The Outer Worlds 2 will see the return of Obsidian's space-faring RPG with a follow-up to the first game set to come our way sometime in 2025. We at last got a proper look at the new adventure briefly in action late last year, with some gameplay and confirmation that it will also be coming to PS5.

Set to bring us to a fresh star system with new companions, weapons, and environments to explore, The Outer Worlds 2 promises to be twice as big as its predecessor. First revealed back in 2021 with only a title to confirm its development, we've since learned much more about what's in store thanks to The Game Awards 2024 trailer, which has firmly placed it as one of the most exciting new games of 2025.

As the biggest upcoming Obsidian game set to release this year - now that first-person fantasy adventure Avowed is out in the wild - RPG fans are in for a real treat. And while you can expect to see The Outer Worlds 2 on PS5, it's also one of the upcoming Xbox Series X games you can dive into day one on Xbox Game Pass.

So, read on below as we take you through everything we know so far about The Outer Worlds 2. From it's potential release date, gameplay, and all the latest news, we've fully scanned the galaxy and logged all the details that you need to know.

The Outer Worlds 2 release date will arrive in 2025

After years of waiting, we know that The Outer Worlds 2 release window will be sometime in 2025. This news came our way during The Game Awards 2024 and marked a small relief to all those who have been waiting for the news since 2019.

That's right, the RPG is thought to have entered pre-production in 2019, following the success of the first game. So, it's been literal years for this release window. While we still don't have a firm release date, we do know that it will be revealed soon since work on Avowed has now wrapped - the game came out on February 18, 2025.

With attention now fully focused on The Outer Worlds 2, we expect to have a substantial update heading our way in a few month's time. The Outer Worlds 2 pre-orders aren't yet available either. So, stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, check out Obsidian's latest release with our Avowed review.

A new Outer Worlds 2 trailer dropped during The Game Awards 2024, and it finally gives us a look at the upcoming RPG's gameplay. With a funny voice-over accompanying the footage, we see some sci-fi player hubs, enemy encounters, tons of new shiny weapons, and some stunning environments.

You can watch the clip for yourself above to see all the action play out.

Obsidian Entertainment Tweeted the following alongside the game’s announcement: "New star system. New crew. Same Outer Worlds."

The Outer Worlds 2 setting is taking us to a new world then, and while we'll be sad to say goodbye to some truly legendary companions, this is probably for the best. We're still light on details regarding this new star system, so keep your eye on this page as we update it once new information heads our way.

The Outer Worlds 2 is set to come to PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. While it was thought to be an Xbox Series X exclusive, Obsidian revealed it will be also be landing PlayStation's console in our first proper look at the upcoming RPG back in December 2024.

The Outer Worlds 2 gameplay was briefly shown during The Game Awards 2024. While we didn't see any of the RPG choice-based elements that made the original game so great, we did have an extensive demonstration of the combat in the upcoming game.

In the trailer, we saw players running for cover, shooting at enemies, and even wielding some cool metal weapons. The level designs look a bit like Mass Effect 2 and Gears of War, with the name of the game being "run to chest-high cover, duck, and then shoot."

The teaser also told players that this game is twice the size of the first Outer Worlds (which lasts for about 12 hours). With that in mind, either the story has been expanded, or there will be more to explore in this game.

We'd also like to see a wider variety of companions to interact with. The ones in the first game were, for the most part, interesting and worth talking to, so we’d like to see Obsidian double down on that and give us more. The fact that our wish list consists of simply wanting more from The Outer Worlds 2 is a testament to how good the original is.
