A conservative and a faith-based film landed at nos. 4 and 10 at the domestic box office this weekend, with a solid showing for anime Dan Dan Dan: First Encounter and a nice limited opening for My Old Ass.
Am I Racist?, the first theatrical release from Jeremy Boreing and Ben Shapiro’s The Daily Wire, had a phenomenal opening weekend grossing $4.75 million on 1,517 screens for the no. 4 spot at the domestic box office and one of the top documentary bows of the past decade.

“God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust” (Fathom) and “Am I Racist?” (Sdg) won’t register with most mainstream moviegoers, but this weekend they could rank as high as #3 and #4 (in either order), behind “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) and the debuting “Speak No Evil” (Universal). Also in the mix are Lionsgate’s new “The Killer’s Game” and the 8th weekend of “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
Of these, guess which two are top candidates for receiving the rare A+ Cinemascore.
There’s a history of lucrative performances for similar films that appeal to conservative faith-based or Maga-related audiences (which frequently overlap). The progressive side has its analogs, particularly in Michael Moore documentaries, but for the last decade or more nearly all the preach-to-the-choir breakthroughs come from the right wing of the ideological spectrum.

Pinnacle Peak Pictures is bringing a slate of faith-based films to the Cannes market, including a new installment in the “God’s Not Dead” franchise.
Entitled “God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust,” the film will be released theatrically in the U.S. this fall, but, like the rest of Pinnacle’s slate, foreign territories are available to buyers. The new “God’s Not Dead” film follows the series’ protagonist, Rev. David Hill (played once again by David A.R. White), who, with the help of a skilled political strategist, runs for political office on a platform of preserving “religious freedom” and healing divisions. The cast also includes Dean Cain, who appeared in the first film in the franchise and is best known for “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” as well as Isaiah Washington (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and Ray Wise (“X-Men: First Class”).

George Clooney has been in the movie business for over a few years. Through his lengthy career, he has experienced the entire spectrum of success. He has had some massive box-office hits and has been a part of high-profile bombs. The most well-known blunder of his career has to be his 1997 film, Batman and Robin.
George Clooney as Batman
There were many reasons why the movie failed. Its inability to take on a serious tone, the joke-like appearances of beloved characters, and its writing, were just a few reasons why the movie was completely shredded by critics. It is safe to assume that after this very public failure, Clooney needed a break and needed to work on a good film.
That was when Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight entered the picture. It would seem that the atmosphere this movie provided was exactly what Clooney needed after the DC film’s failure.

A small piece of contemporary cinema history was written last night in St Andrews, Scotland when Steven Soderbergh sat down with Joe and Anthony Russo on stage at the Sands International Film Festival to discuss their 2002 collaboration Welcome to Collinwood.
Produced by Soderbergh and George Clooney who also stars alongside William H. Macy, Isaiah Washington, Sam Rockwell, Luis Guzmán, and Patricia Clarkson, Welcome to Collinwood was the second feature from the Russos following their debut feature Pieces, which bombed out of Slamdance in 1997.
“There was zero interest in the film from anybody but this man over here,” Anthony said of Pieces, pointing towards Soderbergh. The sex, lies and videotape filmmaker had been present at the doomed Pieces screening at Slamdance and reached out to the directing duo to impart some wisdom.
“It was insanely ambitious and dense,” Soderbergh told Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr, who moderated the talk, of Pieces.

Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy, TV’s longest-running primetime medical drama, is quickly approaching. If past premiere episodes are anything to go by, season 20’s first installment “We’ve Only Just Begun” is going to feature an abundance of drama to set up the rest of the season.
The series first premiered back in 2005 and follows the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial, who are constantly faced with life-or death decisions. Over the years, we’ve seen fan favorite characters come and go, new ones join the ensemble, and many devastating character deaths. So picking the 10 most dramatic season premieres was not only a difficult task, but a real emotional rollercoaster.

Denny’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) death leaves Izzie ( Katherine Heigl) all “dark and twisty” and her friends at a loss of what to do to help her.

