Keira Knightley’s latest project is the Netflix spy thriller series Black Doves, which is set at Christmas in London. Netflix has already ordered a second series, such is its level of confidence.

The cast also includes Andrew Buchan, Kathryn Hunter, Sam Troughton, Ella Lily Hyland, Adam Silver, Ken Nwosu, Gabrielle Creevy and Omari Douglas.

The show, due to stream as we’re all opening our Peppa Pig advent calendars in December, is written by Joe Barton, who also wrote the terrific BBC series Giri/Haji.

The streamer has unveiled trailer and a slew of images promoting the show from Joe Barton, while revealing a premiere date of December 5.

Black Doves, which also stars Sarah Lancashire, is set against the backdrop of London at Christmas. It follows Helen Webb (Knightley), a quick-witted, down-to-earth, dedicated wife and mother — and professional spy. For 10 years, she’s been passing on her politician husband’s secrets to the shadowy organization she works for: the Black Doves. The show is the latest splashy offering from Netflix UK, which has made a slew of hits this year including Baby Reindeer and The Gentlemen. It is being co-produced by Sister, which has just seen its previous Netflix show, Kaos, axed after one season. Barton’s outfit Noisy Bear is co-producing.

The trailer for “Black Doves,” which debuts Dec. 5, introduces Knightley as Helen Webb, a dedicated wife and mother with a secret gig as a spy, where she passes on confidential information from her husband’s political work to an organization called the Black Doves. All is status quo until her spymaster, Reed (Sarah Lancashire) delivers the news that her lover, Jason (Andrew Koji), was assassinated.

“Was I the reason he was murdered, was I the target?” Knightley’s Helen asked Reed in the trailer, to which Reed responds, “You might’ve compromised yourself, and now it’s time to go to work.”

Keira Knightley is a spy now.

The actress will lead Netflix’s “Black Doves,” created by Joe Barton, opposite Ben Whishaw. It marks the actress’ first live-action TV role since she first rose to fame in “Bend It Like Beckham” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” as a teenager. Whishaw was last seen on TV screens on the BBC/AMC 2022 hit “This Is Going to Hurt.”

“‘Black Doves’ is a very exciting spy thriller set at Christmas in London,” Knightley said at a Netflix event earlier this year. The first season will contain six episodes, and Netflix has already renewed it for a second season (so: It sure feels like a cliffhanger is coming).

The Netflix spy thriller was first announced back in April 2023 as a U.K. commission, from in-demand writer Joe Barton and production company Sister (Chernobyl, The Power). Netflix, earlier during the 2024 Edinburgh TV Festival, announced it had already ordered a second season of Black Doves ahead of the first season’s debut.

Now, with the first look image (above) and teaser (below), Black Doves is taking shape, as Knightley plays a British agent whose cover is threatened when her secret lover is assassinated, and she goes looking for revenge.

Cobra Kai Season 6 is finally here and it’s even better than the last one, which no one thought was possible. The Netflix series follows the story of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), who has kind of left bullying and turned into a karate instructor. The series continues the story of the 1984 film The Karate Kid, in which Johnny lost the “All Valley Karate Tournament” to his enemy Daniel (Ralph Macchio). In the series, Johnny inspires weak kids to learn karate so that they can stand up to their bullies and fight to protect themselves. Review: Last year, Bill Skarsgård played a suave villain in Keanu Reeves’ John Wick: Chapter 4, but notably stayed out of the action scenes. Had the movie been released after Boy Kills World, I think the part would have been radically reimagined, with the actor putting himself through the kind of physical transformation that changes careers. Watching the hulking, 6’3 actor blast his way through opponents in Boy Kills World, it’s hard to believe that the same guy, just a few years ago, was best known as Pennywise the Clown. Indeed, Boy Kills World is the perfect launchpad for Bill Skarsgård to become a major action hero (it bodes well for his next film – the remake of The Crow).

Whew, it’s not even May, and the cinematic “body count” rises up considerably with another lone, determined warrior facing nearly insurmountable odds. I suppose this is more of the “John Wick” effect, as filmmakers try to “up the ante” and deliver a flick with near wall-to-wall frenetic action. So far this year we’ve gone from the spy showdowns of Argyle to the avenger of the elderly The Beekeeper, and winding up a couple of weeks ago with the manic Monkey Man. For this week’s thriller we’re sent to a near future time in an exotic foreign land as, in a nod either to old Variety newspaper headlines or the beloved ABC Tgif sitcom, Boy Kills World.

Famke Janssen is not sure what Marvel has planned for the X-Men saga but doesn’t shut the door on the idea of reprising her role of Jean Grey / Phoenix.

Janssen originated the X-Men role in the 2000 film and would go on to play the mutant in 2003’s X2 and 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. The actress also made cameos in 2013’s The Wolverine and 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.

“I don’t know. I mean, I didn’t expect to come back after dying as Jean Grey,” Janssen told ComicBook in an interview. “I came back as the Phoenix [The Last Stand], and I came back in flashback scenes in The Wolverine, and then in Days of Future Past.”

Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World is what happens when you toss The Hunger Games, Mortal Kombat, Happy!, and Crank into a blender. While that sounds rad, the slurry of upbeat action and nonsense plot tangles is much more baffling in execution. Mohr’s vision borrows heavily from button-mashy videogames and dystopian graphic novels, blending Cyberpunk futurism with real-world dictatorship commentaries. There’s a message about fascism and rebellion somewhere in Mohr’s madcap martial arts violence, but it’s lost under the piles of enemy corpses. Boy Kills World never knows the movie it wants to be past a killing spree, as the story makes one poor choice after the next, like a genre satire that becomes what it tries to parody.

You’ll almost immediately feel the vibes through the first two acts of Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World. Mohr’s film is a bloody, vicious kick to the solar plexus. The script drives its foot into the wound and then keeps applying pressure, almost as a way to test the audience’s resolve.

That’s where Boy Kills World may come to a crossroads for its viewership. Either you will embrace the sudden acute aggression, pressing the foot on the pedal, or you will border on torture porn violence. Or be so turned off by it to the point of completely giving up on Mohr’s film.

As for me, I’ll take Mohr’s blood-spattering dose of glorious, gory, comic carnage that would make Jackson Pollack jealous.
