Her husband married her under a false name, so she is in ignorance of his relatives, and in this state of ignorance she lends a willing ear to the wooing of the Rev. John St. John, her late husband's brother. The wedding ceremony is about to take place when a storm at sea arises, a ship in distress is sighted, there is a call to man the life-boat, and Dora's fiancé volunteers. Among the rescued is Dora's legal husband Frank, who re-asserts his claim to wife and child, grows jealous of his brother, and once more becomes a drunkard. One of his New York reprobate companions appears to demand money. There is a quarrel and both men are killed. The sinful man has reaped as he sowed, and like so many of his kind has made others suffer for his misdeeds, particularly the fond girl who married him.

When he is released, they resume their marriage and become the godparents to McCoy's son.

Jack's treasury diminishes, little Hope is led into dangerous influences, and all ends in Estelle taking Hope and eloping with Brandon. By the firelight Jack fondles a toy ship of Hope, dreams of the child he loved and settles back in loneliness. A few years later Jack becomes manager of the firm and the confidante of the owner, Wilson. Hope is now a girl of eighteen. Estelle and Brandon, nearing the margin through their life of sin, bedeck Hope with all the finery possible, anticipating profit through her disposal. Money passes into Brandon's hands from a slaver, who poses as a man of wealth, while the boys who are outdone discover his identity and he is arrested. A theatrical manager, seeing in Hope a possibility for his opera, makes her a promising offer and takes her home. In the home of Estelle and Brandon a fight results, as Estelle claims part of the money given by the slaver. The fight ends in Estelle shooting Brandon and her own death. Hope, accompanied by a mission worker, followed by the theatrical manager, comes on the scene, and Hope sees a new chance for life. She at first pledges herself to the mission worker, but later experiences a revulsion in feeling and becomes "Circe" in an opera. Jack, freed by the death of his wife, Estelle, is engaged to a society girl, but the engagement is broken by the girl's mother, who learns he is only a clerk. On the day of the canceled engagement, Jack inherits the wealth of his aged employer. Hope is true to her "Circe" role, acting the same when off the stage, to the chagrin of her admirer, the theatrical manager. The city rings with the name of "Circe." Jack, not knowing it is Hope, refuses all inducements to meet the famous star. Jack, bored by persistent women, escapes to the seashore. Hope in the meantime has reached the limits of her physical endurance, and a huge cabaret affair ends in her collapse, resulting in her secret escape from the theatrical manager to the same resort at which Jack is stopping. Jack and Hope, neither identifying the other, meet. A romance ends in their marriage and a honeymoon is followed by a great reception when Jack introduces his wife into society. Suspicions are awakened and gossip spreads the rumor that Jack's wife and "Circe" are identical. Hope pines for her old life. The opera company returns with its old manager, the old love of "Circe" awakens, she fits in the role of "Circe" owing to the sickness of the star, while Jack is supposed to be far away. Jack, having suspicions confirmed, awaits the return of Hope and her old lover, and as they revel in Jack's parlor, Jack appears as "Circe's Ulysses." Jack places poison in one glass of wine. Hope, still in her "Circe" gown, is forced to serve the two men at the pistol point. One cup is the cup of chance, the other death. The theatrical manager drinks his death, and Jack leaves for the seashore, giving all to Hope, who collapses. Later, in her wheelchair, Hope sees Jack by the shore. Jack refuses forgiveness. She, in desperation, hands him a picture of herself at the age of four. Her cry startles the nurse; Jack turns to forgive, knowing she is his own "Hope," but the wheelchair accidentally carries Hope over the cliff to her death.

In spite of Katie's sudden cold behavior, Lane spurns Mrs. Van Allen, who then turns her attentions on John Found. Found proposes to the widow but is rejected with a brutal racial slur. Humiliated, Found uses his position to incite the local Indians. After attacking the O'Day ranch, the Indians besiege the unguarded post, and Found drags Mrs. Van Allen through the post by her hair, eventually causing her to die of fright. Entreated by Startled Fawn, his Indian lover, to flee, Found escapes unharmed, and the army troops defeat the remaining Indians. Lane convinces Katie of his bachelorhood, and they happily reunite.

After several delays, Steve brings his rival's unscrupulous business practices to light. When Barbara witnesses the fight that ensues between Steve and her fiancé, she runs off and gets lost in the forest. After a search party is formed, Steve finds her and she realizes that she loves him. Harrigan, one of her fiancé's henchmen, witnesses this tender scene and shoots Steve. Barbara then draws Steve's pistol and shoots Harrigan dead. Only wounded, Steve finally is embraced by Barbara.

