Henry Lytton(1865-1936)
- Actor
Henry Lytton, the English singer and actor, was to Gilbert & Sullivan
what John Gielgud was to Shakespeare, only
more so. The baritone joined the famous D'Oyly Carte Opera Company that
staged Gilbert & Sullivan operettas in 1884 and remained with them
until 1903. With return engagements with the company between 1906 and
1934, he was associated with them for 50 years. He was knighted in
1930, becoming the only theatrical performer to receive the accolade
for services to the theater as a Gilbert and Sullivan performer.
