The 1992 horror comedy slasher Dr. Giggles (watch it Here) is getting a Blu-ray release courtesy of Scream Factory on March 21st – and copies can be pre-ordered at This Link!

Dr. Giggles was directed by Manny Coto, who rewrote the original screenplay by Graeme Whifler so extensively that Whifler was able to take the original script and get another movie out of it.. Dr. Giggles ended up with the following synopsis: It has been 35 years since the small town of Moorehigh discovered why Dr. Rendell kept losing his patients: he was ripping their hearts out in a twisted attempt to save his ailing wife. The townspeople stoned Rendell to death, but they never found the young son with the hideous giggle who helped his deranged father perform the operations. Now, over three decades later, Dr. Rendell’s son returns to gain revenge on Moorehigh’s residents, and he’s not shy about making house calls.

Hey, everyone! We’re back with a brand new installment of our horror and sci-fi home media recap, and if you’re looking to check out some fun stuff this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, maybe this week’s releases can help keep you entertained. This week’s horror and sci-fi home media releases are a fun bunch, as we have a lot of great new movies to look forward to, as well as a ton of killer classic titles headed home to various formats. If you missed it in theaters, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is being released alone and then alongside the first two Ghostbusters films as a three-movie collection, and for those of you who love mind-blowing animation, you’re going to definitely want to check out The Spine of Night. One of my favorite films from 2021 was Danishka Esterhazy’s Slumber Party Massacre, so if you missed seeing it then, now you can catch up with it courtesy of Scream Factory.

In January 1998 I attended a book signing in New York City emceed by author Russell Banks and film director Atom Egoyan. They were on hand to autograph copies of Mr. Banks’s 1991 novel, The Sweet Hereafter, which had been made into a 1997 film of the same name by Mr. Egoyan. Despite varying greatly, the novel and the film both concern the aftereffects of life in a small town in the Adirondacks when fourteen children die following an accident involving their school bus when it careens off a slippery, snow-covered road and sinks into the frozen waters of a nearby body of water. Mr. Egoyan claimed that he was inspired to make the film because, he felt, something terrible will happen to everyone at some point in his or her life, and they will need to find a way to move on.

Eureka Entertainment to release Pulse, the slick, suspenseful techno-horror and VHS favourite from director Paul Golding, on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK as part of the Eureka Classics range from 22 February 2021. I grew up with Flight of the Navigator. It’s always been one of my favourite movies. A family sci-fi adventure film that kinda fell under the radar to some degree and has since become a cult classic. It’s charming, it’s funny, it’s nostalgic as hell and it’s incredibly entertaining, so I was completely and utterly on board when Second Sight announced their upcoming Blu-ray release. A limited edition release with special features, extra goodies and a new transfer? Fans are very happy. I had a chance to take a look at the blu-ray release and here are my thoughts on it, as well as my opinions, all these years later, on the film itself.

For a self-described "reactionary" filmmaker, Monte Hellman is remarkably forward-thinking. Road to Nowhere (reviewed here), his first feature since 1989, is a film shot digitally that's partly about cinema in the digital age; from its very first shot—where a character pops a DVD-r with the film's title on it into a laptop—on, Road to Nowhere is a film about the slipperiness of digitally created, manipulated and viewed images. Written by longtime Hellman collaborator Steve Gaydos, it stars Shannyn Sossammon as Laurel, an inexperienced actress who is cast in a true crime drama also called Road to Nowhere (directed by one “Mitchell Haven” and written by one “Stephen Gates”); in this film-within-a-film, Laurel plays femme-fatale-ish Velma Duran, though the whole thing is ambiguous enough (in terms of structure, characterization, aesthetics, etc.) that at least one character begins to suspect that Laurel and Duran are in fact the same person.

Hellman is erudite and easygoing.

Monterey will release the 2010 independent neo-noir Road to Nowhere directed by the great Monte Hellman on Blu-ray and DVD on August 23 for the list prices of $34.95 and $26.95, respectively.

