A trickle is becoming a flood for Bluesky, the social media company that has seen spectacular growth since the presidential election. On Tuesday, the microblogging platform hit 20 million users, after averaging 1 million new users per day over the past five days.

According to a Nov. 13 post by Bluesky CEO Jay Graber, the site had 6 million users in late August, nearly 11 million in late October and hit 15 million users on Nov. 15. It added another 5 million users in just five days, with the explosive growth seen since Nov. 5, the day of the election, accelerating.

Bluesky has been one of the main beneficiaries of millions of users leaving Elon Musk’s X, as the site formerly known as Twitter descends into a mess of bots, extreme content, crypto scams, ads, pornography, racism, transphobia and misinformation.

There are a lot of people making a move from the Elon Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter) to Bluesky.

The micro-blogging social media platform, considered by some to be an alternative to X and the Meta-owned Threads, has gained millions of additional new users, especially since the 2024 presidential election, amid criticism of X’s toxic nature and bot overload.

Dean Parisot's 1999 sci-fi/comedy "Galaxy Quest" puts an interesting spin on the traditional "Seven Samurai" formula. In Kurosawa's classic, an impoverished village, regularly beset by food-thieving bandits, seeks out an army of samurai protectors to defend them. The villagers, however, have no money, and only manage to attract seven samurai in dire straits of their own. The samurai, however, find a certain kind of weary, bemused nobility in their job, and agree to stage the best possible defense they can.

In Parisot's film, the beleaguered villagers are innocent, defenseless space aliens who are being murdered off by genocidal reptile men. The aliens, called Thermians, travel to Earth looking for brave space-faring heroes to defend them, specifically, they are looking for the stars of "Galaxy Quest," a decades-old "Star Trek"-like sci-fi TV series. The aliens have been watching rogue TV signals for years, and came to assume that "Galaxy Quest" was nonfiction.

In the hours following the news of Maggie Smith’s death at age 89, numerous of the two-time Oscar winner’s friends, including King Charles, Whoopi Goldberg, Viola Davis, and the actress’ Harry Potter castmates, have shared touching tributes to the performer on social media.

Her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin revealed her death in a statement to Rolling Stone Friday, saying she died in the hospital with “friends and family” at her side, who were “devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.” No cause of death was given.

How do you untangle a feud that's lasted half a century, spanning the distance of an entire sci-fi franchise and several fictional galaxies? It's a challenge to be sure, but it's clear even to the naked eye that "Star Trek" stars George Takei and William Shatner have a whole lot of baggage. Their distaste for one another is no secret; they've been known to unpack it publicly during interviews, in books, and via social media posts, even decades after they last worked together. Now in their 80s and 90s respectively, the pair still grab headlines for the occasional verbal swipe at one another.

The franchise did a good job of creating unique and dynamic stories, with lessons to share sprinkled in, promoting a future of prosperity and community.

The United States of America will soon be met with its 60th quadrennial presidential elections later this year, and the buzz surrounding who could win is as strong as ever. Amidst this, previous statements of Star Trek legend George Takei sharing his take on who could be a better leader for the country have also resurfaced. Reruns allowed Trekkies to watch episodes multiple times, and develop their own theories about the Enterprise, about the show's technical devices, and about the characters' backstories.

While X-Men '97 was a hot favourite to win the Emmy for "Outstanding Animated Program" yesterday evening, the Marvel Animation series was beaten by Netflix's Blue Eye Samurai.

That relatively obscure adult animation series also soundly defeated The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, and Scavengers Reign.

While some of Blue Eye Samurai's fanbase might take issue with it being described as "obscure," it certainly didn't receive the same level of mainstream attention as Marvel Studios' X-Men: The Animated Series revival. Still, that never matters when it comes to awards and the show was clearly deemed superior.

When the show debuted in 1999, its lobster claw was on the pulse of wisecracking liberal escapism. The natural evolution of The Simpsons, Futurama represented the best of Gen X and millennial humor.

It surpassed The Simpsons in many ways because it could delve deeper into surrealism and even apocalyptic (but funny) scenarios. There was no “net” of a nuclear family to fall back on.

