Robert Downey Jr. earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Academy Awards for playing Kirk Lazarus/"Sergeant Lincoln Osiris" in "Tropic Thunder." (Though it took 15 years and "Oppenheimer" for him to cinch the Oscar.)
Rdj's performance as the self-involved Lazarus — an actor who takes his craft so seriously he'll get surgical blackface — is indeed a highlight. It's the most transgressive part of "Tropic Thunder," but no matter how offensive it can look out of context, it's executed with purpose in the film, not hate (except towards method actors).
Only one other part in "Tropic Thunder" rivals Rdj as Lazarus; Tom Cruise as short-tempered studio executive Les Grossman. Even more so than "Collateral" (which makes Cruise's steely screen presence sinister), Cruise's Grossman performance attests to his surprising range. In "Tropic Thunder," Cruise's movie star good looks are concealed beneath balding, burly makeup and he acts nothing like he usually does.

If you’re able to get to London by January 25th, or to Dublin in February, you can still get yourself a seat to see Dr. Strangelove, adapted for the stage by The Thick of It creator Armando Iannucci and starring Iannucci’s frequent star, Steve Coogan. If you’re not? All you need is a Hulu login to see Coogan’s next most recent performance.
In this week’s episode of What We Do in the Shadows, Coogan débuts as Roderick Cravensworth, father to Matt Berry’s Laszlo — or, to be more precise, his ghost, Roderick having died more than a century ago. It’s reductive to say Roderick is the kind of father who would drive his son to rebel by embracing vampirism, but it might also be true: He’s pompous, he weasels his way into relationships far too quickly and he’s lightly emotionally abusive to...

Marc Maron, Gaby Hoffmann and David Krumholtz have joined the cast of Jeremy Allen White’s Bruce Springsteen biopic “Deliver Me From Nowhere.”
Maron will play Chuck Plotkin, the music producer who mastered Springsteen’s “Nebraska” album, turning his unprocessed cassette demos into a high-quality record. Hoffmann will portray Springsteen’s mother, Adele Springsteen, a singer in her own right who died at age 98 earlier this year. Krumholtz will play Al Teller, a record label executive who oversaw the release of “Nebraska.”
From Disney’s 20th Century Studios, “Deliver Me From Nowhere” follows Springsteen during the creation of his 1982 album “Nebraska,” a stripped-down record that marked a creative shift from the anthemic “Born to Run” and “The River.” The movie is currently filming in New Jersey and New York. Springsteen, who is involved in the making of the film, visited the set earlier this week and was photographed hugging White.

The seventh edition of Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival wrapped over the weekend with the $50,000 top prize going to French director Jonathan Millet’s Syrian drama Ghost Trail, and its star Adam Bessa winning Best Actor.
See the full list of El Gouna winners below.
Launched in 2017 by Egyptian tycoon Naguib Sawiris in the Red Sea resort of El Gouna created by his brother Samih Sawiris, the festival’s early years were characterized by glitzy red carpets and parties and Hollywood guests such as Owen Wilson, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal and Patrick Dempsey.
The festival has toned down the bling in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, sparked by the latter’s October 7 attack on southern Israel which killed more than 1,100 people, and resulted in the abduction of 253 people.
With the death toll in Gaza now topping 43,000 alongside dire warnings from aid agencies that the population of...

Judy Greer, Sean Astin, Bryan Cranston and John Goodman have all signed on to star in the upcoming dark comedy feature Chili Finger, with first-timers Edd Benda and Stephen Helstad to co-direct. Helstad wrote the script and Goodman is an executive producer. Additional castmembers Sarah Herrman and Paul Stanko are currently attached, with production slated to begin next spring. The film is produced by Beyond the Porch and Gold Tree Studios.
Chili Finger tells the story of a recently empty-nested mother (Greer) who discovers a human finger in her bowl of fast-food chili. When she blackmails the restaurant for a cash payout, the situation spirals out of control and her life descends into chaos.
So far, Astin, Cranston and Goodman’s characters are being kept under wraps.
“We couldn’t ask for a better cast to bring our quirky dark comedy to the big screen,” said co-directors Benda and Helstad.

