All of the major news networks carried Donald Trump’s Super Tuesday victory speech live, but MSNBC was the first to cutaway, reflecting a debate at news outlets over how to cover the former president’s fusillade of false claims and unfounded accusations.
Rachel Maddow, leading coverage on the network, was clearly disturbed over the airtime given to Trump, in which he made unfounded claims about the weaponization of the Justice Department and took credit for the rise in the stock market.
As Trump went on, Maddow cut in and told viewers, “Okay, I will say that it is a decision that we revisit constantly in terms of the balance between allowing somebody to knowingly lie on your air about things they lied about before, and you can predict they are going to lie about, and so therefore it is irresponsible to allow them to do that.”
She added, “The...

Updated, 2:21 Pm: As the American military Friday pounds Iranian proxy groups in the Middle East over the killing of three U.S. soldiers last week, President Joe Biden has warned more bombs could be coming.
“This past Sunday, three American soldiers were killed in Jordan by a drone launched by militant groups backed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps,” the president said in a statement just released by the White House. “Earlier today, I attended the dignified return of these brave Americans at Dover Airforce Base, and I have spoken with each of their families. This afternoon, at my direction, U.S. military forces struck targets at facilities in Iraq and Syria that the Irgc and affiliated militia use to attack U.S. forces.”

On Monday, the woman who just won $83 a million judgement against Donald Trump will appear on The Rachel Maddow Show.
MSNBC announced late today that Maddow will sit down with E. Jean Carroll for her first interview since a jury ordered former President Donald Trump to hand over $83 million in damages for defaming Carroll.
Carroll will be joined by her attorneys Roberta Kaplan and Shawn Crowley for the interview to discuss the case and a potential appeal from Trump.
While not a huge dent in self-declared billionaire’s wallet, today’s verdict is still, in the words of CNN’s Jake Tapper this afternoon, “quite a chunk of change.” The judgement will be appealed, as the former president indicated today, but overturning the decision could prove difficult for Team Trump.

Updated with Trump response: After just three hours of deliberations, a New York jury today said Donald Trump has to pay E. Jean Carroll more than $83 million in her defamation trial against the former president.
Of that impressive $83.3 million, $65 million is punitive damages and $11 million is for harm to the former Elle columnist’s reputation.
“I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party,” a self pitying Trump said soon afterwards on social media. “This is not America,” Trump added on his Truth Social platform in words he was heard to mumble yesterday and similar to what the now incarcerated Harvey Weinstein said when he was found guilty of rape in 2020 by another Manhattan jury

The morning before the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary, the atmosphere at the media center of gravity in Manchester was busy but hardly frenetic — muted may be more like it.
At the Doubletree Hotel, there was the typical gathering of reporters in the lobby lounge and the appearance of attention-starved long-shot candidates, but the media footprint is smaller than it was four years ago. A group of a dozen of so twentysomethings gathered along a long table, clattering away on their laptops, but they were from a college class, not some news outlet.
On Tuesday, the cable and broadcast networks again will provide a swarm of coverage of the final hours of the race, then feverishly report on the initial exit polls and finish by micro-analyzing the results.
The question is whether viewers will show up.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

A federal jury Friday awarded two Georgia election workers a total of $148 million in their defamation case against Rudy Giuliani, as they said they were subject to harassment and death threats over false claims that they were involved in rigging the state’s results in the 2020 presidential election.
The election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss, sued Giuliani over the statements. The trial was largely to determine damages. They had previously testified before the January 6th Committee about the threats that they faced.
CNN and MSNBC went to breaking news of the huge verdict, while Fox News initially stuck with Neil Cavuto’s interview with New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, who has endorsed Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential race. Cavuto went to the story once that interview wrapped up.
The verdict was well above the $48 million in damages sought by by Freeman and Moss. The jury awarded Freeman $16.2 million for defamation,...

At Fox Business Network — for one night, at least — it’s all a lot more than the economy.
When the cable outlet televises a Republican primary debate on September 27, many of the strategies it used the last time it did so are going out the window. Gone are moderators Neil Cavuto and Maria Bartiromo, who have experience with such events. In their place: First-timers Stuart Varney and Dana Perino, alongside Univision’s Ilia Calderón. The network will also move away from its efforts to focus largely on business and economic topics, as it has in the past.
Executives at Fox News Media have begun contemplating when to take more momentous news coverage to a broader audience, says Jay Wallace, president and executive editor of Fox News Media, in an interview. “There are very few events out there anymore,” Wallace says. “People do care about politics,” he adds. “It is a...

Donald Trump was found liable for sexual battery and defamation against author E. Jean Carroll — and Republicans can’t decide if that makes him more or less electable.

Fox News agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787.5 million in a last-minute settlement on Tuesday that spared the network the humiliation of a publicized defamation trial. If you get your news coverage from Fox’s prime-time stars, however, you’d have no idea it happened.
The outcome of the lawsuit was not mentioned once between the hours of 7 and 11 p.m. on Tuesday night — a block of time that includes network headliners Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, and Sean Hannity, all figures who were implicated in Dominion’s case against Fox.

