One of the reasons that Lifetime films are so pleasurable is because they’re inherently familiar. The conflict typically centers around rich (often white) women whose lives are embroiled in adulterous and/or murderous affairs. There’s a plucky, overly supportive best friend; a cop who does nothing; and a therapist or red herring who gets killed to increase the stakes.
What makes Daddy’s Deadly Secret so pleasurable is that writer Leo McGuigan still employs many of the familiar hallmarks, but he packs the film so full that by the time the end credits roll, there’s been upwards of four or five reveals, instead of the more predictable one to two.
Directed by Sean Cisterna, Daddy’s Deadly Secret begins laying the foundation for its mystery early. The opening scene introduces married couple Richard (Steve Byers) and Caroline (Sarah Allen) as they discuss his estranged sister Darla, against whom he took out a restraining order.

I have an opinion: "Slasher" is better than "American Horror Story."
Maybe that's not so controversial to say in 2023, when the popular horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy hasn't had a good season in almost five years, and hasn't had a great one in over 10. "AHS" premiered in 2011, the same year that the sci-fi/technology-run-amok anthology series "Black Mirror" premiered. Curiously, though "Black Mirror" was just as popular, and was covered as furiously as "AHS" was in its prime, its influence on subsequent sci-fi visions seems to have jumped mediums to film. One can imagine pressing play on a new season of "Black Mirror" and watching films like "Ex-Machina," "The Circle," and "Vivarium," were a few minutes shaved off each.
"AHS," however, spawned a veritable renaissance in horror anthology series, from HBO's "Room 104," to Hulu's "Castle Rock," to Syfy's "Channel Zero." Before "AHS," you'd have to...

A mother and her young son move to a new small town. They soon discover the town harbors a dark secret, and it’s a race against time to save the town.
There’s a certain quality to Richard Boddington‘s Wickensburg that feels so incredibly cheap despite having some admittedly fun ideas, even if they, too, can be a bit familiar. It’s a highly strange film for that reason. So much of this film on paper should’ve worked. It should’ve been a big ‘ol campy blast but instead, it’s just… kinda… bad.
It also doesn’t help that the film looks as if it was made on a high-school student’s budget. The lighting in nearly every scene looks poorly done, as does the overall cinematography.

Arthur Forrest, a television legend with a 75-year career that covered long-running hits such as “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and “That’s Incredible!,” died on Oct. 25. He was 95.
Marcy Forrest, Arthur’s wife, confirmed the death to Variety.
Born in 1926 in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx as a first-generation American, Forrest completed his education at NYU and landed a job at DuMont Network’s studio as a janitor. After learning the business, Forrest went from janitor to page, from page to studio assistant, all the way up to the cameraman on “The Honeymooners” and “Captain Video.”
After leaving DuMont and working for New York’s Channel 5, Forrest directed the popular children’s show, “Wonderama,” and stayed at the station until 1973, when he left to direct the late night “Dick Cavett Show.”

"He's a perfect dog for the wilderness... I believe in him." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for a film titled Hero Dog: The Journey Home, yet another Homeward Bound riff about a dog that helps save a human. It's not an exact copy, but close enough, and considering this is a direct-to-dvd title don't expect much originality. Crossing a lake by boat to return to his family, Royce, who is blind, is stranded when the boat's captain suddenly falls ill. To find help, Royce enlists Chinook, a brave malamute doggo, to serve as his seeing-eye dog as they navigate the wilderness. Chinook must protect Royce from treacherous rapids, jagged rocks, and savage mountain lions on their long, heroic journey of survival. Starring Natasha Henstridge and Steve Byers, with John Tench and Zackary Arthur. It does look like an inspiring and lovely story of a dog being the best boi,...

For hockey legend Terry Sawchuk, playing goal in the National Hockey League was more of a calling or destiny than a vocation, or so the new biopic, aptly named Goalie, would have you believe. Indeed, it seems that from his humble beginnings in rural Winnipeg, to winning the Stanley Cup four times – three times with the Detroit Red Wings and once with the Toronto Maple Leafs – Sawchuk was constantly plagued by a troubled past as well as the numerous injuries sustained throughout his twenty-year career, during which he played for four of the Original Six teams, until dying after a drunken fight in 1970.
In fact, the film begins with a scene depicting Sawchuk’s autopsy after the aforementioned fight. The examiner notes all of the damage that has befallen Sawchuk’s body throughout his career. It’s scene that should set the tone for the film to come. Something that...

Every actor knows, you always say yes.
When a director asks, “Can you ride a horse?” Yes. “Bungee jump?” Yes. “Speak Mandarin?” Yes. You figure it out later.
So when Flatliners director Niels Arden Oplev asked Steve Byers if he could drive standard, well, that was an easy one. At some point in his life the Toronto actor had been behind the wheel of a standard vehicle.
Byers (TV’s "Reign", "Slasher" and "Falcon Beach") had been cast as Sam, boyfriend to Marlo (Nina Dobrev), one of the medical students experimenting with near-death experiences in the spooky sequel to 1990’s Flatliners.
Oplev was thrilled. He’d found a vintage Porsche he wanted to use, and it was only available in standard.

