Controversial drama “Nitram” dominated the prizes at the Australian Academy of Cinema & Television Arts (Aacta) film awards on Wednesday. Leaving little room for celebration of any other achievement in the past year, “Nitram” swept to eight awards.
These included the most major prizes — best film, best directing and best original screenplay — as well as all four acting prizes.
The film painstakingly depicts the build-up to a real-life mass shooting that took place in Tasmania. Many people had questioned whether the events were too painful to be retold and whether making a film would make a hero of the perpetrator. “Nitram” deflected those criticisms by spelling the shooter’s name backwards and by avoiding any on-screen violence.
“Nitram” premiered in competition in Cannes in July and won the lucrative top prize at August’s CinefestOZ festival. It is now streaming on Stan, the Ott that was a backer of the project.

An analyst predicted that "Call of Duty: Black Ops" pre-orders might out-perform "Modern Warfare 2," even if the game's long-term sales fell short of setting another industry record. That was several months ago, however, and GameStop has now expressed similar expectations. In publicizing a sweepstakes tied to their orders, the big retailer didn't cite specific numbers but did discuss where the game is tracking.
"GameStop is tracking to all-time, record reservations on 'Call of Duty: Black Ops,'" GameStop merchandising Svp Bob McKenzie said in a press release. "We are ahead of where we were with 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2' last year, which previously set the industry standard".
It would be nice to see some hard data with that claim, and McKenzie's statement came within the context of drumming new pre-orders for his company's promotion. Even if the statement was made with the intention of getting it to become a self-fulfilling prophecy,...

So, suppose you're a successful comedy show with two tongue-in-cheek characters deliberately made as stereotypical as possible. They become wildly popular beyond explanation. What do you do with Bob & Doug McKenzie? Give them Shakespeare and make a movie, of course! Hamlet meets hosers in Strange Brew, and it's been many years since I saw it last. I recall copious drinking, Three Stooges-esque antics, and no end of "eh"s. So, since I'd rather do anything than my readings for Public Law, let's get this real-time review going!
Just before I hit "play" on this netbook, a quick word about the characters, without getting too deep into their Sctv appearances. Bob & Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) are unemployed beer-drinking hosers living at home with their parents. Their portrayal of dim-witted adult brothers seems to have hit a resonant note in Canada and abroad, since they reprised their relationship...

The key to a good mock rock-umentary is that you must Love your subject. Christopher Guest loves folk music. Tenacious D (along with Guest and Rob Reiner) love metal. The Lonely Island loves hip hop and R&B. Bret Mckenzie and Jemaine Clement love pop music in general. The love translates into what’s most important: the songs are actually good. I’m not convinced the creative team behind Gemini Rising knows this because it’s lacking in both love of its subject matter and music. The spoofed genre this time around is progressive rock, or prog-rock. In 1974, our fictional band, Gemini Rising, went into the studio to record their second album. Then, evidently, disappeared (whether they hooked up with Eddie and the Cruisers remains to be seen). We pick up with the band brain-storming in the woods somewhere with their manager Bernie Breck. They quickly hit the studio, but...
