A native Minnesotan, Joel McKinnon Miller started out studying opera and theatre at University of Minnesota-Duluth. After college, he joined John Houseman's The Acting Company, a classical theatre touring company based in New York City where he spent 3 years (1984-87) touring the US. He then performed Off-Broadway and in regional theatre.
Joel made his television debut in 1991 on CBS with Murphy Brown. His numerous television credits include The X-Files (1999), Curb Your Enthusiasm (2001), Everybody Loves Raymond (2005) and American Horror Story (2011). Features include The Truman Show (1998), Friday After Next (2002) and Super 8 (2011).
From (2006-2011) Joel played Don Embry on the HBO series Big Love. His most recognizable role to date, however, was playing Detective Norm Scully for 8 seasons on the NBC hit series Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Joel's next project, The Staircase, with Colin Firth, Toni Collette and Juliette Binoche comes out soon on HBOMax.
