Ismat Chughtai, who is most famous for her controversial short stories has also written some beautiful novels. Ek Qatra Khoon (A Drop of Blood) by Ismat Chughtai, describes the historic Battle of Karbala and the martyrdom of the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed , Hazrat Imam Hussein (AS). The story starts from the childhood of Hazrat Imam Hussein and the love and affection the Prophet showered on his grandchildren and tell us about the events till the tragic incident of Karbala.
Some critics say that this novel is the prose of Meer Anees 'Marsiya'. Written in very simple language, the novel is worth reading.

She was considered the grand dame of Urdu fiction, Along with Rashid Jahan, Wajeda Tabassum and Qurratulain Hyder, Ismat’s work stands for the birth of a revolutionary feminist politics and aesthetics in twentieth century Urdu literature. She explored feminine sexuality, middle-class gentility, and other evolving conflicts in the modern Muslim world. Her outspoken and controversial style of writing made her the passionate voice for the unheard, and she has become an inspiration for the younger generation of writers, readers and intellectuals.

A novel by Asmat Chughtai, based on Waqia e Karbala. I've never read about Karbala in such a detail. After finishing it, one realises how important this event was in the history of man kind. The enemy prepared the slowest and the worst of death for the Imam and his family; they accepted it but never ever accepted the unjust rule.
I recommend it to everyone who is interested in Islamic history. Islamic history, or it's better to say World History is not complete without Karbala.
In the end, I find it my duty to say that I really feel sad how many of the things were NEW to me, the little details, the family hierarchy of the Imam(A.S). Why are these things not told to us? Karbala should be of common knowledge to each and every Muslim. Our history is incomplete without it, utterly incomplete!

قرآن و حدیث سے دوری اور تاریخ اسلامی سے لاعلمی نے آج کے مسلمان کو اس مقام پر لا کھڑا کیا ہے کوئی بھی آسانی سے اسے گمراہ کر سکتا ہے اور آج کا مسلمان بغیر تحقیق اس راہ پر چل پڑتا ہے۔ اپنے دین، رسولؐ اور ان کی آل کے بارے میں ناقص اور کم علم کی وجہ سے اسلام آج طرح طرح کی بدعات کا شکار ہے۔ فرقہ واریت ایک عفریت کی طرح مسلمانوں کو اپنے چنگل میں دبوچے ہوئے ہے۔ یہاں تک کہ حرمت والے مہینے اور سوگ زدہ ایام بھی اس فرقہ واریت کی نذر ہو جاتے ہیں۔ اور ہم مسلمان چپ چاپ تماشائیوں کی طرح فرقہ واریت کے اس عفریت کا تماشا دیکھ رہے ہیں۔ کیا اس دن کے لئے رسول پاکؐ اور ان کی آل نے اتنے مظالم اور صعوبتیں برداشت کی تھیں۔
انہوں نے حق و انصاف کا بول بالا کرنے ، اسلام کے فروغ و بقا، امت مسلمہ اور انسانیت کی فلاح کے لئے اپنی زندگیاں تیاگ دیں۔ جس قدر ظلم و ستم انہوں نے اپنی جانوں پر برداشت کیے کہ ہم جیسے انسانوں کی تو پڑھتے ہوئے ہی روح کانپ جاتی ہے، آنکھ اشکبار ہو جاتی ہے، دل لرز جاتا ہے اور جسم کے رونگٹے کھڑے ہو جاتے ہیں۔ اور آج ہم اسی اسلام اور امت مسلمہ کے ٹکڑے ٹکڑے کرنے کے درپے ہیں۔ حیف صد حیف۔
میں نے جب یہ کتاب پڑھنی شروع کی تو مجھے بہت سے لوگوں کے میسجز آئے کہ ہم نے بھی پڑھنی شروع کی تھی مگر پھر کسی نے کہا کہ اس میں بیان ہوئے واقعات صحیح نہیں ہیں، تعصبات پر مبنی ہیں تو ہم نے چھوڑ دی۔ میں نے پھر سٹوری لگائی تو جن لوگوں نے یہ کتاب پڑھی ہوئی تھی انہوں نے بھی اپنی اپنی راۓ دی اور سب کی راۓ مختلف تھی۔ میں نے پھر بھی اس کتاب کو پڑھا اور مکمل کرنے کے بعد میں اس نتیجے پر پہنچی ہوں کہ مصنفہ نے نہایت غیر جانبدارانہ انداز میں تمام واقعات بیان کیے ہیں۔ اس کتاب میں حضرت علی اور حضرت فاطمہ کی شادی، حسنین کی ولادت، بچپن و لڑکپن کے واقعات ، رسول پاک کے سنگ بتائے لمحات، حضرت علی اور امیر معاویه کے درمیان جنگ، حضرت علی اور حضرت حسن کی شہادت، واقعہ کربلا کے اسباب، جنگ اور جنگ کے بعد کے واقعات کو مصنفہ نےمفصل مگر بغیر کسی تعصب کے بیان کیا ہے۔ ہاں یہ بات ضرور ہے کہ چونکہ ایک تاریخی واقعہ کو ناول کے قالب میں ڈھالا گیا ہے تو اسلوب میں بے تکلفی کا عنصر غالب ہے اور کہیں کہیں مصنفہ نے رومانوی انداز اختیار کیا ہے جس پر مجھے بھی اعتراض ہوا تھا۔ مگر اصل واقعہ میں کوئی ہیر پھیر یا تعصب کی جھلک کم از کم مجھے نظر نہیں آئی۔
آخر میں صرف اتنا کہنا چاہوں گی کہ کم از کم مذہب کے معاملے میں دوسروں کی آنکھوں سے دیکھنے اور دوسروں کے دماغ سے سوچنے کی بجائے، اپنے دماغ کا استعمال کریں۔ خود پڑھیں، تحقیق کریں اور اپنی راۓ قائم کریں کیوں کہ روز محشر آپ کے اپنے اعمال کا حساب ہوگا اور آپ یہ کہ کر بری نہیں ہو سکیں گے کہ یا اللّه فلاں نے ایسے کہا تھا۔ اللّه نے انسان کو عقل و شعور اسی لئے عطا کیا ہے کہ وہ غور و فکر کرے۔
اللّه پاک ہم سب کو ھدایت دے۔ آمین

This book contains two stories, one secretly wrapped inside the other except for when they separate to caress each other across nations and centuries. 'One Drop of Blood' is simply written but reads like a literary epic, filled with heartrending scenes of love, family loyalty, suffering, and resistance against fascism. This story of Imam Husain Ibn Ali carries an urgent message for all, regardless of their beliefs.

A must read... Describes the events of Karbala with such passion and in such manner that you feel you are witnessing the tragedy yourself...

Topping up on Yuganta with another explorative piece centred around religion, I had picked up One Drop of Blood piqued about the story of Karbala and Ismat Chugtai, the unlikely Marxist-leaning author of this 20th century retelling.
The translation isn't an epitome of literature, it felt at points that the dialogues were picked out of a children's animated movie, possibly because of the extreme reverence that was being showered on the characters.
It was simple enough though and the fact that the core event is intriguing and a still surviving cultural artefact helped me sail through it.
PS: Would like to read, if it exists, a counter-view written from the PoV of the Caliph.
