Jean-Pierre Marielle played in more than 100 films Photo: Unifrance
The death of veteran French cinema and theatre actor Jean-Pierre Marielle, at the age of 87, leaves another gap in the group who became known as “the band of the Conservatoire” whose ranks included his late life-long friend Jean Rochefort, as well as Claude Rich and Jean-Paul Belmondo.
He played in more than 100 films, both comic and tragic, with such directors as Michel Audiard, Bértrand Blier, Claude Sautet, Bértrand Tavernier, Claude Miller and Alain Corneau for whom memorably he created the role of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe (opposite Gérard Depardieu) as the musician Marin Marais in All The Mornings Of The World (Tous Les Matins Du Monde) in 1991.
With his warmly distinctive deep vocal timbre, imposing stature and pepper and salt beard and moustache, Marielle – who was born in Paris on 12 April, 1932 and died yesterday (24 April) in hospital after a long illness –started his career.

"Terror in the city!" GKids has debuted an enjoyable teaser trailer for the animated film Phantom Boy, the latest from French filmmakers Jean-Loup Felicioli & Alain Gagnol, who previously made the Oscar-nominated animated film A Cat in Paris. Inspired by the classic gangster stories of the 40's and 50's, this film is about an 11-year-old hospitalized boy who has the ability to leave his physical body and float around the city. This teaser is more of an introduction, and I'm sure the next trailer will get into more of the actual story. The film features the voices of Edouard Baer, Jean-Pierre Marielle and Audrey Tautou. This actually looks damn good, charming but also an edge to it with the gangster story. Looking forward to this. Here's the teaser trailer for Jean-Loup Felicioli & Alain Gagnol's Phantom Boy, from GKids' YouTube: Leo has a secret. A mysterious illness has transformed him into a phantom boy,...

Audrey Tautou, Edouard Baer, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Patrick Ridremont and Patrick Descamps have joined the voice cast of the animated feature "Phantom Boy" for Folimage, Lunanime, France 3 Cinéma, and Rhône-Alpes Cinéma.
Oscar-nominated "A Cat In Paris" directors Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli helm the project which follows a seriously ill 11-year-old who has the ability to leave his body at will.
Thanks to him, an injured police officer and an intrepid journalist can both assume the roles of guardian angels when a disfigured gangster is threatening the city. A 2015 release is planned.

French-Martinican rapper/actor Didier Morville (aka Joeystarr) stars in this romantic comedy titled Max, which follows the story of a young girl who sets her single father up with a prostitute, as, as you' expect, things get a bit complicated. The film co-stars Mathilde Seigner, Jean Pierre Marielle and Shana Castera, and is set for release in France on January 23, 2013. The title of this post references the fact that Joeystarr's casting in a rom-com is apparently antithetical to his usual M.O., and is taking many in France by surprise, given what I understand to be a usual harder edge to him. His said to be "violent" past is littered with a...

The Festival de Cannes will welcome Jean-Paul Belmondo on Tuesday 17 May with a special evening held in his honour. “We are delighted that he has agreed to attend this gala evening in celebration of his talent and career. His range and personal charisma, the precision of his acting, his cocky wit, the ease with which he carries himself have made him, along with Jean Gabin and Michel Simon, one of the greatest French actors of all time, a fact to which many films bear ample witness. No doubt the entire panoply of French actors, headed by his Conservatory friends Jean Rochefort, Claude Rich, Pierre Vernier and Jean-Pierre Marielle, will want to walk up that Cannes staircase to celebrate ‘Bébel’ to the sound of the rapturous applause of his diehard fans,” say Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux. The time has certainly come to celebrate this extraordinarily talented French actor. Since the late 1950s,...

