Pursued by Cassie Elliott (Wiley), a highly-skilled CIA agent, along with MI6 and a network of traffickers, Max and Mohammed find themselves, for once, having to be the good guys.
The show, from Gangs of London producer Pulse Films, is written by Gregory Burke (‘71, Entebbe, Rebus) and directed by Shariff Korver (Temple, Do Not Hesitate).

“The Woman King,” a historical epic starring Viola Davis, will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The TriStar Pictures release centers on the Agojie, an all-female military regiment tasked with protecting the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s. These fighters inspired the Dora Milaje bodyguards that appear in the Black Panther comics and films, and also were depicted in Werner Herzog’s “Cobra Verde,” a fever trip of a flick.
Instead of unveiling its lineup all at once, TIFF has favored a piecemeal approach this time. It has already announced that the likes of Billy Eichner’s rom-com “Bros” and “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” will play at the festival and other Oscar hopefuls are expected to screen in Canada.

Abacus Media Rights has clinched rapid sales in more than half the world’s major territories on “Killing Escobar,” proving the enduring market appeal of one of Latin America’s most powerful IPs, Pablo Escobar – if producers find a new and unique way into his story.
In the case of “Killing Escobar,” this comes via the extraordinary true account of Scottish mercenary and ex-Sas operative Peter McAleese who was hired by the notorious Cali Cartel to recruit and lead a 12-man team of ex-special forces commandos to assassinate the world’s biggest drug baron, Pablo Escobar.
The hit is planned at the one place Escobar thinks he is safe: his Hacienda Nápoles luxury retreat near Medellín whose attractions included an African wildlife zoo and one of Al Capone’s automobiles.
Narrated by McAleese himself, and driven by cinema-standard reconstruction of the actual nerve-biting mission, “Killing Escobar” mixes a combat...

Mercenaries Peter McAleese and David Tomkins tell the story and backstory behind their contract on the Colombian kingpin
Here’s a documentary that shines a light on squalid corner of British post-imperial legacy: the batches of mercenaries – largely former military personnel – who roamed the world’s trouble spots in the 70s and 80s, killing for hire in numerous civil conflicts in Africa and Latin America.
The film focuses on an escapade that is – ethically speaking – a little less murky than cold war Africa: a plot to assassinate the super-powerful Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar in the late 1980s. However, since it was organised at the behest of another super-powerful Colombian drug lord, any claims to the moral high ground are not really supportable.

A new feature documentary has secured exclusive access to the story of Peter McAleese, the Scottish mercenary and ex-Sas operative who was hired by a Colombian drug cartel to assassinate drug baron Pablo Escobar.
Produced by Glasgow-based Two Rivers Media and Salon Pictures, the producers of David Bowie film “Stardust,” “Killing Escobar” is told in McAleese’s own words and features never-before-seen footage of his 1989 Colombian mission. The doc also reveals how McAleese’s violent upbringing in Glasgow, Sas training and experience as a mercenary in Africa led him to take on the daring — and seemingly suicidal — assignment.
Commissioned by BBC Scotland, the film is backed by fledgling distributor Abacus Media Rights, who hold international distribution rights, as well as The National Lottery through Screen Scotland. Directed by award-winning filmmaker David Whitney, the film will bow at the Glasgow Film Festival on March 7 and air on BBC Scotland later this year.

Vertical Entertainment to release in North America.
The Us District Court for the Central District of California has ruled in favour of Voltage Pictures and thrown out a copyright infringement case concerning The Professor And The Madman starring Mel Gibson and Sean Penn.
Writer-director Farhad Safinia, who wrote a revision in 2007 of a 2001 screenplay, brought a suit in which he claimed he had signed an agreement with an affiliate of Mel Gibson’s Icon Productions to write the screenplay and that all work he performed related to the film would constitute a “work made for hire” under the Us Copyright Act.

Mel Gibson’s ‘The Professor And The Madman’ To Get Theatrical Release Via Vertical After Legal Fight
Exclusive: The Mel Gibson-Sean Penn period film The Professor and the Madman will be getting a theatrical release with Vertical Entertainment after the distributor took U.S. rights to the Voltage Pictures production. A theatrical release is planned for the second quarter of this year.
Gibson and his Icon Productions had tried to block the release of the movie, which is based on Simon Winchester’s book about the origins of the Oxford English Dictionary. This was spurred by a disagreement with Voltage CEO Nicolas Chartier over the pic’s shooting location. Gibson and director Farhad Safinia wanted key scenes shot in Oxford, England instead of Trinity College in Dublin. Voltage argued the pic was already over budget and behind schedule, with Gibson and Safinia reportedly walking off the pic.

Following on from Sean Penn’s frankly bizarre Oscars comments last night, Open Road Films has dropped a new trailer for his upcoming action thriller, The Gunman. Was the decision to unleash the preview to perhaps capitalize on the actor’s oddball antics, or simply because it opens in theaters next month? Whatever the reason, an exciting new preview is now online for your viewing pleasure.
As previous teasers have pointed out – the film is directed by Taken‘s Pierre Morel. That admission appears to serve as a badge of merit, to prove that the director’s latest venture will be equally as badass. And by the looks of things, that statement is entirely accurate. Running at just over a minute, it’s a fast-paced tease with a booming score and plenty of explosions.

