It’s likely that before the archaic and newly-retired Mayor Tortimer sailed off into the sunset he turned to the fresh-faced Mayor-to-be beside him and whispered, “Remember, you’re only a Mayor, not a King, and this is a democracy, not a dictatorship.” And with that, he turned, winked, donned his Hawaiian shirt and embarked for the nearby tropical island. This is the true motto of Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
If you were hoping, like our malevolent Mayor Jon to enforce crazy and slightly questionable laws into your town, build a 50 foot statute of yourself and initiate a full-on reign of terror to send your animal neighbours shaking in their boots, or even simply take complete personal control of the festival scheduling duties, then you may be disappointed to know that sadly there is a limit to your mayoral prowess. However, this slight set-back is only a minor blemish on an otherwise perfectly peaceful gaming experience.
New Leaf is unlike any of the other Animal Crossing games you may have played, finally putting an end to the whines of previous critics who complained that Animal Crossing ‘has no point’ and there isn’t much to physically do. By putting you in Tortimer’s tiny tortoise-shaped shoes and providing you with the daunting task of revitalizing and urbanising the town, Nintendo finally provides the player with a reason to keep coming back, other than to rid the land of all of those blasted weeds.
As Mayor you will be spending the majority of your time making money, lots and lots of money. You'll need it in order to build a new public work project, such as a bridge that'll cost you 128,000 Bells, or to establish a new ordinance there is a processing fee of 20,000 Bells. Along with paying off your debt to the infamous loan-shark Tom Nook, filling your house with pretty things and lavishing yourself with new getups, the continuously burning hole in your wallet can feel pretty menacing. However, there are many secret ways of making money very quickly in New Leaf, most of which have something to do with that tropical island that Tortimer has moved to. Hmm…
When you’re not busy collecting signatures from townsfolk in order to build clubs and other facilities, the gameplay reverts back to the familiar slow-paced grounds of Animal Crossing: Let’s Go to the City and Animal Crossing: Wild World, allowing you to spend your in-game minutes however you choose, from promenading barefoot along the moonlit sandy shores, to catching bugs, fishing for sharks, diving into the deep blue or even dancing to DJ K.K.’s electro beats.
There are a few new additions to New Leaf to look forward to, such as brand new characters and animal species (hamsters and deer) and new types of fruit such as lemons, bananas and durians. The Main Street and town also accommodate new buildings, such as a Gardening Shop run by the adorable sloth Leif, Club LOL which is a new theatre-come-nightclub hosted by Dr Shrunk and DJ K.K., Brewster’s Café which replaces the Roost from previous games, Tom Nook’s new business endeavour Nook’s Homes — which works as a housing remodelling shop — and a Campsite for travelling animals to stay at, to name a few. Most establishments can be upgraded by spending a certain amount of Bells, such as the Museum which now expands onto two floors, with an additional gift shop and personal display section.
Visually Animal Crossing has always been a treat to look at – bright colourful sceneries, cheery cartoonish characters, vibrant colours and rounded child-like designs — and New Leaf is no exception. The implementation of 3D adds a lovely amount of depth to the on-screen images, allowing you to easily discern nearby objects from those further away, and works brilliantly with the revolving globe landscape design. New Leaf has also amended character designs by altering the heights of certain animals, so that elephants are no longer the same size as squirrels; it’s not a huge improvement, but certainly makes a town populated by bickering animals look as realistic as it possibly can.
The music and sound effects of New Leaf are also on par with the serenely orchestrated melodies of its DS, Wii, Gamecube and N64 cousins, providing the perfect soothing background to the relaxing world of Animal Crossing. Once again, players can also obtain recordings of K.K. Slider’s songs to play at their leisure in their own in-game houses, as well as the bonus option of album posters to adorn every wall. Subtle sound effects are also of a high quality, from the bubbling of water beneath the waterfall, to the cooing of the owl which watches over the town’s notice board at night, everything helps to create a convincing real-life town setting full of energy and life.
It can be argued that the Animal Crossing franchise is best suited to Nintendo’s portable systems, as there is no greater feeling of satisfaction than taking your town with you to your best friend’s house, linking up and then axing dozens of their trees, stealing their fruit, and sitting back to watch their helpless expressions. New Leaf allows players to hook up either locally or far away via online access, meaning that a European gamer can happily run amuck in their American friend’s town if they have an invitation to do so. However, if you want to cause total chaos and destruction in neighbouring towns without losing all your friends, you can use the facilities of the all-new Dream Suite, which for the small sum of 500 Bells allows you to visit other towns in dream-mode; anything you do will not affect the real state of the town – which is pretty much an open invitation to go mental with the shovel and axe.
