Director Ridley Scott's historical feature "1492: Conquest of Paradise" (1992) dramatizes Italian explorer 'Christopher Columbus' and his travels to the 'New World', starring Gérard Depardieu, Armand Assante and Sigourney Weaver:
"...'Columbus' (Depardieu) is obsessed with making a trip westwards to Asia, but lacks crew and a ship. He is approached by 'Martín Pinzon', a shipowner from 'Palos', who introduces Columbus to the banker 'Santángel'.
"'Queen Isabella I' (Weaver) owes money to Santángel. Columbus meets with the queen, who grants him his journey in exchange for his promise to bring back sufficient amounts of riches in gold.
"Columbus tricks many crewmen by telling them that the voyage would only last seven weeks. Nine weeks go by and still no sign of land. At night, Columbus notices mosquitoes on the deck, indicating that land is not far off.

Gérard Depardieu and Michel Blanc in Tenue De Soirée: 'All at once, I had become an actor who was interesting enough for film directors known for their cinéma d’auteur' Photo: UniFrance One of French cinema’s major acting talents Michel Blanc who was part of the fabled cafe-theatre comedy troupe Le Splendide alongside the likes of Gérard Jugnot, Thierry Lhermitte and Josiane Balasko, has died after a heart attack at the age of 72.
Blanc who made his name in such cult comedy hits as Les Bronzés in 1978, moved to more dramatic roles in such dramas as Tenue De Soirée by Bertrand Blier opposite Gérard Depardieu (for which he scored a Cannes Film Festival best actor award), and also carved out a successful career as a director. His screenplay for Grosse fatigue in 1994 won him another Cannes award.
In one interview he explained the importance of Tenue De Soirée: “That film changed my career.

Pierre Niney plays the man behind the multiple masks in this fast-moving adaptation that needs a touch more finesse
There have been dozens of (mostly inadequate) attempts to adapt Alexandre Dumas’ behemoth payback yarn on film and TV, but it doesn’t stop people trying; this time, it’s the team behind the recent two-part Three Musketeers adaptation. Compared to the saturnine Gérard Depardieu in the well-regarded 1998 TV miniseries, lead actor Pierre Niney is a lightweight proposition as the count, playing his second major French icon after Yves Saint Laurent in 2014. But Niney’s physical slightness and poise lend something distinctive here, a hint of vulnerability underneath the multiple masks, a mortal psychological wound that can never be healed.
There’s no improving on Dumas’ timeless setup: young mariner Edmond Dantès (Niney) is imprisoned ad eternum in the Chateau d’If, Marseille’s own Devil’s Island, after being framed...

The Paris Prosecutor’s Office has requested that actor Gérard Depardieu stand trial in relation to rape allegations against him made by actress Charlotte Arnould, the French media reported on Thursday.
Arnould brought the charges in 2020, alleging Depardieu twice raped and assaulted her at his Paris home in August 2018. Depardieu, who denies the allegations, lost his appeal for the court to drop the case.
Speaking to French channel Bfmtv, Arnould’s lawyer Carine Durrieu-Diebolt called the request a “huge step forward towards a trial,” noting that Arnould “is now impatiently awaiting the end of the investigation.”
Arnould alleges that Depardieu, a friend of her father’s, raped her on two separate occasions in the summer of 2018, when she had visited his Parisian home to ask for advice. Arnould was 22 years old at the time, while Depardieu was 69. After various legal wrangling, including the actor’s failed attempt to get the case dismissed,...

The Paris Prosecutor’s Office has requested that actor Gérard Depardieu stand trial in a criminal court in relation to rape allegations by actress Charlotte Arnould, French media reported on Thursday.
The investigating judge must now make a decision on whether to endorse the request or not.
Arnould’s lawyer Carine Durrieu-Diebolt told French news network Bfmtv that the trial request marked a major breakthrough in the case for her client.
“For Charlotte Arnould, it’s an enormous step forward in the direction of a trial. She is now impatiently waiting for the end of the investigation,” she said.
Depardieu is already facing trial this October on separate charges of sexual assault against two women on the set of the film The Green Shutters in 2021.
The fresh trial request is related to allegations of two counts of rape lodged in a police complaint by Arnould in August 2018.

It’s nearly been a year since Kevin Spacey was acquitted of all nine sexual offense charges in a U.K. criminal trial, and the two-time Oscar winner has publicly admitted that his career is still in the doldrums.
The two solitary projects of his that have released in the last 12 months — “Control” and “Peter Five Eight,” both low-budget indie features and far removed from the starry features he was leading before his glittering four-decade career imploded when allegations first emerged in 2017 — landed without much noise. In a tearful interview on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” in June, he claimed that he owed so “many millions” of dollars in legal fees that his house in the U.S had been foreclosed and he’d almost had to file for bankruptcy several times.
But while he may still be the highest profile actor effectively “canceled” by mainstream Hollywood in the wake of the #MeToo movement,...