Grey’s Anatomy alum Isaiah Washington is done acting — unless he raises $5 million on GoFundMe, apparently. The 59-year-old, who played Dr. Preston Burke for the ABC drama’s first three seasons before getting fired from the series, announced his retirement in a February 28 tweet. “It is with a heavy heart and a sense of relief that I am announcing my early retirement from the entertainment industry today,” he wrote. “Those who have been following/witnessing my journey here on [Twitter] since 2011 all know that I have fought the good fight, but it seems that the haters, provocateurs, and the useful idiots have won.” Washington went on: “I’m no longer interested in the back and forth regarding a ‘color construct’ that keeps us human beings divided, nor am I interested in politics or anything vitriolic. I will be traveling this great country before it falls into socialism and then communism.

Washington was fired from the show in June 2007 after using a gay slur against co-star Tr Knight.

Since Grey’s Anatomy first premiered in 2005, it has aired 19 seasons, 406 episodes, and birthed 3 spinoffs. Naturally the show has had to adapt as cast members come and go throughout the years. This sometimes makes it hard to recall what exactly went on in season 1. Although who can forget Addison Montgomery (then Shepherd) saying the iconic line, “I’m Addison Shepherd … and you must be the woman who’s been screwing my husband.”
With every new intern class that Grey’s introduces viewers to, it always throws in a few Easter eggs to remind fans what made them fall in love with the show in the first place. The race pits them both against formidable opponents from their past, each with plans to inexorably remove religion’s influence on public policy. Set against a backdrop of unprecedented political, civil and spiritual unrest, Dave struggles to answer an increasingly relevant question of our time: Is God dead in American politics?...

Like so many indie filmmakers of the late 20th century, Ayoka Chenzira is not as well-known as she should be, nor has she made as many films as her talent warrants. But the ones she’s made remain impactful.
Her short “Hair Piece: A Film for Nappyheaded People” is celebrated as a first from a Black woman animator, and its focus on Black hair remains as timely as ever. And now “Alma’s Rainbow,” her 1994 feature-film debut centered on Black womanhood, returns to US theaters in a new 4K restoration.
Written, directed and produced by Chenzira — who has gone on to guide a new generation of filmmakers and new-media creators at Spelman for more than 20 years — “Alma’s Rainbow” captures the dynamic between mother and daughter during a pivotal turning point in the younger woman’s life. Like Leslie Harris’s debut feature, 1992’ “Just Another Girl on the I.R.T.,” “Alma’s Rainbow” is...

Through 18 seasons of Grey's Anatomy, there have been plenty of changes.
Some of the biggest changes come from the cast, as any show that has been on as long as Grey's has surely seen plenty of cast exits.
Luckily, the cast that departed early in the series (or even more recently) can still be seen in other projects. So where are they now?
Isaiah Washington -- Dr. Preston Burke
Isaiah Washington portrayed Dr. Preston Burke for the first three seasons of Grey's Anatomy.
Washington also returned as a guest on Grey's Anatomy Season 10 after Cristina left Grey Sloan.
Since leaving Seattle Grace, the actor has remained steady in both TV and film, having been in the main cast of The 100 through The 100 Season 5.
He's also appeared in shows such as Blue Bloods, Bull, Law & Order: LA, and was recurring during Survivor's Remorse Season 4.

A series revolving around a down and dirty strip club in the Mississippi Delta isn’t standard hit TV show fare. But Tony-nominated and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Katori Hall didn’t branch out from the stage to television to play by the rules. When her edgy TV series “P-Valley” debuted on Starz two years ago, circumstances were not ideal. The world was battling Covid plus social protests prompted by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery were erupting all over the nation. In Season 2, those real-world events figure prominently as the show deftly avoids a sophomore slump and rises to its occasion.
Although ostensibly about mysterious stranger Hailey/Autumn Knight (British actress Elarica Johnson) arriving in the small fictional town of Chucalissa and making ends meet as a stripper, it’s “P-Valley’s” initial surrounding players who catapulted the show to cult status. Nonbinary female-presenting Uncle...

