Plenty of big news came out of this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, including the first clip for Watchmen Chapter I, Warner Bros. Animation's R-Rated adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic graphic novel.
That divisive CG animation style is on full display as Dr. Manhattan is welcomed to The Benny Anger Show. He's confronted by several angry audience members who demand the all-powerful superhero answer for the supposed role he may have played in the people he's crossed paths with over the years being diagnosed with cancer.
As all of this is happening, we see Nite Owl and Silk Spectre - in their civilian guises - fending off an attack from criminals. Everything we see looks like the graphic novel and, unsurprisingly, Zack Snyder's 2009 Watchmen movie (which itself was a near shot-for-shot remake of the source material).
With that in mind, we can't help but wonder what...

We all know the immortal question: "Who watches the Watchmen?" And twice over now, the answer has been, well, us. First with Zack Snyder's epic three-hour adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' seminal superhero satirising comic book run back in 2009, and again with Damon Lindelof's stunning 2019 sequelisation of the source material. Now, as Warner Bros. Animation prepares its to release two-part feature-length take on DC's alt-history classic — vaunted as the first truly faithful screen adaptation of the story — we're in the tank for a third watch of the Watchmen. Check out the new trailer for Watchmen Chapter 1 below:
Oh yeah, we're thinking Watchmen's back! From Titus Welliver's glass-garglingly gruff Rorschach narration, to the provocative 2D-3D hybridised recreation of Gibbons' iconic comic panels and colourist John Higgins' punchy palette, to the flashes of ultra-violent head-popping and our first proper look at/listen to Michael Cerveris' Dr.

Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”), Katee Sackhoff (“The Mandalorian”), Titus Welliver (“Lost”), Michael Cerveris (“The Gilded Age”) and Troy Baker (“The Last of Us”) are among the voice actors cast in “Watchmen Chapter I,” the new animated feature adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ seminal graphic novel. The two-part film — directed by Warner Bros. Animation veteran Brandon Vietti and adapted by comic J. The first trailer for Watchmen Chapter I has been released, and with that comes the full voice cast for Warner Bros. Animation's R-Rated adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic graphic novel.
It's also been confirmed today, courtesy of IGN (who have also shared cover art for the He release), that the movie will debut on Digital on August 13, with a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release following on August 27.
As with Zack Snyder's 2009 movie, it looks like the comic has come to life, begging the question of what this latest version will deliver that its live-action predecessor didn't. The Man of Steel helmer did take some liberties with the source material, though, so perhaps this version will be even more faithful.

Entertainment whispers, ‘No. The first part of an animated adaptation of the trio’s legendary story arrives on August 13, and today, we’ve got a Watchmen: Chapter 1 trailer to give fans a taste of the adventure to come. The Apple TV+ crime drama “City on Fire,” which wrapped up its 8-episode first season two months ago, will not be getting a second season, TheWrap has confirmed.
Based on the novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg, “City on Fire” wasn’t listed as a limited series. But the story shown in Season 1 covered the entire book, which means viewers won’t be stuck with a never-resolved cliffhanger similar to Hulu’s 2020 “High Fidelity” adaptation.
Set in 2003, the story follows the aftermath of the shooting of a young student in Central Park, New York city. The investigation uncovers ties to a series of fires, the Manhattan music scene, and a secretive and wealthy real estate family.
Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the show was executive produced by Schwartz and Savage alongside Lis Rowinski and Jesse Peretz.

Reading Garth Risk Hallberg’s City on Fire well after its initial publication hype, it isn’t always clear what generated that buzz in the first place.
At 900+ pages, it’s an unquestionably ambitious first novel, but Hallberg’s distinctive prose feels mostly in service of obfuscation. It’s a book in which all manner of structural and aesthetic trickiness — an occasionally evocative ’70s setting, faux Dickensian sprawl, flashbacks, flash-forwards, digressions in the form of a punk rock ‘zine and a fireworks-obsessed piece of long-form journalism — offer distraction from the run-of-the-mill mysteries that make up the core storyline. It’s full of vivid moments, but less full of effective twists or compelling characters.
Watching Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Apple TV+ adaptation of City on Fire, which arrives with no particular hype, it isn’t always clear what connection it even has to the book in the first place.

“The Wrong Missy” is a rom-com, but it’s really a ’90s Jim Carrey movie merged with one of those slob-goes-on-a-corporate-retreat comedies that has starred everyone from Bill Murray to Adam Sandler to Will Ferrell. Here’s what’s new about it: The hypomanic Jim Carrey figure is a woman — Missy, played by the wild-card comedian Lauren Lapkus, who in this movie is like a grenade of happy insanity tossed into the middle of every scene. Lapkus, who looks like a hellion version of Illeana Douglas, is best known for playing Susan Fischer on “Orange Is the New Black” and for one arc on “The Big Bang Theory” (she was also quite good in Zach Galifianakis’s “Between the Ferns”), and in “The Wrong Missy” she’s an antically wired, rubber-faced, this-is-your-brain-on-media satirist-anarchist.

"Missy is not who I thought she was... She's free, she's fun." Netflix has released the first official trailer for a comedy titled The Wrong Missy, the latest film from comedian / director Tyler Spindel. This is one of those ridiculous Hollywood-esque comedies with a concept that will either make you roll your eyes or laugh already. Tim has been texting a lady that might be the woman of his dreams. When things escalate fast, he invites her to a work retreat on Hawaii, realizing too late he mistakenly texted someone from a nightmare blind date - the "Wrong Missy". David Spade stars, with Lauren Lapkus as Missy, and a cast including Nick Swardson, Geoff Pierson, Jackie Sandler, Molly Sims, Sarah Chalke, Chris Witaske, and Rob Schneider. I thought they stopped making these absurd comedies! But there's always room for more. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Tyler Spindel's The Wrong Missy,...