Striking the balance between harsh vibes and exceptional cinema, I’m pleased to announce our next program at the Roxy: The Film Stage has teamed with Chapo Trap House‘s Movie Mindset for Fidelio, a one-week, four-film program on the 1%’s malevolent influence, deep-state connections, and sexual corruption (fun edition).
It begins with Saturday, August 3’s double-bill of Abel Ferrara’s Welcome to New York and a 25th-anniversary presentation of Eyes Wide Shut on 35mm; the following week brings prints of Clint Eastwood’s delightfully absurd (or not?) potboiler Absolute Power and Roman Polanski’s late-career triumph The Ghost Writer. Each title has at least one encore, and in a couple cases represents first theatrical showings in recent history. Just remember the password.
The Film Stage readers and Chapo listeners receive a discounted $12 ticket with mention of our program at the Roxy’s box office. (Don’t be shy––their employees are very nice.

Kevin Spacey is to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Teatro Antico in Taormina, Sicily. The award is presented as part of the Nations Awards, organized by Michel Curatolo and Marco Fallanca in association with the Senate of the Italian Republic and the Region of Sicily. Previous recipients include Gerard Depardieu, Abel Ferrara and Claudia Cardinale.
The award comes as Spacey, who’s made more headlines about allegations of sexual assaults than his work in recent years, has attempted to reclaim his public profile and his career in recent months. He has given a number of high profile interviews and will appear, in the role of the devil, in an upcoming film “The Contact,” one of the few he has appeared in since a a series of men came forward with accusations against Spacey’s conduct. He also starred in an American film called “Peter Five Eight” which had a premiere in Philadelphia.

Kevin Spacey will be honored with the Nations Award for Lifetime Achievement at a special gala evening in the historic southern Italian town of Taormina in July.
The organizers said The Usual Suspects and American Beauty Oscar winner will also give a short on-stage performance at the event, taking place on July 21 in Taormina’s 4,000-seats Greek-roman Theatre.
The event, which is part of a program of cultural events running in the landmark ancient amphitheater across the summer, is not connected to the Taormina Film Festival, which runs from July 12 to 19.
The honor comes as Spacey continues to battle multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against him, which he has denied.
He was found not liable in a 2022 battery case brought by actor Anthony Rapp in the U.S., and not guilty in a UK trial in 2023, related to allegations by four men, but faces a fresh civil trial in the...

Dominique Boutonnat, the president of France’s National Film Board, the Cnc, has been found guilty on sexual assault charges and received a three-year sentence, two of which will be suspended.
Boutonnat has stepped down from the Cnc in the wake of Friday’s verdict and will be replaced by Olivier Henrard. Boutonnat is not expected to serve any jail time but will live under house arrest with an electronic bracelet for a year, French media reports. Boutonnat denied the allegations and is appealing the decision.
Boutonnat was indicted in 2021, accused of sexually assaulting his then-19-year-old godson in August 2020, during a vacation in Greece. Despite the allegations, Boutonnat, who has close ties with French President Emmanuel Macron, was reappointed as head of the national film board in 2022 and served most of his second term, which was to end next year. Last year, in bold defiance of post-pandemic doomsayers, French distributor Pathé doubled down on its commitment to the big-screen experience with its extravagant, no-expense-spared adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ “The Three Musketeers” — a starry two-part tentpole that featured dynamic single-take swashbuckling sequences and a delectably wicked turn from Eva Green. As theatrical events go, it was fun, if not especially faithful to the book, demonstrating that the French could rival the Americans in showmanship.
This year, by way of an encore, Pathé delivered a sweeping three-hour retelling of Dumas’ crowning achievement, “The Count of Monte Cristo,” at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Whereas “Megalopolis” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” swallowed up much of the oxygen at Cannes, “Count” premiered with far less fanfare but felt like a genuine triumph: a stunning, emotionally satisfying adventure tale, built on rock-solid source material. James Bond actress Léa Seydoux says French president Emanuel Macron’s statement in support of Gérard Depardieu gives “a very bad image for France.”
Depardieu will face a criminal trial later this year over charges of sexual assault of two women on a movie set in 2021. The 75-year-old actor has denied the allegations.
When the news was first reported, President Macron said his country is “proud” of the actor who is revered in his home nation. More recently, the French premier has said he is awaiting the trial before making any further judgement on the star.
In a weekend interview with The Times of London, Seydoux poured scorn on Macron’s statement, saying:
“So strange. It was crazy. It gives a very bad image of our country. Why say that? It was really something. It’s crazy he said that — the president. Crazy.”

