If you ask any action fan hailing from any country, that has some kind of internet connection or cable television, about the most influential director in the genre, they’ll definitely talk endlessly about John Woo. Before checking out his Hong Kong productions, I was watching his Hollywood films on loop. I was mesmerized by Woo’s use of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s mullet in Hard Target. I was forced to watch Broken Arrow multiple times by one of my friends, and even though it didn’t hit me during the first few viewings, eventually, the utter insanity on display blew me away. Obviously, I wasn’t ready for the bonkers premise of Face/Off and the even more bonkers performances from Nic Cage and John Travolta. I didn’t like Mission: Impossible 2 initially because it was so different from Brian De Palma’s work, but now I think it’s a masterpiece.

The Crow: Salvation is the third instalment in the franchise that began with the iconic 1994 film The Crow, recently released on 4K Uhd, starring Brandon Lee. Directed by Bharat Nalluri, The Crow: Salvation attempts to recapture the dark, gothic allure that made the original a cult classic but falls short in several areas when compared to its predecessors.
The film follows Alex Corvis (Eric Mabius), who is wrongly executed for the murder of his girlfriend, Lauren (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe). After being resurrected by the mystical crow, Alex seeks to uncover the conspiracy behind Lauren’s death and his own wrongful conviction. Unlike the vengeful rock musician Eric Draven from the original film, Alex is a more subdued character.

Superhero movies were nearing their maximalist peak in 2017 — "Avengers: Infinity War" was a year away, while the DC Extended Universe was self-destructively racing toward "Justice League" without a roadmap or significant audience buy-in — when James Mangold quietly, confidently subverted the genre with "Logan." There had been attempts at revisionist superhero films before, but they were mostly based on/influenced by explicitly revisionist graphic novels (e.g. Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" and Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy). Josh Trank's "Chronicle" was probably the boldest of the bunch, but that was a top-to-bottom original.
Mangold's "Logan" was different. It used Hugh Jackman, the man who'd been playing Wolverine for 17 years, to tell an X-Men tale that branched out from the film franchise's narrative to depict a Logan in physical decline. Nothing lasts forever — not even, apparently, Wolverine's mutant healing process. He is in unremitting pain, and each altercation plunges him deeper into agony.

Based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr, the first version of The Crow was released in 1994 and told the tragic story of goth rocker Eric Draven and the love of his life, Shelly Webster. Later this year, we’ll be getting a remake of The Crow, with the story of Eric and Shelly being told all over again. It seems kind of strange to do a remake and revisit characters in a franchise that lends itself to the anthology format, where each film can be focused on a different vengeful, undead person… but it does make business sense, because The Crow remake is getting more attention than the three Crow sequels ever got. But those Crow sequels do have their fans, and Scream Factory is about to celebrate one of them – The Crow: Salvation from 2000 – with a limited edition Blu-ray release on March 26th.

If John Woo had permitted the characters in “Silent Night” to speak, chances are that audiences would laugh them off the screen. Instead, the director gets right down to business, opening with a wordless chase sequence in which a sad dad (Joel Kinnaman) in a corny Christmas sweater sprints after a pair of speeding cars. Inside the vehicles, bad men blast machine guns, while our nameless hero is armed with … just his wits and the jingle bell around his neck.
By the time this guy — identified as Brian Godlock in the end credits — catches up to the gang members who murdered his son, “Silent Night” has already demonstrated that Woo has no intention of letting logic get in his way. And why should we expect any different from the director of “Face/Off,” whose title-says-it-all gimmick had two rivals swapping identities via plastic surgery? The movie dedicates a lot of time...

How does one create a film festival during an actors strike? Middleburg Film Festival executive director Susan Koch explains she’s approached programming the Virginia fest in the same manner as she has always done. “We looked for the strongest films and a wide range of films that represent diverse voices and ones we feel will expand our view of the world,” she tells Variety.
Now in its 11th year, the festival continues to be a carefully curated weekend of films and conversations, including many of the year’s buzziest titles. “Rustin,” a Netflix biopic of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin that was directed by George C. Wolfe, will open the four-day fest. Wolfe will receive the festival’s Impact Award for his work in bringing the impactful civil and LGBTQ rights story to the screen. Searchlight’s “Poor Things” and A24’s “Priscilla” are also among films screening from Oct.