Shattered, Mimi declines in health and eventually throws herself into the river but is rescued and taken to the hospital. Realizing it is only a matter of time before she dies, she drags herself back to the room where she and Rudolphe were happiest. Rudolphe is there and she dies knowing that he loves her.

This incurred the ill-will of the Prime Minister, who set out to overthrow the little kingdom and turn it into a republic with himself as ruler. Prince Boris renounced his title and cast his lot with the peasantry. He was loved by the common folk and proved a leader. During the annual fair people gathered in the capital from far and near. There were rumors of an uprising. The young queen had not brought about much change in the conduct of the official household. The extravagance had continued to eat up the revenue raised by the heavy tax, and the people were protesting and demanding that something be done for their relief. These rumors reached the girl queen, and clad in the garments of a peasant girl she went forth during the fair to learn what she could. In this way she soon learned of her disfavor. One day she met Prince Boris, who told her of conditions that existed. One of the government spies, overhearing his conversation, suspected that he was forming a plot against the young queen, who was not recognized by the spy because of her disguise. The spy hastily informed the Prime Minister, who ordered the arrest of Prince Boris. The soldiers were dispatched, and Prince Boris was placed under arrest. The young queen protested. She as his companion was also confined to the prison. The chief of the Royal Guard notified the Prime Minister of the arrest, telling him that during the struggle with the queen she defied him by proclaiming that she was the queen, and this aroused the suspicions of the Prime Minister. Alone he went to the dungeon and discovered that Boris's companion really is the queen. It dawned upon him that now he had her in his power, he will force her to make him her king consort, or bring about conditions that will speedily overthrow the government. Meanwhile Lesbia, a peasant girl, learns of the conspiracy and through her love for one Ivan, sergeant of the Royal Guard, she secured the release of the queen, who escaped in safety to the Royal castle. Next morning the queen heard the tolling of the prison bell. On asking her secretary what it indicated, she was told that her sweetheart, the Prince Boris, was to be executed at sunrise. She rushed into the office of the Prime Minister and forbid the execution. He laughed at her. Back in the village, outside the prison wall, the soldiers were drawn up to execute Prince Boris. But the people saw their beloved leader. rushed forward, overpowered the soldiers and released him from his bonds. An attack was then made on the castle. Prince Boris discovered his peasant girl companion to be none other than her Royal Highness, Queen Honore. The people were for revenge, but the queen told them of the Prime Minister's conduct and followed by her the crowd attacked Baron Stefano, which resulted in his death. The queen accepted Prince Boris as her beloved king consort.

However, when he tries to persuade her to go with him she refuses. After his departure, Nellie is more lonely and dissatisfied than ever. Tom, who is perfectly contented, cannot understand her attitude, and resents her longing for other companionship. He upbraids her for complaining and hot words are spoken. Tom arrogantly tells her if she does not like the life, she may return home and remain there. Heartbroken, Nellie goes back to her uncle's house, Stephen again meets her and tries to induce her to go to the city with him. While he is pleading with her, John, who has somewhat repented his hasty action, enters, his suspicions, previously aroused by a note Stephen had written to Nellie, are confirmed when he sees the two together. Denouncing Nellie, he tells her he is through with her and she may go with Stephen. Cast out by her aunt, Nellie leaves for the city to strive to forget her unhappiness. She struggles, but without success. One day she is knocked over by an auto driven by Flynn, who she had known at the Wayside station. Through Flynn, Stephen is informed of her whereabouts and, unknown to her, he secures a position for her and gradually gets her into his debt. Unhappy among her uncongenial associates, Nellie realizes that life surrounded by gayety and people can be equally as lonely as life at a deserted wayside station. Longing for John, she writes, begging forgiveness, and hinting at a great secret. Stephen, feeling that he has waited long enough, reveals the truth of her position to Nellie and demands payment for his favors. While she struggles against his advances, the door is opened and John rushes in. Stephen is thrown out, and husband and wife realize that love is the only thing in the world.

