Physical media collectors, take note. The Criterion Collection has announced six new Blu-ray releases coming in February 2025, including titles from some of today’s most beloved auteurs and one famously elusive late-career work from a French New Wave legend.
The slate is headlined by Jean-Luc Godard’s “King Lear,” an essential work from the “Breathless” director’s experimental period that has long been unavailable to own or stream. The film uses William Shakespeare’s tragedy as a jumping off point for a postmodern riff on art in a world decimated by the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown. While it shares little DNA with the actual play that shares its name, “King Lear” contains some of the most striking imagery of Godard’s filmography, including the director himself donning a Rastafarian wig made entirely of electrical cables. The nonlinear film is a pastiche of influences, references, and ideas that stands out to many...

Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve knew the storytelling success of Dune: Part Two hinged on the developing chemistry between stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, as well as the antagonistic energy of Austin Butler, and worked carefully with the actors to ensure that those elements showed up onscreen.
Speaking during the Dune: Part Two panel along with screenwriter Jon Spaihts at Deadline Contenders Film event on Saturday, Villeneuve noted how the offscreen bond between Chalamet and Zendaya grew through the making of the first film and their promotional duties in a way that eventually provided a serendipitous payoff during the second installment.
“They met each other in Part One, briefly, and spontaneously they became friends,” Villeneuve explained of the pairing of the actors as they played the ultimately star-crossed lovers Paul Atreides and Chani throughout the lengthy arc of two films. “And as we did the promotional tour, their relationship became, let’s say,...

Chloe Fineman has accused Elon Musk of having been a terror when he hosted SNL.
Saturday Night Live‘s return for the sketch comedy show’s 50 year anniversary comes at a pivotal, deeply depressing time.
SNL is a cultural touchstone. It has seen many highs and lows over the years.
One of the recent lows saw notorious billionaire Elon Musk hosting. According to Chloe Fineman, his hostility backstage brought her to tears.

At least he didn’t “offer” to buy her a horse.
Before Chloe Fineman said anything about Elon Musk, her beloved castmate Bowen Yang dropped hints on the topic.
In August, Bowen took a break from kissing every famously beautiful SNL host to appear as a guest on Watch What Happens Live.

The first trailer for Waltzing with Brando, a new film tracking Marlon Brando’s early ’70s plan to create a vacation resort in Tahiti, has been revealed.
Waltzing with Brando stars Billy Zane as Brando and Jon Heder as Bernard Judge, the architect and environmental planner tasked with building the resort. It takes place mainly from 1969 to 1974, during which Brando starred in legendary films like The Godfather and The Last Tango in Paris.
Brando filmed Mutiny on the Bounty in Tahiti in the early 1960s and fell in love with the region, leading him to purchase a small island there. He was deeply committed to sustainability and aimed to infuse this ethos into his new island retreat. The trailer shows Brando bringing the task to Judge, who commends Brando’s ambitions but worries about its practicality. Against turbulent weather, funding issues, and even a lack of running water, Judge and...

The first trailer has been revealed showing Billy Zane as Marlon Brando at the peak of his powers in upcoming biopic “Waltzing With Brando.”
The feature, which also stars Jon Heder, has been picked up by Vmi Worldwide for foreign sales.
Written and directed by Bill Fishman, the film is based on a memoir by Bernard Judge which takes place between 1969 and 1974 while Brando was preparing to film “The Godfather” and “Last Tango in Paris.” Alongside Zane and Heder, additional castmembers include the Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss, as well as Camille Razat (“Emily in Paris”), Alaina Huffman, Tia Carrera (“Waynes World”) and Mick Jagger’s son James Jagger.
“Waltzing With Brando” follows Brando (Zane) — then the most famous actor in the world — as he filmed “Mutiny on the Bounty” and bought a tiny and uninhabitable island in Tahiti. His intent was to escape his hectic Hollywood lifestyle and show the world the path to sustainability.

Despite Lorne Michaels’ previous promise that no real-life political candidates would show up on SNL this election season, Vice President Kamala Harris popped by Studio 8H on Saturday night, appearing in a cold open opposite Maya Rudolph’s Kamala, playing her literal mirror image.
While this one-off cameo seems unlikely to have much of an impact on Election Day, Trump supporters have been raging about the sketch online, suggesting that Trump himself is now owed airtime due to the FCC’s equal time fairness rules (although this was seemingly resolved by a NASCAR ad). They’re also complaining that Harris “plagiarized” an earlier sketch starring Trump.
It’s true that back in 2015, Trump and Jimmy Fallon performed a similar mirror bit, in which Fallon-as-Trump teed up the presidential candidate for jokes that also served to promote his campaign talking points (never forget Fallon’s role in this national nightmare...

