Spoilers for all of "Orange is the New Black" ahead.
"Orange is the New Black" is among the most important shows of the 2010s. It was not only one of the first series to establish the binge model as a viable release format — for better or worse — but it was also groundbreaking thanks to its diverse cast and the massive range of storylines it juggled at any given time. At its best, the show was riveting, funny, heartfelt, and bold. At its worst, it was still a fun time.
Most notably, few shows have ever felt so distinct from season to season. Season 1 was the fun fish-out-of-water comedy centering firmly around Piper (Taylor Schilling). Season 2 was a riveting prison drama centered largely on the Black inmates like Taystee (Danielle Brooks), Poussey (Samira Wiley), and Suzanne (Uzo Aduba). Season 3 was a surprisingly relaxed, lighthearted period, while season 4 took a brutal turn in the other direction,...

Oscilloscope Laboratories is teaming with Mailchimp once again for #SupportTheShorts, a free streaming event featuring a selection of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the global streaming platform Mailchimp Presents.
#SupportTheShorts launched last year when SXSW was canceled due to Covid-19 and hundreds of short filmmakers lost the opportunity for their work to be seen. To remedy this, Mailchimp partnered with Oscilloscope to give these short films and their creators a digital home where their work could be enjoyed from anywhere.
This year’s online edition of SXSW brings back the platform for filmmakers to showcase their art at the festival and to a broader audience. In addition to the film licensing, Mailchimp and Oscilloscope supplied hundreds of SXSW festival badges to 18 organizations committed to boosting opportunities for underrepresented communities in the film industry.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for the SXSW Film Festival once again, but here we are. For the 2021 iteration of the fest, SXSW is going virtual, which gives more people the opportunity to get to experience their brilliant lineup of films this year. As someone who is already well into my SXSW viewings for this year, I can confidently say that this might be SXSW’s best slate of Midnighters from top to bottom, and a few other genre and genre-adjacent films that are premiering in other sections are very much worth your time as well.
So, if you’re looking to check out some excellent horror and sci-fi cinema during this year’s SXSW from the comfort of your own home, here are 15 different projects you’ll definitely want to make time for. Oh, and because I included both How it Ends and Violation during my Sundance 2021 preview,...

Exclusive: ViacomCBS teen brand Awesomeness is developing horror-comedy Mer from Orange Is the New Black alum Julie Lake and Liz Storm. Laura Prepon is attached to executive produce and direct the project.
Co-created by Lake and and her longtime writing partner Storm, Mer is described as a splashy horror-comedy about martini-swigging, man-eating mermaids on Martha’s Vineyard. The series explores a young woman grappling with newfound power and female metamorphosis through the point of view of a marginalized townie turned killer mermaid. The satirical horror-comedy unpacks feminist themes through the eyes of a girl who must live with the dual demands of her bleeding heart and a sudden urge to eat people.
Lake, Storm and Prepon executive produce.

The sixth season of “Orange Is the New Black” hits Netflix Thursday at midnight Pt, and TheWrap is here to give you a quick refresher on where the drama series left off.
In case you forgot, the entire fifth season of “Ointb” takes place over the course of just a few days, as a riot breaks out at Litchfield after the death of Poussey (Samira Wiley).
In the finale, titled “Storm-y Weather,” Cert members get ready to break down the prison doors after days of negotiating terms and demanding the release of hostages the prisoners had taken. They’re going in with prison doors, smoke bombs and batons, handcuffing the inmates as they storm through the prison. There, they discover the dead Co Thomas Humphrey, who was shot by Daya (Dascha Polanco) in the first episode of the season. They start escorting the prisoners out of the prison, including Maritza...

The ladies in orange are back but things aren’t looking quite the same. Netflix has released the trailer for the upcoming season of Orange is the New Black. Check out the season 6 trailer below.
Following the women’s take over of the Litchfield Penitentiary in season 5, the women have been taken out of their “home” and put into a new maximum security prison. The women will have to adapt to the new the ways of the prison which means more rules, less freedom and new inmates. How will they manage? Will they stick together or fall apart?
The trailer starts off with a Good Morning, Vietnam reference followed by Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba) quickly realizing that she’s no longer home and out of her comfort zone. The next we see are bits and pieces of what problems the ladies will face adjusting to a maximum security prison – even...

