Exclusive: Leland Douglas, the screenwriter behind the David Gordon Green comedy Nutcrackers, has signed with Thruline Entertainment for management.
Marking Ben Stiller’s first star vehicle in a few years, Nutcrackers has him playing the work-obsessed Mike, who must reluctantly travel to rural Ohio to look after his four rambunctious nephews after their parents die in a car accident. What begins as a three-day trip to find foster care turns into weeks of farm-life mayhem – and the realization that he doesn’t need to find them a home, they’ve found one for him.
The film is coming off of its premiere as the opening film of the Toronto Film Festival, where it sold to Hulu for eight figures, in the first splashy deal of the fest. Also starring Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker and Toby Hussles, pic is produced by Rivulet’s Rob Paris and Mike Witherill, and Rough House’s Nate Meyer.

Looking back, the early nineties were the best of times and worst of times for Batman fans. In 1989, fans got their first big-budget Hollywood Batman movie, followed by the 1992 sequel Batman Returns. Both of these films boasted A-list talent and made huge money. But they weren’t really interested in Batman, at least not the guy that comic book readers loved.
But 1992 saw the launch of Batman: The Animated Series, a cartoon that gave fans some of the best ever tales of the Dark Knight, in any media. Created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, The Animated Series took some visual cues from Burton’s movies, especially in its designs for Catwoman and the Penguin, but it was grounded in the Bronze Age comics by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams as well as 1940s cinema.

Variety’s annual Showrunners Dinner presented by A+E Studios on Thursday night gathered writers recognized on the publication’s annual TV Producers Impact List, as well as several of this year’s Emmy nominees. In addition, megaproducer Chuck Lorre was honored with Variety’s first Norman Lear Award.
Held at Merois, on the rooftop of the Pendry West Hollywood, the Variety Showrunners Dinner included a very funny acceptance speech by Lorre, who pointed out some of the similarities — but more humorously, the differences — between the two icons.
“I think everyone here understands the enormity and significance of Norman Lear’s body of work,” Lorre began. “So in accepting this award, I don’t think it’s false modesty to take a moment and focus on the very large differences between his career and my own. For starters, Norman Lear began his career writing for Hollywood legends like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Leave it to a sitcom vet like Melissa Rauch to remind the industry that everything old can be new again. After persuading Warner Bros. TV to dust off the Night Court IP and revive it for NBC, multi-cams are suddenly hot again, with every broadcast network — and even a few streamers like Netflix are putting studio audience comedies in development.
While no one is straight-up abandoning single-cams — the success of CBS’ Ghosts and ABC’s Abbott Elementary have certainly made sure of that — there’s no beating the cost-effectiveness of one of TV’s most tried and true genres.
“Everybody had a hunch they should probably be doing more of them,” says one high-powered comedy agent. “Night Court is a good sign there is an appetite for that. Everything I’m hearing out of CBS, for example, is that...

CBS’ praised Mom — the network’s longest-running comedy series on the air — will end its run after the current eighth season. Mom‘s series finale has been set for May 6 in its Thursday 9 p.m. time period.
This is the last season of Mom’s two-year pickup the Chuck Lorre-produced multi-camera comedy received in 2019. Also coming up at the end of this season was the current contract for star Allison Janney, who became the series’ sole lead after the exit of Anna Faris last summer.
Eight seasons in, Mom remains a solid ratings performer and an anchor of CBS’ Thursday comedy block. Currently Mom is CBS’ No. 4 comedy behind The Neighborhood and Lorre’s Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola. (The Neigbrhood and Bob Hearts Abishola were renewed earlier today; a pickup for Young Sheldon is expected.)

A Google search for the star of the CBS comedy “Bob Hearts Abishola,” Folake Olowofoyeku, will result in video interviews like this one, in which the American interviewer struggles to pronounce the Nigerian actress and musician’s last name. But she’s never considered changing it. If she did, she certainly wouldn’t be the first to do so. Ben Kingsley was born Krishna Pandit Bhanji; Natalie Portman was Neta-Lee Hershlag; and musician Bruno Mars was Peter Gene Hernandez. And in her “defiance,” Olowofoyeku is forcing the industry to meet her on her own terms — although she admits that she has been pressured.
“There have been a couple of agents when I was in New York who suggested or advised that I change my name,” she said. “There was an agent that I was with who I liked, so she was the only one whose opinion could have possibly swayed me.