Paul also asks for Frou Frou's hand, but Brigard refuses, stating he is too jolly a companion to be trusted as a son-in-law. Five years pass, and although Frou Frou adores her son Georgie, the calm role of a homemaker does not suit her, and on one of Louise's visits she realizes her own place has been usurped, as both De Sartorys and Georgie go to her for advice. Paul still loves Frou Frou, but she fights against her growing attraction for him, and begs him to go away. Finding she is no longer necessary for the happiness of her husband and son, after a furious tirade against Louise, she leaves and joins Paul in Venice. Paul's mother receives her, and the next day, De Sartorys, who has followed, finds her, and despite her pleas, fights a duel with Paul, in which Paul is killed. Out of the loneliness and sorrow of the ensuing months her soul is chastened, and she returns to ask her husband one last favor, that she be allowed to die in the house she entered as a bride. Although Louise also pleads for her he at first refuses; but when Frou Frou, formerly so light-hearted and care-free, pleads on her knees, he can no longer deny her, and the two meet in a tearful embrace. Her life closes with a semblance of happiness, as she gives to Louise the two that are closest to her, her husband and son.

She makes her escape at midnight and, powerless to do anything, Alexis is forced to see his wife pass out of his life. The baby is given to Marta Antonovitch, in charge of the girls at the Imperial Ballet School. Years later Vasta is the most apt pupil at the school. Her father comes to see her often and is deeply affected by her resemblance to her mother. The relationship is kept secret, but when he is ordered to the south for his health he gives last instructions that she be well cared for. Michael Pavloff, the impresario for the Russian Ballet, who has discovered the duke's secret, goes to the school to choose the dancers to be sent by the government to Paris. He takes a liking to Vasta, but Marta refuses to allow the girl to go when he chooses her for deportation. The girl frets over the refusal, disguises herself as a boy and changes places with a youth who had not wanted to go. In Paris Lola, despite the sorrow of the changing years, holds sway over men's hearts. Pavloff is an ardent admirer of hers, but lately he has been thinking more of Vasta. Richard Moraino, a young artist commissioned to paint the portraits of the Russian Ballet, is attracted by Vasta. Their courtship progresses and one afternoon while they are having tea together, Lola and Pavloff are seated at the next table. Both women feel an interest in the other and Lola is startled when Pavloff tells her he has discovered she is the daughter of the Grand Duke Alexis and that he intends to get her for his own. One night during the performance the electrician is killed and the stage darkened. When the lights are turned on again they discover Vasta has disappeared. Pavloff has taken the girl and locks her in his apartment. To divert suspicion he gives a dinner party. During the revelry Lola, who is a member of the party hears a half-smothered cry and, guided by it cornea to the locked door behind which Vasta is concealed. She stays until the last guest has departed and then appeals to the liquor-dazed Pavloff, She secures the key to the room and hurries back, cautioning Vasta to make haste, but Pavloff comes upon them and seizes Vasta in his arms. Lola then shoots him. Then Lola reveals her identity. Alexis, who is passing through Paris, stops to see Pavloff. He discovers Lola and the dead man and accuses her of having been his mistress, but when Vasta comes forward and tells all, Alexis begs her forgiveness. He says he will take the responsibility of the killing knowing he will be vindicated when he says it was to save the honor of his wife. Richard and Vasta are once more brought together and Alexis asks his wife if she is willing to brave the Russian Court with him after all these years. Her happy smile is sufficient answer.

Alexis rushes in and rescues her from his father's wrath and then writes a letter to the Karischeffs, terminating his engagement to their daughter. In retaliation, the minister of police, who is being forced to resign, sentences both Ilda and Alexis to ten years in Siberia as his last official act. In Siberia, the couple attempt to escape, but are caught and are facing a firing squad when Count Nazimoff, who has assumed Karischeff's position as minister of police, arrives with a pardon. Ilda and Alexis return home, and the count, penitent, finally grants them his blessings.

Through the jealous interference of Crosby's wife, Castleton discovers the truth about Sylvia and goes to Lone Meadows to marry her.

Finding the girl's coat near a lake, Hudson assumes that she has drowned and dynamites the lake in order to locate her body. The explosions restore Adoree's memory, and she recalls her marriage to the Vicomte Jean de Michelet, who happens to be in town raising money for Belgian relief. The vicomte is brought to his wife and the family is happily reunited.

Arlette agrees, and Boissard, feigning an interest in Richard's work, sends the young artist to Italy to continue his education. A year passes and Richard returns, now a celebrated artist. Boissard then demands payment of Arlette, who reluctantly agrees to honor her debt. Before she can be dishonored, however, Boissard's servant Sarthe, who is devoted to Arlette, stabs his master, thus freeing the girl to marry her artist.

District Attorney Scott is questioning Robert about the propriety of his experiments when Kate enters and sees Jimmy. Her memory suddenly returns, and she narrates her story to Scott, clearing Robert's name.