When it comes to rewarding the best comedic cast on television, the SAG Awards often simply go with the biggest cast. Recent winners like “Orange is the New Black” (2014-2016), “Glee” (2009), “Desperate Housewives” (2004-2005) and “Ally McBeal” (1998) all prevailed thanks in part to having the most cast members on the voting ballot. Interestingly enough, all four of these were also hour-long dramedies, which suggests SAG voters are more apt to give the prize to large casts when they’re also in large productions.
What does this statistic mean in terms of predicting the 2018 SAG Awards? “Orange is the New Black” once again boasts the biggest comedy cast with a record-setting 45 men and women nominated for the Netflix prison series. That’s up from 37 cast members in 2016, 34 in 2015, and 40 in 2014. Of this year’s other nominated ensembles, Netflix’s “Glow” consists of 18 cast members, followed by HBO’s “Veep” at 15, ABC...

Image Source: Netflix The fifth season of Orange Is the New Black is filled with intense, dramatic moments, but it also has its fair share of levity, oftentimes courtesy of the drugged-out dynamic duo of Leanne (Emma Myles) and Angie (Julie Lake). If you've been wondering about the woman behind everyone's favorite meth head, Angie . . . well, you could probably bump into her on the street and never even know you did it. In fact, that happens to her all the time. In 2016, the actress relayed a story about how a starstruck fan actually asked Julie to take a photo of her with the Oitnb cast because the fan didn't recognize Lake as Angie. But that's the by-product of her fabulous "makeunder" for the show, which actually doesn't take as long as one might think. It turns out her meth teeth are painted on, so it only takes a few minutes...

We waited a long time for the fifth season of Orange Is the New Black, and it certainly did not disappoint. In addition to seeing more of "Skinhead" Helen and the drugged-out dynamic duo of Leanne (Emma Myles) and Angie (Julie Lake), we got a closer look at Carmen "Ouija" Aziza (Rosal Colon). Rosal plays a tough Dominican inmate who gets transferred to Litchfield and becomes part of Maria Flores's gang, but her makeunder definitely doesn't do her justice. Related70+ Awesome Snaps of the Oitnb Cast Being Real-Life Friends Judging from her Instagram photos, Rosal is a lot more glamorous and bubbly in real life. In fact, Rosal says the only thing she and Ouija have in common is their sense of humor. "My character in Orange Is The New Black is strong, intelligent, likes to joke a lot, is not afraid to be violent if you have to rectify a situation or if you have to defend your sisters," Rosal told People En Español in 2016. "What I have in common with my character is that we're both clowns, sometimes. Maybe not in the best situations but we like to laugh." While Rosal's transformation may not be as drastic as the others, we're still not sure if we would recognize her on the street.

Certain cast and crew members of Orange Is the New Black made it clear just weeks away from Election Day that they will not be voting for Donald Trump on Nov. 8.
Lea DeLaria, who plays Big Boo on the Netflix original series, took to social media Friday to share her disdain for the Gop candidate. Alongside costars Taryn Manning (Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett), Emma Myles (Leanne Taylor), Beth Dover (Linda Ferguson), Julie Lake (Angie Rice) and members of the show’s crew, the group of 1o women wore orange and black T-shirts with the phrase “Vaginas Against Trump” in all capital letters.

A bit of a change of pace this week as I'll be looking at the three episodes leading up to the third season finale of "Orange is the New Black" in order to leave the 90-minute, final episode to be discussed on its own. These were interesting episodes to watch together. All three take on controversial topics and several scenes were hard to watch. Sexual violence has been a topic explored to varying degrees of success this year on television (with "Game of Thrones" on one end and "Outlander" on the other of the success spectrum). "Orange is the New Black" feels uniquely positioned to confront the topic head on without flinching but still not come across as exploitative. Starting with "A Tittin' and a Hairin'" all three episodes belong to Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) to varying degrees. Her journey this season has added more of an understanding her character than...

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...
