sergio Castellitto, the other by native son Marc-André Grondin.

"Godfather or Pope, I don't want to see you or your family of crooks!" Film Movement has released the official US trailer for mafia crime drama Mafia Inc, made in Montreal by filmmaker Quebecois filmmaker Daniel Grou. Set in Montreal in the 90s, the film tells the story of the Gamache family, tailors for the Paternò Mafia family for generations. Vince works on behalf of Frank the godfather with his eldest son, and seeks to earn his stripes by impressing him, but goes too far and ends up starting a war. Based on the book with the subtitle: "The Long, Bloody Reign of Canada's Sicilian Clan." Starring Marc-André Grondin as Vince, along with Sergio Castellitto, Cristina Rosato, Benz Antoine, Mylène Mackay, Domenic Di Rosa, Gilbert Sicotte, Mark Day, Pina Di Blasi, Rafael Petardi, & Ali Hassan. This actually looks pretty good, with all the usual mafia tropes, but still cool to...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “The Best Laid Plans,” the midseason finale of the sixth season of “Vikings.”
The Rus have officially invaded Vikings territory. On Wednesday night’s midseason finale of the History series, Ivar (Alex Hogh Andersen) and Oleg (Danila Kozlovsky) landed at King Harald Finehair’s (Peter Franzén) doorstep, where he, Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) and the rest of the remaining Vikings waited to do battle. Unfortunately for them the remining territories refused to answer their call for help, and they were easily outnumbered by the Rus.
By the end of the bloody episode Bjorn had fallen to his brother’s sword and Finehair was down for the count, but according to creator Michael Hirst viewers shouldn’t assume anything. “You don’t know whether Bjorn is dead or not,” he tells Variety.
When the show returns later this year for the final 10 episodes of the series,...

I hoped that this episode would largely redeem the first half of season five. It is, after all, what the entire thing has been building toward: the final fight between Ivar and Lagertha - let’s face it, that’s really the core of the conflict as Ivar and the episode make clear. It’s no accident that the first two flashbacks we see are focused on Lagertha and Ivar. They are the frame in which all the rest happens.
Unfortunately, if anything, this episode amplifies the problems of the half season it bookends.
First, there’s the structure and pacing.

Film fests such as the Toronto Int. Film Festival afford us the best of opportunities to get instantly familiar with new faces in the world of cinema. With last week’s The Conversation, I gave you a rundown of the talent behind the camera with the 2015 Tiff Top Ten New Voices. Today, we look back at the best performances from fresh and relatively new crop of actors and actresses. Almost evenly split genderwise, we’ll surely look back on these early performances from these youthful players as the moment where they received their big break and if they’re not familiar now, they surely will be in the coming years. In deliberating this top ten list, I focused on offerings either unique to the festival or near concurrent premieres in Locarno and Venice.

19-2? Precinct 19, Car 2. It’s simple as that. A series title that upholds a long-standing tradition of cop shows throughout the years that use designators in their titles, from the likes of Car 54 Where Are You? to the more recent 10-8: Officers on Duty. 19-2 also continues the more modern tradition of the gritty cop drama, heavily influenced by the likes of cable TV dramas The Shield and The Wire – with the same hardened sensibilities, only this time with a Canadian twist…
Interestingly, 19-2 – as seen on this DVD – is not the original version of the show. This particular iteration of the cop drama is actually an Englich-language remake of the series, which was originally set in Montreal and filmed entirely in French.

Miraculum
Written by Gabriel Sabourin
Directed by Daniel Grou
Canada, 2014
Daniel Grou (affectionately known as Podz by the Quebec public) got his start in television, directing a number of very successful shows for Radio-Canada, the national channel. In 2010 he made his cinematic debut with two films and has since been working exclusively for the big screen. His most recent film, Miraculum, finds it’s aesthetic routes in television though, often feeling more like a creaky pilot than a full fledged film. While Podz and his actors give it their all in this film, they are let down by the script which is trite, obvious and poorly constructed.
Films about intersecting fates rarely gel very well. For every Magnolia (which is flawed, but doesn’t collapse under the weight of it’s own hubris) there are dozens of copycat films that are varying degrees of unbearable. The narrative just never comes together,...

Canadian Screen Awards 2013 nominations: War Witch rules The Genie Awards are dead, long live the Canadian Screen Awards! Well, in truth, the Genie Awards aren’t exactly dead; they’ve just been transmogrified, along with Canadian television’s Gemini Awards, into the aforementioned Canadian Screen Awards, organized by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. But Genie or Canadian Screen, once again a Québécois production dominates the nominations roster. (Photo: Rachel Mwanza in Kim Nguyen’s War Witch.) Kim Nguyen’s Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award nominee Rebelle / War Witch, the story of a (very) young African rebel fighter, received a total of 12 Canadian Screen Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Berlin Film Festival’s Best Actress Rachel Mwanza), Best Supporting Actor (Serge Kanyinda), and Best Original Screenplay (Nguyen). War Witch follows in the heels of recent Quebec-made Genie Award powerhouses and eventual Best Picture winners such...

