Films with a local “charm”, that sit within a genre framework, and not straight drama, are the qualities the market is looking for, said a panel of international sales agents talking at the BFI London Film Festival today (October 14).
“Local specificity, that gives a story nuance, a charm, a distinctiveness, that still sits within a genre framework, still has universal accessibility,” were the factors the market is backing, said Sophie Green, head of acquisitions and development at the UK’s Bankside Films.
“Everybody is really championing the ‘local for global’,” she added.

I’ve got a freaky little trailer here for a new supernatural horror thriller called The Convent and the story is set in the 17th century during a time when being a witch was frowned upon.
This movie tells the story of a young woman who is falsely accused of being a witch and sent to be executed. However, she is saved from the execution and taken to a priory to repent her sins. While she is there, she discovers that something more sinister and evil is lurking there.
The main character, Persephone (Hannah Arterton) starts having horrific visions and she realizes that she won’t find salvation among the nuns because at this convent, nuns can’t be saved. They’re all evil!
Here’s the synopsis:
In the early 17th century, innocent young Persephone is falsely accused and put on trial for her life. Her fate seems sealed...

"Something horrible had happened here many years ago. This place is damned." Vertical Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for a horror film titled The Convent, which first premiered at FrightFest last year. Set in the 17th Century, the story is about a young woman who is saved from execution and sent to a priory to repent her sins but discovers a greater evil lies within. Persephone, played by Hannah Arterton, is plagued with terrifying visions upon arrival and soon realizes that it’s not salvation that awaits her but a battle for her very soul itself. The full cast includes Clare Higgins as the Reverend Mother, plus Michael Ironside, Rosie Day, Ciarán McMenamin, Dilan Gwyn, Grahame Fox, Freddy Carter, and Ryan Oliva. This does look scary as hell, with some freaky visuals in the trailer. Convents are always scary places. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Paul Hyett's The Convent,...

Belfast-based Causeway Pictures is launching its Irish Gothic label, which is focused on genre films that have inspiration from Irish legends.
Causeway MD Chris Patterson is teaming with writer/director Richard Crawford and writer/director Spence Wright to plan the ten-film slate to be produced over the next five years. The films will include Wright’s Vampires vs Leprechauns and the series Hy-Brasil set on a phantom island.
As Chris Patterson, explains, “Irish myths and legends are rich with wondrous and terrible creatures. The Irish Gothic banner will put them in front of a modern horror audience and create a lasting legacy that hopefully will become a genre of its own.”
The label kicked off last week in London at a stage reading, hosted by Northern Ireland Screen, of The Morrigan [pictured] by writer/director Richard Crawford.

On the 3rd and 4th of May the Empire cinema in Leicester Square will play host to the British Independent Film Festival and the Film Festival Guild have today announced the list of nominations for their annual awards.
With a keen understanding of the often London-centric nature of celebrations of UK Independent film both the feature films and the series of shorts are playing in eleven cinemas across the country over the month of May. This is a welcome state of affairs, one which the London Film Festival embraced last year with a similar nationwide programme, and it should enable the films and the filmmakers to reach a far wider audience.

The fifth series of Primeval is to finally air on ITV1. The sci-fi drama's most recent run will premiere on June 16, producers Impossible Pictures have confirmed. The show was renewed for two more series by ITV and digital channel Watch in 2009. Under the joint agreement, ITV had first broadcast rights on Primeval's fourth series, with Watch then being able to air the episodes at a later date. Watch would then air the fifth series first - which it did between May and June 2011 - with ITV having second run rights. The six latest episodes - starring Andrew-Lee Potts, Hannah Spearritt and Ciarán McMenamin - will now air on ITV1 over a year after their first digital broadcast. The future of the original Primeval is currently unclear with no further episodes (more)...

Thank goodness the wicked Helen did not bring about the end of mankind and civilization as we knew it. This meant the characters of ITV’s Primeval could come back for a fresh go-round. The show took a breather after the third season ended in 2009 and came back in seven and six episode arcs, making for abbreviated fourth and fifth seasons respectively and they are now available as a combined third volume in either standard DVD or, for the first time, as a Blu-ray option from BBC Video.
I find myself enjoying the series more for the characters than the writing, which either leaves holes as big as the anomalies the heroes deal with or are overly convoluted, leaving me wishing for a happy middle ground.

At the start of the fourth season of Primeval, we find it's been one year since the death of Johnson (Belinda Stewart-Wilson) and the Arc has been shaken by the long-term disappearance of Abby (Hannah Spearritt), Connor (Andrew Lee Potts) and team leader Danny (Jason Flemyng). The government has appointed entrepreneurial-scientist Philip Burton (Alexander Siddig) to take charge of the operation, with a brand new building and new team. Ex-soldier and zoologist Matt (Ciaran McMenamin), the highly efficient if unconventional Jess (Ruth Kearney), the mysterious Gideon (Anton Lesser), and anomaly-travelling Ethan (Jonathyn Byrne) all join the team, but are they ready for the challenges ahead?
As Connor and Abby finally escape the terrifying creatures of the Cretaceous to an uncertain welcome back at the Arc, Danny continues to fight his way through a Pliocene age Rift Valley, desperate to return to the team with a vital secret...

