Toward the end of “The Honorable Shyne,” the flawed yet redeeming Andscape documentary that premiered on Hulu Monday, Moses Barrow — the current leader of the opposition in Belize’s House of Representatives and one-time Diddy protege known as Shyne — ruminates on the life of…sea turtles. By this point in the film, the director Marcus A. Clarke has highlighted the Belizean ocean coast as a transformative place for the protagonist.

Water as a symbol of rebirth is a well-worn trope yet it works because of the poignancy Barrow imbues into the scene. He posits that the reptiles can only grow into the swimmers they’re intended to become if they’re left to their own devices while on land. The turtles’ struggle to reach the water ultimately strengthens their muscles. “The design of life is evolution,” Barrow remarks. “To mold you, shape you.”

In other words, it’s the journey not the destination.

If you had any doubt that the awards season was in full swing, Sunday night’s 15th Annual Governors Awards ceremony answered it.

If you are, or in any way think you might have a shot at an Oscar nomination this year, and were in Los Angeles, it is most likely I might have run into you last night at Ovation’s Ray Dolby Ballroom where this jam packed ceremony saluting this year’s honorary Oscar recipients took place. In fact, just the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ PR team’s tip sheet was two pages of 207 single spaced names who were expected to attend (and by my count did) show up, not just to honor the deserving winners of the evening, but also perhaps to be in this place which is packed with Oscar voters who might be reminded to see your movie, if they haven’t done so already.

That’s how Governors Award recipient writer/director Richard Curtis jokingly described the Governors Awards — or at least, how he overheard his son describing it to son’s girlfriend.

In truth, the awards are bestowed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on a select group of industry standouts, whose career achievements merit singular recognition. Along with Curtis, who received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (given to someone who has brought credit to the industry by promoting human welfare), this year’s honorees, as voted on by AMPAS’s Board of Governors, were Quincy Jones, Juliet Taylor, and producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

Screenwriter and director Richard Curtis receives the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award while James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are recognized with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.

Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Jennifer Lopez, Andrew Garfield, Jennifer Lawrence (and her baby bump), Selena Gomez, Danielle Deadwyler, Kevin Costner, Mikey Madison, Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Sharon Stone were among the stars who turned out for the Motion Picture Academy’s second-biggest night of the year.

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, 20th Century Studios has won rights to Test Drive, an original action spec from Matt Venne, to be produced by Safehouse Pictures.

While plot details are under wraps, sources said Venne secured a healthy mid-six against seven figure deal for his script. The spec had no talent or director attachments and caused a stir on the back of its concept and writing alone, in a scenario not too commonly seen these days.

In a sparkling pink cape and dress, Dion performed her famous hits, “The Power of Love” and “I’m Alive” at the 1001 Seasons of Elie Saab fashion show in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The show marked the 45th anniversary of the Lebanese designer’s fashion career. The 1001 Seasons of Elie Laub show also saw performances from Jennifer Lopez, Camila Cabello, Nancy Arjam and Amr Diab.

Dion’s first performance since her diagnosis with Stiff Person Syndrome in 2022 saw her sing at the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony in July. Dion was reportedly paid $2 million for her song at the Olympics.

The story gained fuel after a Washington Examiner story that cited campaign finance records showing that Oprah Winfrey’s production company, Harpo Productions, was paid a total of $1 million for event production.

There’s a reason that the payment was made: Campaign finance law.

Federal Election Commission rules require campaigns to pay the fair market value for the ancillary costs of holding events — everything from staging to the band to food and drink.

Lina Esco, the actor best known for “S.W.A.T.” and “Kingdom,” has joined the cast of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s new film “Rip.”

Joe Carnahan is directing the action thriller for Netflix. “Rip” follows a team of Miami cops whose trust begins to fray when they discover millions in a derelict stash house. The official logline teases: “As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything for the team is called into question — including who they can rely on.”

Netflix declined to comment on Esco’s casting.

Along with Damon and Affleck, the cast includes Sasha Calle, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins (“John Wick: Chapter 4”) and Nestor Carbonell.

In “Rip,” Esco will be playing a character named Captain Jackie Velez. The actor starred on “S.W.A.T.” for five seasons between 2017 and 2022, portraying Officer Christina “Chris” Alonso. She also directed the women’s empowerment film “Free the Nipple.

Following the inaccurate reporting and speculation that Oprah Winfrey was personally paid by the Kamala Harris campaign to participate in the “Unite for America” livestream rally in September, Winfrey has once again confirmed that the $1 million spent by the campaign went directly to Harpo Prods.’ production fees.

Harpo, after all, required the fees for pre-production, field shoot production and logistics, as well as post-production costs. The event, held on Sept. 19, was a massive event featuring a chat between Winfrey and Harris, as well as virtual appearances by stars including Jennifer Lopez, Meryl Streep, Chris Rock and Julia Roberts.
