The 2024 edition of Filmfest Hamburg was the biggest in the German festival’s 32-year history, posting approximately 59,000 admissions to screenings, up from last year’s record-breaking total of 52,700.
This included the preceding open-air Binnenalster Filmfest, which ran from September 19-22.
The 10 days of the festival closed with the gala screening of Pedro Almodovar’s The Room Next Door on October 5.
“So many of my dreams for this first year have come true. It feels truly magical,” said festival director Malika Rabahallah. “It was overwhelming to see so many renowned directors, actors, and filmmakers in Hamburg, all enjoying the special festival atmosphere with us.

Michael Steiner’s high-octane thriller Early Birds is gearing up for its Northern UK premiere at Grimmfest on 6th October, bringing a gritty dose of neo-noir to Manchester audiences. The film, set against the backdrop of Zurich’s underbelly, centres on two women—Annika, a Serbian-born single mother and petty thief, and Caro, a Turkish-Albanian call girl—who find themselves on the run after a wild night out leads to a violent and unexpected turn of events.
Early Birds begins in the chaotic aftermath of a party, as Annika (played by Nilam Farooq) and Caro (Silvana Synovia) discover themselves in possession of a mysterious package that everyone seems to want. From corrupt police officers to ruthless drug dealers, there’s no shortage of dangerous figures trailing them, forcing the unlikely duo to form a fragile alliance. As they navigate the city’s shadowy streets, the film delivers a fast-paced, tension-filled tale of survival,...

Money can buy outside help, opportunity and material possessions, but not happiness in “My Wonderful Wanda,” a punchy satire from Swiss auteur Bettina Oberli (“Late Bloomers”). Taking a wry but empathetic approach to the phenomenon of care migration, Oberli and her co-writer Cooky Ziesche focus on the changing relationship between one privileged Swiss family and their financially fragile Polish home-care worker over nine months. Naturalistically shot and structured as three chapters and an epilogue, it’s an engaging, mostly well-acted tale, full of surprising twists, even if some seem a bit too on the nose. Opening in theaters and virtual cinemas on April 23, this Zeitgeist Films release should segue from international film festival favorite to modest art-house hit.
Attractive, capable, 30-something single mother Wanda arrives in Switzerland on a bus packed with Polish women who work for rich families eager to outsource the mundane tasks of everyday life. Like Wanda,...

"It's a proof of love." Zeitgeist Films has released a new official US trailer for a Swiss indie drama titled My Wonderful Wanda, which was initially part of the Tribeca Film Festival line-up earlier this year (before it was cancelled). The film is the latest from Swiss filmmaker Bettina Oberli, and is still seeking international distribution. Agnieszka Grochowska stars as the titular Wanda, a Polish immigrant working as a carer in Switzerland. She works as a nurse for the aging patriarch of the wealthy Wegmeister-Gloor family. When she surprisingly becomes pregnant, family secrets come to light and arrangements are soon made to try and appease everyone in this biting family drama. Sounds like a more serious Swiss version of Knives Out. Also starring Gottfried Breitfuss, André Jung, Marthe Keller, Birgit Minichmayr, Bruno Rajski, Iwo Rajski, & Anatole Taubman. This looks like a very complex, poignant drama about family and honesty. Here's...

With the recent #MeToo movement it should have been expected that there would soon be several movies based on the topic. And in the horror genre ‘rape revenge’ has been a popular sub genre since I Spit On Your Grave and perhaps hitting its peak recently with Revenge. That said, there will of course be many movies tackling the subject and 3 Lives is one of the most recent.
But 3 Lives tackles things in a slightly different way as the sexual abuse has happened well before our story starts and lead character Emma has now been abducted but is soon saved and on the run with the person who was jailed for attacking her fifteen years earlier. It’s, at least on the face of things,...

Review by Peter BelsitoThe film is a deeply felt yet unsentimental, often wry look at a group of Jewish friends — all Nazi-era survivors — who, in 1946 Frankfurt, unite to sell high-end linens to raise the funds to emigrate to America. Not your typical Holocaust-inspired drama.
These clever door-to-door peddlers, led by David Bermann (a superb Moritz Bleibtreu), whose family’s once-thriving linen store was seized by the Nazis and now stands in ruins provide an interesting context in which the filmmakers build an interesting deeply felt story.
David is suspected of collaboration with the Nazis and is questioned by tough, cold and very attractive American Army investigator, Sara (Antje Traue), who suggeststhat David, whose parents and brothers perished at Auschwitz, may have been working with the Nazis.
These interrogation sessions give way to flashbacks of how the jokey David, while imprisoned in a concentration camp, was plucked by its loathsome...

Out today, Baran bo Odar’s German supernatural crime thriller will lure you into its web of family trauma and chilling town secrets...
“This is Winden. Nothing ever happens here”, says Ulrich (Oliver Masucci), a family man who can occasionally be found climbing out the bedroom window of a recent widow after a spot of ‘breakfast’. It might sound like your classic horror-thriller set-up: the small sleepy town hit by a sudden tragedy, but it’s clear from the off-set that despite the very recent disappearance of a young school boy things run much deeper than this. Winden may appear to be a quiet town where nothing happens, but the town’s older residents know something. There is hushed talk of events that happened 33 years ago and the haunted looks on parents’ faces betray a fear that seems to say 'you don’t know the half of it'.

I not going to hide the fact I’m a huge Transporter fan, from the very first movie to the more recent, if little seen here in the UK, TV show, I’ve enjoyed [to various extents] each and every entry in the franchise. So, unlike some out there, I was not afraid to see the film series rebooted with a new star and a new story. And that’s what we get with The Transporter Refueled. My only worry was that no-one connected to the original films, apart from Luc Besson, had any part of this film… But then that was also the case with the series, and I really enjoyed that!

