Returning for its 30th anniversary edition next year, Slamdance Film Festival has now unveiled its full film lineup for 2024. Kicking off with Oscar-winning filmmaker Carol Dysinger’s One Bullet, this year’s festival will showcase 32 features both in Park City and Salt Lake City from January 19-25 and online screenings will be available on the Slamdance Channel from January 22-28.

“Our 2024 Slamdance lineup is a testament to filmmakers who dare to push their stories to the very edge of filmmaking, making it deeply personal yet globally resonant,” said Festival Director Taylor Miller. “Their raw passion and risk-taking echo our commitment to exploring uncharted territories of cinematic expression. This year, we proudly host the most inclusive and accessible festival we’ve ever had, staying true to the core objectives I aimed to cultivate with our programmers when I took this job.”

The 2024 programming was selected from more than 9,000 submissions, 1,729 of which were features.

Review: As I write this review, I am still unsure how to process The Curse. I am a fan of everyone involved in this project, including A24 and their continuous streak of financing the strangest projects that no one else would produce. Based on the trailer, I expected The Curse to be a satire of reality DIY shows that have grown in popularity over the last twenty years. I also expected the series to blend Nathan Fielder’s signature deadpan, semi-documentary projects like Nathan For You and How To with John Wilson. Instead, The Curse is a surreal and bizarre show that defies categorization and combines elements of multiple genres, including psychological horror, to generate a narrative that defies categorization.

For good or ill, the new Showtime series "The Curse" just about defies description. On its face, the hourlong dark comedy-drama is a sly and nasty satire of shows like "Love It or List It," "Flip or Flop," and others from the HGTV stable of faux-reality "reality television." One of the series' co-creators, co-writers, and co-stars, Nathan Fielder, has long excelled in making undefinable TV shows that operate on a specific level of bleak comedy that also raises questions of what is and isn't real, and whether anything presented as part of the television landscape can truly embody reality. The other co-creator, co-writer, and co-star, Benny Safdie, has become as recognizable as a performer in making uncompromisingly dark films like "Good Time" and "Uncut Gems," which push their characters past the breaking point and into unexpected realms. “For All Mankind” Releases Season 4 Trailer

Apple TV+ has taken a giant leap toward Season 4 of its critically acclaimed space drama series “For All Mankind.” The streamer has released the official trailer for the upcoming season, which will premiere on Friday, Nov. 10 with one episode per week every Friday through Jan. 12.

The 10-episode fourth season will take place in 2003, eight years after Season 3, with Happy Valley having rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars. With the focus of the space program shifting to the capture and mining of mineral-rich and valuable asteroids, simmering tensions between the residents of the international base threaten to undo everything with the fate of both Earth and Mars at their hands.

About halfway through the nearly three-minute trailer, Fielder’s character, Asher Siegel, while doing a staged photo-op where he donates a lone $100 bill in his wallet to a young girl in a parking lot, snatches the bill back after he thinks his generosity is too great and the cameras are no longer rolling.

In response, the now angry young child casts an alleged spell on Siegel and nightmares soon come knocking on the young couple in the community of Española, New Mexico.

“Things have been a little weird,” Siegel’s character concedes at one point in the trailer, while Stone’s character, Whitney Siegel, blurts out during another clip: “This doesn’t make sense.”

Whitney (Emma Stone) and Asher (Nathan Fielder) have a lot on their plate. In addition to launching a house-flipping series on an HGTV-like network and trying to have a baby, their new venture is seemingly cursed, making life difficult on several fronts. The Curse teaser trailer finds the couple filming an intro to their new show, telling their audience, “you can put out fires with the sun.” Whitney and Asher can’t wait to share this intriguing method of extinguishing fires with the Española Fire Department and show them how a few tiny changes to their fire station can make passive energy the newest recruit on their squad.
