Apple and Canal+ have signed a landmark deal that will bring Apple TV+ to all Canal+ subscribers in France, along with some other European territories.
The deal is different from the aggregation agreements that Canal+ has in place with other streamers such as Disney+ and Netflix, whose offers are being accessible as part of the French pay TV operator’s bundle.
Under the pact, Apple TV+ will be available at no extra cost to Canal+ subs from April 20. Canal+ customers can seamlessly and easily access the films and series of Apple TV+ directly on their existing set-top box — with no separate app or subscription necessary. This is a multi-territory agreement for France, French speaking-Switzerland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Speaking to Variety, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of services, and Maxime Saada, Canal+ chairman and CEO of Canal+ Group, said they’ve known each other for years and celebrated the idea of tying the knot.

It’s easy to forgive a lot in a romance if the chemistry is strong enough, and for the first couple episodes of Apple TV+’s Liaison, the sparks between Eva Green’s Alison and Vincent Cassel’s Gabriel seem reason enough to forge ahead. It hardly matters if we don’t really understand the international conspiracy that’s reunited these estranged exes, or that we don’t yet understand what transpired between them all those years ago. The smolder between them draws us in, even when all they’re doing is exchanging a wordless gaze through a rain-splattered window.
But without enough fuel to ignite a blaze, smolder is about as far as it gets. By the time Liaison stumbles to a close, whatever flickers of promise it showed early on have long since been stamped out by indifferent storytelling and a bloated run time.

Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus are the next global streaming services slated to roll into Europe, joining Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in some of the world’s most lucrative markets. But along with the opportunities come local programming and investment obligations that the new players — including upcoming services Peacock and HBO Max — may struggle to meet.
Chief among these is a requirement that their catalogs offer at least 30% European content by the end of 2020. It’s still unclear how that 30% will be assessed — according to number of hours or number of titles — but officials are expected to clarify the issue by the end of this year. “It’s going to be a challenge for the European Commission to come up with a fair system for the quota,” says Ed Border of London-based consultancy Ampere Analysis. Counting either by titles or hours could be open to abuse.

International TV drama’s golden age is continuing. As buyers and sellers from around the world congregate in Cannes, Variety speaks to the stars, writers, and distributors of 10 of the scripted series that will be the talk of the Croisette.
The Bisexual (pictured top left)
(All3Media Intl.)
Desiree Akhavan wrote the first draft of “The Bisexual” right after premiering her indie film “Appropriate Behaviour” at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and then spent a year developing it. Having moved to London she took the script out in the U.K. and partnered with Jane Featherstone’s hot indie, Sister Pictures. Just as her movie “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” was greenlit, Channel 4 ordered “The Bisexual” to series.

Lille, France — France’s Leonis and the U.K.’s Artists Studio, owned by Endemol Shine, are re-teaming with Virginie Brac, one of France’s most celebrated screenwriters, on the development of a new miniseries “Faceless,” described by Endemol Shine as “a smart, tense, disruptive thriller which dynamites Anglo-French entente cordiale.”
Leonis’ Jean-Benoît Gillig, Artists Studio’s Gub Neal and Justin Thomson at DoveTale, which will also develop “Faceless,” made the announcement at France’s Series Mania. The co-development deal follows on Leonis, Artists Studio and Brac’s first collaboration, “Insoupconnable,” a series which world premiered last weekend at Series Mania.
Described by Endemol Shine as a “provocative new show,” and scripted by Brac and Oliver Butcher, “Faceless” “blows open the cracks at the heart of the European project,” taking audiences on a “wild ride through the corridors of power on both sides of the Channel,” Endemol Shine continued. The...

Apparently the first Monday after Sundance is going to be a relatively slow one. That is, unless you are a TV journalist.
First, Variety is reporting that Sam Mendes will be producing a new TV series entitled Grand Hotel. An eight-episode series penned by Richard McBrien and Virginie Brac, the story will follow “the guests and staff of a ritzy international hotel in Paris who are suddenly taken hostage. Held captive in the lap of luxury, they try to find out why they’re being held prisoner, and plan to escape.” Mendes is not set to direct any episodes that this point, as he’ll be quite busy on the upcoming Bond 23, but with no start date set in stone yet, that may ultimately change.

Sam Mendes ("Revolutionary Road," "American Beauty"), BBC Worldwide and Canal Plus will team to produce the eight-episode TV drama series "Grand Hotel" says Variety.
The story revolves around the guests and staff of a ritzy international hotel in Paris who are suddenly taken hostage. Held captive in the lap of luxury, they try to find out why they're being held prisoner, and plan to escape.
Richard McBrien ("Wallander, "Spooks") and Virginie Brac ("Spiral") are penning the scripts. Mendes will produce but not direct.
Canal Plus is also behind three big international series, each twelve episodes long, currently in the works. One is the $35 million "Borgia" which Tom Fontana ("Oz," "The Philanthropist") is show running while Oliver Hirschbiegel ("Downfall") directs the first four episodes. Despite the title, it is not to be confused with the upcoming Showtime series "The Borgias".
Also in production is the ancient Egypt epic "Pharaoh" from "Rome" creator John Milius,...

Call it "Prison Break" set inside a swanky hotel, but we have to admit we're curious about this one thanks to the talent aboard. Variety reports that director Sam Mendes is set to produce "Grand Hotel" (not to worry, classic film buffs, it's not a remake of the John Barrymore/Greta Garbo pic) along with Canal Plus and BBC Worldwide. The eight-episode series, with installments written by Richard McBrien ("Wallander," "Spooks") and Virginie Brac ("Spiral"), will center on "the guests and staff of a ritzy international hotel in Paris who are suddenly taken hostage.