Joel Kinnaman is getting his revenge on murderous thugs by killing them softly in the trailer for Silent Night, John Woo’s first American directorial effort in 20 years.
The movie follows Kinnaman’s grieving father character, who takes action against a gang that killed his son and robbed him of his voice on Christmas Eve, but beyond the relatively straightforward tale of righteous vengeance lies a wildly ambitious undertaking behind-the-scenes: Silent Night features virtually no dialogue.
Although Hollywood may be nearly a century past the peak of its silent film era, the first trailer for Silent Night proves that Woo’s mastery of elaborate action set pieces will offer some true innovation to the genre. Complete with nonstop hand-to-hand combat, car chases, and high-caliber gun fights, the movie will surely still bring the noise. Watch the trailer below.

"The Conjuring 2" opens with Ed and Lorraine Warren investigating the infamous Amityville house at 112 Ocean Avenue to determine whether or not a demonic presence caused Ronald DeFeo Jr. to commit familial annihilation and the subsequent supernatural events that plagued the Lutz family after they moved into the home. The couple holds a seance and Lorraine is thrust into a terrifying vision where she encounters a demonic nun.
The Nun appears multiple times throughout the film, until Lorraine rightfully addresses it as Valak, a shape-shifting demon, and condemns it back from which it came. James Wan didn't intend for Valak to be such a major player in The Conjuring Universe — honestly, "The Conjuring" was never supposed to spawn a cinematic universe but the fans demanded it — and didn't originally intend for the demon to take the shape of a nun. But The Nun, portrayed by Bonnie Aarons, was so scary...

There have been so many variations and film versions of Bram Stoker’s classic Dracula, from 1926’s Nosferatu to Tod Browning’s 1931 Dracula to Francis Coppola’s well-regarded take with Gary Oldman to even comedic satires like Love at First Bite with George Hamilton taking on the role. Now in Universal’s latest effort to rescue its horror classics and make them new again, we have the perfectly cast Nicolas Cage as the Prince of Darkness. Even he has done an offshoot before, in 1988’s Vampire’s Kiss. However this time around the film is not centered on Dracula himself, but rather his beleaguered servant, henchman, whatever you choose to call him, Renfield, and it is another Nicholas, as in Hoult, who has the title role this time in Renfield. Cage’s part, though meaty, is actually supporting as the emphasis turns to the long-suffering assistant who was tasked with bringing...

The story of Dracula reaches back to the 1897 gothic horror novel, which inspired countless iterations across every medium imaginable. Chris McKay’s Renfield takes its own stab at the infamous tale of a monster and his familiar, but with a contemporary spin on the toxic relationship between Dracula and R.M. Renfield. Of course, there’s plenty of gore this time around.

“Scream VI” (now in theaters) is arguably the most Easter egg-filled installment in the horror franchise, which is really saying something.
There are the costumes the Halloween revelers are wearing on the subway, the “shrine” to Ghostface’s previous murders, even the inclusion of Hayden Panettiere as legacy character Kirby Reed. They all serve as meaningful cultural references. But there’s one cameo that eagle-eyed viewers (and listeners) might have missed. Thankfully directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are here to clue you in. (Minor spoilers follow.)

What’s your favorite scary movie?
Nah, that’s too trite.
What horror movie would you show to someone who has never seen one before?
You may have the same answer to both questions, but the latter requires a bit more thought. John Carpenter’s Halloween is my favorite movie, but I recognize it most likely would not hold up under the scrutiny of a viewer who’s used to flashy modern cinema.
Instead, I would show them Wes Craven’s Scream.
I know what you’re thinking: wouldn’t Scream‘s meta references be lost on a viewer unfamiliar with the trappings of the genre? But one of the many brilliant aspects of Kevin Williamson’s script is how it brazenly draws attention to the tropes before turning them on their head. The meta approach also gives the film a timeless quality, despite it otherwise being very much of-the-moment circa 1996. Sure,...

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, you’ll no doubt find a number of genre outlets running lists of horror movies to watch for the most romantic day of the year. Warm Bodies is likely to appear on most if not all of them, but there’s another reason to revisit the 2013 film this year: Lionsgate is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray and Digital) edition in Steelbook packaging, available exclusively at Best Buy.
I realize Twilight is practically a pejorative on a horror site, but we probably wouldn’t have Warm Bodies if sparkling vampires hadn’t paved the way. Both films are coming-of-age romances with monsters based on young adult books. Warm Bodies has the added benefit of the proliferation of zombies in pop culture heralded by The Walking Dead, plus a sense of humor akin to Shaun of the Dead or Zombieland.