In another sign that the #MeToo movement is transforming the birthplace of cinema, France’s film producers and actors unions on Friday unanimously approved new measures aimed at preventing gender-based and sexual violence and harassment within the industry.
Several French industry associations — including the union of independent producers, the association of independent producers, the union of cinema producers and the professional union of dramatic artists — approved an amendment to their collective agreement which will require mandatory harassment training for producers and enforce the protection of minors on film sets, among other measures.
The new measures follow an announcement by the French film board, the Cnc, that it will make similar requirements a condition for receiving government subsidies. Given the importance of Cnc funding for most French movies, this ensures these #MeToo measures will become standard practice across the French industry. The Cnc will launch harassment training programs this summer.

The Cannes Film Festival opened Tuesday with expectations that the big theme of this 77th edition will be #MeToo, even if rumors of an imminent bombshell exposé involving 10 prominent cinema figures were quashed overnight.
France’s #MeToo wave, sparked by actress and filmmaker Judith Godrèche’s decision to speak up about sexual abuse she says she suffered as a teenager and her subsequent campaign to end what she calls a culture of silence in the French film world, will be omnipresent.
Godrèche’s actions have encouraged thousands of sexual abuse victims across all walks of life to speak up about their experiences.
The actress and filmmaker will be in Cannes for the world premiere on Wednesday evening of her resulting short film Moi Aussi, gathering 1,000 people who got in touch with her via social media channels to tell their stories.

Thierry Fremaux addressed France’s #MeToo reckoning during a press conference on the eve of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Following rumors that the French outlet Mediapart is putting together a bombshell report to publish during Cannes with several new #MeToo allegations, there has been much speculation regarding how it will impact the festival.
Alluding to the massive backlash last year over the selection of Maiwenn’s Johnny Depp movie “Jeanne du Barry” on opening night, Fremaux suggested he and Cannes president Iris Knobloch ensured the 77th edition wouldn’t include any obvious red flags, and said the ongoing “polemics” had nothing to do with the festival.
“Last year, as you know, we had a few polemics, and we realized it, and so this year we decided to host a festival without polemics to make sure that the main interest for us all to be here is cinema,” Fremaux said.

French President Emmanuel Macron has clarified comments he made last year about Gérard Depardieu which seemed to suggest his support for the actor in the face of a tide of sexual assault accusations, which the latter has denied.
Speaking in an interview with French women’s magazine Elle, published on Wednesday, Macron suggested his comments had been misinterpreted and that he was not “complacent” about the issues around sexual harassment and abuse.
“I just want a respect for our principles, such as the presumption of innocence. These same principles which will allow justice to rule next October and that is a good thing.” he said.
Depardieu is due to be tried in October on charges of sexual assault on two women on a film set in 2021, while accusations of sexual assault and rape by actress Charlotte Arnould are also making their way through the courts.

The April 25 decision by the New York Court of Appeals to overturn Harvey Weinstein’s felony sex crime conviction looked like a major blow to the #MeToo movement in the U.S. and to the progress made within the U.S. film industry since 2017 (when the first allegations against Weinstein were made public).
In France, they are still waiting for that first wave of progress. The French Parliament has agreed to launch an inquiry into sexual and gender-based violence across the country’s film, audiovisual, performing arts, advertising and fashion sectors.
On Thursday, the Assemblée Nationale unveiled the launch of the inquiry following a speech made by French actress and director Judith Godrèche in February.
Godrèche has become a crucial figure in France’s #MeToo movement after she accused acclaimed directors Benoit Jacquot and Jacques Doillion of sexually assaulting her when she was a teenager. Both men have denied the claims.
She watched on, seemingly wiping away tears, as all 52 lawmakers present for the vote approved the commission on Thursday.

Gerard Depardieu will face criminal charges this fall stemming from accusations that he sexually assaulted two women on a set of the film The Green Shutters in 2021, The New York Times reports.
The trial will take place in October, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. The criminal charges were announced hours after Depardieu was detained for questioning by the police, who were investigating claims tied to separate allegations of sexual assault that occurred in 2021 and 2014.
Prosecutors neither identified Depardieu’s accusers, nor shared any details about the alleged incidents.

