As a young dancer growing up in North Carolina, “West Side Story” star Ariana DeBose did not have a plethora of pop culture role models from whom she could draw inspiration. “There is an abundance of examples of white lived experiences. There just weren’t many with my specific lived experience,” said DeBose, who identifies as Afro-Latina. “There weren’t a ton of examples that I could look to, to see myself reflected in the work.”
One movie that did make an impact on her was “Center Stage,” the beloved cult classic from 2000 about twenty-something dancers competing in a cut-throat New York City ballet school. Making her big-screen debut, Zoe Saldaña played one of those dancers, a rebellious Boston girl destined for prima ballerina stardom. “Seeing a beautiful melanated queen doing ballet and doing it beautifully, doing it well — that was very influential on my childhood,” DeBose, 31, told TheWrap. “(Saldaña...

His death was announced on Facebook by his nephew Jeffrey Lesser. “He was a huge presence in my life and so many others,” Lesser wrote. “With him goes an era of old Broadway that is dying out. He lived an amazing and full life and brought so many of us along for the ride.”
Soloway, whose life and career was chronicled in the 2019 documentary Leonard Soloway’s Broadway, had a hand in dozens of Broadway’s most notable productions since the 1960s, from his job as house or general manager for 1961’s How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, 1967’s one-woman show Marlene Dietrich, the 1976 revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? starring Colleen Dewhurst and Ben Gazzara and...

The dancer also appeared in classic films like “Carousel”
Jacques d’Amboise, a famed dancer and choreographer with the New York City Ballet who also appeared in classic musical films such as “Carousel” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” has died. He was 86.
His daughter and dancer Charlotte d’Amboise told The New York Times he died Sunday at his home in Manhattan after a stroke.
At just 15 years old, d’Amboise left school and was recruited by the New York City Ballet, quickly becoming one of the stars of the company and helping to erase stereotypes about male ballet dancers with both his elegance and masculinity on stage.
By 1953, he was named principal dancer and had 24 roles by George Balanchine, including the seminal “Apollo.” He retired from the company just ahead of his 50th birthday in 1984, but he would continue to choreograph routines, including 17 works for the City Ballet and others for the National Dance Institute.

The late Ann Reinking is being honored with a scholarship in her name.
The $5,000 grant from Off the Lane will be awarded annually to a young dancer moving to New York City to help them in their artistic endeavors. Reinking herself moved from Seattle to New York City to pursue dancing.
Reinking died in December at age 71. She got her acting start in a Seattle Opera House production of “Bye Bye Birdie” in 1965. She is best known for playing Roxie Hart in 1977’s “Chicago,” replacing Gwen Verdon. She reprised the part for musical’s 1996 revival.
“I believe Annie would have loved having her name on the Ann Reinking Scholarship Program,” Reinking’s husband Peter Talbert said in a statement. “Like so many young dancers coming to New York, she struggled to find a foothold in a strange city. Short of money and friends, Annie persevered and found her way forward,...

In this episode Chicago's Charlotte d'Amboise started dancing with Balanchine at 8 years old and hasn't stayed still since. It was a moment in a character class where she felt in her soul 'there I am' that began her path to Broadway. An admitted workhorse, Charlotte most enjoys working with people whose passion is as great as hers and more. She has always had a sense of self and aware the she is her instrument, her instrument is art, and art must change. Along with this self awareness, she is facing the heartbreak that her body can't do what it used to, but this is inspiring her new focus re-invention.

"Chronicle" and "Carrie" actor Alex Russell has scored the starring role in AMC and Scott Free's upcoming drama pilot "Galyntine".
The fantasy-action adventure series is set in a postapocalyptic future without technology where a band of survivors is forced to adapt to isolation and the challenges of their new world.
Russell plays Roman, an orphan who was unofficially adopted by his best friend Aethys’ family. He hopes to marry Aethys’ sister Essyn to make his membership in the family official.
A very public victory appears to cement his status as a future leader of the colony, but a twist of fate (and a betrayal) set him on a different, more dangerous path. Catherine Dent and Charlotte D'Ambroise also star.
David Mackenzie ("Starred Up," "Young Adam") will direct the pilot and executive produce alongside Greg Nicotero. Jason Cahill ("Halt and Catch Fire") penned the pilot.

Daytime Soap's Eileen Fulton Joins 'My Fair Lady' Cast At UConn
Fulton will play Mrs. Higgins in the Connecticut Repertory Theatre production of "My Fair Lady," starring Terrence Mann and choreographed by Charlotte d'Amboise. Richard Ruiz (Nicely Nicely in Long Wharf theatre's "Guys and Dolls") plays Alfred P. Doolittle.
Ryan Murphy on the (non-) Glee news: 'Nobody wants to see a high school senior with a bald spot'
“A year ago, I said I think the best thing you can do on a show like this is not have eight-year seniors,” Murphy told ShowTracker. “Nobody wants to see a high school senior with a bald spot. We want to stay true to what ‘Glee’ is about, which is finding your voice and your place in the world; to stretch that out for eight seasons — though that might be lucrative for us — I don’t think would be fair to the fans.

'Sweet Charity' Back on Track
Christina Applegate has successfully begged theatre bosses to put the problem-plagued revival of Sweet Charity on again - just days after bosses decided to pull the plug on it. The show, which received tepid reviews and was called off after Applegate broke her foot, will now open in New York on May 4, two weeks later than originally planned. Producer Barry Weissler says, "Christina came to me and made the most deeply felt emotional plea. She has given up all her movies for the year, plus her home and husband are on the West Coast. This is what she has wanted since she was a little girl and I just couldn't take it away from her." Weissler says he has received assurances from Applegate's doctors that she will be able to perform in the musical, which is a dance-heavy show. Sweet Charity will now begin preview performances on April 11 at the Manhattan's Al Hirschfeld Theatre, with Applegate's standby, Charlotte D'Amboise, playing the role until April 16. Applegate, who broke her right foot during a performance in Chicago on March 11, will take over the role on April 18.
