The last time “The Daily Show” was physically at the Democratic National Convention was in 2016 — two presidents, a global pandemic and many hosts ago. So going into the DNC this week, head writer Dan Amira felt a bit like he was “learning it all over again.” But few shows on television are better suited to adapt on the fly than Comedy Central’s late night gem.

“We’ve gotten very used to adjusting. I don’t think we’ve had a normal period at ‘The Daily Show’ for quite a while now,” Amira said.

Starting in 2020, the series filmed from Trevor Noah’s home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That was followed by a period when the show returned without a studio audience before last year’s unconventional season. For Dan Amira, the head writer for “The Daily Show,” winning the Emmy back in January for Best Variety Talk Series was really surprising, especially considering what certain outlets were saying in the lead up to the ceremony. “I certainly was not expecting it because I read Gold Derby! You had us like fourth or fifth and I read it and I was like, well, these are the experts,” he jokes with us during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). But the lowered expectations that our site provided him, actually helped him enjoy the experience even more. “I’m like, I guess I should just go in expecting to not win, which was actually great because if you win, you’re pleasantly surprised and if you lose, you’re like, well, I prepared for that.”

After Writers Guild of America waged a protest regarding the Television Academy‘s decision to move the outstanding writing for a variety series or special categories out of the upcoming Emmy telecast, the TV Academy has reversed course.

In a joint release sent out today, the Television Academy, Fox and the WGA said they were “happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst.”

Because this year’s Primetime Emmys has moved the variety special (live) category into the telecast (it was on the Creative Arts show last year), the TV Academy was likely looking to keep the telecast capped at 25 awards, so something had to fall out. And in this case, it was the variety writing field that originally got pushed to the Creative Arts ceremony.

The Daily Show continues to add funny folk to its roster.

The Comedy Central series introduced another new face last night, Grace Kuhlenschmidt.

Kuhlenschmidt is a stand-up comedian, actress and writer, who recurred in the final season of Max’s Search Party and was in the first season of Peacock’s Killing It.

During last night’s show, hosted by Desus Nice, Kuhlenschmidt was introduced in a skit alongside contributor Michael Kosta. Now that we have an answer to the question of whether one should take $500,000 or lunch with Jay-Z (Jay said take the money), the duo were answering the question themselves.

Kuhlenschmidt said that you should “definitely have lunch with Jay-Z” as he “probably has Beyonce’s phone number”.

The Daily Show is currently going through a lineup of guest hosts as it continues to search for a permanent one.

Last night, the Comedy Central show debuted a new twist – two hosts behind the desk.

Correspondents Michael Kosta, who has been hosting this week, the show’s first week back since the writers strike, and Ronny Chieng joined forces on Thursday night’s show.

It marked the first time that the show had two hosts behind the desk, a strategy that has been proposed as a new format going forward.

Last year, Deadline revealed that The Daily Show was considering hosting duos and trios to replace Trevor Noah with correspondents including Desi Lydic as a potential contender.

Chieng, who has starred in movies including M3gan and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, said, “Tonight, you’re getting two hosts for the price of one.”

The Daily Show is back with another group of guest hosts, some more familiar to the show than others.

Leslie Jones and Sarah Silverman are getting a second week behind the desk along with some other all-stars and show correspondents.

Jones hosted during the first week of the Comedy Central show’s return after Trevor Noah’s exit in January and will get another shot. She is thought to have been one of the names on a Paramount shortlist to get the job permanently, although some sources have cautioned that she might not want the job full-time.

That shortlist is also believed to include Chelsea Handler, who has regularly lobbied for the job, most recently during a spot on The Tonight Show, and is widely liked within the company after her appearance in February, as well as Hasan Minhaj, who was understood to have been close to landing the job...

After the majority of late-night shows revealed that they were returning next week, The Daily Show has set its own plan.

The Comedy Central series will return on Monday, October 16 with guest hosts for the rest of 2023. A new, permanent host is expected to take over in 2024.

The Daily Show faces a unique set of challenges after the writers strike ended given that Trevor Noah left last year and was initially replaced by a rotating set of guest hosts.

Guest host and correspondent Roy Wood Jr. was joined by former host Jon Stewart in a bid to help him go viral, aiding his cause to get the desk job on a permanent basis.

Stewart, dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi, appeared on Wood Jr.’s second day in the hot seat, otherwise known as Donald Trump Arraignment Day.

Exclusive: The Daily Show has been ticking along nicely with its phalanx of guest hosts including Chelsea Handler, Leslie Jones and Kal Penn.

