A rare mystique surrounds Ireland's national theatre. With its individual approach to acting and drama, the Abbey Theatre Company has become one of the great names of the world's stage. It opened in 1904 to provide a place for the superb plays of the Irish literary revival: the verse plays of W B Yeats, J M Synge and later, Sean O'Casey.