Chicago – We’re back with another DVD Round-up of recently released titles that may catch your attention when you’re browsing the DVD store this week. (Do they still have DVD stores?) This time, read this entire piece aloud in a British accent. Once again, these round-ups are designed as informative, to let you know about releases that might not get as much attention and what special features to expect if you pick them up. Having said that, this is a particularly strong round-up. Ricky Gervais, Camelot, and dinosaurs? You really can’t go wrong with any of these choices.
All three titles were released on January 10th, 2012.

Primeval will return to BBC America this November with six episodes beginning on Nov 12. The season stars Ciarán McMenamin, Andrew-Lee Potts, Hannah Spearritt, Ben Mansfield, Ruth Kearney, Ben Miller, Alexander Siddig, Janice Byrne and Ruth Bradley. When rips in time, called anomalies, started opening across the UK, dangerous creatures from the past and future began appearing in the most unexpected places, endangering lives and putting the whole of humanity at risk. A crack team of specialists were appointed to deal with these “creature incursions,” creating the Anomaly Research Center (Arc), which has now become privatized. This season an underground creature causes chaos to a city, a nuclear submarine encounters an anomaly in the sea and a raptor roams the same streets of the infamous murderer Spring Heeled Jack in Victorian London. As part of ITV’s co-financing deal with BBC America, Germany’s Pro Sieben and UKTV, that allowed the return of their axed sci-fi drama Primeval, it’s UKTV’s digital channel Watch who receive the British premiere of series 5. This results in mixed fortunes: loyal fans get new episodes mere months after series 4 ended on ITV, but it’s no longer accessible to everyone and isn’t being simulcast in HD. It also strikes me as odd that Watch have moved Primeval from its customary Saturday timeslot, as I suspect they could have lured a sizeable post-Doctor Who audience their way…

The opening titles of Primeval involve triangular shards of light with various dinosaurs and monsters emblazoned on them, synchronized with the appearance of each cast member’s credit. This speaks volumes about the show itself, which has always placed an emphasis on CGI beasties over characterization and acting.
Primeval suffered an extinction event in summer 2009, when ITV decided to cancel the expensive series in the face of strong ratings, because of financial difficulties. In a remarkable rescue, the show was revived by ITV agreeing to split production costs between three partners: UKTV (who’ll premiere series 5 on Watch), BBC America and the German broadcaster ProSieben. It’s great to see a TV show survive death thanks to some business creativity, to benefit the millions who enjoy it, but Primeval is unfortunately a series that remains more of a special-effects showreel than a compelling action drama.

ITV have put five short webisodes for Primeval online, ahead of Season 4's New Year’s Day premiere. The popular time-travelling dinosaur show succumbed to the all-too-frequent scourge of cancellation after three UK seasons due to financial concerns, but then was recommissioned for Seasons 4 and 5 as an international co-production after fan outcry. (However, in the Us, Seasons 1 and 2 were combined to give one 13-episode ‘season’, so this will probably be treated as the third ‘season’.)
Starting off with interviews with two of the remaining (i.e. not dead, resigned or missing) characters (Ben Miller's James Lester and Ben Mansfield's Captain Becker) is a cool way of recapping the events so far. The first webisode goes on to show recruitment interviews with two new members of the team, Matt Anderson (Ciarán McMenamin) and Jess Parker (Ruth Kearney). The businessman and scientist Philip Burton (Star Trek: DS9's Alexander Siddig) is also introduced later on.

'Primeval' is to return for a fourth and fifth series. The sci-fi drama - which follows a group of scientists as they battle prehistoric creatures - has been commissioned to return to TV screens in 2011 as part of a joint venture between ITV1 and UKTV. Viewers will see three new characters join the cast - Matt (Ciaran McMenamin), Jess (Ruth Kearney) and Captain Becker (Ben Mansfield) - with stars Connor (Andrew-Lee Potts) and Abby (Hannah Spearritt) returning as ''very different'' people after getting stuck in the past at the end of series three. Hannah explained: ''Connor and Abby are very different people, but ..

Primeval producer Tim Bradley has revealed details of the two new characters joining the show's regular cast. He explained to SFX that field leader Matt Anderson (Ciaran McMenamin) would be "an animal expert". "He's the sort of guy who's wrestled tigers in the jungle, but also understands the biology of them too," said Bradley. "He knows how to track a creature without killing it and like [former leader] Nick Cutter, he has the [knowledge of] science." (more)...