StreetPass is also available to use in New Leaf, collecting data from passing players and allowing you to access their homes and mail-order their furniture from the boulevard on the Main Street. Finally, any custom clothing designs created at the Able Sisters’ shop can also be saved as QR codes and scanned in by friends, giving players an easy way to share their favourite creations, while in-game screenshots that are exported to the SD card are a fun extra.
Conclusion
New Leaf is designed to be played in small chunks, every day, over a very long period of time, and stresses this fact by slowly unwinding events in real-time. Yet it is apparent from only a comparably short time — as opposed to months and years — spent with the game that Nintendo has done a great deal to address the complaints of its Wii predecessor, and provided plenty of exciting new features and buildings to enjoy. Taking on the role of Mayor is a great innovation to the series, finally giving the player a real reason to keep coming back time and time again.
It's a shame that powers of the Mayor are slightly limited to installing benches, instating pre-designated laws and occasionally building bigger venues, however the vibrant visuals and delightful gameplay of New Leaf stop this from ever becoming too much of a problem, making New Leaf the latest essential member of your 3DS collection.

Great review Katy.
Really looking forward to having everyone come over to Gagaville.
This is literally THE game I bought my 3DS for on launch day. I haven't been this excited about a video game ever. Great review, Katy!
Nice to see this makes a good change, as opposed to the almost copy-paste Wii version. I'm really looking forward for this, and I hope the series takes off as in Japan.
Any idea how big the eShop download will be for this title - that will help me figure out if I'll be getting the cartridge or it digitally
My god hurry up Sunday and get here!!!
Oh I am so looking forward to my free download code arriving this coming Friday 14th.
Gotta love that so many games promotion!
WHY CAN'T SUNDAY COME HERE ANY FASTER!!!
A decent review, although a paragraph or two on the multiplayer experience, increased customisation options and added gameplay features available on the new island should have been included.
Only 9? Really?
oo my hard earned 40 bucks.....to spend or not to spend...if only i knew other people who were getting this game
Can't wait for my free code to arrive.
I'm excited for this game! Can't wait till Sunday
Great review, Katy! Can't wait to ruin everyone's town!
Better start saying my goodbyes to real life.
@skyluigi2 I'm glad it impressed NL this much. Animal Crossing is like a staple of my life, so this pretty much guarantees it's going to be a "10"-worthy experience for me!
Since my free (so many games) game was a glitch (due to double points for my FE:A download) I decided against getting a game (AC) that I would definitely be buying so as to support Nintendo at the same time as getting a free copy of a game (Luigi's ghost mansion) that I otherwise wouldn't have bought.
I would have liked to hear a little more about the multiplayer aspect of the game. I heard there are mini-games or something to play against each other?
Phew, good thing I'm getting this for free and digitally to boot! I will no doubt be playing this every day!
Great review by the way.
@tchaten I think it's 1GB or around 8,000 blocks
I'm going to be downloading this game so I have it on my 3DS all the time.
I really need to re-friend a bunch of you long-time N-Lifers I lost in my 3DS repair job. C'mon Sunday! It's time to chop down some trees!
Awesome review @Superconsole. You lucky earlybird.
@clavier141 Okay cool - debating whether to get this digitally - of all the games this makes sense to have always available - hop in a little bit each day - this is my first Animal Crossing game - so I'm not sure if I'll be playing this for months or years on end ...

@MetallicDonkey @P184 Hey guys, I wanted to keep the review as short and sweet as possible (while keeping a few things secret for players to experience on their own), as obviously there a loooads of new features in New Leaf which I couldn't possibly cover in one review.
To answer your question, the Tropical Island does features lots of mini-games for players (and their local/online friends) to experience, such as bug-catching, fishing, ore-mining competitions and matching games. You win medals which can be exchanged for island-exclusive items!
If anyone else has any questions which I haven't covered in the review, feel free to ask me here, I'm more than happy to help!
