Hammer Horror: the name rings so ubiquitously in the realms of cinema, and especially around Halloween. Hearing the name, you’re likely to picture one of a number of the British studio’s releases between the 1950s and early 1970s which boasted decadent set design and an intensity of fear and playfulness. A studio of progressive storytelling compared to other offerings of the time, in Hammer’s horror subdivision could be found Technicolor horror (and its subgenres), often sexually and socially provocative, taking classical source material and turning it on its head. Seen as vulgar to the critics, audiences loved the low-budget thrills of Hammer Horror as a refreshing alternative to Hollywood, with two actors in particular becoming distinct heroes of the cycle, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. But what are the sounds behind the horror? The wonder of movie soundtracks can be put on best display in the horror genre,...

When you think of body horror, "The Fly" is easily a Top 10 contender among the most influential entries. Both the 1958 original and the '86 remake thrilled audiences in very different ways. While the original relied on costuming and admittedly shoddy (by today's standards) visual effects, the remake arrived in a decade famously known for its stomach-turning practical effects. Yet both managed to push the envelope on horror storytelling that often went over the edge, perhaps even taking things way too far.
The first film, directed by Kurt Neumann, was based upon a 1957 short story of the same name. It became a box office success and spawned two sequels, 1959's "Return of the Fly" and "Curse of the Fly" in 1965. Despite a rough road from idea to creation, director David Cronenberg's 1986 remake flipped everything about the original on its head. A sequel, simply titled "The Fly II," followed three years...

Everything I knew about British culture as a kid I learned from TV. Canada has always been inundated with programming from our Commonwealth pal; Monty Python, Benny Hill, The Two Ronnies, et al paraded before my eyes but nary a horror. And then I discovered the Amicus and Hammer films; worlds unto themselves for exploration. While I’m still knee deep in cleavage and cobwebs, I’m compelled to check out the indie scene; and I happened to come across Psychomania (1973): a well known to some, unknown to many, and now beloved by me Occult Biker film that is absurd as it is entertaining.
Absurdity really is the prominent compound in this heady mash of free spirits and (un)deader ones; the mix of motorcycle mayhem with splashes of Satan works better than it should. That’s probably (at least partly) because the lower budget makes for lower stakes...

In 1965, maverick British producer and writer Harry Alan Towers (The Bloody Judge) scored a hit with The Face of Fu Manchu, a thrilling revival of Sax Rohmer’s super-villain imperiously portrayed by Christopher Lee. Powerhouse/Indicator have lovingly brought together all five films in the series and in the process produced a rather spectacular collection.
Christopher Lee was of course no stranger to playing maniacal, Asian characters. He had already played Chung King, leader of the Red Dragon Tong's in Hammer’s movie The Terror of the Tongs (1961) directed by Anthony Bushell. Tall, dark and menacing in his stature, Lee was perfect casting for novelist Sax Rohmer’s notorious Chinese criminal mastermind. Produced by Harry Alan Towers and Oliver A. Unger, The Face of Fu Manchu was a British / West German co-production. Behind the camera was Australian-born British film director Don Sharp,...

The Fu Manchu Cycle—1965-1969
Blu ray
Powerhouse Indicator
1965 – 1969 / 96, 93, 91, 94, 92 min. / 2:33:1, 1:85, 1:66
Starring Christoper Lee, Tsai Chin
Cinematography by Ernest Steward, John Von Kotze, Manuel Merino
Directed by Don Sharp, Jeremy Summers, Jesús Franco
Arthur Henry Ward was born in Birmingham in 1883—at the age of 20 he adopted the pen name of Sax Rohmer, specializing in standard issue crime fiction and otherworldly tales of terror. In 1912 he folded both genres into one sinister figure from the East, a so-called “devil doctor” named Fu Manchu. The book covers alone were xenophobic horror shows and if there was any doubt the stories themselves were wildly racist, the author confirmed it in the description of his star villain: “the Yellow Peril incarnate in one man.”
An authority on philosophy, medicine, and idiosyncratic torture devices, Manchu made his debut in The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu which was quickly followed by The Return of Dr.