L’Affaire Dumont
Directed by Podz
Written by Danielle Danserau
Canada, 2012
It was only a matter of time before director Daniel Grou, better known to Québec movie and television buffs as Podz, an actor Marc-André Grondin worked together on a project. Over the past few years, each has experienced a rise in popularity amongst the public as well as increasing critical acclaim for their work. In many respects, while Denis Villeneuve arguably is still the Québec filmmaker whose name resonates most loudly at the moment, Podz is certainly not far behind. As for Grondin, ever since his standout performance in Jean-Marc Vallé’s C.R.A.Z.Y. back in 2005, he has been one of the most in-demand male actors in the province. Their first collaboration is L’Affaire Dumont, a familial and court room drama inspired by the real life nightmare experience by one Michel Dumont in the early to mid 1990s, when...

The anticipated web series La reine rouge, which was written by novelist Patrick Senécal, will premiere on Wednesday May 4.
The web series is made of 8 episodes which all last at least 10 minutes.
On each Wednesday, an episode will be put online at 11:59 Pm. However, viewers can watch each episode for $0,99 or the whole first season for $5. The point of this is to finance the production of the series' second season and to make sure that youngsters don't see La reine rouge.
The web series La reine rouge will follow Michelle Beaulieu (Véronique Tremblay), a girl who escaped from her suburban home. Those who read the novel (or have seen the film) 5150, rue des Ormes remembers that she ran away following a killing rampage that occured in her family's house.
Now that she's in Montreal, Michelle will try to fit in. She builds friendships, looks for a job and even sees a psychologist.

Unlike last year's two filmmaker/film horse race between Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique and Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mere, this year it was all "Villeneuve" and "Incendies". Repeating his wins in all the same categories it won at the Canadian Oscars (Genies) this week (this includes Editing, Screenplay, Best Cinematography by the excellent André Turpin, Best Actress in Lubna Azabal (who forced here co-star Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin to give her own thank you speech). These wins more than makes up for his loss last year when Villeneuve won the Best Director honor for Polytechnique, but lost in the Best Film category to J'ai tué ma mere. The predictable 13th edition also saw a Genie-Jutra winner from Barney's Version and in the Animated Film category, the Nfb (naturally) supported Theodore Ushev added a Jutra to his Genie for Lipsett Diaries. Best Film/meilleur film 10 1/2 - Pierre Gendron (Zoofilms) Les amours imaginaires - Xavier Dolan,...

“Saw” series producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg return for more of the same with “The Tortured”, a film which, as its title suggests revolves mainly around scenes of pain and violence. The film was directed by Robert Lieberman, mainly known for his television work on series such as “Dexter” and “The Dead Zone”, though who some viewer may remember for helming the excellent alien abduction thriller “Fire in the Sky” way back in 1993. Although the thought of yet another slice of cinematic sadism may not exactly be inspiring, the film does at least take a vague stab at working in some moral issues, with a plot similar to Daniel Grou’s recent and rather more extreme “7 Days”. Having played at Frightfest 2010 in London, the film now arrives on region 2 DVD via E1, coming with the usual handful of interviews and a behind the scenes featurette for those who care.

After a couple of light on horror weeks, we are finally treated to a bumper crop of new releases. Headlining the week is Frozen, which is just what we in Southern California need to stave off our current heat wave. A couple of oldies but goodies are out, too, as Madman celebrates its Happy 30th Birthday and the original King Kong comes to Blu-ray. Fangoria's eight FrightFest titles bow as well.
Frozen
Directed by Adam Green
In Frozen (review), Adam Green has crafted a potent combination of absolute terror and compelling human drama that will stick with you long after you've left the theatre or turned off the DVD. One thing's for sure: The next time your friends invite you on a ski weekend, odds are you'll try to convince them to head to the beach instead. Frozen stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers.
Buy the Blu-ray or the regular DVD.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"The Thin Red Line" (1998)
Directed by Terrence Malick
Released by Criterion Collection
No, you won't be getting the hours of deleted Adrien Brody or George Clooney footage from Malick's World War II epic, but this Criterion version is most certainly an upgrade from the previous bare-bones DVD edition with 14 minutes of outtakes, new interviews with Sean Penn and composer Hans Zimmer, among others from the cast and crew, an audio commentary with cinematographer John Toll, production designer Jack Fisk and producer Grant Hill and more.
"7 Days" (2010)
Directed by Daniel Grou
Released by Mpi Home Video
French Canadian horror author Patrick Senécal adapts his own novel to celluloid about a doctor (Claude Legault) who intercepts the man (Remy Girard) who raped and murdered his young daughter and turns the tables on him in a cabin in the woods. With a résumé including TV series like "Vampire High,...