Best known for directing Marion Cotillard to worldwide fame and an Oscar win in "La Vie En Rose," director Olivier Dahan has lined up his project and unlike his latest effort--the largely forgotten country music drama "My Own Love Song" which is heading straight-to-dvd--he's getting out of the music world and stepping into sports instead. Tout Le Cine reports that an ensemble cast including José Garcia, Gad Elmaleh (who will be seen in Woody Allen's "Midnight In Paris"), Ramzy Bedia, Franck Dubosc, Omar Sy, Joey Starr and Jean-Pierre Marielle have been assembled for the soccer comedy "Les Seigneurs." Chicago – Can a movie be too creative? Jean-Pierre Jeunet tests this theory with his ridiculously over-the-top “Micmacs,” a clever film that is almost too polished and refined to be effective. Of course, it looks great on Blu-ray but this giant Jeunet fan can’t help but think his style has finally trumped his substance.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
As much fun as it can be, there are elements of “Micmacs” that simply don’t work. But would we feel the same way if it were a debut? Is it disappointing only in light of “Amelie,” “Delicatessen,” and “The City of Lost Children”? Film doesn’t exist in a vacuum and it’s impossible to ignore the fact that while this film is masterfully-designed, it’s lesser compared to its auteur’s previous works. Still, lesser Jeunet is still pretty quality in entertainment, especially in HD.
Micmacs will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on December 14th,...

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet Writer: Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Guillaume Laurent Starring: Dany Boon, Dominique Pinon, François Berléand, Albert Dupontel The year is 1979, Bazil’s (Dany Boon) father is blown to bloody bits while dismantling a mine in the Sahara (this ain’t no Hurt Locker); his mother subsequently has a complete mental breakdown. Next, Bazil escapes from a repressive Catholic orphanage. We find him years later, now an unabashed cinephile (ala Quentin Tarantino), working as a clerk in a video store. One night while mimicking the The Big Sleep verbatim, Bazil is caught in the crossfire of a shootout. At this moment, we dissolve into the opening credits of what seems to be a film within a film. (Is Bazil dead? In which case…is everything else all a dream?) With a bullet lodged in his head, Bazil’s surgeon is left with two options: remove the bullet (reducing Bazil to a...

When it comes to odd and quirky films, you’re not going to get much more odd and quirky than Micmacs. The movie stars Jean-Pierre Marielle, Nicolas Marié, André Dussollier, Dany Boon and is directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet who previously brought us French classic, Amelie. How Jeunet’s mind works is fascinating and intriguing and you have to wonder if anyone else could have pulled off the masterpiece that is, Micmacs other than Jeunet.
Micmacs focuses on Dany Boon’s character, Bazil who has a rather large gripe with war and weapons in general after his father is killed by a landmine making him an orphan and then later in life, he’s inadvertently shot in the head! Managing to survive this, and through a serious of rather strange and comedic events, he discovers that the bullet lodged in his brain and the landmine that killed his father were both...

Sony Pictures Classics have provided us with poster, photos and trailer from Micmacs.
Micmacs is a 2009 film by French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie, The City of Lost Children, A Very Long Engagement) that premiered on 15 September 2009 at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival as a gala screening at Roy Thompson Hall. Its original French title is Micmacs à tire-larigot, (‘Non-stop madness’). The film is billed as a “satire on the world arms trade”.
Micmacs synopsis
First, it was a mine that exploded in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Years later, it was a stray bullet that lodged in his brain… Bazil (Dany Boon) doesn’t have much luck with weapons. The first made him an orphan, the second holds him on the brink of sudden and instant death.
Released from the hospital, Bazil is homeless. Luckily, our inspired and gentle-natured dreamer is adopted by a motley crew of secondhand dealers...

It has been said that if you want action films, look no further than Asian and American cinema; and no one makes a mystery or a satire like the British. The same can be said about the French when it comes to love stories, and while our Seine-strutting amis can also whip up slapstick comedies like few can (think Louis De Funes donning a beard, black hat, and impersonating a rabbi), they rarely fail to deliver captivating examples of both of these beloved genres.

The Last Airbender
Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit...

A stray Chabrol, the next Juno and more Toni Servillo brilliance are among this year's hidden gems on the festival circuit. Hunt them down now before they're buried for ever
Home festivaling is one of the few perks of losing mobility through a back injury. What better way to cover 300+ screen events across the UK for Empire Online's Festivals & Seasons page than letting them come to you? Much festival fare falls squarely into the three-star category. But, every now and then, a disc arrives in the post containing a gem that leaves you wondering how the distributors missed it. So here's a personal selection of the festival favourites that have either failed to secure a UK release in 2009 or are not currently on the schedule for next year.

