    Toyota Prius Prime

    Current Model
The redesigned Prius Prime shares the same low-slung design as the regular Prius, but it adds a larger lithium-ion battery that can be plugged in for an electric-only range between 39 and 44 miles, depending on trim, impressive for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Unlike a pure EV, it also has a 2.0-liter gas engine.
Once the battery is depleted, the Prius Prime acts like a regular hybrid. The EPA estimates the combined mpg to be between 48 mpg and 52 mpg, depending on trim, when operating in their hybrid modes. It managed 43 mpg with our tested XSE trim--a disappointing 8-mpg drop vs. the regular Prius. It takes about 10 hours to charge the battery on a standard 120-volt outlet, or about 4 hours on a 240-volt EV charger. The Prime is not available with all-wheel drive. In most other ways the Prime is very similar to the regular Prius, with responsive handling, a firm ride, a noisy engine, awkward access, and limited visibility. Its hatchback design adds versatility.

The redesigned 2023 Prius Prime shares the same low-slung design and straightforward interior as the regular Prius, but it adds a larger lithium-ion battery that can be plugged in for an impressive (for a PHEV), electric-only range between 39 and 44 miles depending on trim level. Unlike a pure EV, it has a 2.0-liter gas engine.
Once the battery is depleted, the Prius Prime acts like a regular hybrid; EPA estimates for the SE trim gets 52 mpg combined and the XSE and XSE Premium trims get 48 mpg combined. Charging the battery from empty should take about 11 hours on a 120-volt household outlet or about four hours on a 240V charger. AEB with pedestrian detection and AEB highway are standard. New for 2023 is standard BSW and RCTW.

The Prime is a plug-in Prius that can usually drive about 23 miles on electricity only. However, the gas engine tends to start up in cold weather and under full-throttle acceleration.
It takes two hours to charge the Prime through a 240 volt connector, and five hours on regular 120 volts. When not running in EV mode, the Prime operates much like the regular Prius, alternating between electric and gas power, returning 50 mpg overall. With slightly altered styling than the regular Prius, the Prime is can hold only four passengers, and it loses the rear wiper. The infotainment system, with its large touch screen, is unintuitive to use. Ride and handling are quite similar to the regular Prius, with responsive handling and a compliant ride. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. All 2020 models get standard Apple CarPlay compatibility, two USB ports for rear-seaters, and a standard three-passenger rear seat (the previous models only had a two-person rear seat). For the model year 2021, the Toyota Safety Sense system has been upgraded to TSS2.0. This suite of safety equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with low-light pedestrian and daytime bicyclist detection, lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance, automatic high beams and road sign assist. A version of lane keeping assistance (lane tracing assist) helps to keep the car in the center of the lane while the adaptive cruise control is being used. Adaptive cruise control is standard with the stop and go function.