CNN’s Jake Tapper stridently referred to Fox News paying $787.5 million Tuesday to settle a looming legal case about Fox News’ false characterizations of Dominion Voting Systems’ equipment in regard to the 2020 election as “one of the ugliest and most embarrassing moments in the history of journalism.”
Tapper had a harder time reading Fox’s statement about the deal that came after a jury was seated and the trial was about to start. Watch the clip below, with his comments starting at the 30-second mark.

Suffering humiliation on humiliation, GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy saw 20 far-right members of his fractious caucus put their third-ballot support behind another top Republican. With business for the new 118th Congress frozen until a Speaker is selected, McCarthy had 202 votes to 212 for House Democrats caucus chair Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and 20 votes to Republican Rep. Ahh, the holidays — a time for gathering with friends, families, and loved ones… and absolutely torturing them with fake news reports of celebrity deaths.
With folks having ostensibly grown tired of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at Thanksgiving, the trend that took off on TikTok this Christmas weekend found kids and young adults — having clearly already plowed through Emily in Paris — sloughing off their boredom with the celebrity death prank. The setup was simple: Record a video while pretending to look at the phone, gasp dramatically, announce a death, and capture the reaction.

SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher, saying that Hollywood’s Covid vaccination mandate “walks the razor’s edge of compromising religious, disability and body sovereignty freedoms,” is urging the guild’s national board to review the most up-to-date science on the effectiveness of vaccines on the spread of the virus’ latest variant before agreeing to extend the industry’s vaccination mandate.
The industry’s Covid protocols, which include a narrowly defined provision that allows employers to require vaccinations as a condition of employment, expire on September 30. The mandates, however, are “subject to reasonable accommodations as required by law for individuals who cannot be vaccinated due to disability or a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance,” though opponents argue that those exceptions are too rarely allowed.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo) followed up on his attack on Disney last week with an op-ed on FoxNews.com in which he argued that corporations were attacking American values by weighing in on divisive social issues. “Big business is no friend to conservatives — that’s been clear for years. And it’s increasingly no friend to America,” he wrote. His solution is to reverse copyright protections for Disney after it came out against Florida’s parental rights law, dubbed the “don’t say gay” law by opponents. In this and other instances, Hawley and others on the right are seizing on long-raging wonkish policy debates and weaponizing them as retribution against companies for going “woke.” One of Hawley’s arguments — that Disney and other companies have been granted special favors — is actually rooted in what went down in 1998: The Mouse House, along with other companies, lobbied heavily for...

After six weeks off the air, Neil Cavuto returned to Fox News on Monday and explained that his absence was due to a serious case of Covid pneumonia that put him in the ICU – and that the vaccine saved his life.
“Had I not been vaccinated at all, I wouldn’t be here,” Cavuto said.
The “Your World with Neil Cavuto” host began, “We have a lot of breaking news right now, but I have a lot of explaining to do.” He asked Fox not to reveal that he was hospitalized. “I wasn’t hiding anything. I just felt that it really wasn’t a story… But this did drag on a long time for me. So you deserve an explanation from me.”
Cavuto had previously contracted Covid in October, but said this case was ” a far more serious strand, what they call Covid pneumonia.” He said, “It landed me...

Chris Wallace is leaving Fox News Channel, he announced on his program Sunday morning, and will join the CNN Plus streaming-video outlet, a move that abruptly sunders the cable-news outlet’s connection with one of its most recognized and independent journalists.
Wallace delivered the news himself, in the last minutes of his “Fox News Sunday,” which he has anchored for nearly two decades on the Fox Corporation-owned outlet. “I want to try something new, to go beyond politics to all the things I’m interested in. I’m ready for a new adventure. And I hope you’ll check it out,” said Wallace. The words will be the last he utters on the program.
CNN confirmed Wallace’s jump less than two hours after he announced his departure, and said he would lead a daily show during which he would interview newsmakers from the worlds of politics, business, sports and culture.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, appearing on MSNBC’s All in With Chris Hayes last night, responded to recent controversial comments from Fox Nation host Lara Logan.
Logan told Fox News’ Jeanine Pirro on Monday that “people across the world” have told her Fauci doesn’t “represent science,” referring to a comment made by the Niad chief. Instead Logan said the “represents Josef Mengele, the Nazi doctor who did experiments on Jews during the Second World War and in the concentration camps.”
Logan, it should be noted, left CBS News in 2013 after apologizing for inaccuracies in her 60 Minutes report about the Benghazi attack.
Fauci on Thursday took issue with her recent characterization of him.
“Look, Chris,” he began, “I think the response is with so many people throughout the country and the world are responding to that absolutely preposterous and disgusting comparison that she makes.”