Colm McCarthy's Outcast is a low-budget British genre production that manages to be visually attractive, relatively naturalistic and features some wonderfully deft plotting which, while relatively predictable, still carries a refreshing level of moral ambiguity. It treats its fantasy milieu (cribbing from legends of the Sidhe, the ancient race of Gaelic folklore) as Serious Business yet it never appears particularly melodramatic or campy, which is a minor triumph all by itself.
Part thriller, part horror, part psychodrama, Outcast is far from perfect, but it's the kind of debut that could have fallen horribly flat and McCarthy deserves to be applauded for holding it all together.
Kate Dickie and Niall Bruton play Mary and Fergal, a mother and son arriving at a run-down housing estate where it becomes apparent they're in hiding from people who want to do them both harm. Liam (Ciarán McMenamin) and Cathal (James Nesbitt) are the hunters on their trail,...

We’re two months into a barely post-apocalyptic Ireland. The cause is an unexplained lack of electricity, the setting is very rural, and the plot is concerned with the quick, yet inevitable decline of the unprepared into the unimaginable. The times they are a-changin’.
Unlike the usual post-apocalyptic fare in which the hero sets off on some real or imagined quest against a backdrop of horror, in One Hundred Mornings our ineffectual characters basically sit around and wait for the shockwaves of the electrical meltdown to come to them. And come they do. And, sort of surprisingly, in pretty well the expected ways. However, it’s both the upside and the downside of 100M that we experience the physical and emotional toll of this social change not through glorious shots of urban abandonment and carnage,...

Slamdance, which runs concurrently with Park City’s Sundance Film Festival, has announced its 2010 line-up, and there are several choices that look to make genre fans sit up and take notice.
Variety provided the names of the ten narrative and eight documentary feature films that are, in the spirit of the fest’s motto, “by filmmakers, for filmmakers.” Although not all of them are horror related, in the interest of keeping you guys fully informed on all the latest indie happenings (and because some of the docs just sound so damn interesting with topics like William Burroughs and Bolivian women wrestlers!), the full list follows:
Narrative Competition:
Cummings Farm (Andrew Drazek) - Comedy about three couples who try group sex at a lakeside strawberry farm, naively hoping it will lead to enlightenment; with Laura Silverman.
Drones (Amber Benson & Adam Busch) - A man discovers a universal threat to his life,...

What's that? You can't wait to hear about the Irish post apocalyptic film One Hundred Mornings? Well you don't have to because we already have a review of it right here! Our own Alan Maxwell called it an "uncomfortably realistic vision of the breakdown of society." Yeah, it's good.
So continuing, part of the Slamdance lineup has been announced and it's got quite a few films we've featured.
Want something horrible in the forest? How about YellowBrickRoad?
Or maybe some William Burroughs? How about William S Burroughs: A Man Within?
Yup, the lineup for one of my favorite festivals is looking mighty fine as usual, and we'll be bringing you more shortly.
Partial lineup after the break!

The competitive lineup for the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival (of which Fangoria is a media sponsor) has been revealed via an announcement on Variety. "As in years past, competing films are by first-time feature directors working with limited budgets and without domestic theatrical distribution in place. Among the 18 titles, 11 are world premieres." the trade reports.
Fright fans may recall that Oren Peli's recent hit Paranormal Activity played the fest in 2008. As always, Slamdance will run side-by-side with the Sundance Film Fest in Park City Utah, January 21-28, 2010. While there's plenty of genre fare to be seen, we've got the entire list of films for you to browse below.

At a recent screening of Richard Jobson's recession-tinged Scottish chase thriller New Town Killers, the director had to point out that since people all over the world losing their livelihoods was a bad thing, there was nothing "lucky" about the seemingly providential timing of the film's release. One suspects that if Irishman Conor Horgan's new feature gets a wide release he may have to make a similar statement as, with the recession in full swing and now accompanied by a global flu pandemic, he delivers us an uncomfortably realistic vision of the breakdown of society.
The worst seems to have already happened when the film opens. We don't know when (though it has obviously happened recently) or how but there is no doubt that this is not a pleasant future.

I have higher hopes for this then the similarly themed (and terrible) 9/Tenths. Written and directed by Conor Horgan and starring Rory Keenan, Ciarán McMenamin, Kelly Campbell, and Alex Reid, I don't have much on the film and the production company behind it isn't giving us anything yet, but I do know that it's having it's world premier on July 11th in Galway. Anyone going to be there?
Two couples hide out in a remote holiday home, trying to escape the consequences of a breakdown of society. Their relationships deteriorate as supplies grow scarce and they face increasing threats from hungry outsiders. In order to increase their chances of survival, they each have to make choices they never imagined would confront them.
That's all for now folks..