If I had the holiday time left, I’d be booking a trip to España right about now. The 43rd annual Sitges kicks off on October 7th and their line up so far is impressive. Damned impressive.
In competition are Gregg Araki’s Kaboom (teaser, stills), Christopher Smith’s Black Death (review), Jalmari Helander’s Rare Exports (trailer), Quentin Dupieux’s Rubber (clip) and Takashi Miike’s 13 Assassins among many others. In competition in the Panorama section are another great set of films including Shion Sono’s Cold Fish (trailer), Takeshi Kitano’s Outrage (trailer), Jim Mickle’s Stake Land (trailer) and Srdjan Spasojevic’s A Serbian Film (review).
If those titles aren’t enough, there’s loads more including Rob Stefaniuk’s vampire musical road trip film Suck (review, trailer), James Wan’s Insidious (clip), Adam Green’s Frozen (trailer), Black Lightning (trailer), Super (clip), The Vanishing on 7th...

Toronto -- Montreal's Festival of New Cinema is to open with Quebec director Daniel Grou's latest thriller, "10 1⁄2," and close with Denis Cote's Locarno award winner "Curling."
Grou, a veteran Quebec TV director, earlier this year screened his debut feature, the revenge thriller "7 Days," at Sundance.
"10 1⁄2" portrays a troubled young boy of the same age, played by Robert Naylor, whose violent behavior finally receives treatment when he meets a social worker (Claude Legault).
The film is produced by Pierre Gendron, with Claude Lalonde writing the script.
The 39th edition of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema, to run from Oct. 13 to 24, will close with Cote's "Curling" after it receives a North American premiere in Toronto.

The organizers of Montreal's Festival du nouveau cinéma (Fnc) announced that 10 1/2, the second feature film by Canadian director Daniel Grou, will open this festival. The Fnc will take place in Montreal from October 13 to 24.
The film was produced by Pierre Gendron and was scripted by Claude Lalonde (Les 3 p'tits cochons).
It tells the story of Tommy (Robert Naylor), a ten-years-old-and-a-half boy. Because he is prone to have a violent behaviour, Tommy has always been handled by social services. However, Gilles (Claude Legault), his social educator, believes that Tommy's life can be put back on track.
The film also stars Mélanie Desjardins-Chavaudier, Eugénie Beaudry and Albert Kwan.
Finally, no release date has been announced for this film.

Director: Daniel Grou. Review: Adam Wing. 90 minutes can feel like a long time, especially if you’re in the company of Dr Bruno Hamel. Daniel Grou takes us on a dark and depressing journey into the heart of retribution with French thriller 7 Days. Dr Hamel (Claude Legault) lives a peaceful existence with his wife (Fanny Mallette) and daughter, but their happy home is turned upside down when the girl is left to walk to school on her own. Choosing instead to spend some ‘quality time’ with his wife, he somewhat typically falls asleep, missing the call from school asking about her whereabouts. It’s only when a classmate shows up at their door with his daughter’s homework that the alarm bells start ringing. Happiness is shattered when her body is discovered, raped and murdered in a nearby field. Bruno struggles to come to terms with the loss, and the...

Director Daniel Grou’s intense and at times disturbing French Canadian horror thriller 7 Days (aka ‘Les 7 jours du talion’) is heading for the UK and there’s a short but grimly dark trailer to go with it. Scroll down the page to see it, but word of warning it’s not overly work safe. 7 Days is released in the UK on August 23rd, and those in the Us yet to have their fill of torture porn, can pick it up on DVD in September. The Canadian, French language production “7 Days” (“Les Sept Jours du Talion”) is a film which has been making a stir amongst fans of tough cinema following its well received and much talked about debut at Sundance in 2010. The film was helmed by television director Daniel Grou (who also goes by the odd name of Podz, and who was responsible for episodes of “Vampire High” and “The Hunger”), and was adapted for the screen by author Patrick Senécal from his own novel. Given its high concept torture premise, the film has unsurprisingly drawn comparisons with popular hits such as “Saw” and “Hostel”, as well as, more tellingly, the likes of Lars von Trier’s “Antichrist” and Michael Haneke”s “Funny Games”. Brave viewers can now judge for themselves, as the film arrives on region 2 DVD via E1 Entertainment. The plot doesn’t waste much time in getting down to business, as...