Not so unlike the two-decade hiatus that took him away from feature filmmaking, legendary director Monte Hellman's new film Road to Nowhere is a fascinating, frustrating, languorous journey through the movies' heart of darkness. The noir-within-a-noir places director Mitchell Haven (Tygh Runyan) back behind the camera after an extended absence, where he plans to make a true-crime film based on the illicit relationship between -- and supposed deaths of -- femme fatale Velma Duran (Shannyn Sossamon) and corrupt politico Rafe Taschen (Cliff De Young). But when Mitchell casts Velma doppelganger Laurel Graham (also Sossamon), the line between the filmmaker's life and art soon blurs beyond recognition.

Flight of the Navigator‘s plot synopsis: “a 12-year-old boy named David who is abducted by an alien space craft [in 1978, only to reappear once more in 1986. This is one of those films that dazzled the imagination – if you were near or at the ago of the protagonist – when the film was released: the special effects were that good and still hold up today. The viewer wanted to be in David (Joey Cramer)’s shoes, at least for part of the film e.g. when he is aboard the “Trimaxian Drone Ship from the planet Phaelon”.

There’s little better at restoring one’s faith in cinema then when a great director returns from the wilderness. Terrence Malick was Mia for 20 years between Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, but Monte Hellman’s time away from feature filmmaking has been even more prolonged. It was as far back as 1988 when Hellman made Iguana, his last “proper” film, but now the director of such cult classics as Two Lane Blacktop and Cockfighter has happily returned to filmmaking.

‘Tapping into the cultural zeitgeist,’ at SXSW 2011

Austin, Texas – The SXSW 2011 Feature Film Lineup was unveiled Wednesday afternoon. The festival lineup will consist of 130 features, in nine full days of programming, promising to deliver a film-going experience unlike previous years.

With a reputation for taking chances on relatively unknown filmmakers, the SXSW panel of judges carefully picked 130 films from 1,792 feature-length film submissions, (1,323 U.S. and 469 international). The program consists of 60 World Premieres, 12 North American Premieres and 16 U.S. Premieres.

The main competition categories return with eight Narrative Features, and eight Documentary Features, both competing for their respective Grand Jury Prize. New for films in competition this year, are awards for screenplay, editing, cinematography, music, and acting.

(The Midnighters and SXFantastic feature sections, along with the short film program, will be announced next week.)

The fest rolls on with Jodie Foster‘s The Beaver, Greg Mottola‘s Paul, Sundance Grand Prize doc winner How to Die in Oregon, Errol Morris‘ Tabloid, Victoria Mahoney‘s Yelling to the Sky, Azazel Jacob‘s Terri. There will also be a special screening of Catherine Hardwicke‘s Red Riding Hood.

Titles you should be aware of – all of which we’ve previously profiled on Shadow And Act – include, Victoria Mahoney’s feature film debut, Yelling To The Sky (which will actually make its world debut at the Berlin Film Festival later this month); plus Blacktino, the first feature film from writer/director Aaron Burns, a self-described “blacktino nerd from Austin, Texas,” who got his start at Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios doing visual effects; Benda Bilili, a documentary about a band of homeless, disabled Congolese; and last, but not least, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, a documentary about the black man that happens to be the man behind the puppet (which also played at Sundance).

Disney is developing a remake of the 1986 sci-fi adventure movie Flight of the Navigator. Brad Copeland has signed on to write the screenplay and John Hyde, who executive produced the first one, will be back to produce. The original told the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by an alien spacecraft in 1978 and reappears eight years later, still the same age and with no memory of what happened. Nasa scientists discover a connection between the boy and a downed spacecraft and try to exploit the boy, who ultimately escapes with the ship and attempts to reunite with his family. The movie grossed only $17 million when it was released but was later rediscovered on VHS, becoming a cult hit. It was directed by Randal Kleiser (Grease) and starred Joey Cramer, Paul Reubens, Veronica Cartwright, Cliff De Young and Sarah Jessica Parker. Copeland previously wrote Wild Hogs for Disney and is writing Nightcrawlers at Warners.