Undeniably, some entries in the Scream movie franchise are superior to others, but they all successfully pushed boundaries and experimented with genre conventions. The series sparked heated debates among fans for its bold decision not to feature the iconic Ghostface mask – a staple of prior films – or make any direct ties to previous movies.
The incredible film series created by Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first two and the fourth films, has earned an astounding 740 million in box-office receipts worldwide!

We’ve talked before about how the introduction of Scream into the horror world changed everything. It was an Elvis, Beatles, Nirvana moment for the genre. Why, though? It’s the Millennium! Motives are incidental! No really, it’s because Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson gave us something that could be fun and frightening at the same time, and in equal measure.
And Ghostface is truly the gift that keeps on giving, with Scream 6 arriving in 2023.
Let’s take a look at the more sinister side of Scream and the moments that were dark and twisted enough to keep you scared while you were laughing and enjoying the movie references.

The announcement of winners for the ASCAP Screen Music Awards, being held virtually again for 2022 and announced Monday morning, included revealing the top vote-getters for several Composers’ Choice Awards, including the scores for “Encanto” and “The White Lotus.”
Germaine Franco prevailed for film score of the year for “Encanto.” Cristobal Tapia de Veer won two of these peer-voted awards, for television score of the year and television theme as well, for “The White Lotus. The video game score of the year honor went to Wataru Hokoyama for “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.” Triumphing in the documentary score of the year category was Amanda Jones for “Dreamland: The Burning of Black Wall Street.”
Those five Composers’ Choice Awards come on top of ASCAP’s traditional Screen Music Awards, which collect date to honor the most-consumed music of the year in the fields of TV, film and video games, with dozens of winners cited.

The thriller is a mold that’s well worn, but not necessarily always tried and true. Some miss the mark, not being able to deliver an unpredictable and suspenseful experience. Damien Power’s No Exit may not seem unique when reading its synopsis, but it’s one of the best thrillers in a long time that focuses keenly on making sure its audience will never see what’s coming.
Based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Adams, the film begins at a rehab center where Darby (Havana Rose Liu) is staying. I feel like I should admit a bias/concern I had about the new Scream soundtrack right off the bat: it’s not by Marco Beltrami, who composed the memorable music for Screams 1-4. Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Brian Tyler’s score for Scream, which is set for release on all digital platforms tomorrow via Varèse Sarabande—ahead of the fifth film in the beloved horror franchise’s release in theaters on January 14.
In addition to releasing music from the new film, the record label will be celebrating Marco Beltrami’s iconic scores from the first four films with a 4-lp edition of his Scream: Original Motion Picture Soundtracks, featuring two hours of unreleased material.
Way back in 1996, Wes Craven’s Scream ushered in a new era of slasher flicks—pairing self-aware satire with the chills, gore, and plot twists expected of the genre. Now, 26 years later, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group take us back to the fictional town of Woodsboro, CA, where a new group of teenagers are targeted by the masked serial killer known as “Ghostface,...

Honors were given out in more than 30 categories at Wednesday’s 12th annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards, with singer-songwriters like Billie Eilish, H.E.R., Adam Levine and Rufus Wainwright being celebrated in the live webcast as well as composers including Hans Zimmer, Rachel Portman, Alberto Iglesias and Nicholas Britell.
The HMMAs reward songwriters, composers and even performers in fields that include not just film and TV work but everything from video games to commercials to theme park music.
Film nominations are given in multiple genres, which allows for a series of short lists that members of the Academy’s music branch may end up studying as they vote for the Oscars’ much, much shorter lists.

Best original song Oscar contenders Beyoncé and Van Morrison are among those who received nominations in the visual media categories at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards (Hmma). Composers Hans Zimmer and Nicholas Britell were included among the familiar names picking up nods in the score categories.
The awards will be presented Nov. 17. The HMMAs honor composers, songwriters, and music supervisors for their work in music for film, television, and videogames.

Nobody did better with horror franchises than Wes Craven, who reinvigorated the genre in this relentlessly bloody thriller. Its self-referential gimmick should have been exploited decades before: what if the teenagers in movies were like real teenagers that watch horror movies. . . and that must rely on their movie knowledge when confronted with R-rated carnage? 25 years later the show holds up well, at least until the final revelations. Kevin Williamson’s screenplay and Mark Irwin’s camerawork make Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and Rose McGowan the most attractive and intelligent horror scream queens since Peggy Cummins tried to kick some sense into Dana Andrews.