David’s disinterest in popular music – and rock n’ roll music specifically - was no secret. Cornered and trapped in a one-sided conversation with the passionate and gregarious television writer and music fan Eddie Gorodetsky, the co-creator of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm was anxious to escape the conversation. He suggested to Gorodetsky his interest in discussing the vagaries of Bob Dylan’s mercurial career - and the rock n’ roll world in general - would be better served by engaging in a chat with Curb writer-director Charles. Gorodetsky did just that. He soon discovered both he and Charles were huge Dylan fans, the two discussing the often mysterious singer-songwriter’s career at length.

Anna Faris is leaving the CBS multi-cam sitcom “Mom” ahead of the show’s upcoming eighth season.

In a major shakeup, CBS’ sitcom Mom is losing one of its two title characters. Anna Faris will not be returning to the series for its upcoming eighth season, leaving Allison Janney as the sole lead.
The move is surprising. Both Faris and Janney are in the middle of two-year contracts they signed in spring 2019 after lengthy negotiations. Their new deals secured a two-year renewal for the Chuck Lorre comedy through Season 8.
I hear Faris’ exit was finalized early into the show’s hiatus, and the writers have been writing the new season without her character, Christy. Her absence will be addressed in the upcoming season, which is slated to start production September 14 in Los Angeles.

The move is surprising. Both Faris and Janney are in the middle of two-year contracts they signed in spring 2019 after lengthy negotiations. Their new deals secured a two-year renewal for the Chuck Lorre comedy through Season 8.

It’s no secret that the U.K. has lost some of its most talented to seemingly greener pastures in Hollywood, especially black British performers, for whom there’s a scarcity of opportunity back home. The so-called black British invasion has been well-documented and scrutinized over the years, so much that veteran actor Lenny Henry warned British broadcasters in 2014, that Britain was “haemorrhaging” black talent to the States. Comedian, writer, and actress Gina Yashere is a case in point.

Eddie Gorodetsky, a producer and writer who has long worked closely with Chuck Lorre, is striking out on his own with a multi-camera comedy series in the works at CBS.
“Extended Family” is described by the network as an unconventional family ensemble comedy. Written and produced by Gorodetsky along with Warner Bros. TV, it follows a brother and sister who are at ground zero when a family secret sends shock waves through an already dysfunctional family.
Gorodetsky most recently co-created the freshman CBS series “Bob ♥ Abishola” along with Lorre, Gina Yashere and Alan J. Higgins. Prior to that, he’s worked with Lorre almost exclusively for 20 years. He, Lorre and Gemma Baker co-created “Mom,” which stars Allison Janney and Ana Faris on CBS. Gorodetsky also worked on several of Lorre’s hit series, including “The Kominsky Method,” “Two and a Half Men,” and “The Big Bang Theory.” Gorodetsky has also...

Exclusive: One of Chuck Lorre’s closest associates is going solo. CBS is developing Extended Family, a multi-camera comedy from Mom and Bob ♥ Abishola co-creator Eddie Gorodetsky and Warner Bros. TV.

And for his next act, Chuck Lorre will be pivoting to total and complete earnestness.
The powerhouse producer behind “Two and a Half Men” and the recently departed “Big Bang Theory” has now thrown his weight behind “Bob Hearts Abishola,” an unabashedly sweet comedy about a divorced socks salesman (Billy Gardell) having a heart attack and falling for his Nigerian nurse (Folake Olowofoyeku). At first, Abishola mostly just tolerates Bob’s affections, treating his admiration as a silly side effect of a genuinely harrowing experience. But with a little time — and a lot of encouragement from her aunt (Shola Adewusi), uncle (Barry Shabaka Henley (Uncle Tunde), and co-workers (Vernee Watson and Gina Yashere) — Abishola decides to give Bob a bit more of a chance.
There are so many ways “Bob Hearts Abishola” could have gone wrong. It could have treated Bob’s crush on Abishola as a one-sided obsession, rendered...

The question of whether multi-camera sitcoms are a dying breed isn’t a new one. The few remaining purveyors of the format, including “The Big Bang Theory” executive producer Chuck Lorre, have been asked that question for years.
But even as Lorre ventures into the single-camera world with such shows as the Golden Globe-winning “The Kominsky Method” and has gotten a taste of success in that arena, he’s not turning his back on multicam.
Lorre, along with Al Higgins, Eddie Gorodetsky and Gina Yashere, is behind “Bob Hearts Abishola,” a new multicam sitcom for CBS this fall that aims to balance laughs — yes, the studio audience is there, chuckling along — with the serious subject of immigration and tolerance.
Whether or not “Bob Hearts Abishola” will be awards fodder remains to be seen — there’s a fart joke within the first five minutes of the pilot, after all — but it...