Kamala Harris shocked everyone when she appeared on the November 2 episode of Saturday Night Live. Lorne Michaels had previously stated that no politicians would be appearing on the show during season 50, but he seemingly changed his mind.
Harris appeared alongside the comedian who has been impersonating her, Maya Rudolph, during the episode's cold open. The skit consisted of Rudolph looking in the mirror and giving herself a pep talk, and the real Harris was on the other side, serving as her reflection.
Kamala Harris' mirror skit was done by Trump in 2015
In a vacuum, this skit is nothing special. It's surprising that Harris participated, but it wasn't an especially funny or notable cold open. In the context of the show's history, though, the decision to recreate this skit rubbed some fans the wrong way.

Is Eternal Atake 2 a return to the essence of what we love about Lil Uzi Vert and “back to square one,” as the non-binary artist recently told Rs’ Jeff Ihaza? Or is it a retrenchment from the wilder impulses of their admirably experimental yet unevenly executed Pink Tape? The Philadelphia alien wants to replicate the universal acclaim that greeted Eternal Atake back in 2020, a moment when Gen Z and old heads alike finally recognized them as a generational talent. But old bugbears keep popping up, adding frisson to the “PerkySex...

John Mulaney has taken a unique path to becoming Saturday Night Live royalty. He was a writer on the show, but never played a significant role in terms of screen presence. He's blown up as a comic in the years since ending his SNL tenure, however, and become a fan favorite host.
Mulaney is hosting again on November 2, making him the first SNL alum to host during the landmark 50th season. He knows what he's doing, and he has the cachet with the audience to take risks with his sketch ideas. This wasn't always the case, though.

John Lennon was truly a mystery in the eyes of his fans. In some ways, maybe it might have been better if the mystery had been kept up. As more people discover about The Beatles singer’s personal life, the more they wish they hadn’t. Nevertheless, his relationship with Yoko Ono was of special interest to the public and still is.

The Beatles may have triggered the tradition of boy bands in the music industry, but it is John Lennon whose name invokes just a bit more awe and reverence than McCartney, Ringo, or Harrison. Decades after the singer’s tragic assassination, despite a life left incomplete, Lennon continues to impact lives across the planet, weaving threads of idealism among the masses.
With their presence setting off the crowds at every concert and show, the latitude of the band’s influence in the global socio-cultural landscape was unprecedented. Beatlemania became a phenomenon that was felt in the marrows but never capable of being described in words.

With everything that's going on in Ariana Grande's career, from her chart-topping singing career to starring in the massive movie musical "Wicked," it can be easy to forget that she got her start as an adorkable theater kid who found success on Nickelodeon. But having Grande host "Saturday Night Live" for a second time, after her debut pulling double duty as host and musical guest back in 2016, was the perfect reminder that she's a versatile performer who not only has unbelievable singing pipes, but she also has quite an impressive array of impressions -- including some that don't require her to sing at all.
While Ariana Grande's second time hosting "SNL" wasn't quite as good as Nate Bargatze's second time hosting last weekend, this was still an extremely solid episode that featured even more musical sketches than her first stint on the show. Plus, while the musical sketches...

Nearly from the beginning, Saturday Night Live musical guests have used the show as a vehicle to promote a new album, introduce a new style or even launch a career. The last thing the artists want is goofy cast members joining in, turning a sizzling musical spot into a ridiculous sketch.

The haunting intro on the Rolling Stones’ “Monkey Man,” the galloping keyboard solo on the Beatles’ “Revolution,” the piano that anchors the Who’s “The Song Is Over,” and countless other indelible classic-rock moments were all the work of one man: session keyboardist Nicky Hopkins. Paul McCartney and John Lennon were on decidedly bad terms after The Beatles broke up. They fought viciously over the phone, wrote barbed lyrics about one another, and railed against each other in interviews. Their disagreements often had to do with the band’s business dealings. While Lennon supported their manager, Allen Klein, McCartney was very suspicious of him. He believed that much of what Lennon said about Klein was foolish.
Paul McCartney said John Lennon said some foolish things
When Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr campaigned for Klein to take over as The Beatles’ manager, McCartney pushed against them. After the band broke up, McCartney sued them to wrest control over their catalog from Klein. By 1973, Lennon, Harrison, and Starr fired Klein, who had been working as the manager of their solo careers. McCartney said he felt vindicated.
“Now the only good thing I feel is that I wasn’t wrong.

It seems like Diddy is getting called out left and right for different mistakes he’s made over the years. It’s possible people were scared to speak up about their bad experiences with him in the past, but now that he’s been arrested, folks are feeling more comfortable speaking their minds. Janelle Pierzina, a former contestant from Big Brother, just shared some details about a past experience she had with Diddy. Her experience wasn’t a good one.
Janelle Pierzina Didn’t Enjoy Serving Diddy
In a Twitter post via Distractify, Janelle posted the nitty-gritty details about what it was like dealing with Diddy while she worked in the service industry. She tweeted, “In 2005 I did VIP bottle service. Diddy and his entourage were in my section. The nightclub gave him like 20k in bottles free of charge. I gave his table great service all night. Diddy stiffed me on the tip.

