- Donatella is a simple and honest Roman girl, daughter of a bookbinder and girlfriend of Guido, a gas station owner.

Soon a new character is introduced in the story, Salvatore's sister, a no gooder, lover of a loan shark who has got her pregnant. Maria tries to convince him to marry her but she only gains Salvatore's distrust who believes her to be the old man's lover. The two now live apart and Maria is pregnant with Salvatore's child. When she delivers the baby she brings him to the convent like her mother did with her and while she prays the Madonna to forgive her her imaginary sin she's joined by her husband who has finally understood she has always loved him.
- An honest clerk gets into business with a smuggler and commits an embezzlement to pay for his daughter's (Madunnella) wedding. The smuggler has, however, set his eyes on the girl and blackmails her father about the embezzled money. Madunnella succeeds in getting her father's money back even although she has to withstand a sexual assault. Furious with rage the clerk kills the smuggler and is sent to jail. He will be out, however, in time for his daughter wedding with her legitimate boy-friend.