Drawing on one of France's most popular screen stars, the incorrigible Dany Boon from the comedy mega hit Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis, as well as a cast of some of the country's best-known actors, including André Dussollier, Nicolas Marié, Jean-Pierre Marielle and Julie Ferrier, Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, City Of Lost Children, e Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain) returns with his latest film Micmacs a satire on the world arms trade. Judging by the trailer, this has got all the qualities audiences have come to love in Jeunet's previous films, a fantastical comedy from a world class director that is sure to not disappoint. Is it better to live with a bullet lodged in your brain, even if it means you might drop dead any time or would you rather have the bullet taken out and live the rest of your life as a vegetable? Are zebras white with black stripes or black with white stripes?...

- #14. Micmacs à tire-larigot Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet Cast: Dany Boon, André Dussollier, Nicolas Marie, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Julie FerrierDistributor: Rights Available. Buzz: One of the most sought after titles at Tiff with subtitles, buyers and the viewing public can expect the essential Jeunet-esque trademark elements to make it into this film: visual flair, curious looking and sounding characters, and Jeunet's ability to stretch comedy into all sorts of directions. The Gist: Co-scripted by Guillaume Laurent and Jeunet, this is a satire on the world arms-trade. Is it better to live with a bullet lodged in your brain, even if it means you might drop dead any time or would you rather have the bullet taken out and live the rest of your life as a vegetable? French filmmaker Jean-Jacques Beineix.
Jean-jacques Beineix:
Divas and Lions and Moons, Oh My!
By Alex Simon
The Noveulle Vague, or “French New Wave” was launched by a group of film critics and cinefiles who began France’s legendary Cahiers du Cinéma magazine in the 1950s. With Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless in 1959, the movement was launched, emphasizing behavior over aesthetics, content over form, and pastiche of other film genres (particularly those born in the U.S., with a healthy dollop of Italian neorealism) over the more traditional narratives of French films from years past. Francois Truffaut, Jacques Demy, Agnes Varda (see our interview with her below) Eric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol, and Jacques Rivette all fell under the spell of magazine co-founder and theorist Andre Bazin, laying the groundwork for a series of articles, monographs and critiques that formed the so-called “auteur theory,” (or more specifically “"La politique des auteurs" ("The policy of authors,...

I don't put much stock in movie nostalgia, but I still remember how thrilled I was by my first viewing of Delicatessen over fifteen years ago. Even with the weak elements of the movie taken into consideration, the world realized within is still one I like going back to. So I've been eager for actual footage from Micmacs A Tire-Larigot, the first film from Jean-Pierre Jeunet since 2004's A Very Long Engagement. And now thanks to Twitch we have a teaser, after the jump. The film is being called a satire on the world arms trade. (And hopefully a better one than, say, Nic Cage's Lord of War.) Dany Boon leads the cast as a guy with a bullet in his brain; frequent Jeunet collaborator Dominique Pinon is in the cast as well, alongside André Dussollier, Nicolas Marié, Jean-Pierre Marielle and Julie Ferrier. More important, the aesthetic is pure Jeunet,...

Photo: B. Calvo - Tapioca Films-Epithete Films Jean-Pierre Jeunet is best known to most as the director of Amelie, others add Delicatessen to the mix and then others remember his last film A Very Long Engagement, and believe it or not that was five years ago. Oh, some may also remember Alien: Resurrection, not sure where most of you fall on that one. Well, the wait for the next Jeunet feature is not too far off as his next film Micmacs a tire-larigot is set to hit French theaters on October 29, and hopefully not too long after here in the States with Warner Bros. currently holding distribution rights. The film is described as a satirical comedy looking at the world of weapons merchants and is said to be in the same vein as Amelie and Delicatessen. I have found a variety of plotlines around the Internet, but they are either extremely simplified or in French.
