"Having a little pot makes you a criminal?" No, no it doesn't. An official promo trailer is available for an indie film titled Grassland, the first feature film made by two up-and-coming filmmakers Sam Friedman and William Bermudez based in LA. This recently premiered at the 2024 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival a few weeks ago. The film, which is executive produced by Common, explores the failures of the criminal justice system through a different Pov, and is a riveting social justice thriller highlighting the perils of marijuana incarceration. The story follows a single Latina mother, starring Mía Maestro, whose illegal marijuana business is put at risk when her young son Leo, portrayed by Ravi Cabot-Conyers (from Encanto), befriends their new neighbors who move in downstairs—a white boy played by Sean Convery and his police officer grandfather. It also stars Quincy Isaiah, Jeff Kober, and Rachel Ticotin. I'm glad...

As far as late ‘80s and early ‘90s sci-fi goes, it’s tough to top RoboCop and Total Recall, two wildly astute takes on what the current climate was and what we could expect in the future from major corporations and technology. Not surprisingly, studios felt the need to give “updates” to both in the 21st century. For the most part, both failed. But that’s not just us saying so, as original RoboCop and Total Recall director Paul Verhoeven has chimed in with his takes on both.
Regarding Robocop, Verhoeven took issue with the 2014 movie, which starred Joel Kinnaman – who himself knew his version was far removed from the 1987 original – over its lack of subtleties and nuances, in addition to how the filmmakers tried to develop the central character. “The problem there, I felt, was that he was really aware that he lost all his legs and arms. Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 Total Recall (f*ck that remake btw) remains an iconic and enduring classic in the realm of action and sci-fi. Add the overly aggressive blood squibs, imaginative production design, top-notch action, Verhoeven’s signature satirical flair, and you have yourself an absolute classic. Today Lance and The Arrow discuss one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s best film! Peak Schwarzenegger baby!
Total Recall stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox and Michael Ironside and is about:
When a man goes in to have virtual vacation memories of the planet Mars implanted in his mind, an unexpected and harrowing series of events forces him to go to the planet for real – or is he?
The M.O. of The Arrow in the Head Show is: After many years behind the scenes, we’ve decided to take our sarcastic, booze-influenced style into the video age with The Arrow In The Head Show!

“Beneath the Grass,” a drama about the criminal justice system and marijuana incarceration rates, will hit the market at the Cannes Film Festival next week.
Mía Maestro, Quincy Isaiah and Jeff Kober will lead the film, which begins production next month in New Jersey. Paradigm is representing worldwide sales for the film.
“Beneath the Grass” is set in 2008, capturing both the economic recession and the “Yes We Can” summer, and follows a single Latina mother whose illegal marijuana business is jeopardized when her young son befriends the new neighbors, a young white boy and his police officer grandfather.
According to production research, in 2008, Latino people were four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white people, while Black people were seven times more likely. Despite marijuana legalization in several states in the years since, the research explains, arrest rates have risen with racial disparities still prevalent.

Most would agree that Paul Verhoeven‘s Total Recall is one of the best two or three Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. It’s definitely up there in the pantheon of great action movies, with it standing the test of time very well over the years, with not even a lousy remake taking the shine off this gem. Ultra-violent and often hilarious, it’s Verhoeven at his most unhinged, with Arnold Schwarzenegger playing Douglas Quaid, an ordinary guy who just might be a secret agent from Mars named Hauser.
Verhoeven directed Total Recall from a screenplay by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, and Gary Goldman (Jon Povill also receives a story credit), based on the novelette “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. The film has the following synopsis:
Douglas Quaid is a bored construction worker in the year 2084 who dreams of visiting the colonized Mars. He visits “Rekall,...

This week’s horror and sci-fi home media releases are a fun bunch, as we have a lot of great new movies to look forward to, as well as a ton of killer classic titles headed home to various formats. If you missed it in theaters, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is being released alone and then alongside the first two Ghostbusters films as a three-movie collection, and for those of you who love mind-blowing animation, you’re going to definitely want to check out The Spine of Night. One of my favorite films from 2021 was Danishka Esterhazy’s Slumber Party Massacre, so if you missed seeing it then, now you can catch up with it courtesy of Scream Factory.
In terms of older titles, several of my favorite movies are headed to Blu-ray this week from the fine folks at Kino Lorber: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and both F/X...

As I dug into the brand new 4K release of Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall, it struck me that it had been nearly 15 years since I last sat down and watched it. And once it was over, I realized just how much of a mistake that was, because Total Recall is still a brutally fun and somewhat trippy experience that definitely ushered in a new era of heady sci-fi action films throughout the 1990s and also proved that, heading into a new decade, Arnold Schwarzenegger was still the tops when it came to headlining ambitious cinematic projects that went against the grain.
If you’re reading this, chances are you probably have a good idea of what Total Recall is all about, so I’ll keep this overview brief. Based on the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” Total Recall transports us to the...

