Elizabeth Cuthrell is co-founder of Evenstar Films, an independent film and theater production company. She wrote and produced the screenplay for the acclaimed feature film Jesus' Son (starring Billy Crudup, Dennis Hopper, Jack Black, and Holly Hunter). Named one of the top ten films of the year by The New York Times, LA Times and CNN, Jesus' Son won many awards including The Little Golden Lion Award and The Ecumenical Award at The Venice Film Festival. Cuthrell produced the premieres of Denis Johnsons' plays: Shoppers Carried by Escalators into the Flames (The Vineyard Theater), Des Moines (The Flea), and Psychos Never Dream (Fine Arts Work Center, Provincetown). Recent films include include The Same Storm directed by Peter Hedges and starring Sandra Oh, Mary-Louise Parker, and Elaine May, Vara a Blessing directed by Khyentse Norbu, which opened The Busan International Film Festival and premiered at the London BFI and Tribeca Film Festivals (winner of Tribeca Online Best Feature Film Award); The Sisterhood of Night (starring Kal Penn), winner of Tribeca Film Festival's Creative Promise Award for Best Screenplay and Tangerine Entertainment Award for Best Director; Meek's Cutoff (starring Michelle Williams), winner of the Signis Award at The Venice Film Festival and The Independent Spirit Producers Award among others. Additional theater credits include Farinelli and The King on Broadway (starring Mark Rylance, and nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Play, Best Actor, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design and Best Lighting); the world premiere of Slut The Play; Roger Rees' one-man show What You Will at ACT in San Francisco; Jonathan Cott's Walt and Emily: Between the Rooms at the Cherry Lane Theater (Off Broadway). Cuthrell also wrote and produced (along with Mary-Louise Parker) a series of public service announcements entitled Stop the Hate for the Ad Council, which called for an end to racial discrimination. For her work on Stop the Hate, Cuthrell was awarded the Courage Award, given by the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission. Films in development include The Lantern Inn, Devotion, and adaptations of novels Angels and Resuscitation of a Hanged Man. Cuthrell attended University of Hawaii, University of Pennsylvania, and received her MFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Cuthrell is a member of the Producers Guild of America.