As one of the review writers who loved 2018’s Venom, I was happy as symbiote in a perfect host to see it soar at the box office. The wait for a sequel has been longer than expected however, thanks to that tricky old thing called the real world, but finally Eddie Brock and his alien (don’t call me) parasite Venom (both played by Tom Hardy once more) are back, and they are facing their comic book arch nemesis Carnage. And y’know what, it’s the most fun you just might have at the movies this year!
The film is set shortly after the events of the first, as Eddie and Venom grow frustrated in living together (quite literally), with Eddie wanting some peace and relaxation, and Venom wanting freedom…and to dine on baddie’s heads over his strict chicken and chocolate diet (lucky swine). But, as serial...

As anyone who has spent a minute or two on Tik Tok can tell you, songs from the Venom movie franchise have a prosperity to go viral…not entirely unlike the alien symbiote himself.
A track from legendary rapper Eminem, fittingly titled “Venom,” that was featured in the 2018 Tom Hardy film has popped up all over the Internet in recent years. Here is a particular favorite example of mine.
Yes, most of these memes have to do with filicide. Read into that what you may. Now that the long-awaited sequel to Venom is out, Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage, shouldn’t we be expecting another quality Eminem song to go along with it? The answer to that, as it turns out, is a resounding: yes!

Kiana Madeira listened to everything from Snoop Dogg to Tracy Chapman to prepare for her roles in the “Fear Street” slasher trilogy – films that respectively take place in 1994, 1978 and 1666.
“I think the music is like another character in the story for all three films—the soundtrack as well as the score,” Madeira told TheWrap. “They had such a big part in telling the story and the trajectory of what the characters were going though.
The “Fear Street” trilogy centers around Shadyside teens who, after multiple gruesome killings, get together to take on the evil force that’s been tormenting their town for centuries. Many Shadyside residents believe the force to be a doing of the witch, Sarah Fier, who is said to have placed a curse on the town before her death in 1666.

Horror fans tuning into the final installment of Netflix’s trilogy “Fear Street,” based on the R.L Stine books, are transported back to 1666 to experience a nightmare that has been haunting the town of Shadyside for generations: a witch hunt.
To create the soundscape, composer Anna Drubich, influenced by Ari Aster’s 2019 release “Midsommar” and helped along with her training as a classical composer, worked with Marco Beltrami to come up with an experimental vibe. She talked to Variety about her process.
Since you were coming in to score the last film in the trilogy, what kind of conversations did you have prior?
Leigh Janiak had the idea that each movie would be set in different eras. So, for “Fear Street: 1994,” there was the obvious score and music which was influenced by “Scream.” With “Fear Street: 1978,” she wanted something influenced by Jerry Goldsmith, along the lines of “Alien.

[Editor’s note: The following post contains light spoilers for “Fear Street Part 2: 1978.”]
Hear the words “’70s-set summer camp slasher,” and you’ll likely think of such horror mainstays as “Friday the 13th”, “Sleepaway Camp,” or “The Burning,” classic entries in the sub-genre that Leigh Janiak’s second “Fear Street” movie ably fits alongside. As its title tells us, Janiak’s “Fear Street Part 2: 1978” is set in the waning days of the decade, as a pack of teens and kids (most of them ill-fated) enjoy a summer spent at Ohio’s own Camp Nightwing.
The film picks up after Janiak’s “Fear Street Part 1: 1994,” which introduces audiences to (some) of the strange history of the towns that supply Camp Nightwing’s seasonal residents, including down-market Shadyside and seemingly perfect Sunnyvale. When the two sets of townspeople come together to spend the summer, old fractures emerge and new bonds form, all of them tied up in the murderous backstory that drives Janiak’s ambitious trilogy.

As someone who absolutely adores slasher movies and considers Wes Craven’s Scream to be one of the best and most consistent franchises ever committed to celluloid, I was the prime audience for Leigh Janiak’s Fear Street: 1994, which lovingly pays tribute to Scream in a variety of ways (including Marco Beltrami’s score from the original film), but also sets out to do its own thing as well. And while Fear Street: 1994 absolutely nails all of its slasher tropes and fully embraces mid-’90s nostalgia to a T, what I really appreciated is how the story is also infused with a supernatural bent, making it a standout effort from Janiak and everyone involved that does a brilliant job of creating something of a horror-centric cinematic universe utilizing the works of R.L. Stine as its backdrop.

