Exclusive: As Deadline reported exclusively in February, the upcoming sixth season of Netflix’s Virgin River, which focuses on Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s (Martin Henderson) nuptials, will also feature Mel’s late mother Sarah and biological father, Everett, in flashbacks. We can now reveal that Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr have been cast in the roles and offer first-look images of them as Sarah and Everett in Season 6.
The recurring characters are being introduced as Netflix is exploring an expansion of the Virgin River universe with a prequel following Sarah and Everett’s origin story.
Seen in flashbacks mostly set in or around 1972, Sarah (Rothe) is a witty, free spirit from the big city with an ardent passion for activism, and trying to avoid the conventional/traditional life of a young woman in the ’70s. Always up for an adventure,...

What is it about Virgin River that keeps Netflix users coming back for more, making it one of the most popular shows on the streaming service?
Some might say it's the laid-back vibe that pervades the titular Northern California town. Some will say it's the romantic intrigue and drama that intertwines each storyline. Well, we'd say it's the talented ensemble cast who never fail to impress with their chemistry, dynamism and commitment to the story.
And one of the undisputed favourites for Virgin River fans is Martin Henderson, who portrays Jack Sheridan. The 49-year-old heartthrob's charm and humble nature make the hearts of almost every viewer beat faster, but now Henderson's career is about to take a drastic turn, as from Season 6 he will not only be responsible for playing the role of Jack, but for other duties as well.
Without further ado, let's take a look at what...

For the 15th anniversary of the "Battlestar Galactica" finale, I spoke with several of the show's writers and actors for an inside look at how it reached that conclusion. One of them was David Eick, the series' co-creator (with Ronald D. Moore). I asked the man who resurrected "Galactica" out of its campy 1970s roots why attempts to keep the franchise going faltered.
You see, "Battlestar" hadn't even been finished a year when a prequel spin-off debuted: "Caprica," an ensemble drama set more than 50 years before the series on the eponymous planet (one of the 12 colonies razed by the robotic Cylons at the outset of "Battlestar Galactica"). The series debuted in January 2010 and wrapped that November after a single, 19-episode first season -- its planned multi-year run aborted by low ratings.
Next, Eick and co. pivoted with "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome," a second prequel (but after "Caprica") set during the first human/Cylon war.

Keep reading for five questions we’re hoping are answered when Virgin River Season 5 Part 2 drops Nov. 30 on Netflix.

The re-imagined "Battlestar Galactica" series, developed by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, hit our screens in 2003. The ongoing story would eventually end in 2009, having picked up several accolades -- including winning Emmys and Hugo awards -- along the way. Telling the tale of the titular capital ship and its ragtag fleet of civilians and military personnel, "Battlestar Galactica" follows the last remnants of humanity fleeing their robotic race (and humans' former slaves), the Cylons. In an era obsessed with grim and gritty reboots, "Battlestar Galactica" stood out as a television series that honored the original series and charted brave new territory, too.
Moore and Eick's series was as much a study of theology as it was a military drama with detailed and complex character stories. Throughout the Battlestar's long journey to find a new home, the show would create some of the most memorable sci-fi television episodes to date.

Director Neill Blomkamp has given us a unique mixture of films, one great, one terrible and one right down the middle. District 9 was a sharp, socially conscious horror flick that achieved "instant classic" status. Elysium was an effective riff on class warfare. And Chappie lacked heart.
So where does Demonic rank among Blomkamp's oeuvre? The generic title would have you believe this is a generic movie, which it is. Despite moments of indelible craft, Demonic is closer to Chappie than District 9. The film is a mashup of demons, possessions, metaphors and sanatoriums that ends up being rather dull, uninspired.
The best thing the film has going for it is its heady concept, the idea that you can enter someone else's dreams through a virtual headset. The virtual world adds a kick to Blomkamp's script--the real-world portions can't help but feel flat by comparison, and you spend most the...

With his new film “Demonic,” writer-director Neill Blomkamp has done something he’s never done before: He’s made a feature film that’s almost completely pointless.
The man behind “District 9,” “Elysium,” and “Chappie” has never been particularly subtle about his allegories, whether the films are acclaimed or not. So far he’s used sci-fi trappings to explore the evils of apartheid and health care, and to address at least some of the bigger questions about artificial intelligence. They’re usually big swings, the sci-fi films of Neill Blomkamp, so it’s hard to begrudge him for going for a bunt this time.
But “Demonic” isn’t just a low-budget supernatural–sci-fi thriller; it’s also a shallow one, a boring one, a poorly conceived one — and the characters stink too. It’s a horror movie with no ideas and only half a scare. It’s a sci-fi movie...

Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi work finds its chief pleasures as a cinema of the hyperreal. Aliens, robots, and impossibly cool implements of destruction exist fifteen minutes into the future, covered in the grime and grit and chipped imperfection of used objects, in alternate worlds as beholden to the violence of material inequity as our own. Anderson Cooper (playing himself) reveals speculative history as breaking news coverage. The fantastically imaginary becomes physically palpable. Blomkamp’s chief aesthetic guideposts are visual media’s pinnacles of “you are there” immediacy: cinema verité, video games, documentary. His cinema is vividly externalized, rife with world-building, sprawling in scope, and rooted in a firm sense of the material.
Implication that Demonic may not play to his strengths comes with the opening scene. In an economically cut series of crawling, low-angle handheld shots, uncannily perfect symmetrical compositions, and other dream sequence clichés, a woman (Carly Pope) wanders...

Technology has always been the dominant creative force behind the films of Neill Blomkamp, a former special effects artist whose “what if Apartheid, but aliens?” metaphor “District 9” earned him a Best Picture nomination before he was 30, whose dopey Matt Damon vehicle “Elysium” took class warfare to intergalactic levels, and whose Twitter-famous “Chappie” — perhaps the best movie ever made about a psychotically obnoxious police robot being captured and reprogrammed by the South African rap group Die Antwoord — forever redefined people’s ability to identify Chappie.
And yet, despite those increasingly ridiculous examples, Blomkamp’s impetus to let digital tools drive his storytelling has never been more transparent or contrived than it is in his Doa new horror film “Demonic,” which leans on three sequences created with volumetric capture (described by Blomkamp as a kind of three-dimensional video system through which the actors are simultaneously recorded with 260 cameras and then...

There’s little false advertising to “Love, Guaranteed,” a romantic comedy about true love and the seemingly overblown promises of online dating. The shared fate of Susan Whitaker and Nick Evans — played by Rachel Leigh Cook and Damon Wayans Jr. — is all but assured by director Mark Steven Johnson’s pretty much by-the-numbers take. The question isn’t “Will they wind up together?” It’s more of a “how they will wind up together” proposition. Even with some nicely understated moments from the leads, the Netflix film is decidedly slight, easy-on-the-noggin entertainment.
Susan Whitaker has her own shingle as an attorney. Nick is a physical therapist at a rehab center. How others feel about each of them — her employees, his patients — attests to the fact they are decent people. When Nick first seeks out Susan’s services for a lawsuit, she has her doubts. Still, her penchant for turning paying...

By depicting issues of racism and bigotry in pre-apartheid South Africa, “Sew Winter to My Skin” writer and director Jahmil X.T. Qubeka said he wants to portray everything that “make(s) us the same in humanity, rather than the things that set us apart.”
Following a screening of the 2018 film, South Africa’s Oscar foreign race entry, Qubeka participated in a Q&A moderated by TheWrap CEO and founder Sharon Waxman. Based on true events, “Sew Winter to My Skin” is a Western-style film that follows the violent and emotional last days leading up to South African outlaw John Kepe’s execution in June 1952. Kepe (Ezra Mabengeza), the self-proclaimed “Samson of Boschberg,” was hung for a string of crimes including theft and the murder of a farmworker.

The admirable ambition to frame the film with all the iconoclastic, outlaw verve of its rogue antihero is both the making and the unmaking of “Sew the Winter to my Skin,” the proto-Western sophomore feature from rising South African powerhouse Jahmil X.T. Qubeka. As shown in his well-received noir-indebted debut “Of Good Report,” Qubeka has filmmaking energy to burn, but this time it sparks and flares over much broadened horizons — often literally, in the form of returning Dp Jonathan Kovel’s striking landscape photography, featuring vistas so huge they have visibly different weather on one side than the other.
But the narrative enlargement is less successful: While the project of infusing a local legend with grandly cinematic, mythic status is a worthy one, the film can’t quite get out of its own way, and the result is incoherently at odds with itself, with two outsized personalities — the hero John...

The new Syfy series premieres this October, but before it does, you can get an idea of the ghoulish encounters to come in a new trailer featuring Vincent D'Onofrio, Kim Coates, and Meat Loaf Aday.

Set to premiere this fall is Syfy’s new paranormal-themed series, Ghost Wars, which boasts an incredible ensemble that includes Vincent D’Onofrio, Kim Coates, Meat Loaf, Avan Jogia, and Kandyse McClure. While in San Diego last weekend at Comic-Con, Daily Dead spoke briefly with two of Ghost Wars’ co-stars, and veteran actors, Vincent D’Onofrio and Meat Loaf. The duo discussed the big appeal of joining the cast of Ghost Wars, and Meat Loaf also reminisced about his time collaborating with Dario Argento for his episode of Masters of Horror, entitled "Pelts."
So, coming into the show, what was the biggest appeal for you guys? Was it the different genre elements, the characters, or the fact that it was something different?
Meat Loaf: The reason that I came into the show is because when I got sent the script, the writing of Simon Barry, who I was a huge fan of already,...

It seems like, from the trailer, this is a very much different approach to the supernatural that a lot of other shows are doing or have done in the past. Can you talk about the challenges of taking on a story like this and some of your inspirations behind Ghost Wars?