The 1980s were littered with small production companies, many of which had one or two notable successes and a lot of schlock. As the audience tastes changed, and the blockbuster became ever more important, these houses – Golan-Globus, Cannon, Avco Embassy, and of course, Carolco. That latter studio had one surprise smash hit, First Blood, with Sylvester Stallone. They were a company on the rise.
During all of this, a screenplay adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s “We Can Remember it for you Wholesale” from Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett had been floating from studio to studio. It proved a tough sell and a tough story to crack but Dino DeLaurentis seemed game until his Dune sunk in the sand.
By then, Arnold Schwarzenegger was aware of the project and wanted to be the star and when Dino let go, he convinced Carolco to buy it. Arnold’s deal was a big paycheck but more importantly,...

It was 30 years ago that TriStar Pictures released Total Recall, a sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ronny Cox, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, and Rachel Ticotin. Based loosely on a story by Philip K. Dick called “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” the movie starred Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid, a construction worker in the year 2084 who begins having strange dreams about a mysterious woman and the Earth colony that exists on Mars.
His wife Lori (Stone) dismisses the dreams, but it turns out they’re not dreams at all but memories: Quaid is actually a secret agent named Hauser who once worked for the governor of the Martian colony (Cox) but has had his memories wiped and replaced with false ones. Lori is not his wife at all, but an operative for the governor and the wife of Richter (Ironside), the governor’s ruthless fixer.

A forgotten gem of the late 1970s comes to Blu-ray for the first time, Frank Pierson’s adaptation of the novel King of the Gypsies. Notable for several reasons, namely as the credited debut for actor Eric Roberts and a star studded cast packed to distraction, this is the kind of pulp oddity often whisked off the shelves of the bestseller list for glossy cinematic reinterpretation. This gypsy saga was based on a novel by Peter Maas, better known as the biographer of Serpico, which resulted in the novel inspiring Sidney Lumet’s classic 1973 film starring Al Pacino. Eventually, Maas’ works, often revolving around sensational true crime treatments, would be adapted mainly for television (including the 1991 Valerie Bertinelli Lifetime film, In a Child’s Name), and this sometimes outlandish antique feels like an exaggerated heirloom in the Harold Robbins’ vein (The Carpetbaggers; The Betsy; The Adventurers), a frumpy comparison...

The Paul Verhoeven filmography screens at the Tiff Bell Lightbox through April 4th, culminating in a screening of his new “crowdsourced” film, Tricked.
Common wisdom dictates that cynicism and sentimentality are carefully linked, if not outright synonymous. In filmic terms, the most comfortable formulation of that argument is to align, for instance, romantic comedies with socially-acceptable (and, often, utterly noxious) notions of gender politics. Through the deployment of relationships and character profiles that support popular notions of how women and men behave, these movies are able to exploit comfortable mores in order to mainline easy pathos. What’s less common is to consider how that relationship between affect and effect can be subverted, perhaps because it’s relatively rare for truly subversive artists to be handed the proverbial keys to the kingdom.

Total Recall
Directed by Paul Verhoeven
Written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon and Gary Goldman
1990, USA
Based on a Philip K. Dick short story (We Can Remember It for You Wholesale), Total Recall is set in a futuristic society, where “it has become scientifically possible to implant fake memories into a person’s mind, while erasing their previous identity, thus creating a fictitious persona in such that the subject believes he or she is someone else.” The filmmakers took great liberty with the original story, but, luckily Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett (respected writers of some of the greatest science fiction films), whipped up one of the best produced Hollywood screenplays of the 1990′s.
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Quaid, a 21st-century construction worker in 2084 who discovers that his entire memory of the past derives from a memory chip implanted in his brain. In seeking out the truth, he...

In an unusual move, NCIS: Los Angeles is going political this fall and has cast Rachel Ticotin as a political figure for its new venture. Is it a shock that politics would come up in a television series, especially so close to the election? Not really, but this will still be an unusual episode for NCIS: La in how the politics will be presented. Some viewers may even be put off by the subject matter the cast and Ticotin will be acting out. Personally, I think its brave what the show will be trying to do and kudos for Ticotin for taking on the role given to her.

Rachel Ticotin has received NCIS: Los Angeles‘ vote to play a politician in a button-pushing election year-themed episode.
TVLine has learned that the actress will guest-star in the fourth episode of Season 4 as Monica Tenez, whom showrunner Shane Brennan describes as “the sort of candidate that everyone would love to vote for this year — and by that I mean, if you looked at the Occupy movement and the general mood towards politicians and their dysfunctionality, here’s a candidate that you would love to vote for.”