Have the classic films of Hammer been subjected to more reissues than The Beatles? Not by a long shot but it can feel that way to dedicated Hammer-heads. The relentless tide of upgrades and re-packagings both foreign and domestic, each with their own pleasures and pitfalls, could inspire loyal fans to lobby for their own version of the Consumer Protection Agency – Home Video Division. Here’s a look at what should have been the definitive collection – from 2016, Universal’s Hammer Horror 8 Film Collection.

Remarkably, Tom succeeds and soon joins the ranks of the walking – and riding – dead!

Hammer Blu-rays The Devil Rides Out (1968, dir. Terence Fisher)
Hammer applies its trademark Gothic veneer with considerably greater care than usual in this, the second and best of the company's three stabs at the satanic stylings of author Dennis Wheatley. Christopher Lee comes over to the light for a rare foray as central hero the Duc de Richleau, teaming up with friend Rex van Rijn (Leon Greene) to prevent the evil Satanist Mocata (Charles Gray) from enmeshing the son of his old friend (Patrick Mower) into a devil-worshipping cult.
The Devil Rides Out is perhaps best remembered for what Lee argues in his commentary to be Hammer's most enduring image, that of our heroes fighting a series of spectral and psychological nemeses from within the protective confines of a ritual circle. And yet the most chilling scene contains no special effects, but is instead a simple conversation between the wife...

Hammer Director Sharp Dies
Hammer Horror director Don Sharp has died, aged 90.
The Australia-born moviemaker passed away in Cornwall, England earlier this month, according to Variety. No other details of his death had been released as WENN went to press.
Sharp was best known for being brought in to revive the flagging Hammer Film studio in Britain in the 1960s after the company suffered a drop in popularity. He went on to direct numerous horror pictures for the firm including The Kiss of the Vampire, The Devil-Ship Pirates and Rasputin: The Mad Monk.
His other film work outside of Hammer included directing The Face of Fu Manchu and The Brides of Fu Manchu with Sir Christopher Lee. He was also behind the 1978 remake of The Thirty Nine Steps, starring Robert Powell, a 1974 film version of TV drama Callan with Edward Woodward, and 1979's Bear Island with Donald Sutherland and Vanessa Redgrave.

Some really sad news has emerged this holiday week as we've lost a true icon of our industry. While his name may not jump out at you unless you're as obsessive as we are, his movies have been making people leap out of their skin for decades.
According to Variety, Don Sharp, an Australia-born film director who was brought in to revive Hammer Films' sagging horror franchise in the mid-1960s -- and succeeded -- despite having no experience in the genre, died December 14th in Cornwall, England. He was 90.

Sharp directed Christopher Lee in six films including Rasputin The Mad Monk and two .60s Fu Manchu movies. His bizarre biker/zombie hybrid Psychomania was way ahead of its time and with Curse Of The Fly he showed himself to be a master of making the best with low-budget conditions of work, hiding his monsters in the shadows and employing atmosphere and music to create effective horror. Sharp also worked on British television, directing several episodes from The Avengers. Don Sharp died Sunday December 18th at age 89.

According to various online sources, Tasmanian-born director Don Sharp has died. He was 89.
A former small-time actor (The Planter's Wife, The Cruel Sea), Sharp (born April 19, 1922, in Hobart) is best remembered for several low-budget thrillers he directed in the 1960s, such as Hammer's The Kiss of the Vampire (1963), the sci-fier Curse of the Fly (1965), and the The Brides of Fu Manchu (1966), starring Christopher Lee as the East Asian fiend.
Sharp's other notable efforts include The Death Wheelers / Psychomania (1973), about a youth gang terrorizing a small town; the Ira drama Hennessy (1975), with A-listers Rod Steiger and Lee Remick; The Thirty Nine Steps, an underrated remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 classic starring Robert Powell in Robert Donat's old man-on-the-run role; and the slow-moving adventure drama Bear Island, featuring Vanessa Redgrave and Donald Sutherland.

