Alfonso Cuarón took the top feature film award for Roma at tonight’s 71st Annual DGA Awards, fellow feature film nominee Adam McKay took the TV drama series nod for Succession and Bo Burnham snagged the first-time director nod for Eighth Grade.
“Roma simply doesn’t exist without the generosity of spirit and effortless grace of Yalitza (Aparicio) and Marina (De Tavira). They somehow with the rest of my beautiful cast managed to bring to life this film from my memory,” Cuarón said in accepting the award for his film that is an homage to his childhood.
The guild award has been a top bellwether for the best directing Oscar. Last year’s winner Guillermo del Toro, who presented tonight’s award to Cuarón, went on to win the Academy Award in directing for The Shape of Water. The film won four Oscars in all, including best picture. The guild...

The Emmy Awards ballot for Best Comedy Directing lists 195 episodes from 105 series, up from 174 episodes from 82 series last year, when the nominees were:
“Atlanta” season 1
Winner — “B.A.N.” (Donald Glover)
“Silicon Valley” season 4
“Intellectual Property” (Jamie Babbit)
“Server Error” (Mike Judge)
“Veep” season 6
“Blurb” (Morgan Sackett)
“Justice” (Dale Stern)
“Groundbreaking” (David Mandel)
SEEanalysis of the Best Comedy Writing contenders.
“Veep” did not air this season. Lead “Atlanta” director Hiro Murai was snubbed last year; he has a stronger episode this time and more name recognition from directing the music video for Childish Gambino’s “This is America.”
Having been nominated two years ago for “Silicon Valley” when he last directed it, Alec Berg has submitted his work on the first season finale of “Barry.” He also directed this season’s “Silicon Valley” finale, but Best Comedy Directing is one of only six categories that precludes multiple ballot submissions. Over the weekend, specifically on Saturday night, two big precursors went down. The Directors Guild of America Awards and the Annie Awards were held, help to solidify two Oscar categories. Yes, as you’ll see, there’s now no mystery left about what the Academy Awards will cite in the Best Director and Best Animated Feature races. Frankly, there hasn’t been for some time now, but the last pieces of the puzzle were put together on Saturday. Those two categories are coronations now, and rightly so, quality wise. With DGA being the final Guild, that also really does launch us firmly into Phase Two, where members of the Academy will be making their final decisions about who and what will receive Oscar gold. Below you’ll be able to see Annie and DGA results, which probably shouldn’t have surprised anyone. The former went for Coco across the board,...

The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. That is the night before the Screen Actors Guild does the same. Unlike, the latter, which will air on TNT and TBS, the PGA ceremony is not televised. However, it is an equally important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 19 of the most recent 28 Best Picture champs. Last year, all nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture numbered among the 10 PGA contenders; only “Deadpool” was snubbed by the academy. The PGA prize went to “La La Land” while the Oscar was (eventually) won by “Moonlight.”

It’s so, so very difficult to determine how long to stick with a series. Some shows get off to a bad start and later find their voice. Others start bad and get worse. Still others are sporadic in quality, for whatever creative reason.
But the list below is meant to help. Whether you’re looking for a new binge and want to know when a season will hit its peak, or you want to sample shows by seeing the best episode first, check out IndieWire’s ranking of the best TV episodes of 2017.
We don’t necessarily endorse starting with the best episodes — especially if it happens to be the season finale — but in a world of “too much TV,” there’s no wrong way to find the next great show. Ranked by episodic quality, these are the 25 best individual half-hours and hour-long entries of the 2017 season.

“The whole show is not about buttholes, I promise you.”
An unconventional reassurance, but Andrea Savage is right. “I’m Sorry,” the latest, freshest comedy from TruTV, is about family, love, and the strange ways we have of sharing strange moments with each other. Savage stars as a comedy writer in La, making her way through the colliding perils that come with being a parent and living with a minimal filter. Andrea (the character’s name, as well) has a loving family, made up of husband Mike (Tom Everett Scott) and daughter Amelia (Olive Petrucci).
This particular day on set, though, they’re filming a scene at a poker table where the between-hands banter turns to some unconventional bedroom habits. We’ll let guest star Jason Mantzoukas take it from here.
Kyle's idea of the perfect date is also a great way to get brain freeze. Watch a sneak peek from Wednesday's all-new #ImSorryTV!

IndieWire’s Vote: “Veep”
It hurts us to think “Transparent” and “Master of None” may never get a turn at the table, especially this year after both delivered such stellar seasons: Jill Soloway’s follow-up far surpassed her already impressive first season, and Aziz Ansari’s Netflix debut showed just how diversity in front of and behind the camera can benefit our culture (not to mention how smart, insightful writing can still appeal to mainstream audiences). But David Mandel pulled off an equally impressive feat by matching (if not besting) “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci’s Emmy-winning prior season, stepping into massive shoes and running a six-minute mile without tripping. The best comedy, nay, the best series on TV remains the one to beat this Emmys season. All hail the queen.

Veep, Season 5, Episode 4: “Mee-Maw”
Written by Alex Gregory & Peter Huyck
Directed by Dale Stern
Airs Sundays at 10:30pm on HBO
For Selina Meyer, winning trumps all other personal concerns, whether those entail being sympathetic to a grieving daughter or honoring her deceased mother. That singular focus is the secret to Selina’s success, but it also makes her a monster. Sometimes that monstrous side peeks out and the public gets an eyeful, usually leading to her failure. Veep is funniest and most successful when Selina is terrible enough that she dances on the line between success and failure. “Mee-Maw” finds her at her worst, which is best for viewers.
While speaking at a windmill farm, where she’s careful to remind the press that she has won the popular vote, Selina learns that her mother has had a stroke and is on life support. Even though she doesn...

HollywoodNews.com:Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford today announced the DGA’s nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television and Commercials for the year 2011.
?The caliber of work being done on television these days is incredible, and our director nominees in each category are an indispensable element to the success of every project — establishing and enhancing the vision and tone, eliciting outstanding performances and furthering the narrative arc through their creative choices,? said Hackford. ?That they are able to create excellence regardless of obstacles like tighter schedules and in an environment in which audiences have more entertainment options to choose from — is a true testament to the importance of directorial skill in television.?
The winners will be announced at the 64th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles.