Albert Finney as Kilgore Trout with Bruce Willis as Dwayne Hoover in Alan Rudolph’s adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions
In the second instalment of my conversation with Alan Rudolph on his adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast Of Champions, shot by frequent collaborator Elliot Davis (Equinox; Mortal Thoughts; Love At Large), we start out with what his friend, the novelist Tom Robbins, who has a cameo (as Pesky Weber), told him after the film was finished.
Alan Rudolph with Anne-Katrin Titze on the influence of Jean Cocteau’s Orphée on final scene: “Probably not directly, but you know, every little drop of water feeds the plant.”
The director/screenwriter has assembled the perfect cast of accomplices, including Albert Finney, Nick Nolte, Glenne Headly, Barbara Hershey, Omar Epps, Lukas Haas, Owen Wilson, Buck Henry, plus a hyperactive Bruce Willis starring as Dwayne Hoover, the ringleader of what goes on in Midland City.

Jack Nicholson, 87, hasn't officially retired from acting, but he also doesn't do it anymore. In 2013, Nicholson spoke with Vanity Fair about rumors of his retirement, and he merely wanted to say that he had retired from incessant flirting, not acting. He did admit, however, that he wasn't passionately driven to put himself out in the world anymore. Nicholson's good friend Lou Adler (the famed record producer) told Marc Maron in 2023 (via The Wrap) that Nicholson had been contacted several times about appearing in multiple film projects since 2010, but that Nicholson turned them all down. It seems that the actor would rather sit under a tree and read a book. Which is, of course, his right. With 80 film credits and multiple Academy Awards, not to mention worldwide fame, Nicholson has earned it. So, although he's never announced his retirement, Nicholson is more or less retired.
And if Nicholson isn't going to...

Alan Rudolph with Anne-Katrin Titze on Robert Altman considering Johnny Carson and Peter Falk to be cast as Dwayne Hoover (played by Bruce Willis) in Breakfast Of Champions: “He would cast his movies before they were written.”
In the first instalment with Alan Rudolph, we discuss Robert Altman’s early connection to Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast Of Champions, the roles played by Bruce Willis, Nick Nolte, Albert Finney, and Owen Wilson, plus working with Willis and Demi Moore on Mortal Thoughts. Now, with the help of Ron Mann, director of What We Like, producer David Blocker, cinematographer Elliot Davis and Shout Factory, there is a 4K Digital Restoration of Breakfast of Champions available to screen in cinemas, on streaming platforms and Blu-ray DVD for the 25th anniversary of this very prescient film. Alan Rudolph was an assistant director on Altman’s Nashville, California Split, The Long Goodbye, and appeared as himself in The Player.

There are whisperings that Sister Wives is being made into a movie.
The long-running TLC series has been entertaining reality TV fans since 2010.
Kody Brown, a former polygamist, and his then-four wives, Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn, allowed cameras into their lives as they lived plural marriage and raised their super-sized family.
Since its inception, Sister Wives has taken on a completely different storyline.
After Robyn joined the family, Kody’s dream of living under one big roof with all four of his wives and their 18 children was squashed.
Kody’s marriages to his first, second, and third wives deteriorated over the seasons, and eventually, Meri, Christine, and Janelle left him and polygamy behind.

If there’s one thing Tom Holland is known for in the MCU, it’s Spider-Man. But if there’s another, it’s his utter inability not to spoil its movies. Despite some serious gaffes in the PR department, Tom Holland did hold one major secret in regarding the MCU: Robert Downey Jr.’s role as Doctor Doom, one of the biggest surprise casting announcements in recent memory.
Appearing on the Rick Roll podcast (via Variety), Tom Holland said he had a tremendously hard time keeping that particular MCU spoiler to himself. “I’ve been speaking to [Robert Downey Jr.] a lot, especially about him making his [Marvel] return, which is super exciting…That was a tough secret to sit on because I have a reputation for ruining things and I strategically have done no press.” Downey was announced as Doctor Doom this last summer, an incredibly bold move considering we all knew Rdj...

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Melissa Villaseñor is opening up Owen Wilson’s time as guest host on the NBC late-night sketch show.

It would be weird for fans to see Todd Phillips back to direct the Wolfpack members on another adventure gone wrong. The Hangover was a film that worked on a particular formula, that has been used over and over again in its sequels and other similar comedy films. While Bradley Cooper may want to go down his comedy roots again with a fourth film, it just doesn’t make any sense at this point.

The new Todd Phillips film is about a pair of Jokers and this week’s film quiz focuses on other movie duos.
They say it takes two to tango, but no one ever says it takes two to Tango And Cash. Why would they? Stupid thing to say. Anyway, October’s first big release Joker: Folie à Deux sees Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker joined by Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn for an all-singing, all-dancing sequel – just don’t call it a musical! And as Warner Bros also announced the animated Robin movie Dynamic Duo earlier this week, we’re quizzing for two.
As always, there are three rounds and 30 questions in total. Once you’ve completed today’s film quiz, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. This is just for fun, but please let us know how...