Silence proved golden in John Krasinski’s hit directorial debut horror A Quiet Place back in 2018. As audiences’ collective senses and hairs were raised by a family surviving the sound stalking alien invaders that had terrorised and all but ravaged the earth. Now, it is time to return to this post-apocalyptic style near future, in the long awaited Part II, which has been much delayed by a very real plague, but its return would not be denied, and cinemas are the best place to be for what is one of the greatest horror sequels in recent memory. In fact – I threaten backing myself in a minority opinion corner here – A Quiet Place Part II breathes that rare air of being a sequel that is even better than the original.

A Quiet Place Part II, director John Krasinski’s follow-up to his 2018 hit film, follows the Abbott family as they continue their silent fight for survival in an unforgiving and desolate world where the creatures that are hunting them via sound are only one of the threats they must overcome.
This chapter begins with a brief flashback recounting the initial moments of the invasion whose aftermath was dramatized in the first film. After which the Abbotts set out in search of the other survivors that have continued to light the beacons that Lee (Krasinski) had diligently kept lit throughout the first chapter of this saga. Once they have ventured beyond the confines of their established “sand” path, Evelyn (Emily Blunt), Regan (Millicent Simmonds), and Marcus (Noah Jupe) must find a way to stay one step ahead of the creatures hunting them while attempting to locate more survivors such as themselves.

The trailer for the long-awaited “Venom” sequel is finally here — and so is the new villain Carnage.
Viewers get a sneak peek at the red symbiote character from the comics, who was briefly introduced at the end of the first “Venom” film, released in 2018.
In the trailer, Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), a crazed serial killer, survives a lethal injection in prison, which appears to awaken the symbiote inside of him and transforms him into Carnage. He and Tom Hardy, whose character Eddie Brock has made some peace with his alter-ego Venom, battle it out in a massive symbiote showdown.
“Venom: Let There Be Carnage” is set to release on Sept. 24, 2021. Originally scheduled for October 2020, the film has been delayed several times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, most recently getting pushed back one week from Sept. 17 to Sept. 24.

In 2018, John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place turned silence into the building blocks of fright and forged from the horror-thriller genre a modern fable of family love, communication and survival. With its mix of relentless tension and layered storytelling about a tightknit clan fending off an immensely destructive, sound-attuned alien force, the film became a startling hit and cultural phenomenon. Now comes the story’s unnerving second chapter, which picks up right where the Abbott family left off. But A Quiet Place Part II also heads to new places as events hurtle past the fragile sanctuary of the “sand path” the Abbotts created in order to prevail in a reality where even a single footstep could be deadly—and into a world of infinite peril beyond.
On Thursday Paramount Pictures released the final trailer, along with a terrific video featuring director John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, for “Omg, we-can’t-wait-for-the-sequel” A Quiet Place Part II.

The release of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” has been delayed one week from Sept. 17 to Sept. 24.
The sequel, which stars Tom Hardy, was most recently pushed to September from June 25 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The one-week delay of “Venom 2” means that the movie will no longer premiere on the same day as murder mystery “Death of the Nile” and the animated children’s film “The Boss Baby: Family Business.” Other films opening on Sept. 24 include “Dear Evan Hansen” and “The Sopranos” prequel film “The Many Saints of Newark.”
However, its late September release date will still ensure the film has ample space between other big names like James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” on Aug. 6 and Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited “Dune” on Oct. 1.
The follow-up to 2018’s “Venom,” directed by Andy Serkis, sees Hardy reprising his role as the alien symbiote, who originally appears as one of...

Director Doug Liman spun an exceedingly high-concept science-fiction premise into narrative gold with “Edge of Tomorrow,” but in “Chaos Walking,” the concept is all there is.
There’s no shortage of imaginative sci-fi details or of talented actors on-hand, but the film boils down to characters we barely get to know chasing each other and yelling. That it hardly matters who’s being chased or what, exactly, is being yelled — mostly “Stop her!” and “Aaauuuggghhh!” — is just part of the trouble here.
Patrick Ness and Christopher Ford adapt Ness’ novel “The Knife of Never Letting Go,” about future human colonists living on a planet where human thoughts can be seen and heard by others. It’s a phenomenon known as “Noise,” and noise of every kind is definitely the dominant motif of the screen version.