French actor Gérard Depardieu is being held in police custody in Paris for questioning over sexual assault claims. On Monday, Depardieu, 75, was detained by the 3rd Judicial District Police in France.
Known for the French films Le Monde and Green Card, Depardieu was accused of sexual assault by two women on the set of both films in 2014 and 2021. In January, Depardieu also had a separate sexual assault complaint dropped. The case was brought by actress Hélène Darras, who accused Depardieu of assaulting her in 2008 on the set of the film Disco.
In 2018, Depardieu was also charged with raping actress Charlotte Arnould. Due to lack of evidence, the case was closed in 2019. However, it reopened in the summer of 2020 on another charge of rape and sexual assault.
Depardieu’s history of alleged sexual assaults includes 13 other women who claimed Depardieu had acted inappropriately or harassed them. Darras was one of the 13 women.

Star Gérard Depardieu was taken into police custody in Paris this morning to be questioned over allegations of sexual assault. The 75-year-old actor, who has previously admitted to a troubled youth in which he associated with criminals, faces accusations by two separate women concerning incidents alleged to have taken place on the sets of films he made in 2014 and 2021.
The first of the new claims relates to an alleged incident on the set of The Green Shutters, which the accuser says was broken up only by his own bodyguards, while the second concerns his alleged behaviour towards an assistant working on The Magician And The Siamese. The police have yet to issue any further comment.
Four years ago, the actor was charged with the rape of then 22-year-old actor Charlotte Arnould in 2018. The case has not been brought to trial. Another claim of rape made by actor Hélène.

French actor Gérard Depardieu was taken into police custody today, Monday, April 29, in Paris, France, where he will face questioning over accusations of sexual assault. As reported by CNN, the prolific actor presented himself at a police station in Paris on Monday morning. He is being questioned regarding accusations of sexual assault by two women alleged to have taken place on film sets. This comes after French investigative news website Médiapart published a report in April 2023 detailing claims from 13 women of Depardieu’s alleged sexually inappropriate behavior. The accusations were linked to several films and TV series between 2004 and 2022 and included cases of groping, obscene comments, and inappropriate acts while on set. At the time, Depardieu’s lawyers said the Oscar-nominated actor denied any criminal behavior and also stated that the Médiapart report appeared to be based on “very subjective assessments and/or moral judgments.” In an open letter published last year,...

Known in France as a giant of modernist sculpture, to the rest of the world Camille Claudel is mainly remembered as Auguste Rodin’s lover.
Her tragic life, which included spending the last decades of her life in an asylum, has been immortalized on film by Isabelle Adjani opposite Gerard Depardieu in 1988’s Camille Claudel, and again by Juliette Binoche in 2013’s Camille Claudel 1915. A student, model, muse and lover to Rodin who blossomed into his rival, she produced artwork every bit as radical and expressive as his. And now — on view at the Getty through July 21 — is the first North American show in more than 30 years focusing solely on her work, including roughly 60 pieces.
The star of the show (seen first in the U.S. at the Art Institute of Chicago) is The Mature Age along with several iterations of her signature piece, The Waltz. Portraits in bronze or marble are plentiful too,...

Six months after world-premiering to poor reviews at the Venice Film Festival, Roman Polanski’s latest film “The Palace” has been acquired by a French distribution company, Swashbuckler Films.
The Paris-based banner, which specializes in classic movies, is hoping to release “The Palace” on May 15. The company’s owner, Sebastien Tiveyrat, told Variety he hasn’t yet obtained the exhibition visa from the National Film Board and hasn’t started contacting exhibitors in France to book theaters.
Although Polanski’s inclusion at the Venice festival sparked a controversy due to the fact that he’s still currently facing sexual assault allegations, “The Palace” sold across many territories, including Germany, Russia, Hungary, Estonia, Bulgaria and French-speaking Switzerland where it came out between September and January. The black comedy will next open in Portugal on April 4. Goodfellas handles international sales on the movie.

Last year, Australian filmmaker Peter Weir was given an honorary Oscar for having “illuminated the human experience with his unique and expansive body of work.” Sadly, it’s now official that his filmography is complete, as Weir confirmed during an appearance at the Festival de la Cinémathèque in Paris that he has retired from directing.
Télérama reported (and IndieWire was kind enough to translate their report) that Weir was asked why 14 years have gone by since his last movie. Weir replied, “I am retired. Why did I stop cinema? Because, quite simply, I have no more energy.“
Born in 1944, Weir got his career started in television back in the 1960s, working on the TV projects The Life and Times of the Reverend Buck Shotte and Man on a Green Bike. After contributing a segment to the anthology film Three to Go, he made the 50 minute movie Homesdale and the documentary Whatever Happened to Green Valley?...