Earlier this year, the news broke that Columbia Pictures is planning to squeeze new life out of the Anaconda franchise, with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent director Tom Gormican set to helm a reimagining of the 1997 giant snake horror movie.
Paul Rudd and Jack Black have now been confirmed to play the lead roles, and according to Deadline, Daniela Melchior has also joined the cast.
Melchior was most recently seen in the Road House remake, and also made a memorable appearance as Cleo Cazo, aka Ratcatcher 2, in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.
Gormican will also co-write the script with collaborator Kevin Etten.
The project is said to have been in development at the studio since early 2023, and has gone through numerous rewrites as the "filmmaker and Columbia tried to find the right balance of tones."

The history of Marvel’s television series is a complex one. Way before the MCU, several Marvel-based television series were made, including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Netflix series, but they are not considered to be part of the MCU, at least not in the way you’d think.
And while Marvel has, in the meantime, gotten hold of the rights to these characters and is going to integrate them into the MCU, the past is the past.
MCU’s television history starts with WandaVision, which premiered in 2021. Since then, a total of 12 series have been released as of the time of writing, with more coming out in the upcoming months and years. In light of that, have you ever wondered how these shows have fared with the critics?

Fixing his smile was just one thing Ben Affleck had to transform for Michael Bay’s film Armageddon. It’s not often discussed, but the beauty standards for male actors in Hollywood are just as skewed. The transformation demanded of Affleck for this movie went beyond just his appearance.

His iconic boy-next-door look, which had endeared him to audiences, was deemed too ordinary for a film about an apocalyptic threat. He had to adopt a look that was equally extraordinary, one that could match this out-of-this-world film.

Paul Rudd and Jack Black are set to headline a reboot of the Anaconda movie franchise, as they seek to become snake fodder.
It looks like we may be getting another Anaconda film. You could probably have gleamed that from the headline though, to be fair.
While we could make a clever joke about the seemingly endless cycle of reboots, remakes and legacy sequels being somewhat akin to a snake eating its own tail, there’ll certainly be plenty of folks out there that that wish that there had been more Anaconda films, despite the series’ slide into made-for-television ignominy.

The first Anaconda released in 1997 and featured several stars with careers on the rise including Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Ice Cube. And let’s not forget that Jon Voight added his talents to the project as well. It was barmy fun, following ‘a film crew that is taken hostage by an insane hunter,...

Here's some rather surprising but nonetheless exciting news. According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Paul Rudd and Jack Black might be in talks to star in a remake of the 1997 horror creature feature Anaconda.
Everything is very much still in development and the "rumors" stage, but the outlet says the remake would focus on an older group of friends remaking one of their favorite films from their younger days in the hopes of recapturing their youth amid facing mid-life crises. Of course, once they arrive at their rainforest destination, the friends "find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes, and violent criminals."
It sounds like there are two characters fleshed out, one a director-turned-wedding-videographer feeling stuck in their job and the other a Hollywood actor aspiring for greater work than the cop procedural series he was previously cast in. Black was reportedly...

Jack Black and Paul Rudd are in early talks to star in Columbia Pictures’ re-imagining of “Anaconda” from writer-director Tom Gormican.
Gormican, who helmed the Nicolas Cage-starring meta movie “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” and penned “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” co-wrote and will direct the new “Anaconda” movie, which is said to put a more comedic spin on the serpentine story. Kevin Etten is the co-writer.
Details about the project are hazy, but the film is not a remake of 1997’s “Anaconda,” which saw Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Ice Cube as a National Geographic film crew taken hostage by an unhinged hunter (Jon Voight) on his quest to capture the world’s largest and deadliest snake. The thriller was a surprise hit, earning $136 million at the global box office and spawning four sequels.

Paul Rudd and Jack Black are in early talks to star in a new “Anaconda” movie at Sony, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” writers Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten wrote the screenplay, with Gormican attached to direct. “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Tomb Raider” screenwriter Evan Daugherty wrote the previous draft of the script.
Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing via their Fully Formed banner.
The film isn’t expected to be a sequel or a straight remake, but instead a reimagining of the original ’90s film, which grossed roughly $137 million at the box office worldwide and was disparaged by critics and audiences alike at the time.
Released in 1997, “Anaconda” starred Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube and Jon Voight.