Splitting Up Together‘s Lena and Martin are harried, suburban parents of three. The pair is no longer in love and planning to divorce. But because they owe more on their mortgage than their home is worth, and because divvying up parental duties is hard enough without adding new locations into the mix, Martin and Lena have decided to continue living together — though pursuing separate lives — while co-parenting their children.

The world will continue to teeter on The Brink for a while longer – HBO has handed out a second season order to the freshman political comedy, which was created by Roberto and Kim Benabib.
Jack Black, Tim Robbins and Pablo Schreiber topline the show, about how a geopolitical crisis affects three different men – a lowly Foreign Service officer (Black), the U.S. Secretary of State (Robbins) and a loose-cannon fighter pilot (Schreiber). Maribeth Monroe, Carla Gugino, Esai Morales, Geoff Pierson, Aasif Mandvi and Eric Ladin all co-star.
In its first season, The Brink was an imperfect but nonetheless watchable comedy that seemed to fall a little short of its potential, focusing on broad raunchy humor as opposed to legitimately toothy political satire. I wrote in my three-star review:
That the threat of nuclear Armageddon only accelerates the volume of dick jokes in The Brink’s war room is at one...

Armando Iannucci has left the building. Since mid-April, HBO has housed probably the best 90-minute comedy block on television, with the tech world satire of "Silicon Valley" transitioning into the political satire of "Veep" and closing with the sharp-eyed comedic advocacy of "Last Week Tonight with Jon Oliver." With those three comedies and even a lackluster-by-its-high-standards "Game of Thrones" season, HBO has had the Sunday quality TV crown on lockdown for months. But change is in the air. Iannucci, TV's keenest tweaker of governmental process, announced earlier this spring that he was stepping back from his showrunning responsibilities on "Veep." I've resisted panic, because the "Veep" creative bench is deep and I believe a solid foundation is in place to maintain much of the momentum beyond last Sunday's season finale. Sadly, the momentum of HBO's Sunday is in free fall and nowhere is that more evident than in the 10:30 comedy slot,...

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and the politicians are as useless as you’d expect. In HBO’s broad yet biting geopolitical satire The Brink, a military coup in Pakistan sends Secretary of State Walter Larson (Tim Robbins) and the rest of the President’s war room into crisis mode, but even the prospect of nuclear armageddon isn’t enough to stop them from lobbing crude insults across the table like verbal hand-grenades.
A sturdy companion piece for the network’s Veep, which shares The Brink‘s jaundiced views of world politics, the series is essentially a lower-brow Dr. Strangelove tackling today’s thick-headed foreign policy in the Middle East. Absurdist with a feather-light touch, it features a cast of characters for whom doomsday is at the push of a button – and whose fingers are perpetually hovering over said button,...

Dragon Seed: Lau & Loo’s Dissatisfying NYC Chinese Gang Saga
Martin Scorsese appears as executive producer on Andrew Lau and Andrew Loo’s Revenge of the Green Dragons, which is no surprise considering he famously remade Lau’s 2002 film Infernal Affairs as The Departed (2006). Featuring a gritty period portrait of gangland warfare in New Your City, it’s clearly the sort of material that Scorsese seems to be attracted to, and thematically, one could even say there are influences of titles like Mean Streets (1973) or Goodfellas (1990) in the mix, with slight homages here and there. But the similiarites are only skin deep. This saga, which is actually based on fact, feels too zany and forthright, any realistic human elements crushed beneath its predilection for exaggerated, dramatic performances and hyperviolence.
In 1983 Flushing, a young boy, Sonny, crosses into the Us without parents. Snakehead Mama (Eugenia Yuan), head of a Chinese...

HBO has delivered some terrific comedies over the years, from the quirky musical series Flight of the Conchords to biting political satire Veep, and with the cast that the premium cable network is pulling together for its upcoming comedy The Brink, there’s reason to believe HBO has another major hit on its hands.
Now, our anticipation has been raised with news that Watchmen actress Carla Gugino has joined the cast in a multi-episode arc. Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption), Jack Black (School of Rock) and Pablo Schreiber (Orange Is The New Black) all topline The Brink, which is described as “an epic dark comedy.”
As per Deadline: The Brink focuses on “a geopolitical crisis and its effect on three disparate and desperate men: U.S. Secretary of State Walter Hollander (Robbins); Alex Coppins (Black), a lowly Foreign Service officer; and Zeke Callahan (Pablo Schreiber), an ace Navy fighter pilot.

Ray Liotta, Justin Chon (Twilight), and Harry Shum, Jr. (Glee) star in the 1990s NYC-set action crime drama that’s executive produced by Martin Scorsese and set to debut next month at the Toronto Film Festival. Revenge of the Green Dragons is helmed by Andrew Lau & Andrew Loo and was inspired by Frederick Dannen’s New Yorker article chronicling Asian-American gang life in Queens, NY. It’s a reunion of sorts for Lau and Scorsese after the latter remade Lau’s Hong Kong crime pic Infernal Affairs into his own Oscar-winning 2006 film The Departed.