There are always disappointments before UpFronts, but there is a lot of excitement generated, too.
Some of that excitement comes from renewals, but the real groove sets when we get our first look at new shows.
Now you can get a taste of everything coming to CBS!
All Rise is a new courthouse drama that follows the chaotic, hopeful and sometimes absurd lives of its judges, prosecutors and public defenders, as they work with bailiffs, clerks and cops to get justice for the people of Los Angeles amidst a flawed legal process.
This fall, watch new episodes of All Rise on Mondays at 9/8c on CBS and CBS All Access.
Among them is newly appointed Judge Lola Carmichael (Simone Missick), a highly regarded and impressive deputy district attorney who doesn’t intend to sit back on the bench in her new role, but instead leans in, immediately pushing the boundaries...

Chuck Lorre has a new comedy coming to CBS this fall titled “Bob ❤ Abishola.” If you couldn’t tell right away on your own, a name like that is going to require TV reporters who plan on covering the sitcom to either become very emoji friendly in their copy or write out “(Hearts)” over and over. TheWrap’s TV reporters can confirm that neither of these options is ideal.
So we asked CBS Entertainment president, Kelly Kahl, and CBS Entertainment senior executive vice president of programming, Thom Sherman, why they did this to us during a press briefing ahead of the network’s upfront presentation Wednesday.
Here’s what they said:
Kelly Kahl: To be perfectly honest, Chuck Lorre really likes this title.

CBS has picked up three dramas and four comedies for the 2019-2020 season.
The dramas are “Evil” from Robert and Michelle King, the spinoff “FBI: Most Wanted,” and the legal drama “All Rise,” formerly known as “Courthouse.” The comedies are the multi-cams “Broke,” “Carol’s Second Act,” and “Bob Hearts Abishola” and the single-cam “The Unicorn.”
Interestingly, two former stars of the now canceled Marvel-Netflix series “Luke Cage” will appear in CBS’ new shows, albeit on different series. The Big Bang Theory is already set to end its run with its current 12th season. But could CBS lose both of Chuck Lorre’s long-running comedy series?
The Lorre-executive produced Mom is in the midst of its sixth season, the last under stars Anna Faris and Allison Jamey’s original contracts.
I hear CBS would like to get another season of the praised sitcom, which is currently the network’s #3 comedy series among total viewers and adults 18-49 behind Lorre’s Big Bang and Young Sheldon, and could move to #2 after the end of Big Bang. It finished last season as the third most watched comedy in broadcast TV and as a Top 5 comedy in 18-49 and 25-54.
In preparation for a possible renewal, I hear producing studio Warner Bros. TV over the past month or so reached out to Faris and Janney about new deals. I hear the...

CBS has renewed praised comedy series Mom for a sixth season. The pickup makes it a clean sweep for top comedy producer Chuck Lorre, with all three of his CBS shows already renewed for next season five weeks before the May upfronts. Mom joins veteran The Big Bang Theory, which will be headed into its 12th season, and hot newcomer, Big Bang spinoff Young Sheldon, which was renewed for Season 2. As Lorre often does on his series, word is that he delivered the news of Mom‘s renewal at the multi-camera comedy’s wrap party last night.
Mom, starring Anna Faris as well as Emmy — and now Oscar — winner Allison Janney, recently marked its 100th episode. It is currently averaging over 11 million viewers and is the third most-watched comedy in broadcast television, behind only Lorre’s two other shows, The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, and is a top...

Comedy mastermind Chuck Lorre was an auteur all along. It just took “Mom” to make you realize it.
The CBS comedy, starring Allison Janney and Anna Faris as a mother and daughter both in recovery, is by far the most personal of Lorre’s career. The creator behind shows such as “Grace Under Fire,” “Dharma & Greg,” “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory” has been open about his own path to sobriety, a topic that is central to “Mom.”
“Broken people trying to repair their lives, I can relate to that,” Lorre recently told IndieWire. “I know a lot of people that can relate to the comedy in the repair business of a person’s life. I think we’re all in the process of doing a little mending.”
Lorre is still best known for “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory,” two megahits...