@Luigifan141 Why Sunday - seems like Friday would have been a much better option - now all the kids in school will be playing Animal Crossing
Next week's schedule: Sunday - Animal Crossing New Leaf, Monday through Thursday - E3, Tuesday - Wii U Nintendo Direct, Friday - The Last of Us, Friday Night - Man of Steel 3D
Greatness.
@Superconsole Good review! The length was just fine and conveyed a good amount of information.
Good read. 9 from Edge, 9 from Eurogamer, 9.6 from IGN... oh man, the hype.
I bought my 3ds years ago just because of this game... I'll probably buy a Wii U when they announce AC for it too.
That's the score I figured it would be. I'm sure ill have fun with it!
Ordered the pack-in 3DS for my wife for her bday. Don't tell her, its a surprise.
I plan on getting this, it will be my first Animal Crossing game.
Maybe I could check it out... I dunno yet :/
I bought a used copy of Wild World last month from Gamestop and I'm absolutely hooked on the game. Everything I've read from here and other places tells me they've just made the game even better so this will be my first downloaded retail game.
Boring (the game, not the review).
@Joshers744
Actually, looks like this game will be $34.99.
must... avoid... hype train D:
Getting this as a free download as part of the European 'So Many Games' promotion. Can't wait, the 1GB download will be an excruciating wait!
@tchaten - I thought I read somewhere that its about 6000 blocks in size...
My only gripe with AC is the fact that the main characters repeat themselves over and over again. People like Tom Nook end up driving me round the freaking bend after the 100th time going into his shop!
I hope this game changes that!
@theblackdragon Impossible to avoid as it's about to arrive at your station!
What about the grass? Has Nintendo slipped us another diatribe by way of gameplay on their hatred of grass?
Wonderful review, Katy! It got me more excited for the game than I already was (which was a lot). So glad this is pre-ordered and paid off...now Sunday needs to hurry up and get here so I can start cleaning up the city!
Great revw, Katy. Can't wait for this
Great review Katy ^^.
I seriously bought my 3DS for this game, and I can't believe it's already almost here!
I'm dying from anticipation.
@DarkCoolEdge Plain (your comment, not the game).
Thank you NOE for delivering it free of charge and digitally, so I can play it anytime and anywhere.... ^^
This week will feel like three years.
....There's an Animal Crossing for the N64?
...Anyways yeah, getting this
@theblackdragon - Hype train gonna getcha'!
Sunday shall be most awesome! This will be the first retail game I will download.
Still on the fence about it. Still doesn't sound like you do all that much, even though you do more than in the past. Having played the GCN one a lot, it was mostly to find the NES games.
Maybe when someone does a B2G1 sale, I'll pick this up. We'll see.
Good review though, well written.
Free eShop copy ? Yes please !
Anyone know if you can have multiple saves on one cartridge? I only have one 3DS in the house and want to know if there is a need to buy multiple copies?
@Erica_Hartmann: the first one was for the 64 (Animal Forest), it was never released as is outside of Japan, we instead got a modified version of the Gamecube port (Animal Forest +).
The localization team did such a good job at adapting it that they retranslated it to japanese and sold it as "Animal Forest +e".
@Shadowkiller97 yes, you can have up to four players living in the same town but only the first one gets to be the mayor, but that's not really all that important.
@Erica_Hartmann Doubutsu no Mori! Japan-only N64 original of Animal Crossing Pretty similar to the Gamecube copy we all love so much.
MINE <3
I am getting the 3DS XL limited edition, because I want it on my console always and don't wanna wait for it to download! lol
Great review. As a portable title, I hope I'll enjoy it. I haven't been able to enjoy Wild World. I did enjoy the original and City Folk, though.
@tchaten It's not my idea to release it on a Sunday.
Then again, I'll be downloading it at 11:00 PM on Saturday night, so to me, it will come out a day early anyway.
Huh...never knew about the N64 version, lol.
Anyways time to go make these days go by insanely fast. plays Monster Hunter 3U/Sins of a Solar Empire/Oracle of Ages/Seasons xD
Day one download. I have some money set aside for this game.
@Superconsole I'm really interested in the soundtrack of the game. Does it feature primarily recycled material from Wild World/Let's Go To The City, or is it mostly new tracks for the overworld, changing with each hour? The reason I ask is because I REALLY digged the soundtrack of the original, but was pretty disappointed with WW/LGTTS.
