Here at JoBlo Horror Originals we talk a lot about gateway horror films. Depending on the generation you belong to, that can be a few different things. Kids of the 70s will always have Jaws as an introduction to horror and that movie is still a great way to introduce newer generations to the genre after almost 50 years. Two of my favorites from the 80’s, and two films that both my sons have seen, are The Gate and The Monster Squad. Again, both great and both still hold up as not only fun horror flicks but great ways to ease in the younger crowd. As a kid born in 1985, I am much more a child of the 90s so even if you hadn’t read the title of the video you clicked, you could probably guess that I saw Jurassic Park in theaters, it scared and enthralled me and made me want more.

During his career, the late Philip Baker Hall was one of the most underrated character actors in Hollywood. Hall's earliest on-screen role came back in 1970, but he gained praise for several "breakout" roles later in life, including an outstanding late-'90s streak that included "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia," and "The Talented Mr. Ripley." By the time of his passing in 2022, everyone seemed to know Hall's great work, even if he wasn't a household name. But according to Hall himself, the world first got to know him by another name that stuck with him for decades: Lieutenant Bookman from "Seinfeld."
Lieutenant Bookman was one of many idiosyncratic characters who stepped through the comedic revolving door that was "Seinfeld." The character, played by Hall, appeared in just two episodes of the hyper-popular sitcom -- season 3's "The Library" and the show's polarizing series finale -- but he made a strong impression. Michael Richards did a lot of justice to the character of Kramer on Seinfeld, a hit sitcom that came out in 1989. The 75-year-old actor and former stand-up comedian was partially responsible for the show’s success, as Kramer’s persona was loud and quite impactful.

Seinfeld lasted for nearly a decade before airing its final season in 1998. Richards also got a couple of projects to work on before appearing in his final (or latest) film Faith, Hope & Love in 2019. Sometimes, actors tend to become the characters they portray on screen, and for Richards, Kramer became a slight annoyance.

Colin Farrell is far from the first person to make his mark playing famous Batman rogue The Penguin in HBO’s aptly named new series “The Penguin.”
Of all the superheroes, Batman’s villains are the most recognizable. Among them The Penguin stands as possibly the most recognizable behind only the Joker. That’s led to quite a number of actors getting a crack at the character over the years beginning way back in the mid-60s.
There have been a few one-off performances in TV or animated movies where people lent their voice, but these 10 performers made their mark on the character especially felt. Before you get too deep into “The Penguin,” go back and appreciate the long history of the Batman villain on the big and small screen.

This article contains spoilers for the "Toy Story" movies.
When John Lasseter's "Toy Story" was released in 1995, it was a coup for the industry. CGI had been used in films for a decade and there were myriad computer-animated short films, but the first theatrically released, fully-computer-animated feature changed the landscape. It certainly helped that "Toy Story" was a massive success, raking in over $365 million on a mere $30 million budget. The film was also highly acclaimed, sporting a novel concept (your toys are alive when you aren't looking), an excellent screenplay, and a first-rate cast.
After "Toy Story," it felt like the floodgates opened, and a shift from traditionally animated features to fully computer-animated features occurred within the next five years. One might even recall when Disney announced that it would be shuttering its traditional animation studio and only make computer-animated features going forward. This was slightly before its 2004 film "Home on the Range" flopped.

There’s been a lot of online chatter over the years concerning the various irregularities of Jerry Seinfeld’s apartment on Seinfeld, from its apparent spatial impossibility, to the bookshelf full of Nintendo games and bootleg VHS porn. But Jerry’s bachelor pad isn’t the only abnormal apartment to be found at 129 West 81st Street.
In addition to the M.C. Escher-like weirdness of Jerry’s place, and the hot tub-equipped code violation nightmare belonging to Kramer, Jerry’s neighbor and nemesis Newman also rented a distinctly bizarre unit.
For starters, fans have noticed that Newman’s apartment, which has been confusingly referred to as both 5E and 5F, at one point had a pet bowl, despite the fact there’s no other reference to him having a pet. Most likely this unseen creature was a cat, considering that Newman has a passionate distaste/homicidal rage for canines.

The official announcement at D23 of Pixar’s Andrew Stanton writing and directing “Toy Story 5” is a big deal. Stanton has co-written the previous four “Toy Story” films, receiving Oscar nominations for the original and the third film.
But now as a director, he finally gets to be in total control of the franchise he helped establish. So if there was going to be a fifth “Toy Story,” he’s the perfect director for a couple of reasons.
The first is that, since “Wall-e,” Stanton has been fascinated with science fiction and the dangers of ubiquitous technology. The story for the fifth “Toy Story” allows him to double down on that fascination.
“Let’s be real,” Stanton told the packed Honda Center in Anaheim on Friday night. “Toys have some serious competition these days with phones, tablets, and technology everywhere. So, this time around, it’s toys vs. tech.

