Exclusive: Filming has wrapped in Wales on Mr. Burton, the upcoming biopic about the man who inspired screen legend Richard Burton.
Independent Entertainment has sold UK and Ireland rights to Icon Film Distribution, which will release the film theatrically in 2025 to coincide with the centenary of Burton’s birth.
As we first revealed, the film will tell the true story of the relationship between Welsh schoolmaster Philip Burton and a wild young schoolboy called Richard Jenkins. The latter dreamed of becoming an actor, but his ambitions were in danger of being derailed by a combination of family trouble, the pressure of war, and his own lack of discipline. Mr. Burton recognized the raw talent in his pupil, and made it his mission to fight for him, becoming his tutor, strict taskmaster and eventually his adoptive father. Exclusive: Cake has completed the acquisition of assets from rival Jetpack Distribution in a move that doubles the size of its library and reduces the kids TV sales field by one.
The agreement, financial terms of which were not disclosed, comes after Cake announced a deal to buy a significant number of Jetpack’s assets last month. We understand talks had been ongoing for several weeks prior to that.
Jetpack, a well-respected indie distributor, had had been hit by the tough kids TV marketplace, but its founder, Dominic Gardiner, and Cake Group CEO Ed Galton pointed to their close personal relationship as reasoning behind today’s deal. According to Companies House, Jetpack liquidated on August 21, but a deal for the assets such as Dennis & Gnasher Unleashed had been announced two weeks prior.

Starring Martin Freeman, Flavia De Luce will begin production in the UK in October. More on the film below.
Martin Freeman, Jonathan Pryce and Toby Jones are all set to star in Bharat Nalluri’s Flavia De Luce. Based on a series of novels by Alan Bradley, the upcoming film will follow the titular 11-year-old amateur detective and master poisoner as she investigates a murder her father is accused of.
Kftv reports that the film is set to shoot in the Reading/Guildford area this October. The entire film will be shot on location, too, making it a nice change of pace from this summer’s CGI-heavy offerings.
Susan Coyne has adapted the first of 10 Flavia De Luce novels for the film and Protagonist Pictures took their film to Cannes earlier this year to introduce the film to buyers. We hope that went well.

It’s funny how an old TV catchphrase will just magically pop into your brain. While watching this new comedy action caper I recalled George Peppard as Hannibal Smith, leader of the NBC 80s ratings juggernaut, “The A-Team”. With a big cigar clenched between his pearly whites, he’d grin and exclaim, “I love it when a plan comes together” as the bad guys’ vehicles would flip over (though there had to be a shot of them climbing out of the windows unscathed for the censors). Well, the two main characters of this film might say, “I hate it when a plan falls apart”. And it does spectacularly for these luckless schmoes, actually played by members of the “Ocean’s Crew” (the 2000s reboot). And though they spend most of the story’s runtime trying to escape and survive, the title ironically labels them The Instigators.

After a one-week theatrical window, Doug Liman’s recent reteaming with “Bourne Identity” collaborator Matt Damon, “The Instigators,” which was also co-written by and co-stars Casey Affleck, is set to debut on Apple TV+ this Friday, August 9. In addition to Damon and Affleck, the film also features performances from Hong Chau, Michael Stuhlbarg, Alfred Molina, Ving Rhames, Jack Harlow, Ron Perlman, Toby Jones, and Paul Walter Hauser, a cast that will no doubt earn at least a few streams despite middling to negative reviews, including IndieWire’s, which calls the film, “Flimsy in most respects but fun enough in its fumbling.”
No matter what you think of “The Instigators,” it is obvious the intention behind the film is to tell a heist story more focused on human flaw than it is on claiming any riches. Simply put, if you’re coming in expecting “Heat” or “Ocean’s 11,” expect to be disappointed.

There’s some undeniable wisdom in that Mark Twain quote about writing what you know, and that’s likely the reason why some of the best films of all time are about filmmaking itself. This also applies to the horror genre, as we can see from beloved classics like Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and even The Blair Witch Project.
And in honor of recent meta horror flicks like MaXXXine and The Exorcism (not to be confused with The Pope’s Exorcist), we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating 6 underrated Hollywood Horror Films that explore the dark side of show business.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining ‘Hollywood Horror’ as scary movies where filmmaking itself is a source of scares. That being said, we’ll be avoiding Found Footage movies since most of them are already exercises in meta storytelling.

The Instigators is a new film from Doug Liman, a director who burst onto the scene with the Sundance-rejected indie hit Swingers and the criminally underseen but ultra-cool Go. Yet, somehow, Liman transitioned from cult comedies to big-action Hollywood blockbusters with the first two films in The Bourne franchise and the film that made Jennifer Aniston a divorcee, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
In addition to critically approved films like American Made and Fair Game, Liman has a filmography stacked with critical and box office disappointments. Real stinkers include the stagnant Chaos Walking, the forgettably campy Road House, the underwhelming Jumper, the obligatory Three Musketeers, and the streaming film Locked Down, which had many rooting for a Covid-19 victory.
Unfortunately, things will not improve with The Instigators, mainly because of a thoughtless and inattentive script that never bothers to sweat the details.

