Ernest Maftei(1920-2006)

Ernest Maftei was a famous Romanian film and theater actor, poet. He attended the Normal School in Bacau after which, between 1941 and 1945, he studied the violin at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Iasi. He made his cinematic debut in the film Rasuna valea (1950) in an uncredited role. He played in over 100 films especially supporting roles. His most notable roles are in Haiducii (1966) Reconstituirea (1968), Osânda (1976), Drumul Oaselor (1980), Dumbrava minunata (1980), Tusea si junghiul (1992) and Modigliani (2004). Together with Colea Rautu and other actors, he founded the Romanian Cinematographers Union. He was married only once and had only a son, Gheorghe Maftei who is a well-known plastic artist. On the night of December 21, 1989, he participated, together with Romanian youth, in the anti-communist demonstration in University Square. He also took part in street demonstrations in 1990. After 1989 he continued to act in films, remaining a famous actor. He received the UCIN award on the 50th anniversary of cinematography, and from the board of directors of the Union of Film Authors and Producers of Romania "Diploma of gratitude" for his contribution to the development of national art and culture. He died in October 19, 2006 in Bucharest, Romania.