The real mystery is how Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum‘s Careful What You Wish For got itself a theatrical release in the first place — no matter how limited. I’m not surprised Starz Digital is handling distribution, though, since it feels exactly like a late night pay cable ticket sanitized to an R-rating for lustful eroticism rather than actual chemistry, nudity, or plausibility. Sometimes thrillers of the “youthful stalker hits the sexual jackpot” variety can at least be entertaining in an ironic way, but that’s unfortunately not the case here. In fact, Chris Frisina‘s script is smart enough with its inevitable murder and ensuing insurance case to make us believe the film was produced with dramatic eyes and artistic hope. Alas, it ultimately falls short.

If you've ever watched an “adult” movie, you know of the contrived situations, the cheesy soundtrack, and the gasping bodies. You'd laugh if a lowly movie critic complained of that movie's plot inconsistencies, its horrible acting, or the needless dialogue. So I won't blame you if you laugh while I tell you the many ways in which Nick Jonas's new film, the self-styled erotic thriller Careful What You Wish For, is not much more than glorified softcore. Which is to say that you may very well really enjoy seeing it. I certainly did.
The movie is a straight-up remake of the 1980s cult classic Body Heat, starring William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. Jonas, in all his heartthrob, beefcake glory, plays starry-eyed youth Doug (“Douggie”) Martin, who falls hard for an older woman, his neighbor's attractive wife Lena, played by the impossibly hot model Isabel Lucas. "Moving Parts," a film by Trinidad-based, American director, Emilie Upczak, whose crowdfunding campaign has only 11 days to go, is a story about two women from two opposite corners of the world brought together through circumstances beyond their control. Although set in the Caribbean, the film is globally relevant as it focuses on the issue of human trafficking.
“Moving Parts takes a fictional look at a very real issue”, Upczak said. “The film’s protagonist Zhenzhen, is a Chinese immigrant who is smuggled into Trinidad to be with her brother Wei following the death of their father. A tragic event leaves Zhenzhen vulnerable and only through the help of a neighboring art gallerist Evelyn and the restaurant’s Cook, does she have a chance at life”.
Emilie Upczak is a filmmaker and festival programmer specifically interested in ritual practice and sexual politics. These interests were first sparked after she spent two-years traveling throughout Southeast Asia, where she encountered numerous religious practices and worked as an escort in a hostess club in Tokyo. Since then, Emilie has produced short films and experimental video installations. Most recently, she was the Creative Director of the trinidad+tobago film festival in charge of the Caribbean Film Mart and Caribbean Film Database.
“We decided to crowd-fund the film in order to build our core audience and to engage individuals in our fundraising process,” she said. “We have been successful in engaging local government support and now we are turning to private sector and individuals”.
The film has been in development for two years and is now in the pre-production stage. Principal photography is set to begin in the Spring with a filming schedule of one month. One of the unique facets of the film is the female roster of most heads of departments. This line up includes, DoP Nancy Schreiber, Consulting Producer Annabelle Mullen, First Assistant Director Roma Zachemba, Co-Producers Rhonda Chan Soo and Rhian Vialva, Production Designer Shannon Alonzo and PR/Social Media Aurora Herrera.
Upczak noted, “I feel very strongly about having this film made by women and also by women primarily from the Caribbean.”
The cast includes Canadian actresses Valerie Tian known for her role as Su-Chin in "Juno" and Burns in "21 Jumpstreet" and Kandyse McClure known for her role as Officer Anastasia Dualla in "Battlestar Galactica."
You can support "Moving Pats" via its Kickstarter campaign https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/381237657/moving-parts?token=9ec81861...

Sometimes, you know with one shot, one line, one choice. With "Seventh Son," it happened for me the moment Jeff Bridges opened his mouth. He's made a choice here that takes him further down that Rooster Cogburny RIPDy road with that gravel voice mush mouth thing, and it's genuinely ill-advised. It is embarrassing. It's like someone's grandfather wandered onto the set, and no one has the heart to tell him he's not in the movie. He is Grandalf. And it does not work. Now, if everything else about "Seventh Son" was exemplary, there's a chance it wouldn't matter, or there's a chance it might make the Bridges performance somehow work better in context. But this is tone-deaf train crash from start to finish, cast poorly, shot in a way that might as well include title cards reading "Meanwhile, On A Soundstage" at the start of some scenes, and packed with...

Nathan and Audrey's relationship moves up a level in this week's eventful Haven. Here's Rachael's review...
This review contains spoilers.
4.7 Lay Me Down
This week’s episode of Haven finally delivered on oh, so many things. Not least of all was a Trouble that was actually relevant to the emotional plot! It was great to see Kandyse McClure cameo as the Troubled dreamer who was comfortable with her Trouble - even if it had been mutated somehow. Penikett explained that his character was only meant to be in a couple of episodes, but the part was expanded by the writers for him. Olmos suggested that the audience should watch BSG from start to finish and following on from the final scene should watch the film Blade Runner,...