Doug Liman’s The Instigators begins with Boston crime boss Mr. Besegai (Michael Stuhlbarg) laying out his plan to rob the corrupt Mayor Miccelli (Ron Perlman) on election night. When Besegai’s regular crew falls through, he’s forced to turn to the only men desperate enough to take such a high-risk job on such short notice: Cobby (Casey Affleck), a local barfly with a criminal record, and Rory (Matt Damon), a depressed divorcee who vowed to kill himself in a year’s time if his life didn’t start to improve. Is it just idiotic to keep hoping original made-for-streaming features might pass for real movies? Sure, there’s an occasional exception, but not Apple TV+’s The Instigators, even the generic title of which sounds like a dozen things you watched on planes and promptly forgot. The comedy-ish thriller about a pair of inept crime cohorts winging it after a botched heist boasts considerable resources, a proven director and a highly capable cast. But even an extended vehicular chase sequence involving half of Boston law enforcement and a trail of wreckage generates few sparks.
The Doug Liman film will play a week in theaters from August 2 before its global streaming premiere a week later. Which is one week more than the director’s last film — the silly but at least enjoyably pulpy Road House remake with Jake Gyllenhaal — got before dropping on Amazon.

Despite winning an Oscar for playing the saddest man in all existence in “Manchester by the Sea,” Casey Affleck’s earlier roles seemed well aware that he could nail the role of an annoying kid brother. One of the best jokes in “Good Will Hunting” is Affleck in the backseat of the car singing, “I wish I had a double burger…” and then he brought that same irritating-yet-endearing energy to the trilogy of “Ocean’s” movies. While Affleck may not be playing a kid brother in his new movie “The Instigators,” it’s the same type of chattering tag-along that works incredibly well for him (and perhaps no surprise that he also co-wrote the script). Paired once again with Matt Damon, the two’s instant chemistry easily carries the film as a breezy watch that for better and worse provides the sense that the stars are making it up as they go along.

Don't look now, but Matt Damon has become one of cinema's most exciting screen presences over the last decade or so. Having taken his leading-man looks and turned into a character actor's dream, he's figured out how to enjoy the best of both worlds. If Christopher Nolan, Steven Soderbergh, Ethan Coen, or any other prolific filmmaker has a buzzy, high-concept thriller in the works, you can almost set your watch based on Damon popping up in a brief supporting role or even a cameo late in the game -- and, more often than not, it's as a scumbag villain meant to reinforce each film's themes. It takes a serious absence of ego to embrace this (relatively) unsexy phase of one's career, in which such thankless work might only ever win the affections of the Film Twitter crowd, dad-movie enthusiasts, and not much else. But it's a rare talent that can...

Doug Liman directs; Matt Damon and Casey Affleck star in a thoroughly entertaining buddy comedy caper. Our review of The Instigators:
At its core, The Instigators is about two complete idiots. Fortunately, the filmmakers that dreamed them up are much smarter, as proven by two introductory scenes that are as precisely engineered as a Swiss watch.
In the first, we meet Matt Damon’s Rory, a tired, worn-down military veteran who misses his son and, in his own mumbling way, admits the depths of his depression to his shrink Dr Rivera, played with clear-eyed intelligence by Hong Chau. Cut to Casey Affleck’s Cobby, an alcoholic ex-con who’s so morally bankrupt that he uses his own young son to perform his breathalyser tests for him.
One scene after that, and we’re introduced to the grand scheme that will shape the rest of the movie: local hoodlum and...

Like Doug Liman’s recent Amazon remake of Road House, his latest streaming effort The Instigators quite frankly misses its calling. Both films should have had wide theatrical runs before hitting the services. They are the kinds of films that are fun to watch with a crowd.
Nevertheless, other than a nominal week in limited release, The Instigators will hit Apple TV+’s home audience on August 9. Still, I have to say Apple has turned out a number of streaming attractions that are a cut above, and this is yet another example. With a grade-a cast led by Matt Damon (who is also a producer with partner Ben Affleck) and Casey Affleck (who co-wrote the script with Chuck MacLean), this is pure, often riotously funny summer entertainment, a perfect blend of genres from action to comedy to crime, not a minute of it to be taken seriously.

In the Boston-set crime comedy The Instigators, a couple of down-on-their-luck losers get themselves involved in a heist that goes predictably wrong. Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne are traveling into another realm for psychological thriller “Slingshot.”
The film centers on an elite trio of astronauts who board a years-long, possibly compromised mission to Saturn’s moon Titan. “As the team gears up for a highly dangerous slingshot maneuver that will either catapult them to Titan or into deep space, it becomes increasingly difficult for one astronaut to maintain his grip on reality,” the official synopsis reads.
Emily Beecham, Tomer Capone, and David Morrissey co-star.
“Slingshot” is directed by Mikael Häfström with a script co-written by R. Scott Adams and Nathan Parker. Häfström previously directed 2007 film “1408,” which was based on a Stephen King short story, as well as features “Outside the Wire” and “The Rite.” Håfström first announced “Slingshot” in 2021.