Fu Manchu for Mayor! Joe Dante explains.
Just look at this:
Click to make huuuuuuge.
Classic FemJep stuff, huh? (That’s females-in-jeopardy for you non-industry types.)
Karin Dor grapples with one of Fu Manchu’s dacoit assassins in the first and best of the sixties Fu Manchu series starring Christopher Lee, The Face of Fu Manchu, based on the Oriental arch-villain character created by Sax Rohmer in 1913 and continued in a series of novels through 1959.
“Imagine a person, tall, lean and feline, high-shouldered, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan, … one giant intellect, with all the resources of science past and present … Imagine that awful being, and you have a mental picture of Dr. Fu-Manchu, the yellow peril incarnate in one man.” – Rohmer in The Insidious Dr. Fu Manchu

Hennessy
Directed by: Don Sharp
Cast: Rod Steiger, Lee Remick, Richard Johnson
Running Time: 1 hr 45 min
Rating: PG
Due Out: June 6, 2011
Plot: A former member of the NRA (Rod Steiger) loses his wife and daughter to sectarian violence. In revenge, he decides to blow up British Parliament on the opening day, when Queen Elizabeth II will be in attendance.
Who’S It For? Fans of ’70s thrillers like The French Connection who won’t mind this inferior take.
Movie:
The film has a really exciting premise but it becomes bogged down by a dull delivery. Steiger’s Niall Hennessy is a man of few words and occasionally muddled action. The initial scene where his wife and child are gunned down on accident by a British soldier left me with more compassion for the soldier than the family members. Steiger gives about as much as he can for an underwritten character,...

Shooting wrapped yesterday on a new anthology film with some heavy genre names to its credit. The film is being co-produced by Severin Films. No word yet on a release date.
Severin Films and France’s Metaluna Productions today announced their international co-production of The Theatre Bizarre, a modern horror anthology inspired by the over-the-top shocks of Paris’ early 20th century ‘Theatre du Grand Guignol’. The feature will be comprised of six films by six cutting-edge genre directors enlisted from around the world and granted total creative freedom. The Theater Bizarre is executive produced by Daryl J. Tucker, and produced by Severin’s Carl Daft, David Gregory and John Cregan, Metaluna’s Fabrice Lambot, and Michael Ruggiero of Nightscape Entertainment. Production on Richard Stanley’s (Hardware) segment ‘The Mother Of Toads’ began 10/10/10 in Montségur in the French Pyrenees.

Severin Films has been one of those companies for the past five years that have been releasing some great flicks on DVD and Blu-Ray. Now, they announce that they will be handling all future production and marketing for Intervision Picture Corporation. It’s a match made in heaven if you ask me. Severin puts out quality releases and with them behind the wheel of Intervision product, that definitely puts a smile to my face. Their first release, the 1983 shot-on-video slasher called Sledgehammer. Read on for the official press release.

The arrangement commences with the 5/10 release of 1983’s Sledgehammer, notorious as the first shot-on-tape ‘slasher’ thriller for the then-exploding home video market. It's a strange one, is Don Sharp's Psychomania. The 1972 undead biker gang picture is a celebration of fuzzy (read: non existent) logic, aimless youth, random acts of violence and magic toads.
Nicky Henson stars as Tom. Leader of The Living Dead, a leather clad gang of young bikers who race around town - and the local circle of druid era standing stones - in their skull painted helmets. They are your typical disaffected youth, rebelling against everything seemingly just to relieve the boredom. But Tom's not satisfied with just terrorizing the locals for a few days here and there. He wants more. He wants to do it Forever.
Lucky for him Tom's mother is an gifted medium with a magic toad and the key to eternal life. And after being tested in a magic room - a room that killed his father years before - and found worthy Tom is given the secret.