This weekend marks Hercules’ return to the big screen. A staple in the hero canon, the half man, and half god has slayed lions, bedded mortal women, and even hung out with the Three Stooges. Over the past seven decades, the hero has transformed from an Italian Stallion of the 1950s to the Blockbuster Beefcake we see today thanks to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kellan Lutz taking on the title role. With the former’s film (Hercules directed by Brett Ratner) opening this weekend, we thought it was a good time to look at the evolution of Hercules on the big screen.
’50s: The Italian Stallion
A star of the “sword and scandal” genre, Hercules became a regular fixture in Italian cinema during the 1950s. These historical epics were seen as the country’s answer to successful big-budget Hollywood films, such as Spartacus and The Ten Commandments.
Subsequently, the...

The former foreign reporter and New Labour insider on his brush with MI6 and being played by Steve Coogan
Martin Sixsmith is already well known as a BBC foreign correspondent (Moscow, Washington, Warsaw), but the film Philomena, may make him very famous. The film is based on his 2009 book and stars Steve Coogan as "Martin Sixsmith" and Judi Dench as Philomena Lee, the woman whose son (taken as a baby by nuns in 1950s Ireland) he helped search for. Sixsmith (the real one) has also been a communications director for New Labour – until he was forcibly "resigned" in 2002 – as well as an adviser on the TV series The Thick of It.
What do you think of how you are portrayed in the film?
It's tricky for me to give an objective judgment, but I think the character traits are exaggerated for dramatic effort. So in the beginning of the movie,...

Cassie weighs in: Is Abby gone for good? (Stop reading if you haven't watched the second season finale of 'The L.A. Complex!') When we first met Abby (Cassie Steele) on The L.A. Complex, she was a starry-eyed girl ditching her Canadian boyfriend for the lights and promises of Los Angeles. But the second season finale found Abby coming full circle, choosing to leave L.A. behind for a new life in Germany with husband Gray (Steve Byers). Cassie spoke to HollywoodLife.com about Abby's departure and the prospects of a third season for the fan-favorite drama. That finale was nuts. What was your initial reaction to it? "Even when [the cast] read the scripts, we were floored. But I do like that everything's really flexible. Every character still has a lot of options, which is great, because so many things can happen." And how did you feel about Abby choosing Gray over L.

Alphas Review, Season 2, Episode 3, “Alpha Dogs”
Written by Nick Copus
Directed by Eric Tuchman
Airs Mondays at 10pm (Et) on SyFy
One of the consistent surprises about Alphas is the way it wades into conventional plots but sidesteps a predictable outcome. This week, SyFy’s promos had teased a Fight Club-like underground fighting ring that looked very similar to other shows. The first-season Sanctuary episode “Warriors” also showed individuals with extraordinary abilities battling in front of roaring crowds. The surprise with “Alpha Dogs” is that it doesn’t spend that much time in the arena. Bill gets his chance to battle some tough foes, but it plays out much differently than the anticipated formula. The fights are just one part of an episode that delves into Stanton Parrish’s background, brings a new living situation for Gary, and adds a possible love interest for Rachel. It’s an engaging...

Dr. Rosen’s band of Alphas is back together — but will the reunion be a lasting, happy one? Or did the time apart create rifts that will be difficult to repair? As the Syfy drama continues Season 2 this Monday at 10/9c, Azita Ghanizada gave TVLine a look down the windy road ahead, which will find Rachel on the scent of a very special man, put her powers “on steroids” and push Rosen’s obsession with mega-Alpha Stanton Parrish to a “scary” place. Also: The brunette beauty throws her tiara into the ring to play a certain Once Upon a Time princess.

This is great news. If you watched Syfy‘s Alphas during its inaugural season last summer, you likely enjoyed the treat that was Summer Glau in a terrific part, as an Alpha whose ability was to construct incredibly complex pieces of technology. It was a geeky part, and she played it with absolute style and grace.
Happily, Syfy has announced that she’ll be reprising that part for three episodes in the second season of the show, which premieres on Monday, July 23 at 10/9c. (Don’t worry, Lost Girl fans, your show is not going away, it’s just moving down the block to Fridays.)
Joining the lovely and talented Ms. Glau are a hobbit, a former NCIS director, and a lieutenant with the colonial forces, amongst others. Check out this great lineup:

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Total Recall Compare the Total Recall 1990 trailer below to the Total Recall 2012 trailer released today. You'll notice a few things: Arnold Schwarzenegger is a much worse actor than Colin Farrell. Sharon Stone was in movies before Basic Instinct. Special effects play a much smaller role in the 1990 trailer, which places a much stronger emphasis on philosophical musings, "humorous" lines, and old-fashioned action sequences. The old trailer also tells you the whole plot of the film. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the original Total Recall featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Rachel Ticotin, Michael Ironside, Ronny Cox, and Marshall Bell. The 2012 remake was directed by Len Wiseman. In addition to Colin Farrell, also featured are Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy, Bokeem Woodbine, Ethan Hawke, Steve Byers, and John Cho.