There are a lot of ways one can look at Apple TV+’s upcoming Matt Damon and Casey Affleck two-hander “The Instigators.” From one angle, it’s a heist film, another, a buddy comedy. As it picks up, it becomes both an ensemble crime piece and a political satire before ultimately descending into an action caper replete with car chases, shootouts, and multiple buildings being blown up. There’s even a touch of human tragedy as Damon and Affleck’s characters Rory and Cobby carry with them ineptitude, but also a desperate desire to move forward. For many directors, this would seem like a lot to take on, but for Doug Liman, it was just another day at the office.
“I know people watch ‘Instigators’ and it looks like we’re having a lot of fun making the movie, but the reality is, it’s a lot of work,” Liman...

More than a decade after the 2011 release of Steven Spielberg’s criminally underrated The Adventures of Tintin hit theaters, fans of Hergé’s beloved characters continue to wonder if we’ll ever see a sequel. Andy Serkis, who voices Captain Archibald Haddock and Sir Francis Haddock in the 2011 original, says Tintin producer Peter Jackson is still working on another film featuring the dynamic duo of Captain Haddock and Tintin. In October 2011, Peter Jackson said he would direct The Adventures of Tintin 2. However, the silence on the project has been deafening ever since.
Originally, Steven Spielberg wanted to release The Adventures of Tintin 2 in 2015, but the legendary filmmaker’s schedule had other plans. At the time, Spielberg said a follow-up to the 2011 animated film would adapt two books in the Tintin saga. Screenwriter Anthony Horowitz was reportedly working on a screenplay but left the project in 2018. Jackson and Spielberg have yet...

Apple TV+ has debuted the first official trailer for Doug Liman's The Instigators, an upcoming heist thriller starring Academy Award-winners and Boston natives Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting; The Martian; The Departed) and Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea; Oppenheimer; The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) in the lead roles as two thieves who, after a botched robbery, are forced to go on the run with their therapist (Academy Award-nominee Hong Chau).

Matt Damon is a desperate father and Casey Affleck, an ex-con pursued by the police and vengeful crime bosses, in the trailer for Doug Liman’s heist movie The Instigators, which dropped on Thursday.
“I got a once-in-a-lifetime score,” Rory, played by Damon, says early on in the trailer (below) as he teams with Cobby (Affleck) to rob a corrupt mayor (Ron Perlman) of his ill-gotten gains. But when their heist goes wrong, the duo are forced on a chaotic getaway.
In over their heads, Rory enlists his reluctant therapist, played by Hong Chau, to join their riotous escape through the city, where the inept thieves must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture — or worse.

Matt Damon does a heist in director Doug Liman’s latest thriller, The Instigators, which also co-stars Casey Affleck. Here’s the trailer:

This one’s co-written by Casey Affleck, who also stars alongside Matt Damon as a pair of criminals whose attempted heist goes horribly wrong. In the aftermath, a therapist (Hong Chau) gets swept up in their frantic escape from the cops.
The Instigators marks Damon’s reunion with Liman over two decades after they made the hit, franchise-starting thriller, The Bourne Identity. Their latest film together seems to have the same lightly comic touch as the recent Road House remake, which, a few caveats aside,...

Those who may be clamoring for a new Ocean’s film can somewhat get their wishes fulfilled this year with two movies featuring the Steven Soderbergh caper alums. While George Clooney and Brad Pitt reunite for some criminal hijinks in AppleTV+’s Wolfs, similarly, their fellow Ocean’s Eleven/Twelve/Thirteen co-stars also reunite for a crime comedy, which happens to be about a heist. Apple has just released the trailer for The Instigators, which finds Matt Damon and Casey Affleck attempting to rob a bigwig in Boston.

"Boston's most wanted. And least qualified." Apple TV has revealed the official trailer for an action comedy called The Instigators, another amusing buddy movie about two guys who end up on the run around a city, much like Jon Watts' film Wolfs - out later this year. Set in Boston, The Instigators follows two robbers who must go on the run with the help of one of their therapists after a theft doesn't go as planned. Matt Damon and Casey Affleck co-star in this crime comedy as Rory and Cobby: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to rob a corrupt politician's ill-gained earnings. Matt Damon is partnering up with Affleck once again — no, not Ben.
This time, it’s Ben’s younger brother Casey Affleck who co-stars in “The Instigators,” which he also co-wrote with Chuck MacLean. Affleck stars as Cobby, an ex-con who has to work with his ex-military, currently-desperate father Rory (Damon) to rob a corrupt politician’s ill-gained earnings. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police but also by backward bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture — or worse.
Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones co-star, with singer Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman also appearing.
