- The handsome and muscular Dave Ruby was born David Rubenstein in 1945 in the Bronx in New York City. Of Jewish descent, his father was from Poland while his mother's family came from Russia. When Dave was six years old he moved with his family to Queens, where he was brought up in Kew Garden Hills. Ruby was a jock in high school who played football and baseball as well as ran track. Dave tried out for the major baseball team the New York Mets three times. Following graduation from high school Ruby joined the National Guard in order to avoid the Vietnam draft, worked a series of part time jobs, and made several abortive attempts to become a police officer. Dave attended New York City Community College for a single term and briefly worked in hotel management before deciding on a career as a court reporter.
Ruby became involved in the swinging scene in the early 1970's. During this time Dave was hired by the swinger's club The Midnight Interlude to front their cable TV advertisements. Ruby did his first hardcore movie in the mid-1970's after responding to an ad placed by noted East Coast adult filmmaker Leonard Kirtman. Dave subsequently signed up with Dorothy Palmer's casting agency and went on to appear in a slew of hardcore loops and explicit adult features for such top directors as Lasse Braun, Chuck Vincent, Carter Stevens, Fred J. Lincoln, Phil Prince, Joe Davian, and Shaun Costello. Moreover, Ruby also worked as a male escort, did some nude modeling for Gay Scene magazine, and performed in a live S&M sex show at Club O in the early 1980's. After quitting porn in the late 1980's Dave got married in 1994 and retired from his regular day job as a court reporter with a full pension in 2002. The father of two sons and a stepdaughter that he helped raise, Ruby enjoys ballroom dancing and traveling all over the world.- IMDb Mini Biography By: woodyanders & Ashley West - The Rialto Report
- Owned a house in Yonkers, New York from the late 1970's to the mid-1980's that he used to let adult filmmakers make hardcore movies in.
- [on doing hardcore loops] They were quick, easy, and fun.
- [on Leonard Kirtman] I main thing I remember was just that he was very tight. Many of the crew were there to "gain experience" and weren't being paid anything, so he was really making films cheaply. He'd try and shoot several films over the course of one weekend.
- [on casting agent Dorothy Palmer] She was always uptight. She had a mainstream agency going on at the same time and she didn't want to admit to anyone that she was handling porn films too. But she clearly made a lot of money from the adult stuff.
- [reflecting on his career in porn] I was just trying to enjoy my life. It wasn't the money I was into, it was just the whole atmosphere, the whole environment of doing all this that I enjoyed. I was doing something unique and it was something I wanted to do so I enjoyed doing it. I realized a lot of people can't do this, and a lot of people won't do this. But to me it was fine. It was something I liked doing.
- [on Ron Jeremy] He was a friendly guy. But he was really good at promoting himself. He was a real promoter of himself.
- Teenage Deviate (1976) - 50