Blue Eye Samurai is an absolute gem of a show. Since its debut in November, this animated Netflix hit has become a major cult favorite, with many claiming it’s one of the best shows of its kind…well…ever? Some Trekkies might be able to tell you that filming "Star Trek: The Original Series" wasn't always a pleasant experience for the cast. Indeed, stars William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were both notorious spotlight hogs and Shatner was known to reassign other actors' dialogue to himself, usually badgering directors until they agreed. Nimoy, meanwhile, knew that his character, Spock, was the most recognizable element of the show, and was happy to promote himself as the star of the series. The clash of egos reportedly got so bad that show creator Gene Roddenberry had to write an angry letter to the two lead actors (also DeForest Kelley) admonishing them for their bratty behavior. "You've pretty well divided up the market on selfishness and egocentricity," Roddenberry wrote.

Trekkies will hasten to point out that, while Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley were the only three cast members listed in the show's opening credits, "Star Trek...

Trekkies know by now that William Shatner had a hostile relationship with the rest of the cast during the years of filming Star Trek: The Original Series. Some actors like George Takei still hold resentment toward Shatner for his behavior years ago. But even Shatner’s haters would need to bow down to him for the commitment he showed towards Star Trek in the face of a personal tragedy.

Shatner’s father Joe Shatner died in Miami in 1967 when the actor was filming episodes of the first season of Star Trek. He never told anyone about his loss and left quietly after the day’s shoot to attend the memorial. He returned the next week to film the rest of the series.

Blue Eye Samurai is hands down one of the best adult animated shows on Netflix. Back in December 2023, the show was renewed for a second season, and fans have been patiently waiting for new updates on the upcoming installment. As of Aug. 19, we received some new information on season 2, but unfortunately, it's not good news at all.

During an August 2024 interview with Collider, Blue Eye Samurai creators Michael Green and Amber Noizumi, producer and director Jane Wu, and sound supervisor Myron Nettinga revealed some new information about the second season, like where they are in the production process, how many episodes there will be, and when fans can expect it to come out.

It's no secret that William Shatner's co-stars from the original "Star Trek" weren't very fond of him. Because he was at the top of the call-sheet, Shatner often considered himself the star of the show ... and he behaved accordingly. When looking at the reception they’ve received for “Blue Eye Samurai,” show creators Michael Green and Amber Noizumi see one recurring bit of flattery that really delights them. “One of the best compliments we’ve gotten is people keep asking us, where did you get the rights to the books and we have to remind them there were no books. At today’s Gremlins: The Wild Batch panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, Max unleashed a flurry of exciting casting announcements for the second season of the hit animated prequel series. During the “Gremlins: The Wild Batch” panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, Max announced that Simu Liu will be joining the main cast of the animated series and that John Glover, a member of the “Gremlins” family, will return as a guest voice. The return date for the series was also confirmed, as “Gremlins: The Wild Batch” will premiere on Thursday, Oct, 3 — just in time for spooky season!

Kamala Harris will become the first vice president to cameo on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars making drag history.

The All Stars Season 9 finale episode will begin with a special appearance from the vice president of the United States and the possible Democratic presidential hopeful.

VP Harris has a message for LGBTQ+ voters and allies to get out and vote.

“Each day we are seeing our rights and freedoms under attack, including the right of everyone to be who they are, love who they love, openly and with pride,” she said.

Hundreds of thousands of Kamala Harris supporters have rallied behind the presumptive Democratic nominee this week, with Zoom calls breaking records with six-digit attendance numbers.

The events started Sunday following President Joe Biden’s announcement he would not seek re-election. More than 44,000 Black women joined a call to galvanize supporters for the vice president’s historic run for president, drawing celebrity names — including Yvette Nicole Brown and Jenifer Lewis — and raising an estimated $1.5 million.

The trend continued with thousands of Black men on a call earlier this week, followed by Zooms for white women, LGBTQ supporters, South Asian supporters and more.

At the white women call Thursday night, “Answering the Call for Kamala Harris,” there were more than 100,000 participants, a number so staggering it caused significant technical glitches that sent many to watch the livestream on YouTube, where more than 25,000 also joined the call.
