In The Last Waltz (1978), improvised a guitar solo to give Eric Clapton time to put his guitar strap back on (the strap had come undone while Clapton began his song "Further On Up the Road").

Upon Robertson's death, his body was cremated, and his ashes given to his surviving relatives.

Was survived by his second wife, Janet Zuccarini, as well as his ex-wife, Dominique, her partner Nicholas, and his children Alexandra, Sebastian, Delphine, and Delphine's partner Kenny. He is also survived by his grandchildren Angelica, Donovan, Dominic, Gabriel and Seraphina. Robertson recently completed his fourteenth film music project with frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese, 'Killers of the Flower Moon.' In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Six Nations of the Grand River to support a new Woodland Cultural Center.

His mother, Dolly Chrysler, died in 2009, while Robertson's natural father, Alexander Klegerman, died in a car accident before Robertson was born. Robertson subsequently adopted his stepfather's surname, Robertson, and it was not until Robertson was a teenager that he learned of his natural father's background, and soon developed a close relationship with his paternal uncles.