The producers of the Comedy Central series are currently weighing up how they replace Trevor Noah in the hot seat come the fall, and one suggestion has been to continue the revolving roster of guest hosts on a permanent basis.

The ratings certainly suggest it’s working.

Comparing the first quarter of 2023 – Leslie Jones kicked off the new format January 17 – with the first quarter of 2022 when Noah was host, Deadline understands that linear ratings are up 13%. On the social side, views are up 16% in this period compared with last year.

Much of this has been done without much marketing; Deadline understands a push is being saved for when the new plan is in place later in the year.

Hundreds of WGA East members who work for Hearst Magazines Media are planning to stage a walkout Thursday to demand a fair contract. The half-day action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Et and will last the remainder of the day.

“WGA East members at Hearst have been bargaining a first contract for over two years and their last scheduled day of negotiations is March 28,” the guild said. “With only one bargaining session left, the Hearst Union is taking collective action with a unit-wide walkout in their fight for a fair first contract.”

Rallies in support of the walkout will be held at four locations: outside the Hearst Tower in Manhattan; at the Hearst offices in Easton, Pa; at the Hearst offices in Ann Arbor, Mi; and the Hearst offices in Birmingham, Al.

Barack Obama will appear as a guest on the Nov. 17 episode of “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah,” Variety has learned exclusively. The episode airs on Comedy Central at 11 p.m.

In conversation with Noah, the former president will discuss the Obama Foundation Democracy Forum and critical issues facing America and the world today. The interview will be Obama’s third with Noah, and his first in-studio. He previously appeared in a 2020 virtually taped episode, and did one of his final interviews as president with Noah at the White House.

The interview comes the week after the midterm elections that won the Republican party control of the House of Representatives — ending two years headed by the Democrats — and just days after Obama’s successor, the twice impeached Donald Trump, announced his bid to return to the White House in 2024.

Trevor Noah will say farewell as anchor of The Daily Show in December — and while the Comedy Central fixture will return in January, how it will look and who will front it remains up in the air.

Paramount Global announced Wednesday that Noah’s final Daily Show will air on Dec. 8. The week of shows leading up to his departure will feature a look back at some of the best moments from his seven-year run as the face of the show.

“The Daily Show” is hitting the road for midterms again. This fall, host Trevor Noah will take his Comedy Central late-night series to battleground territory in Atlanta, Ga.

While on-the-ground election coverage is nothing new for “The Daily Show,” which has previously moved to Ohio and Florida for midterms, the decision to head to Georgia for the first time is “highlighting key races and broader voting issues,” per the Paramount show. This also marks the show’s first time back on the road in a while, having just returned to its own home studio in New York City back in April following two years of doing the show remotely amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Noah will be recording full “Daily Show” shows from the Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta leading up to election night to cap off the late-night talker’s “Votedemic 2022” midterm election coverage. Episodes are set to air nightly from Oct.

But aside from working remotely, how many shows have drastically altered their format to deal with the current situation? That was the case with Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah.”

The winners of the 50th NAACP Image Awards were announced last night during the live broadcast on TV One from The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The live special was hosted by Anthony Anderson, who also doubled as a nominee.

The big winner of the night was “Black Panther” which took home eight trophies, including Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture, and Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture.

The Comedy Central series will set up shop at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater for a week of “undesked” shows. Florida is a hotspot for some of 2018’s most important election issues and Noah and company will air nightly starting Monday, Oct. 29 through Thursday, Nov. 1 at 11 Pm Et/Pt.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.

Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" won the Original Screenplay honor at the recently concluded Writers Guild Awards while Morten Tyldum's "The Imitation Game" took home the Adapted Screenplay trophy. "The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swarts" written by Brian Knappenberger won Documentary Screenplay award. The film is not nominated for an Academy award.

In TV land, HBO's "True Detective" won the Drama Series award and FX's "Louie" received the Comedy Series trophy.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) handed out top film honors to the screenplays of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The Imitation Game" Saturday night. On the television side, "Louie" and "True Detective" were favorites, winning two prizes each. Damien Chazelle's "Whiplash" competed in the original category at the WGA Awards, while the Academy's Writers Branch, in a rare move outside of guild designation, deemed it adapted due to the fact that a scene from the feature script was the basis of a short film that screened at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. So if "The Imitation Game" is to go on to Oscar glory, it will have to compete with Chazelle's popular film for the first time this season at the Feb. 22 Academy Awards ceremony. The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming.