Colin Farrell, Total Recall trailer "If I'm not me, then who the hell am I?" That sounds like a line from Alan Parker's Angel Heart, in which Mickey Rourke plays a guy possessed by Robert De Niro. Or perhaps something out of Carl Reiner's All of Me, in which Steve Martin gets (sort of) possessed by Lily Tomlin. But no. Colin Farrell is the identity-challenged guy in this year's Total Recall remake, whose trailer (please scroll down) was released today. Are his memories his own or have they been implanted? If they're not his own, is he still himself or has he become someone else? Now, don't expect to much philosophical questioning in Len Wiseman's remake of Paul Verhoeven's classic-ish sci-fi/thriller. At least if the trailer is any indication of what the movie will be like: a big-screen videogame featuring big weapons, hot women, nonstop action,...

Colin Farrell: Total Recall poster The upcoming Total Recall remake stars Colin Farrell in the old Arnold Schwarzenegger role of a man who, to simplify things, can't quite tell where dreaming ends and reality begins. True, this makes Farrell/Schwarzenegger's character seem like just about everyone on planet Earth — especially Eduardo Noriega in Open Your Eyes and Tom Cruise in Vanilla Sky — but in Total Recall, the hero's predicament is a bit more complicated. He not only doesn't know what's real and what isn't, but he also has a whole bunch of people out to kill him. In the poster, you can see how fragmented things are for Farrell's hero, Douglas Quaid. His head is literally falling into pieces. To be released by Sony / Columbia on August 3, Total Recall will have its full trailer launched next Sunday. Based on Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,...

Lifetime has decided that neither of its freshman dramas are worthy of a second season. The cable channel cancelled The Protector in September and they've now canned Against the Wall as well.
Against the Wall stars Rachael Carpani as Abby Kowalski, a single cop who joins the Chicago department's internal affairs division. The series' co-stars include Andrew Walker, Brandon Quinn, Chris Johnson, Daniel Kash, James Thomas, Kathy Baker, Marisa Ramirez, Mayko Nguyen, Steve Byers, and Treat Williams.
Debuting on July 31st, the show attracted a mediocre 1.8 million viewers with a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, about on par with The Protector. Unfortunately, the numbers didn't improve throughout the season. The 12th and 13th episodes (now the show's last) aired on October 23rd. They each drew 1.4 million viewers and 0.4 demo ratings.

She warns Clark is in danger of being recognized as the Blur. But Clark feels he's okay, he didn't get into any sort of trouble. He then says he spellchecked his story after Lois shows him the paper (Clark and his spellchecker comments, he used those for Lois last time.) Story of Wakefield welder isn't just about racism or political correctness, it's also about small firms' willingness to employ
Did you notice in the course of a lively week that an employment tribunal in Leeds has decided that the use of the name "Borat" by a Wakefield-based welder to tease a Polish colleague is racist, and may require the award of compensation for hurt feelings. More to the point, do you care?
You won't find the report in today's Guardian, I'm afraid, we're often a bit jittery about this kind of story. Nor will you be surprised to learn that the Daily Mail has no such inhibitions, though it has refrained from editorial or columnar comment so far. So here is a chance to beat them to it.

The shows you get out of Lifetime can be pretty hit or miss. That's generally a good thing as far as I'm concerned. You either love Drop Dead Diva, or you hate it, and I for one appreciate the "not for everyone" approach to show design. It's a recipe that gets trickier when you're venturing out into the massively overpopulated world of crime shows though, and Lifetime's new efforts, The Protector and Against the Wall, are faced with a tough road with genre norms butting heads against network image.
Shows focusing on cops and/or crime aren't well-suited to flights of fancy, or niche shtick, like several of Lifetime's other working models, and when people think Lifetime, a network that's going to suck in crime show fans is not exactly what leaps to mind.
I'm still not convinced by Lifetime's effort at balancing things with The Protector.

The project starring Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Drew Roy, Sarah Carter and Maxim Knight is produced by Steven Spielberg and centers on an alien invasion of Earth and the resistance formed by the survivor. Also producing are Graham Yost (Justified) and Robert Rodat (writer of Saving Private Ryan). Noah Sorota is scoring the show. Check out our announcement from earlier this year here and visit Tracksounds for an audio interview with the composer. The two-hour season finale is airing tonight on TNT.