The 1990 sci-fi classic Total Recall starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was based on Philip K. Dick's short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.
So when it came to remaking it, the obvious questions were whether audiences would know it all too well and whether the filmmakers would re-create it all too reverently.
We didn't want to feel like we were sat in that Rekall chair being injected with something so familiar it wasn't at all exciting.
Thankfully, director Len Wiseman steers clear of replicating the earlier version and delivers a visual treat that, as seen on The Giant Screen digital cinema in Birmingham, blended CGI with practical sets as convincingly and seamlessly as the story itself blends truth and fantasy. You really cannot tell what is real and what isn't, thanks to modern filmmaking technology. For the viewer to have their own 'is this real?' experience on top...

Paul Verhoeven's 1990 Total Recall, based on Philip K Dick's short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, was a lively dystopian sci-fi thriller set on Earth and Mars run by an authoritarian government that exaggerated the influences of a rebel force in order to remain in power. Directed by Len Wiseman (best known as a special effects expert and as director of the dismal Underworld vampire films), this remake is a dull movie. It largely sticks to the original's plot but is set entirely on our planet, now run as the United Federation of Britain, with two chief centres – a version of London and, on the other side of the globe, the Colony, which is little different from the polluted Los Angeles of Blade Runner. The two parts are connected by a lift that goes through the Earth's core. Colin Farrell is an unsatisfactory replacement for Arnold Schwarzenegger...

As is pretty inevitable with any remake, this week’s hot new release Total Recall is currently undergoing a million and a half comparisons to the 1990 original. Both movies, based on a Philip K. Dick story called “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,” concern a man named Douglas Quaid who is plagued by disturbing nightmares and visits a service called Rekall that promises to improve your life by implanting new memories into your brain. Both movies also star an incredibly good-looking cast that make us look forward to a future in which everyone’s bodies will be perfectly toned. Since we’ve yet to catch the new flick, we here at VH1 Celebrity are going to tackle this comparison a little differently: by superficially comparing stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin to Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel. Oh, and we haven’t forgotten baddies Ronny Cox and Bryan Cranston,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger turns 65 years old today -- and with a remake of his classic 1990 flick "Total Recall" out this week, what better time to check in with the original cast?By the time the former Governator starred as construction worker/secret agent Doug Quaid in the Mars movie, Arnold had a steady stream of hits under his belt ... including "Conan the Barbarian," "Terminator," "Predator" and "Twins." He'd go on to have five children with now-estranged wife Maria Shriver, hold office as the Governor of California from 2003-2011 and star in movies like "True Lies," "Batman and Robin" and "The Expendables." He also fathered a secret child with his maid. But what about the rest of the cast? Check out the gallery above to see how Sharon Stone, Rachel Ticotin and even the famous three-breasted prostitute look like now in the gallery above ... plus, find out what they've been up to lately!

It sure looks like Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and Jessica Biel make for quite a twisted threesome in Len Wiseman’s “Total Recall” reboot. I don’t think there was this much interaction in the original movie once Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin met and did battle in the hallway of a hotel. Of course, when you have Kate Beckinsale in your movie playing a sexy villain, I suppose it would be insane to kill her off too quickly. Check out a new clip from “Total Recall”, people who enjoy checking out clips from Hollywood reboots. A factory worker, Douglas Quaid, begins to suspect that he is a spy after visiting Rekall – a company that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a life they would like to have led – goes wrong and he finds himself on the run. Besides the three bickering kids, the film co-stars Bryan Cranston,...

In case you never saw the original “Total Recall”, the folks behind the rebooted “Total Recall” has a convenient two-minutes plus featurette that fills you in on the film’s plot. Nothing too spoiler-y and such, so feel free to take a gander at it, take a ganders. (By the way, from Rachel Ticotin to Jessica Biel? Seems a tad … plain, don’t you think? And you’re talking to a pretty big fan of Jessica Biel’s, er, talents here, folks.) Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man.

Total Recall: Ultimate Rekall Edition
Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Ronny Cox | Written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, Jon Povill, Gary Goldman | Directed by Paul Verhoeven
Total Recall is arguably a film that sits firmly in the domain of cinematic nostalgia and has definite cult status. People look at the remake that is currently being publicised and as usual some look forward to it and some complain that it’s a remake that is just not needed. I think my view is that it’s a remake that needs to be done right. The original, while good, is a flawed throwback to eighties schlock sci-fi classics but got lost in translation of constant re-writes and ever changing directors; Strangely though it still holds up and for its time is quite an ambitious tale.