This will end up being my first Animal Crossing game ever. I'm pretty stoked to finally be able to play one. I hope this game lives up to the hype for me!
This looks pretty fun! If I'm not mistaking, this is the highest scoring AC on Nintendo Life. I might have to pick it up! I really liked Wild World.
I was extremely disappointed with City Folk; I immediately regretted buying it and only played it a handful of times. But it looks like this is just what it took to breath new life into the series. Saturday at 9pm, I'm downloading the crap out of it.
@bahooney The soundtrack is pretty similar to Wild World, albeit with new tracks. It's mostly calming atmospheric music fitting with the season/time of day, and while it definitely changes throughout the course of the day, I'm not 100% certain that it changes every hour. A few of the more memorable character themes are back (e.g. Resetti's), but I do believe it's mostly new material.
@HeatBombastic Oh, I'm sorry. I just wanted to share my opinion, you know, like in a forum. Sure, I didn't explain why but I didn't have time and most important, I did not insult anyone.
And yes, Animal Crossing is really boring to me. My loss
What I'm concerned about is that, even though New Leaf adds SO much to Animal Crossing, it doesn't do a single thing to correct any of the hundred flaws City Folk brought in. But... maybe being off the TV will help mitigate how City Folk was physically painfully slow compared to Wild World.
My only concern is how I'm gonna find time to sleep when I start playing! Can't wait!
Great review! Looking forward to this!
Downloading at midnight.
Great review. And as always...
Get HYPE!!!
Downloading this. So excited!
I preordered it, but unluckily the store won't do a midnight release due the the game not being "popular enough". Where do GameStop midnight release planners get off? I will be at the store when it opens, however, and the rest is history.
I haven't been this excited for a game since Brawl 5 years ago. Long, drawn-out waits tend to have an effect on me, it would appear.
Nonetheless, there are only 10 days until I can join my new furry friends in St. Fart or whatever I'm calling my town... but it's going to feel longer than the last three years of waiting put together!
I appreciate the niche this game fills, and it clearly has a dedicated following.
I gave Wild World a shot back in the day, and was fairly bored by the whole thing. Maybe I'll give that game another shot to see if New Leaf is worth buying for me.
"Visually Animal Crossing has always been a treat to look at" You lost me there.
@Ron_DelVillano
Haha nice. XD
@Katy Ellis Nice review, haven't played a Animal Crossing game yet. This may be my first!
This is a good week. I have an interview for a new job Thursday, I'm buying my first Animal Crossing game Sunday, and I am taking vacation days Monday and Tuesday to watch e3! I'm ready for the end of the week!
I love playing Animal Crossing in winter. Especially around Christmas. It's the only way your guaranteed a white Christmas in UK ^_^
Getting this day 1 right before I go on vacation on the 10th!
I have been eagerly waiting for this game since it was first announced and its easily my most anticipated game of the whole year. DAY ONE PURCHASE HERE I COME
Looks like Fire Emblem will have some company atop my activity log rankings. Can't wait to play it!
@darkstar19 No, you are not. I loved the GC Animal Crossing (especially for the free VC games) and then was way too addicted to the DS Animal Crossing that I swore off the series as it was much too much of a time suck. If I'm going to play a game every day it'll be whatever game I'm working on at the moment, which right now (and for a while it seems) will be DKCR3D. This review tempts me so much, and I'd get a digital version so I could play it always, but then I'd be doing nothing else ever again.
What do you think should i get this as my free game from so many games offer or Fire Emblem?
And does any one know if i get a new 3DS (was thinking of getting a 3DSXL or maybe Nintendo have a new model at E3?) can i still download the game (and all the other app and NES/GBA games to new 3DS)
Thanks & keep up the cool site
Forget Tom Nook, what about Isabelle? She's the secretary of every town, she decides what kinds of laws the mayor can instate, and the mayor has no means of replacing her! Suspicious...
Can you mute this stupid and annoying mpipmpip? The voice acting would work great in this game...
My brother and I are getting this day one, so we'll be able to play online when we are seperated. My brother is getting the Animal Crossing XL, while I'll be downloading the game on my own XL.
This game is a must have, IMO. I never knew Animal Crossing was on the N64 in Japan(I looked it up). I always just thought it was GCN.
Why can't time go faster for this game to come?!
