Yellow Submarine is a cult classic animated film featuring the blue meanies and music from The Beatles. Decades later, Disney wanted to remake the classic film but later scrapped the project for several reasons. While it would have been intriguing to see a modern take on this film, it’s for the best that Disney didn’t move forward with this.

Anne Murray said Cape Breton singer-songwriter Rita MacNeil will be remembered as "just a really good soul, a really good person who just happened to be a supremely talented singer-songwriter."
Murray, speaking this morning to Jian Ghomeshi on CBC Radio's Q from Florida, said she was "shocked and saddened" by the news of MacNeil's death last night but praised her for her songs and talent.
"Everyone was very proud of the fact that we finally had a Nova Scotian and a woman speaking for us and putting into words how we all felt as Nova Scotians, as proud Nova Scotians," Murray said. "And she did it so beautifully, she was a very talented songwriter.
"She had such strong feelings about Cape Breton as I do about Nova Scotia and Cape Breton too. And I could feel that and she wrote about it so eloquently. Whatever she wrote just seemed to...

Okay, before you have a heart attack, note this is a rumor, and frankly it smells like an April Fools Day joke that's still kicking around (and don't think it's not possible -- Clint Eastwood directing a Stompin' Tom Connors biopic made Canadian newspapers yesterday). But the folks at Twitch usually know what's going on, and wouldn't throw this out there unless they thought it might have some veracity to it so, here we are: Hayao Miyazaki's beloved "Kiki's Delivery Service" might be getting a remake. The story is, apparently, "Kiki's Delivery Service" is getting a big budget, live action remake with none other than Takashi Shimizu -- the guy behind at least five different "The Grudge" movies" -- directing. Of course, there are all kinds of red flags, starting with Studio Ghibli even agreeing to such a thing. And then there's the choice of Shimizu, who usually toils in horror/genre fare,...

Although in Canada state funerals have been held only for politicians, one P.E.I. man believes that Canadian icon Stompin' Tom Connors deserves one for contributing to Canadian culture. Kenneth McGrath has created a petition at change.org, which has 804 supporters so far.
"Stompin' Tom is an example from our musical industry of an artist who remained outspokenly and proudly Canadian," said McGrath. "His appeal spanned geography and political sensibilities as he focused on aspects of Canadian life, traditions, and folklore that we can all identify with. A state funeral in honour of one of our great cultural icons would demonstrate this reality in a symbolic and dignified manner."
However, that may not be necessary. Stompin' Tom helped plan his own memorial in the two weeks before his death, so a state funeral is unlikely.
A private memorial will take place on Tuesday, followed by a public event on...

Canadian country-folk singer Stompin' Tom Connors, whose toe-tapping musical spirit and fierce patriotism established him as one of Canada's biggest cultural icons, has died, his promoter said Wednesday night. He was 77.
Connors passed away from natural causes at his home Wednesday evening, Brian Edwards said. The musician, rarely seen without his signature black cowboy hat and stomping cowboy boots, was best known for songs "Sudbury Saturday Night," ''Bud the Spud" and especially "The Hockey Song," a fan favourite played at hockey arenas around North America.
Those three songs are played at every Toronto Maple Leafs home game. At Toronto's Air Canada Centre Wednesday night, many fans took to their feet as "The Hockey Song" was played after Connors' death was announced.
Although wide commercial appeal eluded Connors for much of his four-decade career, his songs are regarded as veritable national anthems thanks to their unabashed embrace of all things Canadiana.