For this, a very special Halloween edition of Video Home Invasion, we're going to take a look at Severin Films lovely collection of rare and unsettling cult horror films. I love horror movies as much as the next guy, but many of these titles had me scratching my head. The Sinful Dwarf, while not strictly horror, is certainly horrifying. Crucible of Terror is a blip in horror history, but a landmark in the career of Mike Raven. Then there are the lesser known works of Lucio Fulci, a personal favorite. Many films that deserve to be viewed at least once, given perhaps more recognition and attention than they sometimes deserve by a company dedicated to bringing evil into your home.
Lucio Fulci is a master of horror who is, by far, best known for his sizable and reputable collection of zombie films. However, he did make other films as well,...

You know we are nearing the end of October when the pace of horror DVD title releases starts slowing down. I guess the powers that be banked on everyone buying horror DVDs several weeks before Halloween. Is that true? Are you folks doing just that, or are you only now starting your Halloween viewing party planning?
Anyway, while this week's bounty includes monsters in the water and in the sky, with mostly direct-to-dvd, TV movies and old re-releases, the juggernaut monster is the one in space with a complete set in one neat package.

Great news for Lee Remick fans: eleven of her movies will be shown on Thursday, Aug. 26, on Turner Classic Movies. Remick Day is part of TCM’s "Summer Under the Stars" series. [Lee Remick schedule.] I’ve been a major Lee Remick fan since I saw this pretty, talented blonde with the bluest of blue eyes in two movies: Otto Preminger‘s courtroom comedy-drama Anatomy of a Murder (1959) and, in a supporting role, Martin Ritt‘s The Long, Hot Summer (1958). Her movies have ranged from the excellent (the aforementioned Anatomy of a Murder) to the exceedingly awful (The Medusa Touch), but no matter how atrocious the screenplay Remick has always brought honesty, intelligence, and a cool sensuality to her roles. There are four TCM premieres on Lee Remick Day: Robert Mulligan‘s drama Baby, the Rain Must Fall (1965), co-starring Steve McQueen and Don Murray; Don Sharp‘s Ira thriller Hennessy (1975), with Rod Steiger...

Nothing says the Seventies quite like undead bikers terrorizing a small town, and if you've never seen the 1973 classic UK film Psychomania, then you're in luck as come October Severin Films will be releasing a special edition DVD of the flick directed by Don Sharp.
From the Press Release:
The grooviest zombie biker movie of them all is being exhumed and, after years of shoddy bootlegs and sub-par presentations, is getting the Special Edition treatment from Severin. Psychomania stars Beryl Reed (Beast in the Cellar) and, in his last performance, George Sanders (Village of the Damned), who perfect a formula to return from the grave via some sort of satanic toad worship. Said formula is then used by young Tommy and his biker gang, The Living Dead, who, after offing themselves in a variety of creative ways, free-wheel back from the dead to wreak havoc on a small English town.

You can’t beat late night television to catch some of the oddities of the film world. Series’ like Moviedrome and Mondo Macabro presented some weird and wonderful films, but sheer scheduling alone would bring the occasional strange delight our way. The only bonus of insomnia was that I’d never miss these films when they were on and it’s how I got into loving film, the veritable B-movie banquet that was the early hours So, here are my choices of five late night TV gems:
Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark (1973) Now you see them, now you don’t…now you die
Be afraid, be very afraid in this very effective made-for-tv movie which has already made an entry in fistinface’s ‘Five: TV Movies Not About Eating Disorders’. I love cheesy TV movies but this is the rare thing of a darker, more original film and...

Towne takes giant 'Steps'
A television remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic The 39 Steps is in the works at Carlton America with Academy Award-winning scribe Robert Towne set to write and helm the project. Carlton America, the U.S. production wing of U.K.-based Carlton International Media Group, has signed Towne (Chinatown, Mission: Impossible 3) to write and direct what will in fact be the fourth version of the classic John Buchan novel to grace Carlton's library. 39 Steps is part of Carlton International's Film Collection -- one of the world's largest catalogs of classic movies. Carlton International owns the rights to three versions of the film; in addition to the 1935 Hitchcock version, the library is home to Ralph Thomas' 1959 version, starring Kenneth More, and the 1978 version by Don Sharp.