I kinda feel like I should get this game since everyone else is. D: I'll probably pick it up sometime anyway, especially since I've yet to give the series a try~
Thinking I might download this. It will be my first time with any AC game. It sounds a bit like Harvest Moon and I like A New Beginning.
Only 5 more days to go!
Day-One Purchase! Just like Ace Attorney 5! Can't wait!
I'm desperate for this game, and now I find I'll probably be too busy with visitors from the Friday onwards over the weekend to get to Game to pick up my pre-ordered copy until the Monday or Tuesday.
Great review can't wait to get this game free as part of the "too many games" promotion Gonna be awesome!
@Ron_DelVillano have you learned nothing from the review?
Never played an AC game but I still plan on picking this up.
Muah hah hah... The citizens of Balkopolis are only a few short days away from meeting their new overlord... er, mayor. This is going to be fantastic.
I'm still really stuck on what to name my town. That's the only thing about AC that troubles me; coming up with a name. Eh... we'll see.
I can't wait for this game. Oh, boy.
The wait is KILLING me!
@Aviator we should become best friends in New Leaf!
I've been waiting years for this game!! I can't remember the last game I was this excited for.
Since I have never played an Animal Crossing game before, I am a little worried about purchasing it right away as I intended to because of how it is a game that is apparently 'meant to be played in short chunks every day', as mentioned in the conclusion.
It sounds great, but right now, I might just be more in the mood for a game that I can enjoy over longer gameplay sessions.
If I manage to catch that bleedy Scorpion on Wild World, I may get this.
(Oh, and the Golden Watering Can)
I liked the review a lot, so I hope you don't mind a grammatical suggestion!
Superconsole wrote:
I understand you are trying to convey at a glance the breadth of town-altering changes; perhaps a paragraph could better handle the range of variety amongst the new establishments?
Aiming for 3+1 promotion. Already got Monster hunter and dk. now I have to pick two from those: fire emblem, luigis mansion and this:( hard choice
Just saw a commercial on the Cartoon Network!
I have been waiting for this since E3 of 2010, can't believe it is almost here. Must buy for me.
Pre-ordered (along with Project X Zone), now all I got to do is wait....................IT'S JUST TO HARD TO DO, MY LEG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, what drew me into the first AC game for GCN was the enchanting feel of the game presented by the Animal Crossing interactive website. It was probably the first time a website campaign actually intrigued me so much. I wonder if one of the internet archives has that site somewhere?
Anyway, every AC game that has come out I have purchased due to that same feel of enchantment. I hope this one brings as much laid-back splendor as it's predecessors.
@tchaten File size 1GB (8,192 blocks) supposedly.
@GladChimer
i can almost guarantee that none of the AC lovers here will be playing NL in short chunks, especially at first. it can eat up play time like nothing else. harvest moon games are 'supposed' to be played in short chunks also! i don't know anyone who does it that way.
i will be downloading one for me and another for my grandson the 9th at midnite. i am so freakin' hyped! i boarded that train a long time ago, @TBD. lol.
Nice review! We're so close to release it's crazy
Can't wait for June 9~
@superconsole
I heard you can't send letters to other towns. How true is this, and if so, why do you think that Nintendo axed the feature? Can you bring fruit to your town in the dream world? Is Wendell always in the Dream Towns or only on certain days? Can you still buy a timer to form your own games?
Can you still create constellations? Will they show up in friends towns this time? (that happened in Wild World but didn't in City Folk).
Can't wait for this. We've known about five big 3DS games (that I can think of) since the early days of the 3DS's life: SML3D, LMDM, SF643D, Sticker Star, and ACNL. Now they are almost all released!
I'm looking forward to getting a gas mask and designing a haz-mat suit for my character (or something that looks like one at least). I hope you can transfer your character from a previous AC game like WW or CF.
@k8sMum Thank you for clarifying!
It only took that much to hype me up for the game's launch again.
As long as there is a lot to do and enjoy, I am in.
Can't wait. I definitely agree that animal crossing is better as a handheld game than a console game.
@Eastlondon Fire Emblem costs $5 more to download in NA than ACNL will, and I don't know if that same sort of thing applies in EU, but if it does, I'd get the slightly more expensive game with your free games promotion.
I can not contain m excitement for the new Animal Crossing. I love this series and the overwhelmingly positive reviews have me giddy with anticipation!
Ready to rock some AC. Digital for me, wanna play anytime I feel. Since I almost never don't have my XL with me, I can play anytime. Ah yeah, gettin stoked to fish already.