In the year 2021, Ellen DeGeneres’ life was turned upside down when her show (and Ellen herself) came under scrutiny for allegedly promoting a very toxic work culture behind the scenes. A lot of former staff started to talk about how badly they were treated, and some other staff echoed that sentiment. There were rumors of sexual misconduct even, though not against Ellen herself. Before all this, Ellen DeGeneres used to be hailed as the nicest celebrity around. So much so that people would hire her for babysitting, as she mentions in her latest Netflix comedy special. Ellen was the flagbearer of wholesomeness. She used to end her episodes by urging people to be kind. Naturally, those kinds of allegations were basically enough to ruin her career. The show wrapped things up in the subsequent year, and Ellen pretty much got canceled. But she’s back with a Netflix special now,...

There’s never been a stand-up special more aptly named than Ellen DeGeneres’ For Your Approval, which dropped today on Netflix. It’s one of the weirder stand-up shows in recent memory, half observational punchlines, half closing argument in a trial featuring DeGeneres as her own defense attorney. Neither half works on its own. Taken as a whole, it’s an exhausting mess.
Let’s get the comedy stuff out of the way first. DeGeneres came up in the business as an affable observational comic in the Jim Gaffigan/Bob Newhart mold, borrowing Newhart’s one-sided phone conversation technique for her popular bit about talking to God. She peppers For Your Approval with similar jokes about mundane topics like parallel parking, windshield wipers and the weird habits of chickens — the punchlines are professional but uninspired.

Hamrick claims she was not initially interested in Jagger. “Ballet dancers meet some of the biggest stars and act, like, ‘Who are you?’ Because ballet dancers are the gods to us,” she told the UK’s Sunday Times. “That’s who you study and look up to. You’re so in your world.”
The choreographer shared why she doesn’t mind the age gap between herself and Jagger.

As Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney and Chloe Troast know all too well, most departures from Saturday Night Live happen with little fanfare or recognition — a few paragraphs in The Hollywood Reporter during the show’s off-season and you’re gone for good. The show’s early cast members didn’t get much of a send-off either, but in recent decades, Lorne Michaels has occasionally tipped his cap to exiting cast members who served the show well.
Here are five of the show’s most heartfelt farewells…
1 Will Ferrell
Ferrell’s goodbye was the first in which cast members appeared as themselves to say au revoir. Over sentimental music, viewers heard from cast members like:
Ana Gasteyer: “I worked with Will for six years, and it was more fun than anything I’ve ever done.”Jimmy Fallon, telling on himself: “It was hard for me to work with Will because...

At 80 years old, Peter Townshend is talking more openly about his past, which included “a couple of homosexual affairs.”
“I tried them out, and I very much enjoyed them,” The Who co-founder told The Daily Mail. “I’ve made a couple of really close friends that I’m still friendly with today. But it wasn’t what worked for me, sexually speaking – and didn’t fit into my life, somehow.”
Townshend hasn’t always been so open about his sexuality. He denied rumors of being gay after his song “Rough Boys” sparked questions from fans 30 years ago. He claimed that, when talking about his “gay life,” he was talking about “the friends I’ve had who are gay.”

Exclusive: Irish rock knight Bob Geldof and the producers of Just For One Day, the musical about the Live Aid rock concerts in London and Philadelphia on July 13, 1985, will transfer the show, which world-premiered at London’s Old Vic Theatre last January, into the West End in 2025 to mark the seminal event’s 40th anniversary.
The production, directed by Luke Sheppard and with a book by John O’Farrell, weaves together the Live Aid story from the perspective of those who worked behind the scenes to put it on, namely Geldof and Scottish musician Midge Ure. Both co-founded The Band Aid Charitable Trust.
The trust has funneled its funds into helping to alleviate starvation and poverty in Africa. It will receive 10% of every Just For One Day ticket sold, plus, after recoupment, some 50% of the show’s profits.

This can be written with great confidence: You know a Paul Anka song. Right now, you’re either thinking, “Well, yes, of course I do,” or you’re thinking, “I do not.” If you are in the latter group, you are wrong. There are, of course, his big hits like “Put Your Head on My Shoulder.” But then there are the songs he’s written for others, most notably “My Way,” which he wrote for Frank Sinatra and has been covered by Elvis, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Sid Vicious, and countless others. It’s in the conversation for one of the most famous songs ever written.
That’s kind of the remarkable think about Paul Anka — who is at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, returning to his Canadian roots for the premiere of John Maggio’s documentary “Paul Anka: His Way” — that he’s written so many famous songs for others.

