George Seaton’s literal feel-good comedy is the flipside of pandemic films like Contagion: a powerful virus ‘cures’ grumpiness and bad vibes, encouraging a kind of Urban Utopia. Clint Eastwood proves again that he Owns the western genre with this odd tale of land reform insurrection and establishment blowback, in New Mexico of 1906. To direct the script by the great Elmore Leonard, Eastwood brought in the western movie legend John Sturges. But Sturges discovered that collaboration now meant acceding to whatever the star wanted. The beautifully filmed movie falls apart even though Sturges saved the day with an 11th hour stunt action climax.

The 1960s and 1970s had their share of genre films that were popular with audiences. One of the most prolific was the biker film which, along with the horror film, were showcased to many audiences through the beloved and nearly extinct drive-in theatres. The genre reached a level of respectability in 1969 with the release of Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider which played at the Cannes Film Festival and went on to gross an estimated 160 times its production budget of $375,000. Little wonder why producers and filmmakers alike jumped on the biker film bandwagon. Easy Rider helped put Jack Nicholson on the map following his appearances in Richard Rush’s Hell’s Angels on Wheels (1967) and the then-forthcoming The Rebel Rousers (1970) by Martin B. Cohen.

From the ‘70s on calendar horror was all the rage with the slasher crowd; Black Christmas begat Halloween which gave us Friday the 13th and on and on, a red ‘X’ flooding the dates throughout the year. Of course we can’t forget birthdays either, so after Happy Birthday to Me we were offered Sweet Sixteen (1983), an interesting, sometimes icky film that leans closer to murder mystery than it does slasher.

Released in mid September by Century International, Sweet Sixteen got lost amid the masked mutilators and supernatural shenanigans of the day, but that shouldn’t deter any ardent fan of the era and those seeking a horror film grounded in story more than exploitation – depending on how it’s viewed.

The story of Sweet Sixteen has an air of Choose Your Own Adventure about it depending on which version you watch – the theatrical cut or the director’s cut.

Freshly divorced from American-International Pictures, Roger Corman leaps into the filmic mainstream with a fairly large-scale World War One aviation picture. He competes with the big studios but retains his nonconformist attitude: his retelling of the story of the Red Baron fixates on the theme of the death of chivalry in combat. For his star player Corman picks John Phillip Law, whose on-screen persona is a good fit for one of the first warrior aces of the sky.

When films say they are based on true stories, it is easy to take such statements with a pinch of salt. The Amityville Horror though is one that is so enshrined in pop culture that it has a whole legend built up around it, whether it is true or not. Second Sight have now brought the popular horror to Blu-ray in the UK and it is well worth buying.

The Amityville Horror is the story of the Lutz family, who move into the perfect family home on the coast of Long Island. Surprised at how cheap it was, it soon becomes apparent why when the shocking history of the house is revealed, along with the demonic presence that resides there.

It’s been quite a long time since Gary Busey was taken seriously as an actor of considerable talent, but back in 1978 he almost took home an Oscar for his spectacular portrayal of Buddy Holly in director Steve Rash’s controversial bio-pic, The Buddy Holly Story. Playing a 19 year old kid from Texas on the cusp of making rock and roll history at the age of 33, Busey lost a considerable amount of weight to embody the 146 pound front man, and more impressively, performed all of the songs sprinkled throughout the film live with a fictionalized version of Holly’s backing band, The Crickets. A relatively normal Gary Busey (Insignificance) stars in the 1978 music-filled bio-pic The Buddy Holly Story, making its Blu-ray debut from Twilight Time.

Directed by Steve Rash, the movie sketches the tale of the rock-and-roll legend Buddy Holly (Busey), a Texas boy whose musical imagination changed the face of popular music. Busey and his on-screen bandmates (Charles Martin Smith, Don Stroud) played and sang Holly’s landmark songs (including “That’ll Be the Day,” “Maybe Baby,” “Peggy Sue,” and “Not Fade Away”) live for the film, which won an Academy Award for Joe Renzetti for Best Musical Score Adaptation.

Code Red has been going “code blue” of late, releasing the likes of Nail Gun Massacre and Just Before Dawn on Blu-ray. We now know of seven more forthcoming Blu horror titles from the 70s, 80s, and 90s they have in the works to further empty your wallets in the coming year.

After all the debates, controversies, and stereotype accusations have cleared, looking back on Blaxploitation cinema today it’s easy to see healthy portions of the crime and action genres. Using these genres and the struggles of the black community, these films were created for those that wanted to see African American characters on the big screen not taking shit from the man, “getting over”, and–above all else—being the heroes in movies. In the documentary Baad Asssss Cinema, Samuel L. Jackson gives his take on the heroes of Blaxploitation: “We were tired of seeing the righteous black man. And all of a sudden we had guys who were…us. Or guys who did the things we wanted those guys to do.”

The unsung supporting players in these films that backed Fred Williamson and Pam Grier and many other stars were people acting and making a living off of it.

Released in an obvious attempt to capitalize on Norman Jewison's racially-charged 1967 Oscar winner In the Heat of the Night, MGM's 1969 suspense drama tick...tick...tick... attempts to emulate the smoldering tensions in a small southern town that permeated the earlier film. The MGM release is not on the caliber of the Jewison production but it is a consistently engrossing, well-acted drama that calls to mind just how relatively recently the civil rights battle had to be fought in the American South. Lee Madden, best known for directing Hell’s Angels ‘69, died of complications from pneumonia on April 9 in Camarillo, a town north of Los Angeles. He was 82. The American International Pictures release Hell’s Angels ‘69, the tale of two brothers who plan on robbing Las Vegas’ Caesar’s Palace, was the Brooklyn-born Madden’s first feature. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is the only fiction film in which the Oakland Hell’s Angels, including leader Sonny Barger, appeared. Madden’s other features were the bikers vs. rednecks adaptation of The Magnificent Seven, Angel Unchained (1970), starring Tyne Daly and Don Stroud, and which Madden also wrote and produced; The Night God Screamed (1971), starring 1940s Fox star Jeanne Crain as a woman pursued by Christian fanatics; and Night Creature (1978), a horror thriller featuring Donald Pleasence, Nancy Kwan, and a killer leopard. Lee Madden, who directed the cult film "Hell's Angels '69," died of complications from pneumonia on Thursday in Camarillo, Calif. He was 82.

Madden's first film was the 1969 release "Hell's Angels" for American International Pictures. The film starred the real Oakland Hell's Angels, including Sonny Barger, then the president of the Angels. It was the only fiction film in which the gang ever participated.

The film has been recently redeveloped as a potential remake at Sony.

Among Madden's other feature directing credits were 1970's "Angel Unchained," a biker remake of "The Magnificent Seven" that starred Tyne Daly and Don Stroud that he also wrote and produced; "The Night God Screamed" (1971), starring 1940s icon Jeanne Crain; and "Night Creature" (1978), starring Donald Pleasence.

The Brooklyn native also directed episodes of 1970s TV series including "Cade's County" starring Glenn Ford, "Bearcats!" starring Rod Taylor and "The Most Deadly Game" starring Ralph Bellamy.