Ugh... Project X Zone or Animal Crossing? Hard choice for me. I never played both franchises, I only can get one, and both look awesome. Sorry X zone I guess I will have to get you later (goes and gets Animal Crossing).
I was never interested in Animal Crossing.. looks like I am avoiding this...
Free thanks to the promotion!
Can't wait. 9 days.
Now had time to read the review through properly. Thank you Katy - enjoyable and informative. I assume you are joking, but I do have a bit of a problem with this:-
"there is no greater feeling of satisfaction than taking your town with you to your best friend’s house, linking up and then axing dozens of their trees, stealing their fruit, and sitting back to watch their helpless expressions".
Maybe it's my age, or maybe I have an abnormal attitude to gaming, but I always put a lot of heart into my little town and I would be devastated if someone did that to it during a play session. I do hope that isn't a general trend.
@Mowzle Haha yes I was joking. In honesty, I have waaay to big a guilty conscience to do that to anyone. If that was my town I'd cry for days!
Saying that, a friend (now acquaintance) of mine did axe some of my trees in Wild World a few years back.. It didn't end well.
Thanks Katy, didn't think you'd be one to do that, but I know it can happen.
Choose one's friends carefully is the rule of thumb I guess.
Cheating at fishing and bug catching is a different matter however......
@brandonbwii I think what you've heard is right, you don't seem to be able to send letters to other towns that you've visited, only your own townsfolk and 'Future Me'. Not sure why they'd axe this feature... I'd presume in order to accommodate all the new features they've put in?
You can't take anything to or from the dream world, only the drawings which Wendell gives you. However, Wendell doesn't function like he normally would in the dreams, you don't have to give him any food and he will give you a pattern from the town your visiting, not the normal patterns he gives out in the 'real world'. I think Wendell pops up every time you visit a dream town.
Yep you can still buy a timer! I think it pops up for sale after you've expanded the convenience store for the first time.
I don't think the Observatory exists any more (although I could be mistaken), as Celeste now works in the museum gift shop which pops up after you've expanded your museum to the 2nd floor.
Hope this answers everything!
I'm not really sure about this game. Everyone here seems to want it, but I don't know if it's the kind of game that I'll actually be glad that I purchased it. Nintendo marketed it as a kiddie game, and that is what has me on the fence about it. Maybe once a few people that I know have tried it out, I might get it, depending on what they think of the game.
AC is an acquired taste. I appreciated the previous games for what they were, but they just weren't for me. But I've played a bit of the Japanese version (I borrowed it) and loved it. Maybe it's because I've changed, but I love this game for relaxing, being creative, and using the social features. From what I've seen, the game will be 10 times better if you have (or make) friends that also play the game so you can interact with them and visit their towns.
It's the kind of game that would be almost impossible to make a useful demo for. It's a shame, because I know there are a lot of people sitting on the fence.
Looks like much of it is just recycled stuff, right down to using the exact same avatars with those creepy shifted eyes. I'll pass.
I am thinking I want this more and more...i just wish I knew peopel personally that were also getting this. OH well! Thank goodness for this site.
This game looks mighty interesting; definitely worth buying. Perhaps a good game to get into the series with.
Guess I will pick it up as soon as I can...even though I got the two oracle games to beat.
I need to inject this game into my veins immediately. After the disappointment of City Folk, I can't wait to jump back on the Animal Crossing train.
I remember playing AC on the GameCube, & it was one of the reasons I bought a DS when Wild World came out. The way New Leaf looks so far makes me think it'll be the best one yet. Definitely a day 1 purchase, even though I'm overloaded with amazing 3ds titles.
Wow, all of these 90%+ reviews are really getting me stoked! I wasn't originally planning on buying this game but after all of this praise it seems like I'm going to! I haven't played Animal Crossing since Gamecube days!
I've been iffy about Animal Crossing games in the past, but I think I'll give this entry a chance, it interests me alot. Great review!
Nice review, Katy.
This game is so close I'm actually streaming tears right now, omg. ;___;
@superconsole
Thanks for getting back to me. I saw an early video where it looked as if you could create your own exibits on the second floor of the museum. Is this true? If so, what kind of exibits can you create and are there any limits?
@DerpSandwich What's your friend code?
