It seems only natural that Severin Films would follow up its two Eurocrypt of Christopher Lee box sets with a collection of some of the more offbeat entries in the filmography of Peter Cushing, Lee’s legendary Hammer Films co-star. Cushing Curiosities collects five films and the remaining episodes of a TV series that highlight the diverse aspects of Cushing’s always authoritative on-screen persona. Featuring crisp new 2K restorations sourced from original elements, Severin’s compelling new set comes complete with loads of bonus materials, including some priceless audio interviews with the man himself and commentaries by historians, as well as Peter Cushing: A Portrait in Six Sketches, a 200-page book by film historian Jonathan Rigby.
Cushing appears as a stiff-necked yet urbane airline pilot in 1960’s Cone of Silence, a modestly compelling exposé based on the actual investigation into a 1952 airplane crash. Reprimanded for a crash that killed his copilot,...

Marcus and Michael Craig were one of the strongest teams on “The Amazing Race 34,” never finishing lower than sixth place (on the first leg) and winning three legs. But the military brothers had been having a tough go with the Roadblocks, which finally caught up to them on the first part of the second Mega Leg. Marcus was flummoxed by the Picasso Roadblock and the duo fell far enough behind that they were never able to catch up over the remaining leg and a half in Spain.
We caught up with Marcus (Michael was unavailable) to find out how far behind they were, why they chose the arch Detour and more.
Gold Derby: You went out in last week’s episode, but your demise really started two weeks ago with that Picasso Roadblock. Is it rougher watching it play out over two episodes instead of one?

The Amazing Race 34 released its cast list, and there are a lot of fun duos that fans will get to watch this fall on CBS.
It was revealed in June that a new group of competitors had begun their race around the world, but we only had rumors to go off of when it came to the names of the cast members.
As expected, the official cast list for Amazing Race 34 includes a Big Brother showmance that seems geared toward doing well on the reality competition show.
Derek Xiao and Claire Rehfuss from Big Brother 23 started a relationship while they were both living in the jury house, and then they took that right into dating in the real world when the season ended.

I’ve always had a great appreciation and fondness for horror anthologies, and I devoured horror comics as a kid; whether it was House of Mystery or Creepy magazine, they never failed to fire my imagination in short, sharp bursts. When the Romero/King collaboration Creepshow (1982) came out, my dream of seeing these kinds of stories translated to film was nothing but revelatory. I soon discovered it was not the first of its ilk, and began a journey through dusty video store shelves looking for its long-lost relatives. One of my first (and favorite) finds was Vault of Horror (1973), a five-fingered punch to my nascent, pubescent, omnibus-loving heart.
Released by Cinerama Releasing stateside in March and produced by Amicus (the fine folks behind its predecessor, Tales from the Crypt), Vault of Horror (aka The Vault of Horror, for the easily confused, I guess) was not as well received by critics as Tales,...

Dystopia! What a place to be. Well, except when people are mulched to feed an over populated society (Soylent Green) or killed at the age of 30 to control it (Logan’s Run); and in the case of Turkey Shoot (1982), hunted for sport by society’s elite. Come to think of it, Dystopia is kind of a bummer.
Released in its native Australia in October, Turkey Shoot wouldn’t see the light of day in the U.S. until September of ’83 under the title Escape 2000. Both titles work; the former playing into the more lurid elements, while the latter highlights the cut rate sci-fi angle. And it’s the swirling combination of the two that gives this sucker its punch. Turkey Shoot is A class exploitation with a down under smile.

Writer Derek Pykett (whose excellent book " MGM British Studios: Hollywood in Borehamwood" was reviewed here earlier this year) has turned his hand to directing; setting up and playing host to a dozen intimate interviews with some of Britain's most respected and beloved thesps, the results are now available on DVD with "From Stage to Screen", a privately produced, limited edition 6-disc box set.
With each performer given their own ‘episode’ and a total running time of 15 hours, there's so much material here that it'll take the average viewer a number of sittings to get through it all. Beyond starting with disc one and working through methodically, where one begins is probably going to be proportionate to the level of esteem in which the viewer holds each particular actor or actress represented within the set; I confess that at the time of writing I still have a fair bit to get through.

Joseph Losey doesn't normally make trendy, lighthearted genre films, and in this SuperSpy epic we find out why -- an impressive production and great music don't compensate for a lack of pace and dynamism, not to mention a narrow sense of humor. Special effects legend Ray Harryhausen, whose dazzling and innovative visual effects work on fantasy adventure films such as Jason And The Argonauts and The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad passed away in 2013 at age 92. In 1933, the then-13-year-old Ray Harryhausen saw King Kong at a Hollywood theater and was inspired – not only by Kong, who was clearly not just a man in a gorilla suit, but also by the dinosaurs. He came out of the theatre “stunned and haunted. They looked absolutely lifelike … I wanted to know how it was done.” It was done by using stop-motion animation: jointed models filmed one frame at a time to simulate movement. Brian Trenchard-Smith’s 1982 actioner is an exploitation riff on 1932’s The Most Dangerous Game featuring a cast made in mondo heaven including Steve Railsback, Olivia Hussey and Michael Craig (Harryhausen’s Mysterious Island). Brian’s claims for the film as a satire can be borne out by its British release title, Blood Camp Thatcher, a back-handed salute to the steely Prime Minister.

