For over a decade, Black Twitter served as a cultural hub and megaphone for the community. People gathered to joke and organize, find solidarity, and drive change. But with Twitter’s decline, this important online haven has faced erasure. Enter director Prentice Penny’s three-part documentary for Hulu. Black Twitter: A People’s History sets out to document this digital movement before its potential loss, capturing both its lighter and heavier moments.
Penny guides viewers through Black Twitter’s rise and evolution. We hear from journalists, comedians, and scholars about those early years. When hashtags like #UKnowUrBlackWhen took off and users flocked in bigger numbers than other sites. How it became a space to openly discuss pop culture and politics within the community. Figures like April Reign explain how platforms like Twitter enabled new forms of activism around issues like #OscarsSoWhite.
Woven throughout is necessary context on the offline realities that shaped experiences online.

Insecure actress Amanda Seales has addressed claims that she was difficult to work with on the HBO comedy-drama and shared her side of the story on her beef with the show’s star and creator, Issa Rae. Speaking on the latest episode of former footballer Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, Seales shot down claims that she was a “mean girl” on the Emmy-nominated series. Instead, she blamed Rae for not “protecting” her when it came to behind-the-scenes conflicts. “There’s a whole narrative that is completely false that people keep spinning. They keep saying, you know, that I’m this mean girl on this set, that I harmed these people on this set,” Seales said, per Decider. “I just want to point out something very basic. How can I be a mean girl on a set that ain’t my set? How?” she continued. “It’s your show.

Kyra Sedgwick is not in her pop culture trivia era, at least judging from her performance on a new episode of Celebrity Jeopardy!. The actor took her best crack at a category called “Also a Taylor Swift Song,” and despite throwing out a few guesses, she wasn’t able to correctly assign any of the clues to the singer’s tunes.
Just to be abundantly clear here: All the clues in the “Also a Taylor Swift Song” category describe a word or phrase that — you guessed it — is also the name of a Taylor Swift song. Sure, there are a lot of songs to choose from, but the Jeopardy! writers certainly didn’t go for any deep cuts. For example, the $200 clue reads: “This washing machine cycle using cold water and low spin speed is suggested for lingerie and silk neckties.” (Say it with us now: “Delicate!”)

Fans of The Real watched Jeannie Mai and Jeezy’s love story. But some had reservations about their romance due to Mai’s past controversial statements about interracial dating. As a cultural critic and activist for Black civil and social rights, Amanda Seales had her own thoughts about Mai’s comments. Seales, who is also considered overly critical at times by some, didn’t take much offense to Mai’s remarks for a specific reason.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, Mastercard is sponsoring “She Run This,” a three-part panel series spotlighting Black female entrepreneurs and musicians. On Friday, Feb. 3, Mastercard’s vp of global sponsorships Laytoya Bennett-Johnson was joined by trailblazing rappers Salt-n-Pepa, emerging rapper Baby Tate, Grammy-nominated rapper Rapsody, entrepreneur Bridgid Coulter Cheadle and journalist Gia Peppers, who moderated the conversation.
The panelists were invited to speak about how they’ve built their brands, the ways in which entrepreneurship and creativity have impacted their businesses and musical careers, how they define success as women working in and around the entertainment industry and more.
“Before you step into this business you’ve got to know who you are and which lines you won’t cross,” Rapsody said to the group and guests. “When I was young and looking at what I thought was success — platinum plaques and sold-out arenas — [I later realized] those are materialistic things.

It came down to the wire — the Emmys are next month, after all — but NBC and the Television Academy have finally found a host for this year’s ceremony: “Saturday Night Live” star Kenan Thompson.
Thompson, the longest-running cast member in “SNL” history, was named after a lengthy search by NBC, the Academy and Emmys producers Done+Dusted and Reggie Hudlin to find an A-list name that might shake things up. It turns out, the A-lister was in their own backyard. The telecast will air live Sept. 12 on NBC, and stream on Peacock as well.