@Jamester0722 Jack — 3050-8564-9093
@brandonwii
I'm not aware of an Animal Crossing version that allows written communication across towns, except perhaps City Folk(?). Was that feature touted in an earlier build of New Leaf?
@DerpSandwich Do you have a WiiU? My NintendoID is Jamester0722 (anyone reading this that would like to add me as a friend on WiiU, go ahead. The more the merrier!)
@Rect_Pola I'm also curious about the grass.. I really hope it doesn't disappear like in City Folk when walked over! >.<
I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed this game. NOW!! I'm pregnant and life has been so stressful. Being able to escape inside a new Animal Crossing adventure is exactly what I need!! Why won't Sunday come faster?! I'm loving these comments, seeing people are feeling the same way I am!
Decent review! But not excited for the game at all. I rather get Project X Zone or wait for Smash Bros.
I'm going to get it without paying a dime. Well, actually I live in Europe and since I already bought Luigi Mansion 2, Fire Emblem and DK Country returns, Nintendo will give me a free copy of the game. Lucky me
Awesome. I started playing a little Gamecube Animal Crossing last week to "get in the mood" for New Leaf. Big mistake, now I'm playing the GC version. There goes a year or two.
Just reading about someone cutting down all of my trees is almost too much! If someone actually did that to my town, I would feel like going Red Wedding.
Looking forward to this when it's released. Chose it as my 'free game' during the Nintendo So Many Games promotion.
Ugh... as much as I try, I STILL always end up getting AC. Here I go again...
Wow....this really sounds good. This will be the first AC game I am going to purchase and play.
@Superconsole:
Would you know whether the "save file" for this game is on the game cart itself, or is created on the SD card?
I ask this because I'm wondering if the cart version could be played in any 3DS console in the same way I could play Wild World in either my DS or my DSiXL.
SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!!!
ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW LEAF
COMING EXCLUSIVELY TO THE 3DS-DOME!!!
@Mowzle If it's like the Fire Emblem special edition, the save is made to the game data itself on the SD card. The SD card can be used in other systems, but the game will ONLY BOOT in the system it came with, unless you perform a system transfer. This should only be a problem if you plan on buying another 3DS in the near future
Definite purchase but what to do...download it or get a hard copy... Decisions decisions.
4 more days!!! cant wait
@Roachant You can redownload software as many times as you have SD cards. So, for something like Animal Crossing: New Leaf... that means infinite towns! In general, Animal Crossing is the kind of game where you want download over retail.
Great review for an awesome game! Thank you!
I know I'm in the minority but I'd looove to see a WiiU version of this game. I'd really like to see some sweet Gamepad features included, such as local multiplayer
Sounds like you can play some of the game mission-based this time. I didn't expect that, sounds good.

Nice review, I was going to wait to read it in case of spoilers, but I couldn’t help myself!

1676-3953-3392
This was a nice review. I can't wait to get it on Monday...hopefully it will still be there...
I'll probably pick this up. It'll be a good game to play while i have nothing else to play since Pikmin 3 won't be out til August 4. I can easily get addicted early on to AC, but almost always lose interest after 4-6 months. The first game on GCN i played for probably 2 years almost daily. Wild World and City Folk onky for about 6 months and 4 months respectively. Hopefully with all the new additions, new leaf can keep me coming back for at least a year.
@TeslaChippie:
Thanks for that, I suspected that would be the case. I like to run a couple of towns and have pre-ordered the cart which I will play on my handsome new pink 3DSXL. I'll download another copy onto my older 3DSXL which I'll be getting as part of the "So Many Games" promotion. It's a real bonus! Not planning a System Transfer at the moment.
Getting the game on Sunday. Feel free to add me! Friend Code is 0619-3807-4819.
Visit the FC thread and let me know so I can add you back! http://bit.ly/18RYp2N
@Mowzle Hiya! It's saved to the SD card, so you can always take the card out to use on other 3DS consoles.
@MrBrownie Glad you found it useful. You can't order replicas of other players items during the dream mode, but you can order most furniture from players you've streetpassed in the streetpass avenue of the main street. All the online features sound a little confusing down on paper but all will become clear once you boot up the game!
@Superconsole:
Thanks, that's useful to know. I hadn't thought it would work that way.
Gosh, it's so close now! Great review.
I've been a huge fan of this series for a while. Pre-ordered it and I'm excited like crazy for this game.