EuropaCorp USA released their new action movie, "The Transporter Refueled," into theaters today, September 4th, 2015, and all the top, major movie critics have turned in their reviews. It turns out that it didn't quite resonate too good with most of them, getting just an overall 31 score out of a possible 100 across 18 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Anatole Taubman, Ed Skrein, Gabriella Wright, Lenn Kudrjawizki, Loan Chabanol, Radivoje Bukvic, Ray Stevenson and Tatiana Pajkovic. We've provided blurbs from a few of the critics, below. Kyle Anderson from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 67 grade. He stated: "It’s hard to deny the hedonistic joy in the way Delamarre plays with his various toys, and the goofball stunts—including the yacht-based finale, with a special appearance by a jet ski—are generally worth wandering through the dialogue desert." Andrew Barker over at Variety, gave it a 60 grade. He said:...

Frank Martin (played by newcomer Ed Skrein), a former special-ops mercenary, is now living a less perilous life – or so he thinks – transporting classified packages for questionable people. When Frank’s father (Ray Stevenson) pays him a visit in the south of France, their father-son bonding weekend takes a turn for the worse when Frank is engaged by a cunning femme-fatale, Anna (Loan Chabanol), and her three seductive sidekicks to orchestrate the bank heist of the century.

For many, Jason Statham’s hard-boiled Frank Martin is The Transporter, given that the British hard man injected the cult action series with a tenacity that saved it from mediocrity. Now that The Stath has moved on to pastures anew, there are a lot of understandable concerns looming over Camille Delamarre’s (Brick Mansions) reboot effort, though the latest trailer and action-packed clip are an effective one-two punch that prove that, above anything, The Transporter Refueled will retain the franchise’s boisterous action sensibilities.
Supplanting Statham in the lead role is newcomer Ed Skrein, who plays a slightly different version of Frank Martin. While enjoying a holiday with his old man in southern France, Frank’s idyllic downtime is unceremoniously upended by a femme fatale and her group of highly-trained, seductive associates, who together convince our protagonist to orchestrate one of the ambitious bank heists in history.

A new trailer for the upcoming reboot of the Transporter franchise, The Transporter Refueled, has been released. I'm not sure if Jason Statham said "No" to another film (that seems unlikely) or if Europacorp was merely interested in saving a little money on their leading man, but this time around it's Ed Skrein (Daario Naharis on "Game of Thrones") in the leading role and Brick Mansions helmer, Camille Delamarre, directing. They haven't changed the name of the lead character as Skrein will be playing Frank Martin, hired by Anna (Loan Chabanol) and her three sidekicks, only to realize he's been played. Anna and her cohorts have kidnapped Frank's father (Ray Stevenson) in order to coerce Frank into helping them take down a ruthless group of Russian human traffickers. Additional members of the cast include Lenn Kudrjawizki, Radivoje Bukvic, Gabriella Wright and Anatole Taubman The Transporter Refueled will release in theaters on Sept.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Europa Corp. and 20th Century Fox would have called time on The Transporter series following the departure of hardboiled action veteran Jason Statham, but low and behold, seven years after the previous installment, an all-new trilogy beckons.
It’s one that will rev into action later this year with The Transporter Refueled, which ushers franchise newcomer Ed Skrein into the title role. Best known for his work on The Tunnel and Ill Manors, along with a part in next year’s Deadpool, the actor will get behind the wheel for Camille Delamarre’s soft reboot – one which seemingly retains the globe-trotting heist action from the original trilogy.
Mind you, The Stath brought a considerable amount of gravitas to the role of Frank Martin, lending a palpable sense of charm to an otherwise generic set-up. It’s understood Refueled will kick Statham’s character to the kerb,...

Welcome to "The Transporter Refueled." (Sheesh). Anyway, Ed Skrein is now behind the wheel, tasked as they guy who can deliver dangerous or illegal packages with ease on four wheels. But things get hairy when he's hired by a trio of femme fatales to assist in a massive bank heist, which soon sees him tangling with Russian mobsters. And there's a father/son story in here too, because I guess we need character development or something. EuropaCorp has pushed back the U.S. release of "The Transporter Refueled" by two and a half months.
Originally slated for June 19th, the film will now open on the Labor Day holiday weekend of September 4th. The early Fall bow is more in line with the three previous films which also came out during that season.
Part of the reason for the delay is that it means the cast can give the film a bigger promotional push, something seen as quite necessary as it's hoped this will be the start of a new trilogy.
Ed Skrein, Loan Chabanol, Radivoje Bukvic, Gabriella Wright, Anatole Taubman and Tatiana Pajkovic star in the Camille Delamarre-directed film.

It’s only been six years since the original Transporter trilogy came to a close, but now, Luc Besson’s production outfit is reviving the franchise’s still-twitching corpse.
The Transporter Refueled (previously dubbed Legacy) is a cunning title that points toward its rebooty-ness. The film stars Game Of Thrones‘ Ed Skrein as another incredibly skilled transporter. If you hadn’t already guessed; Jason Statham isn’t back in the saddle, but his replacement is more than capable of steering this latest offering.

We all complain about reboots and remakes, but when Hollywood decides that now is the time to reboot The Transporter franchise, you can’t help but bring out the clichéd “They’re running out of new ideas!” argument.
Jason Statham won’t be back, and replacing him is sorta-lookalike Ed Skrein, an actor you may remember (albeit with a bit more hair) as playing Daario Naharis in season three of Game of Thrones. The cast is rounded out by Ray Stevenson, Radivoje Bukvic, Gabriella Wright, Anatole Taubman and Tatiana Pajkovic.
Bill Collage and Adam Cooper (Accepted and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie) penned the screenplay and Camille Delamarre directs. The Transporter Legacy is set to be released on March 6th, 2015.