Sean Penn may have starred in several more dramatic pictures of late – The Tree of Life, Gangster Squad and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, for instance — but for the actor’s next outing, the Academy award winner is set to go full Liam Nesson. That’s because Penn’s next venture will be headlining Pierre Morel’s The Gunman, which recently debuted an explosive new trailer.
We reference Liam Nesson’s foray into the action genre because Morel just so happens to be the director behind Taken, though going off of this latest clip, it appears as though The Gunman is venturing down a considerably different path. For the film, Penn will play the part of James Terrier, a former military ops specialist suffering from Ptsd who sets out to clear his name.
Perhaps what separates The Gunman from its generic action contemporaries is the movie’s eye-catching cast,...

In "The Gunman," Penn stars as a Ptsd-afflicted special forces vet who finds himself on the run from London to Barcelona after being falsely accused of a crime. Penn and Silver also produced the film along with Andrew Rona and executive producers Adrian Guerra and Peter McAleese. I have always been a fan of Frank Langella. He was in one of my guilty pleasures as a horror fan, Brainscan. Go ahead, judge me.
From the Variety article:
Frank Langella has been set to star with Liam Neeson, January Jones and Diane Kruger in Unknown White Male, the Dark Castle thriller.
Neeson plays a man who awakens from a coma to find somebody else has assumed his identity. Langella plays Cole, who comes forward as the coma guy’s colleague and gets involved as he tries to reclaim his identity.
Shooting starts January in Berlin, with Warner Bros. distributing. Joel Silver produces with Leonard Goldberg and Andrew Rona. Steve Richards, Sarah Meyer and Peter McAleese are exec producers.
One thing that the article doesn’t mention is that Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan & House Of Wax) will be directing his third film for Dark Castle Films.

Doomsday
If mankind ever indeed does go to hell in the future, it's less likely to be because of alien invasions, natural catastrophes or killer viruses than an overdose of postapocalyptic sci-fi thrillers, the latest example of which is this cheesy entry from director-screenwriter Neil Marshall. Squandering the estimable cinematic credibility the filmmaker garnered with his last effort, the spooky horror film The Descent, Doomsday comes all too close to approximating its title.
Rhona Mitra, channeling such genre predecessors as Sigourney Weaver, Angelina Jolie and Kate Beckinsale, plays the tough-as-nails heroine, the one-eyed Eden Sinclair. Set in the not-too-distant future, the story concerns Eden and her ragtag crew of mercenaries as they are enlisted by the British government to enter a walled-off Scotland that has been quarantined ever since the onset of a deadly plague.
There, they must search for a cure for the disease, which has unfortunately infected the rest of Britain. It presumably lies in the hands of a proverbial mad scientist (Malcolm McDowell, a long way from his Kubrick glory days) ensconced in a remote castle.
Along the way, the team must deal with rampaging gangs of punk-style cannibals led by a Mohawk-haired savage with the unlikely name of Sol (Craig Conway).
The film includes the usual unending series of high-speed chases and brutal fight scenes of every variation imaginable, all filmed in the sort of hyper-kinetic style by now endemic to these witless genre efforts.
The violence is very much of the R-rated variety, with numerous body parts being blown or shot off, several scenes of immolation and cannibalism and, to add insult to injury, a poor bunny rabbit being blown to smithereens.
Perhaps the film's most outlandish sequence depicts a sort of rave enjoyed by the cannibals, seemingly designed by the folks at Cirque du Soleil. (It was a fun touch, admittedly, to have them dancing to a song recorded by Fine Young Cannibals).
Mitra, clad in the requisite tight, sexy outfits, conveys a suitable toughness but little in the way of personality, while such distinguished British actors as Bob Hoskins and Adrian Lester dutifully show up to collect their paychecks.
Catchphrase alert: Two new standards that might possibly emerge if the film is successful are Same shit, different era and "If you're hungry, here's a piece of your friend," both uttered by the stoic heroine.

Lionsgate U.K. to unleash 'Flood'
LONDON -- U.K. based production house Power has inked a deal with Lionsgate U.K. to secure a theatrical release for Flood, the company's first foray into movie production, it announced Thursday.
The movie will air on commercial net ITV early next year after Lionsgate has rolled it out on a limited release in central London, a Power spokesperson said.
The cast of the $30 million movie, directed by Tony Mitchell, includes Robert Carlyle, Jessalyn Gilsi, David Suchet and Joanne Whalley.
Flood, scripted by Power founder Justin Bodle and Matthew Cope, is based on the book of the same name by Richard Doyle and produced by Bodle and independent producer Peter McAleese. It details the story of the aftermath of a tidal wave that swamps the British capital.
Produced by Power in association with South Africa's Moonlighting Films and Canada's Muse Entertainment Enterprises, Flood was shot last year on location in London and South Africa.