Jessica Biel has spoken about her bitch-fight with fellow actress Kate Beckinsale.
Biel, who wrestled with co-star Kate Beckinsale in the remake of Total Recall, directed by Beckinsale’s husband Len Wiseman, told this month’s Empire magazine: “I was so fearful of hitting her. I was thinking, ‘Please don’t let me hit this woman in the face! Her husband is watching! And then I hit her.”
"And then I hit her"
The scene is a new spin on the famous catfight between their 1990 equivalents — Sharon Stone predating Beckinsale as the villainous Lori; Rachel Ticotin leaving footsteps for Biel to follow as the heroic Melina.
“There’s a tongue-in-cheek element to that movie, and to their fight sequence,” laughs Beckinsale, “which has high kicks and workout clothes. It’s very enjoyable, but that doesn’t really have a place in the tone of our movie. But I like the...

Check out a new pic (above) from Len Wiseman’s sci-fi reboot of “Total Recall”. Colin Farrell and Jessica Biel co-stars in the actioner, and the two are featured in the new pic dodging bullets. Lots and lots of bullets. Farrell, of course, is playing the Arnold Schwarzenegger role, while Biel is playing Melina, originally played by Rachel Ticotin in the original. She’s got a lot to live up to, that’s for sure. Ticotin really brought a lot of spunk to the role. Based on the Philip K. Dick story, the remake finds Farrell playing Douglas Quaid, a bored Everyman whose trip to a little place called Rekall (run by John Cho, natch) brings him all kinds of trouble. See, kids, this is what happens when you get bored while being married to Kate Beckinsale. I mean, how is that even possible? Also starring Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy,...

My recollection is a little hazy since I first strapped myself in to Planet Fanboy's glowing chair of imagination (it reclines!) but, looking at this week's hot trailer, I have this nagging feeling that I've seen this "Total Recall" film before. Or at least something like it. I can't put my finger on it but. . .wait!
"Total Recall" is eerily similar to a movie from 1990 called "Total Recall," but it still comes off as different.
But if "Total Recall" isn't "Total Recall," then what the hell is it?
Leading Men
In 1990, the role of Doug Quaid was played by a ridiculous block of cement with an Austrian accent. I'm still not sure how it happened, but this guy, through sheer force of will, managed to become the world's biggest movie star. (He later switched careers and did something really low profile... gardening, maybe.)

Props to “Total Recall” reboot director Len Wiseman for casting his wife Kate Beckinsale in the sexy, dangerous bitch role originally played by Sharon Stone in the movie. If Beckinsale asked for the role, then she is way hotter than I thought, and I thought she was pretty damn hot to begin with. If she didn’t, then dinner conversation must be a tad awkward. Either way, check out the new, full trailer for the reboot. It probably looks too much like original movie in terms of key scenes for my liking, but the rest looks okay. As for Jessica Biel? Give me Rachel Ticotin any day. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Total Recall Compare the Total Recall 1990 trailer below to the Total Recall 2012 trailer released today. You'll notice a few things: Arnold Schwarzenegger is a much worse actor than Colin Farrell. Sharon Stone was in movies before Basic Instinct. Special effects play a much smaller role in the 1990 trailer, which places a much stronger emphasis on philosophical musings, "humorous" lines, and old-fashioned action sequences. The old trailer also tells you the whole plot of the film. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the original Total Recall featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Rachel Ticotin, Michael Ironside, Ronny Cox, and Marshall Bell. The 2012 remake was directed by Len Wiseman. In addition to Colin Farrell, also featured are Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy, Bokeem Woodbine, Ethan Hawke, Steve Byers, and John Cho.

Colin Farrell, Total Recall trailer "If I'm not me, then who the hell am I?" That sounds like a line from Alan Parker's Angel Heart, in which Mickey Rourke plays a guy possessed by Robert De Niro. Or perhaps something out of Carl Reiner's All of Me, in which Steve Martin gets (sort of) possessed by Lily Tomlin. But no. Colin Farrell is the identity-challenged guy in this year's Total Recall remake, whose trailer (please scroll down) was released today. Are his memories his own or have they been implanted? If they're not his own, is he still himself or has he become someone else? Now, don't expect to much philosophical questioning in Len Wiseman's remake of Paul Verhoeven's classic-ish sci-fi/thriller. At least if the trailer is any indication of what the movie will be like: a big-screen videogame featuring big weapons, hot women, nonstop action,...

This isn't your ... uh, father's "Total Recall"?
The let's-do-a-remake game continues with the first trailer from the reboot of the 1990 action hit starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In the new version, Colin Farrell takes over the Ah-nuld role of Douglas Quaid, a worker whose nightmares have lead him to believe he was once a spy whose memory has since been erased.
The role of Quaid's wife, Lori -- originally played by Sharon Stone -- is now played by Kate Beckinsale, and Rachel Ticotin's Melina has gone to Jessica Biel. (Unfortunately, this first trailer has no sign of the main villain, Vilos Cohaagen, played by Bryan Cranston.)
As you can see from the clip above, the big difference between the original film and the new one will likely be the special effects. The updated version has a sleek, futuristic design and slick camerawork (Although, not sure Farrell's Quaid would stand a chance against Schwarzenegger's.