I love how Animal Crossing went from a Japan only obscure game to one of Nintendo's most successful franchises.
Really hoping this title will capsize the 3DS into more success. Much looking forward to grabbing my free copy.
We're sooooo close now. I don't normally hype for games, but in this instance I probably will.
HYPE!
@Jamester0722 Hmm, I added you but it still says "provisionally registered friend."
@DerpSandwich Whats your Nintendo Network ID?
It's finally out and for digital download!
aw shucks, the download is too big for my 3DS atm. I think I'll buy the physical copy ;-;
I pre-ordered it with overnight shipping. It better be here by Monday. <3
Cannot stop playing it. Love it!
@Jamester0722 Probably DerpSandwich. I don't think my 3DS knows my NNID though. I actually haven't taken the time to add you on my Wii U yet.
My bro REALLY wants to play this game. I, however, do not take much interest these type of games. I hope he'll be satisfied with this...
My special edition 3DS XL comes in today! I am way too excited. Not only to start my town in New Leaf, but to finally be upgraded to the XL.
Also, great review.
It hasn't even been a week, but I have to say that this is the best AC yet. It's kind of like Harvest Moon in that I have the feeling that there is not enough time to do everything I want to do. And yet I can still do nothing and leave it all for another day.
I have never played an animal crossing game.. do you think my wife would like it? She loves those farmville, cityville type games on facebook.
Codes are now live on UK Nintendo site for anyone in the So Many Games promotion (as of 11pm UK time).
Have fun doods!
I'm most definitely getting this game on Monday! I'm so excited c:
Anyone wanna help me out? I am a little confused thanks.
This is my 1st animal crossing game. I was skeptic at first to be honest, and felt like a gamble when I bought the game. But now I can't put the darn game down. Absolutely brilliant.
If anyone wants to play with me on animal crossing add my fc:

An over-all great game. The 3D looks great, but who honestly cares, the Game-play is FANTASTIC. One of the best on 3DS (so far)!
93/100
StarExploder I added Ur fc now add mine thanks
@Lewwhyguy I agree, i personally prefer to leave the 3D off.
@Andrewroxsox
That's exactly how I felt too! I buy every good Nintendo game they release that's a main part of a franchise, not a dumb spinoff, with the exception of Pokemon and Animal Crossing. However, after reading endless hype and inadvertantly watching countless gameplay vids, my interest in BOTH games started to peak. After some investigative youtubing, and a sale on Walmart and Amazon for about $25, I gave in and decided to give AC a try. If I don't like it, oh well. It was only $25 and will still be a great addition on my shelf of 1st party titles. As for Pokemon X/Y, I found out after a good deal of research that Nintendo always releases a third game after every new generation of paired games that serves as a "remade master copy" of sorts, so I'll probably wait until the inevitable Pokemon Z is released, and just buy that. I actually am quite excited to see what's so great about these franchises, and am trying to keep an open mind toward new gaming experiences.
@-Ace
If you're into digital downloads, you can always upgrade to a bigger SD card! Not sure the max that's compatible with 3DS, but I'd assume 32gb, since that's the max for Wii and Wii U. Speaking of which, I think Newegg has 32gb SD cards on sale for like $17 w/free shipping, but they're pretty cheap everywhere now. Still, can't go wrong with physical- for collectibility, for resell value, and for insuring your game doesn't tank if your 3DS does.
@BrittGOAL14 added you add me fc: 2552-1334-4428

Just started a town recently would love some visitors or visit someone.
Love this game!
Time to for some Animal Crossing attention, been a while.
I'm so glad I jumped into the franchise. Actually, I tripped and fell.
Seriously, before I started my first game, first town, I fell on a sidewalk.
Hi i would love to have some visitors

First thing I did when I got the dream suite:
Went to Nintendo's official town and axed every single tree.
Since it's release, I've played New Leaf to death. I've made so many memories in my little town and have made great, real friends on this game through the online island. I'd say that this game has the greatest emotional hold on me of any game I've ever played. The music, the atmosphere, the experience of slowly growing and improving your village over time is wonderful.
It’s honestly crazy how this was the definitive Animal Crossing at the time, I remember playing this a ton when I was younger and it was the first game in the series I played, with New Horizons being out for some time now I mostly play that game but maybe I should revisit my old game in new leaf for some memories