Fans of special effects icon Ray Harryhausen should rejoice at the remastering of 1961’s Mysterious Island, a sequel of sorts to Jules Verne’s more celebrated 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which had been memorably adapted by Richard Fleischer in 1954. Director Cy Endfield takes the reigns on this big budget spectacle which tends to suffer from a bout of sequel-itis as regards the bombastic fervor of gigantic, menacing creatures taking precedence over characterization or narrative energy. Still, the production quality does display the same sense of movie magic specific to a certain period of cinema where Harryhausen’s signature Dynamation would influence generations of future filmmakers.

Ray Harryhausen dies at 92: Jason and the Argonauts, One Million Years B.C. special-effects ‘titan’ Long before the computer-generated imagery of Jurassic Park, Avatar, The Avengers, and Iron Man 3, there were special-effects wizard Ray Harryhausen’s painstakingly created stop-motion models, which graced dozens of movies from the late ’40s to the early ’80s. Earlier today, Ray Harryhausen died at age 92 in London, where he had been living since the early ’60s. Among his movie credits are Jason and the Argonauts, One Million Years BC, and the original Clash of the Titans. Born in Los Angeles on June 29, 1920, Harryhausen became interested in cinema’s visual effects after watching Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s 1933 blockbuster King Kong, featuring stop-motion effects by Willis H. O’Brien. "I came out of the theater awestruck," Harryhausen would reminisce to the Chicago Tribune in 1999. "It was such a totally different, unusual film.

Twilight Time has released the 1961 film adaptation of Jules Verne's classic adventure Mysterious Island as a limited edition (3,000 units) Blu-ray. The story was Verne's sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, although the only recurring character is the reclusive genius Captain Nemo (played in this version with great dignity and charisma by Herbert Lom). Nemo doesn't appear until late in the movie and to say too much about how he fits in with the story would spoil the film's many delights. The movie starts with a daring escape by Union POWs from a Confederate prison during the final days of the Civil War. The escapees utilize a hot air balloon, that they successfully launch under gun fire in the midst of a hurricane. The newly-freed men are Capt. Harding (Michael Craig), fellow soldiers Herbert Brown (Michael Callan) and Neb Nugent (Dan Jackson), as well as a war correspondent,...

More than halfway into The Trial Of A Time Lord, and The Doctor's not a happy camper. Not only is he being hectored by Judge Doom on a constant basis, he's also trying to come to terms with the loss of Peri, whose attempts to pre-empt the Mitchell Brothers from EastEnders were cruelly thwarted by an angry Yrcanos. No wonder he starts the ninth instalment with a face longer than Jimmy Hill's chin.
But that Dunkirk spirit slowly manifests itself as The Doctor now begins His defence. It's an odd choice – he evidently thinks that being an outer space Hercule Poirot will somehow absolve himself of all the charges laid against him. So welcome to the Murder On The Orient Express In Space portion of the trial, which is better known as Terror Of The Vervoids.
Now Doctor Who has attempted murder-mystery dramas in the past, with the likes...

There's a prison picture for every mood and inclination, from trashy romps to hard-hitting exposés. Are you craving a little sleazy Wip (that's "women in prison," newbies) action? Feel the need to get your blood boiling with a fact-based story of justice denied? How about a lavish musical set behind bars? There's something on this list for everyone. 10. Caged Heat The quintessential "chicks in the slammer" movie, whose poster really did say it all, promising, "Women's Prison U.S.A. - Rape, Riot & Revenge!" Seventies exploitation starlets Erica Gavin, Roberta Collins, Cheryl Smith, and Desiree Cousteau play mad, bad, and underclad inmates (the only way to better this lineup would be to add Pam Grier), and cult icon Barbara Steele is the wicked warden who eventually gets what's coming to her.9. Escape 2000 This quintessential slice of shameless Oz-ploitation unfolds in a dystopian future where "social deviants" are shipped off...

Britain's Prince William claimed he was graffiti artist Banksy in a speech yesterday (11.05.09). The prince - who is second in line to the throne - made the joke at London's Whitechapel gallery, a space for contemporary art, as he opened a new extension to the building. He started his speech by saying: "Before I start I would like to admit something. I am actually . . . Banksy. "I thought that this would be a good forum to bring it out. Any autographs I will do later." The prince - who studied History of Art at St. Andrews University before switching to Geography - was given a tour of the gallery by artist Michael Craig-Martin, and showed off his...

One of the added benefits of Mark Hartley's superb documentary Not Quite Hollywood (my review) was that it gave me a really good excuse to finally getting around to see movies such as Brian Trenchard-Smith's notorious Turkey Shoot (aka Escape 2000 and Blood Camp Thatcher for some of you international folk.) Routinely named one of this country's worst ever films "back in the day", time has most definitely been kind to it and now stands as one of the most important and vital films we ever made. Suck on that Lynda Stoner!
This film really is a hoot. There is copious amount of blood, bad acting, absurd graphics and even a hilarious horse-riding bow and arrow-slinging lesbian in the form of the fantastic Carmen Duncan. It's nigh on impossible to imagine a film of this kind being made today. Even crazier still when you realise that Turkey Shoot is rated M.