An under-appreciated diamond in the rough which arrived during an explosion of Black indie cinema in the 1990s, love jones, the directorial debut of Theodore Witcher, remains a distinctive time capsule, as well as being the director’s sole offering to date. Starring budding luminaries such as Larenz Tate, Nia Long and Isaiah Washington, the power of Witcher’s film lies in its intelligence and simplicity—a well-written, beautifully presented snap shot of 1990s Chicago and the inherent difficulties of navigating relationships in an ambivalent cityscape.
Like a precursor to the romantic entanglements further compromised by the arrival of social media and online dating, Witcher’s film plays like a nostalgic portrait in many ways, in how we appreciated and consumed culture, where young adults were forced to be wiser than their years, and when technological deficits contributed to miscommunication.…...

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy have seen several instances of backstage controversy almost as powerful as the show’s well-known onscreen action. Just last month, they had to brace for more, as the ABC medical drama got some bad press when one of the series’ writers came under fire for alleged dishonesty. Of course, Grey’s has had far bigger scandals in its 18-season history. Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke) was fired after an on-set altercation, Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens) had a very public falling out with Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes, and Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey (Derek Shepherd) famously caused “Hr issues,” in the words of one former producer. Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) even claimed the work environment at Grey’s used to be “really toxic.” Those moments lead our “greatest hits” to the rep of a show with its share of unwanted headlines. Isaiah Washington drops the F-word Washington was fired...

Isaiah Washington is speaking out about his co-stars on Grey's Anatomy.
The actor, who was fired from the ABC primetime drama in 2007, took to social media to air his thoughts on co-stars Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey.
Washington responded to a fan on Twitter who said that Patrick was fired for being late to the set.
“You actually believe that’s why his contract wasn’t renewed? @PatrickDempsey needed cover," Washington began in his response.
"Ntm it’s insanely aggro to yell at cast members after repeatedly being late when ur literally not in charge. @PatrickDempsey is a raging narcissist!”
He closed off the tweet with the hashtag "#PrivlegeViolation."
Washington was let go from the series following its third season following claims he outed co-star T.R. Knight.
Isaiah also recently took to social media to call Pompeo "disrespectful and disgusting."
“I only had maybe 7 scenes with @EllenPompeo for the 3 years I was on the show.

Shonda Rhimes knows what she wishes the legacy of “Grey’s Anatomy” would be.
“The number of women who have become doctors because of that show is magical to me,” she says, sounding pleased during a recent interview for Variety’s Show Woman of the Year issue. “The number of people who’ve come to me and told me that they learned how to do CPR, or figured out that they were having a heart attack because of that show, is magical to me.”
But she’s realistic about what it likely is.
“Sadly, I think the legacy might simply just be that we made it possible for more people of color to have jobs on camera on television,” Rhimes says, “which makes me embarrassed for television.”
“Grey’s Anatomy,” which premiered on ABC in 2005, was Rhimes’ first television show — and yes, even she is surprised that it began its 18th season this fall.

Their time on Grey's Anatomy may be long over, but Isaiah Washington and Katherine Heigl's drama is still resurfacing. In November, the actor took to Twitter with a message directed at his former co-star. "This woman once proclaimed that I should 'never' be allowed to speak publicly again," he wrote alongside with a photo of Heigl. "The world agreed with her proclamation back then and protested for my job and my head in 65 languages. I wish I was on Twitter in 2007, because I will Never stop exercising my free speech." While it's not entirely unclear what led Washington to share now, it's no secret the two have bad blood. In fact, back in 2007, Heigl called him...