Peter Weir has directed some of the most acclaimed blockbusters of the last half century, often straddling the line between art and commerce with studio hits like “The Truman Show” and “Dead Poets Society.” But while the Australian director has not made a movie since the 2010 drama “The Way Back,” fans have held out hope that Weir might find his way back into the director’s chair — perhaps on the “Master and Commander” sequel that Russell Crowe has openly lobbied to make. But it now appears that Weir has officially walked away from filmmaking for good.
Appearing at the Festival de la Cinémathèque in Paris (via Télérama), Weir gave a blunt update on his filmmaking career that should squash any hopes that the 79-year-old director has another movie in him.

This time last year, Katja Cahill was taking a break pre-Oscars to visit “Banshees of Inisherin” breakout Jenny the Miniature Donkey — and her date (!!) — in a livestock trailer outside the Dolby.
“That was the best part of my Oscars, just getting to go hang out in the donkey trailer,” Cahill told IndieWire. “And donkeys have support donkeys too, so there were two donkeys there.” A frequent Oscars contributor, the costume designer crafted a glittering gold vest she described as a “blinged-out service animal jacket” for Jenny to wear on stage.
At the 96th Academy Awards, the self-professed animal lover once again brought her artistry to an attendee of a different species. Cahill dressed “Anatomy of a Fall” scene-stealer Messi the dog — who played Snoop for director Justine Triet’s Best Picture nominee and Best Original Screenplay winner (co-written with Arthur Harari) — in an oversized bow tie.

Jimmy Kimmel is back as the Academy Awards host for the fourth time, and his opening monologue at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday, March 10 left few in the Oscars audience unscathed.
Kimmel started his opening bit by roasting the Academy for the controversial snubs for “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie. “‘Barbie’ was a monster hit. What an achievement to take a plastic doll nobody even liked anymore. Before this movie, you had a better chance of getting my wife to buy our daughter a pack of Marlboro Reds than a Barbie doll. Now, Barbie’s a feminist icon thanks to Greta Gerwig, who many believed deserved to be nominated for Best Director. I know you’re clapping, but you’re the ones who didn’t vote for her, by the way. Jimmy Kimmel left his usual late-night beefs off the Oscar stage tonight, ignoring Trump, Santos, Aaron Rodgers to focus entirely on Hollywood’s big night, with only one not-so-veiled political jab included in a mostly gentle opening segment.

Exclusive: Judith Godrèche is burning down the house. Her hope is that something better will emerge from the ashes.
In recent weeks, the French actress and director, a three-time César nominee known for starring in English and French-language hits including The Man In The Iron Mask, The Spanish Apartment and Potiche, has taken a match to a culture of silence and denial within France’s cinema world when it comes to sexual abuse. In her first trade interview, she talks to Deadline about her experiences, the motivation behind her campaign and what she hopes to achieve.
At the heart of Godrèche’s mission is the relationship she had with director Benoît Jacquot in the late 1980s, which began when she was only 14 years old, and he was 39. The minimum age of consent in France is 15.
Godrèche, now 51, lived with Jacquot for six years and appeared in his films The Beggars and The Disenchanted,...

Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind docuseries “The Staircase,” has once again struck a chord with “Samber,” a limited series about a French serial rapist that explores the damages of sexual violence against women and children.
“Samber,” a six-part thriller series directed by de Lestrade, charts the true case of Dino Scala, a seemingly ordinary family man who sexually assaulted and raped more than 50 women and minors over three decades in Northeastern France. In spite of several victims filing complaints, Scala was able to slip through the cracks of France’s judicial system and benefited from a complacent stance toward sexual abuses. He was eventually arrested in February 2018 and found guilty of 17 rapes, 12 attempted rapes and 27 sexual assaults or attempts. In June 2022, Scala was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Represented in international markets by Federation Studios, the six-part series has captured the zeitgeist in France, which is undergoing a...

Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall won Best Film and Best Director at the 49th edition of the French César awards Friday.
Triet is only the second women to clinch the Best Director prize in the near 50-year history of the César Awards, after Tonie Marshall for Venus Beauty in 1976.
The director took to the stage with her producers Marie-Ange Luciani at Les Films de Pierre and David Thion at Les Films Pelléas.
Luciani suggested the Best Film honor, which is voted on by the some 4,600 members of the César Academy, was a sign of solidarity for the film and Triet in the light of her controversial Cannes d’Or acceptance speech which provoked a political backlash after she criticized the attitude of Emmanuel Macron’s government towards culture and cinema.
