"Will you come with me when I go to space tomorrow?" Freestyle Digital Media has unveiled a fun trailer for an indie comedy called Darla in Space, a kooky, wacky creation from the filmmakers Eric Laplante & Susie Moon as their feature debut. This premiered at the 2024 Slamdance Film Festival earlier this year, and it'll be out to watch on VOD in October. Darla Peterson just found out she owes the IRS $349,000.22. She teams up with a sentient kombucha scoby named "Mother" who has the ability to grant mind-blowing orgasms to pay off the debt. In exchange, Mother wants Darla's help getting to space. Is this a match made in heaven, or the other place? Alex E. Harris plays Darla, with Constance Shulman, Thomas Jay Ryan, Jenn Lyon, Rasheda Crockett, Eamon O'Connell, and Js Oliver. This is such a weird concept, and it's a real shoestring indie made for less than $100K.

Showtime’s satirical thriller “The Curse,” created by stars Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie and also starring Emma Stone, has exclusively shared its Emmy submission plans with Variety.
The three multi-hyphenates will have more than one chance at recognition across various categories for producing, acting, directing, writing and editing.

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has praised the show ‘The Curse’ and said that it’s unlike anything he has ever seen on television before.
Nolan was seen moderating a panel for ‘The Curse’, the Showtime series that stars Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone.
In the panel that the cable network shared on YouTube, Nolan praised the show, saying: “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen on television before. I think the show is incredible.”
Nolan said that this type of show could only be made now during the “anarchy of the streaming era” and that “tone is the star” of the series — comparing it to the first season of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.
“Congratulations on an incredible show that’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen on television before. There are so few shows that come along that genuinely have no precedence,” Nolan said as the panel ended, reports deadline.

An alleged curse doesn't make things easy for a pair of newlyweds in the first season of The Curse TV show on Showtime. Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from the premiere of Showtime’s “The Curse” now streaming on Paramount+.
In the opening scene of Showtime’s “The Curse,” Asher and Whitney Siegel do a good deed. Well, sort of.
The cameras are rolling on the married couple’s new HGTV series, and they’ve offered a down-on-his-luck man a job at a new café. A producer is stepping in to apply fake tears on his mother, sick with cancer, whose genuine reaction to the news apparently isn’t sufficient for TV. Barrier Coffee, this man’s new employer, is little more than a set piece — a paid sponsor of the series with no long-term business plan.
Created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, “The Curse” follows philanthropic house flippers — “flipanthropists,” if you will — who descend into a New Mexico town to do good, or at least their idea of it. As...

This post contains spoilers for the first episode of The Curse, which is now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime.
Perhaps the only way to begin discussing Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie’s deliberately weird and even more deliberately uncomfortable new miniseries is to paraphrase Reservoir Dogs. So let me tell you what The Curse is about. It’s all about a girl who digs a guy with a small dick. The whole show is a metaphor for small dicks.
Well, maybe not the whole show. But a lot of it.

Throughout his television career, Nathan Fielder has built two separate but overlapping images of himself. The first, his on-screen persona, is that of a stone-faced comedian who constantly places himself and others in uncomfortable situations, flubbing something as basic as a high-five or a polite joke, sometimes chastising a subject over a minor misstep. The second, as a philosopher of modern life, is that of a reality TV genius who uses the medium to comment on the nature of media consumption, what it means to “represent reality” in such shows, and the ethics of putting real people and their troubles in front of an audience.
The experimental HBO series The Rehearsal provided plenty of fuel for debates about whether or not Fielder was exploiting his subjects, regardless of their TV-ready antics and their signing release forms. Of course, such debates were at the heart of the series itself, as Fielder...

At the onset, before enough time has passed for anything to go awry, Asher (Nathan Fielder) and Whitney Siegel (Emma Stone) play up one predominant truth of their home improvement project: There are no losers. Asher recites the assertion like a mantra, and really, who could blame him? The newly married couple moved to the struggling New Mexico community of Española not just to build a life for themselves, but to better the entire town. Whitney’s passive homes are eco-friendly; she designed them to carry a negligible environmental footprint, and she’s working to tear down old, abandoned houses that will be replaced with her new, dynamic homes. Asher handles the paperwork — buying and selling, construction contracts, etc. — and together, they’re shooting a pilot for HGTV that will spread the word about sustainable living to communities nationwide.

Plot: A genre-bending drama series that explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring on their new HGTV show.
Review: As I write this review, I am still unsure how to process The Curse. I am a fan of everyone involved in this project, including A24 and their continuous streak of financing the strangest projects that no one else would produce. Based on the trailer, I expected The Curse to be a satire of reality DIY shows that have grown in popularity over the last twenty years. I also expected the series to blend Nathan Fielder’s signature deadpan, semi-documentary projects like Nathan For You and How To with John Wilson. Instead, The Curse is a surreal and bizarre show that defies categorization and combines elements of multiple genres, including psychological horror, to generate a narrative that defies categorization.

For good or ill, the new Showtime series "The Curse" just about defies description. On its face, the hourlong dark comedy-drama is a sly and nasty satire of shows like "Love It or List It," "Flip or Flop," and others from the HGTV stable of faux-reality "reality television." One of the series' co-creators, co-writers, and co-stars, Nathan Fielder, has long excelled in making undefinable TV shows that operate on a specific level of bleak comedy that also raises questions of what is and isn't real, and whether anything presented as part of the television landscape can truly embody reality. The other co-creator, co-writer, and co-star, Benny Safdie, has become as recognizable as a performer in making uncompromisingly dark films like "Good Time" and "Uncut Gems," which push their characters past the breaking point and into unexpected realms. What "The Curse" does lines up well with both Fielder and Safdie, and...

Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder co-star as a newly married couple trying to conceive a child while starting their new home-improvement show in the latest trailer for Showtime’s The Curse, which dropped on Friday.
About halfway through the nearly three-minute trailer, Fielder’s character, Asher Siegel, while doing a staged photo-op where he donates a lone $100 bill in his wallet to a young girl in a parking lot, snatches the bill back after he thinks his generosity is too great and the cameras are no longer rolling.
In response, the now angry young child casts an alleged spell on Siegel and nightmares soon come knocking on the young couple in the community of Española, New Mexico.
“Things have been a little weird,” Siegel’s character concedes at one point in the trailer, while Stone’s character, Whitney Siegel, blurts out during another clip: “This doesn’t make sense.”

Nathan Fielder is an off-beat comedian who graduated from one of Canada’s top business schools with really good grades. His former shows, Nathan For You and the recent The Rehearsal from HBO, are masterful at being uncomfortable and cringe-inducing by design as part of the humor. His combined powers with Uncut Gems director Benny Safdie bring us an abstract trailer for The Curse. The Curse is a rare scripted narrative series for Fielder, and it teams him up with the show’s star, Emma Stone. Stone is currently gaining praise in the festival circuit for her new bold Frankenstein-esque film, Poor Things.

Nathan Fielder, Emma Stone and Benny Safdie star in the new trailer for Showtime’s bizarre, home-flipping comedy series “The Curse.”
Fielder and Stone play a newly married couple, Asher and Whitney, who are the hosts of a house-flipping TV show and also trying to conceive their first child. Their lives and careers are turned upside down after they become cursed by a child.
The trailer begins by showing the odd nature of Asher and Whitney’s show, as they flub voiceover narration and fix up impoverished houses. “This isn’t your typical, home-flipping show. My homes are reflecting the local communities. And we’re husband and wife. So what could go wrong?” Stone says ominously in the trailer.
Things quickly go wrong when producer Dougie (Safdie) instructs Asher — who insists that he’s a good person — to give $100 to a girl while the cameras are rolling. After they get the staged shot,...

The Curse teaser trailer finds Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder sharing unique ways to extinguish fires
Whitney (Emma Stone) and Asher (Nathan Fielder) have a lot on their plate. In addition to launching a house-flipping series on an HGTV-like network and trying to have a baby, their new venture is seemingly cursed, making life difficult on several fronts. The Curse teaser trailer finds the couple filming an intro to their new show, telling their audience, “you can put out fires with the sun.” Whitney and Asher can’t wait to share this intriguing method of extinguishing fires with the Española Fire Department and show them how a few tiny changes to their fire station can make passive energy the newest recruit on their squad. Any questions? I have a few.
The Curse premieres on November 10 via Paramount+ with Showtime before its on-air Showtime debut on November 12.
Joining Stone and Fielder for the genre-bending series is Benny Safdie, who plays Dougie, the producer of Whitney and Asher’s “Flipanthropy” show.

Knock, knock: Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder are looking to flip out.
Fielder co-created “The Curse” with Benny Safdie, who also co-stars as a reality TV producer following an unhinged married couple (Stone and Fielder) as they gentrify a New Mexico neighborhood that just may or may not be haunted.
The A24-produced Showtime series marks Safdie’s first scripted TV foray. Per the official synopsis, Asher (Fielder) and Whitney (Stone) Siegel are married entrepreneurs whose latest plan is to flip houses and convert them into eco-friendly homes for the struggling residents of Española, New Mexico — all for an HGTV-style reality show being overseen by an ingratiating producer (Safdie) with demons of his own. From this premise, which nimbly touches upon inescapable American issues of race, class, and capital, Fielder and Safdie branch out into an increasingly tangled network of ethical and moral gray zones, expertly balancing the tender and the merciless.

Even though it may not be strictly cinema, moving images don’t get much more anticipated this year than a new collaboration between Nathan Fielder, Benny Safdie, and Emma Stone. The Curse, a ten-part A24 and Showtime series, will first premiere its initial trio of episodes at the 61st New York Film Festival before showing theatrically at Film at Lincoln Center and airing on Showtime this fall, and now the first teaser finally landed.
“The Curse is a genre-bending series that explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring in their new home-improvement show,” reads the official synopsis. The NYFF blurb digs a bit deeper, noting, “Fielder and Emma Stone play Asher and Whitney Siegel, married entrepreneurs (don’t call them gentrifiers!) whose latest plan is to flip houses and convert them into eco-friendly homes for the struggling residents of Española,...

Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder have their sledgehammers ready, but they might not only be breaking down walls in their new Showtime and A24 comedy “The Curse.” The studios have released the first trailer for their genre-defying new series, set to premiere on Nov. 10 on Paramount+ and air Nov. 12 on Showtime.
Stone and Fielder play a married couple, Whitney and Asher, who flip houses on a new show called “Flipanthropy,” seemingly similar to real-life HGTV home renovation shows like “Fixer Upper.” Whitney and Asher’s “Flipanthropy” series is produced by a character named Dougie, played by co-creator Benny Safdie, who harbors some secrets.
Despite the couple’s big break and their hopes to have a child, all is not well for the house-flipping duo. Whitney and Asher, based in Española, N.M., are soon faced with a mysterious curse that will “disturb the relationship.”