For twenty-five years, the Disney classic Tarzan has entertained audiences both young and old. The film, based on the popular Edgar Rice Burroughs novel series, is considered to be the last film of the Disney Renaissance, a period of films that helped rejuvenate the company and reestablish it as an animation juggernaut.
The story of a man raised by apes in the late nineteenth century lent itself well to an animated feature with wild and imaginative settings and action sequences. One of the most memorable episodes from Seinfeld’s early years found Jerry befriending his idol, New York Mets star Keith Hernandez, who Jerry clearly adores, but not enough to go all the way — i.e., help him move.
In order to beef up “The Boyfriend” into a two-part episode that could help boost ratings during sweeps week, the writers also wove in a storyline in which Hernandez dates Elaine and, most notably, they concocted an elaborate parody of Oliver Stone’s JFK.
As documented in a mock Zapruder film, Kramer and Newman accuse the first baseman of spitting on them following a 1987 loss to the Phillies. But as Jerry points out, via his “Magic Loogie” theory, their story is contradicted by the “immutable laws of physics,” suggesting the presence of a second spitter.
According to Larry David, this piece of the episode was inspired by one of the show’s writers,...

You never really know which spin-offs will work, but That ‘70s Show sequel That ‘90s Show has proven to be a hit with viewers, who turned to the show for exactly the reason why the original worked: nostalgia. Not surprisingly, the sitcom has been renewed for more groovy (or would it be phat?) times.
As unveiled at the Netflix Is A Joke Fest – which our own Chris Bumbray attended, even visiting the set of the sitcom – That ‘90s Show will return this year. The second part will debut on June 27th, while the third will drop on October 24th.

Racism and abandonment form the crux of the deeply tragic horror story Them: The Scare. Sadly, though, the two extremely important subject matters don’t quite gel well, thanks to the writers’ inability to find a seamless blend. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad show, though; it’s just that the latest season of Prime Video’s horror anthology series falls quite short of being something truly great. The in-your-face yellow filter also plays a role in that. It would have been much better had the show done away with it. What really works is the absolutely terrific acting performance by the cast, led by the magnificent Deborah Ayorinde, who returns to play a new character. Pam Grier is very impressive as the mother of Ayorinde’s lead, although she could have been utilized a lot more. And never in my life would I have imagined seeing someone...

Seinfeld is hailed as one of the greatest and most impactful shows in television history. Decades after its debut, the series remains culturally significant, thanks to its unforgettable cast and the quirky dynamics that made its premise so compelling.
Seinfeld
Among the memorable characters was the enigmatic mail carrier and Jerry’s self-proclaimed arch-nemesis, Newman, portrayed by Wayne Knight, who remained a fixture throughout the show’s run. The “door” that saved Kate Winset’s Rose — and doomed Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack — just sold at auction.
The fateful chunk of balsa wood from 1997’s Titanic fetched a whopping $718,750 during Heritage Auctions’ Treasures from Planet Hollywood event and was the piece of memorabilia that brought in the highest amount — beating iconic props like Indiana Jones’ bullwhip from Temple of Doom and Jack Nicholson’s ax from The Shining. While commonly referred to as a door, the auction notes the ornate structure was “in reality part of the door frame just above the [ship’s] first-class lounge entrance.”
In addition, Winslet’s chiffon dress that she wore during the film’s final act sold for $125,000.
Fans have famously debated whether both Jack and Rose could have fit on the panel, which would have in theory saved Jack from freezing to death in the final moments of the Oscar-winning film. Last year around the film’s 25th anniversary,...

Gus Van Sant’s 1995 satirical black comedy To Die For begins in the midst of a news frenzy: Larry Maretto (Matt Dillon), a well-liked man who helped his family run their small-town Italian restaurant, has been murdered and his wife, Suzanne (Nicole Kidman), has been arrested as a suspect. The rest of the film, which blends mockumentary talking heads and flashbacks of the characters’ lives, sends up the contemporaneous sensationalism of high-profile criminal trials like those of O.J. Simpson and the Menendez brothers. By showing the murder upfront, the film, written by the late Buck Henry, proceeds as a rebuke to the public’s fascination with whodunit by psychoanalyzing an already apprehended party.
Yet from the moment we first see Suzanne speaking directly into the camera in an interview, we need not spend too much time unpacking her psychological state. Perfectly coiffed and dressed in tones not quite bright enough to outshine her wide,...

Originally intended for a September 2022 theatrical release, New Line Cinema pushed the film to 2023 citing the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown for delays before removing it from its release calendar entirely. King’s 1975 novel was first adapted for the screen with CBS’s 1979 miniseries starring David Soul.