Neil Cavuto, one of the longest-serving anchors at Fox News Media, has said he tested positive for coronavirus and will take a break from his regular anchoring duties on Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network.
Cavuto has for years been open about health challenges he faces. He has multiple sclerosis, and had open-heart surgery in 2016. He was treated for cancer in the 1980s.
“While I’m somewhat stunned by this news, doctors tell me I’m lucky as well. The disinformation network known as Fox News recently told its viewers that Dr. Anthony Fauci is the “guy who created covid” after, mere days earlier, another host said the White House’s chief medical adviser had been unfairly “vilified” and treated as though he’s “Lex Luthor.”
On Wednesday, Fox’s Tucker Carlson continued with his callous and dangerous campaign to downplay the effectiveness of the coronavirus vaccine, escalating his efforts to discredit the nation’s leading infectious disease expert by falsely labeling Fauci as “the guy who created covid.

Fox News’ Neil Cavuto is not a fan of the vilification of Dr. Anthony Fauci from conservative commentators and lawmakers. Cavuto went so far as to call him “a good man, a good doctor.”

Something interesting happens when Neil Cavuto misses a day or two on air at Fox News or Fox Business Network, where he’s worked since 1996: Viewers take notice, get worried and send out inquiring tweets. TheWrap inevitably reaches out to Fox News only to learn it’s all good and he just scheduled time off to be with family.
There’s reason for the concern, of course. This week marked five years since the open-heart surgery that resulted from that “widow maker” diagnosis, and while Cavuto was pretty busy during that time not only recovering, but covering the Trump administration, Covid-19 and plenty else, he had time to reflect on what he’s learned from his health struggles. Dana Perino and Bill Hemmer’s “America’s Newsroom” tenure got off on the wrong foot — quite literally, in Perino’s case.
The Fox News anchor said she was so nervous this morning that she “put my shoes on the wrong feet.”
That’s not exactly a great start to the new gig. Watch Perino and Hemmer open the newly relaunched program via the video above.
Here is the footwear part of the duo’s opening banter:
Perino: But it was a big day for me too, right? So I came here right after I left the White House. I had the opportunity to work on the Daily Briefing as an anchor, but I’ve never had an opportunity like this and I’m thrilled. I will say it was a little bit like the first day of school feeling. So last night I was nervous. Right. And I had all those feelings.

The sight of President Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, throwing off conspiracy theories and hair dye yesterday in TV’s once-humdrum daytime hours, would not too long ago have proven to be catnip that no TV-news outlet could resist. Yesterday, many of them did.
Few if any of the nation’s TV-news outlets aired live Thursday’s press conference from the legal team spearheading the president’s efforts to overturn the election. And Fox News, which did, followed it up with reporting from Kristin Fisher, a White House correspondent, who noted: “Well, that was certainly a colorful news conference from Rudy Giuliani, but it was light on facts. So much of what he said was simply not true or has already been thrown out in court.” Later that evening, primetime host Tucker Carlson told viewers he had invited Sidney Powell, another Trump attorney to appear, but noted “she never sent us any evidence.

Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto cut off a Trump campaign press conference in which Kayleigh McEnany alleged “illegal voting” and fraud but did not offer proof to back it up.
Trump’s team has been making claims that the election is being stolen from him, but it is part of an effort to sow doubt about the results, even though networks have projected Joe Biden the winner and he is likely to win the electoral and popular vote by substantial margins.
McEnany is the White House Press Secretary, a government paid position, but she has been appearing as a spokesperson for the campaign as well.
“We want every legal vote to be counted, and we want every illegal vote to be…”
Cavuto then cut in. “Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. I just think we have to be very clear. She’s charging the other side is welcoming fraud and welcoming illegal voting,...

Fox News puts Joe Biden’s electoral vote count at 264, six short of victory, raising the possibility that the network will be the first to call the presidency for the Democratic nominee.
The past 24 hours have been a whirlwind of snazzy red and blue electoral maps, deep dives into voting data and weary TV anchors going on little sleep. And there have been standout moments, one of which is the drama surrounding Fox News’ call of Arizona for Biden, a call that the Associated Press also made but not yet any of its rivals. Coverage shifted a bit on Wednesday to potential Donald Trump campaign legal challenges, the latest of which is a lawsuit filed to stop the vote count in Georgia.
There were some key moments of the nonstop coverage, culminating in Trump’s early-morning speech in which he (at least prematurely) declared that he won. Network coverage will...

Pete Buttigieg talked about “the importance of the role of those who lose” during an interview on Fox News Tuesday.
Speaking with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto, the former Democratic presidential hopeful and former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, said that “Accepting the results is one of the most important functions in democracy.” The comments came while discussing potential protests and violence in the wake of the election.
“We need to accept the results that our democratic system has presented us with,” Buttigieg said. “We’ve got to remember that if its taking a while to get the final results, that’s because people are doing their jobs,” counting all of the votes that have been cast.
Buttigieg also discussed the role of social media and large tech companies like Google in elections, saying “These companies really do have to bear some responsibility for what they amplify.” He went on to...