There’s a moment in “Elton John: Never Too Late,” a robustly satisfying and emotional documentary about the life and career of Elton John, that captures him, in a most revealing way, in his ’70s heyday.
It’s a clip from a television interview, in which Elton is explaining how he writes a song. The clip must be from 1971, and Elton, still looking like a puppy child, with rectangle-framed glasses and plenty of shaggy hair, sits at an upright piano and brings out a sheaf of lyrics — pages all written in longhand by his collaborator, Bernie Taupin. Elton wants to show us his method, so he talks about a song he just wrote, called “Tiny Dancer,” and finds the lyrics to it. He explains how he scanned through them and realized, when he saw the word “ballerina,” that it would have to be a slow-tempo song. He demonstrates how he kind of improvised the chords.

If you start Trey Parker and Matt Stone up, they’ll never stop – they’ll just take two-year breaks here and there.
When Parker and Stone first launched the TV show adaptation of their crudely animated, gleefully crass, Christmas-themed short films about kids in Colorado accidentally unleashing a killer snowman on the town and Jesus squaring off with Santa Claus in 1997, the twenty-somethings immediately established themselves as the biggest rock stars of cartoon counter-culture. Parents banned their children from watching South Park while conservative Christian groups lobbied to have the show pulled from the airwaves. Teens disseminated bootleg VHS tapes around their schools in secret. Fans tattooed their favorite characters all over their bodies. For all intents and purposes, South Park was animated TV comedy rock and roll, thumbing its nose at authority and flaunting its creative freedom.

There’s a song called “Country’s Cool Again”on Lainey Wilson’s new album, “Whirlwind.”It’s not one of the autobiographical numbers on the record, but maybe it should be, because Wilson herself is a big reason why country music is seeing renewed cachet in the culture. In a male-skewing genre that hasn’t really generated a new female superstar since Maren Morris broke out in 2016, Wilson has become the reigning current standard-bearer for women in country. And she didn’t do it by going after pop crossover, but by being so true to her roots that she’s attracted fans from across the fence who had no idea that what they really needed out of music right now was a hardcore Louisiana accent.
Wilson’s hot streak began when her major-label debut single, “Things a Man Oughta Know,” hit No. 1 three years ago, even as she was...

Whether playing the lover opposite Marianne Faithfull or the assassin in Le Samouraï, the prolific French actor, who has died aged 88, was a symbol of the lost beauty of the 60s
• A life in pictures
There is a famous photograph of Alain Delon in 1967, sitting on a couch next to Marianne Faithfull, with a subdued Mick Jagger on the other side of her, apparently taken around the time Faithfull was about to star in The Girl on a Motorcycle, in which Faithfull modelled a sleek leather body suit that Delon’s character would take great delight in unzipping. Faithfull is leaning over intimately as Delon murmurs to her, laughing, lit up in his presence, her body language entirely enfolded into his. Jagger can only look down uneasily at his cigarette. Later Faithfull would say that she didn’t fancy Delon one bit, but confirmed that Jagger was very jealous.

In 1977, Dolly Parton’s career was on enough of an upward trajectory that she was performing for audiences of celebrities. At a show in New York, a number of big names turned up to watch Parton sing. While Parton is confident in her abilities, she admitted that getting in front of this crowd was a daunting task.

Blues and rock musician John Mayall, the “godfather of British blues” whose bands included some of the most well-known and virtuosic rock musicians of the past 50 years, died on Monday at the age of 90.
“It is with heavy hearts that we bear the news that John Mayall passed away peacefully in his California home yesterday, July 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family,” his family confirmed in a statement Tuesday. “Health issues that forced John to end his epic touring career have finally led to peace for one of this world’s greatest road warriors.

The Rolling Stones spent the last three months hitting football stadiums in major cities all across North America on their Hackney Diamonds tour. But it all wrapped up Sunday night at the New Thunder Ridge Nature Arena at Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri. In the 1970s, Dolly Parton took the stage at a New York concert in front of an array of celebrities. Major musicians, actors, and artists eagerly waited to hear Parton perform. While Parton was her typical self onstage, cracking jokes and singing songs about her upbringing, at least one critic believed the act was overly calculated. Parton’s guitarist shared why it may have come across this way.
Dolly Parton’s guitarist said she was very nervous at a concert in New York
In 1977, Parton played three shows at New York’s Bottom Line to audiences that included people like Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, and John Belushi. The crowd adored her, but one critic for the New Times believed Parton was overly concerned with “capturing attention than on rewarding it.” Parton’s guitarist, Don Roth, thought this resulted from nerves.
“I can tell you one thing,” Roth said in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash.
