Description Dressed in Puritan costumes of black cloaks, starched white collars and high black hats, the characters of Arthur Miller's 1953 play seem harsher than ever. Miller used the 1962 witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts, in which 19 people were hung, as an analogy for the anti-Communist McCarthy-era witch-hunt in which he was caught up during the 1950s in America. The play is about an evil young woman, Abigail Williams who whips up hysteria about witches in the town in order to have the wife of a farmer she loves killed.