The award-winning playwright (“The Mountaintop”) Katori Hall spent six years research and writing “Pussy Valley,” which revolves around the lives and loves of the employees of a strip club The Pynk in the fictional city of Chacalissa, Mississippi. But when she saw the premiere at the Mixed Blood Theatre in 2015, she realized “Pussy Valley” didn’t work as a play. It needed to be a TV series.
“P-Valley” premiered on Starz last July to rave reviews and was renewed for a second season within weeks of its debut. The series has garnered one Image Award and 11 more nominations including the Gotham Independent Film Award for best breakthrough series-longform. And the series is garnering strong Emmy buzz in the drama categories.
In a recent Deadline Zoom conversation, Hall acknowledged that the 3 ½ hour play just had too much going on. “It was in the wrong package,” she noted, realizing “it’s supposed...

The revolving door at Grey's Anatomy continues to spin.
Jesse Williams is exiting the beloved ABC medical drama after 12 years in the role of Jackson Avery.
The actor who first appeared on Grey's Anatomy Season 6 will exit on Grey's Anatomy Season 17 Episode 15, set to air May 20, according to Deadline.
No details have been given on how Jackson's final arc will play out, but we're inclined to believe he will survive his final episode.
The series wouldn't announce the exit this soon if something bad was going to happen to him.
“Jesse brings so much heart, such depth of care, and so much intelligence to his work,” Grey’s showrunner Krista Vernoff said in a statement to Deadline.
“We will miss Jesse terribly and we will miss Jackson Avery — played to perfection for so many years.”
“I will forever be grateful for the boundless opportunities provided me by Shonda [Rhimes], the network,...

The Mississippi Delta is the fictional home of “P-Valley,” a visually-stunning new drama series that debuted this past summer on Starz. Series creator Katori Hall recently joined our Gold Derby Meet the Experts TV Showrunners panel to discuss the origins of the program (watch the exclusive video interview above). And part of my coming-of-age experience was going to strip clubs, and so I saw these women as superheroes and as athletes. I wanted to lift this veil on this world that a lot of people didn’t really know deeply about.”

When Krista Vernoff read the script of the “Grey’s Anatomy” pilot in 2004, she was coming off the “most difficult job” of her TV career, writing on “Wonderfalls.” In an interview for Variety’s cover story about “Grey’s Anatomy” for the magazine’s Power of Women issue, Vernoff said of the quirky Fox dramedy: “I just kept getting rewritten systematically. Fighting 4 One America — A prominent group of African American actors and entertainers have accepted President Donald J. Trump’s invitation to visit the White House in December to work together on important issues facing the Black Community.
In a late-night night phone call with the President Saturday night, rappers Eric B. and Money-b, actor Isaiah Washington, who are among the stars in Trump vs. Hollywood, and film director Daphne Barak, all agreed to continue their discussion of economic opportunity, criminal justice reform and the President’s groundbreaking “Platinum Plan” to deliver greater opportunity, security, prosperity and fairness to their communities.

She might change her mind; she certainly has before. But midway through an interview, Ellen Pompeo casually drops the bomb that after more than 360 episodes, the upcoming 17th season of “Grey’s Anatomy” may be its last.

Vinegar Syndrome is once again doing the dark lord’s work with their releases of Pandemonium and The Caller, and Severin Films is showing some love to both Cruel Jaws and Massacre in Dinosaur Valley, too.
Scream Factory has put together a brand new collector’s edition Blu-ray for Ghost Ship that arrives this week, and if you’re someone who digs on “banana pants” cinematic experiences, you’ll definitely want to pick up Agfa’s Blu-ray for Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things.

After numerous delays, Well Go USA’s Cut Throat City is finally making its debut — and in theaters. Yes, you heard that right. The RZA-directed crime drama will make its way into select theaters starting today as they slowly start to open their doors across the country.
“Well Go is a supporter of the traditional theatrical window and when we initially read the script a couple years ago we truly envisioned Cut Throat City as a wide theatrical release,” said Doris Pfardrescher, President & CEO, Well Go USA. “It is a socially relevant film that we feel needs to be seen on the big screen. We also want to help support the cinemas as best we can in bringing life back to their business.”
She added, “Obviously, safety is an important part of reopening but we do feel that the cinemas are taking every precaution to make us all and the environment feel safe.
