It’s been a happy party daze from coast to coast and beyond as big stars get dressed to the nines and hit the scene, celebrating everything about the arts as we roll into the holiday season. Plus, early awards shows portend the coming nominations from the Academy, the Critics Choice Association and the top guilds including SAG, DGA and PGA; and “Avatar: The Way of Water” made a huge late-entry splash into the contender’s bracket.

On the surface, the newly released "Christmas with the Campbells" may look like your average holiday romantic comedy, the likes of which you'd see on the Hallmark channel. But that's exactly what producers Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley wanted you to think. Though the film retains the cheesy romance and holiday heart of those made-for-tv movies, it's also packed with hilariously raunchy one-liners and the kind of dialogue that you'll be absolutely shocked to hear in a holiday movie like this.
If you're not familiar with the premise of the movie, "Christmas with the Campbells" follows Jesse (Brittany Snow), whose life is thrown into upheaval when her douchebag boyfriend Shawn (Alex Moffat) breaks up with her just a few days before Christmas. However, since Shawn will be in New York City for the holidays, and his parents, the titular Campbells played by Julia Duffy and George Wendt, love Jesse so much,...

"Christmas with the Campbells" arrived in select theaters this past weekend, but people will more likely check out the surprisingly hilarious R-rated take on the Hallmark holiday romance formula by way of streaming on AMC+ or rental through the digital platform of their choice (it's only 5 right now!). With the film arriving at the perfect time, we're hoping it's finding an audience by providing a refreshing take on the dozens of made-for-tv movies that create a flurry of cheesiness around the holidays. If all goes well, it sounds like producers Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley and their Wild West Picture Show Productions banner may try deliver another one of these raunchy spins on holiday romance.

"Christmas with the Campbells" is coming to select theaters and AMC+ this weekend. If this is the first you're hearing of the movie, I cannot implore you enough to seek out this R-rated spin on the Hallmark holiday romantic comedy formula. Featuring a solid cast that includes Brittany Snow, Justin Long, and Alex Moffat, this production from Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley provides a raunchy, refreshing makeover of what has become a holiday staple for many people. Trust me when I say you'll experience some side-splitting laughter if you give this one a shot.
After becoming enamored with this jarring juxtaposition of nice holiday heart and naughty comedy, I spoke with director Clare Niederpruem, who has legit experience behind the camera of several Hallmark movies. "Christmas with the Campbells" is bringing some refreshingly raunchy comedy to the Hallmark holiday romance formula. For this new Christmas movie, producers Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley (star of "A Christmas Story" and its recent sequel), who have been friends since working on a CBS after-school special back in 1990, brought in bona fide Hallmark movie screenwriter Barbara Kymlicka to deliver your average holiday romance. But that was just the beginning. The plan was to take the script, about a messy break-up around Christmastime, and sprinkle in some R-rated humor that adds a little bit of naughty to everything that's typically nice about made-for-tv holiday romances. And that's exactly what they did.
Director Clare Neiderpruem, another Hallmark veteran, was brought in to take the helm, and "Christmas with the Campbells" came together with some surprising star power in the form of Brittany Snow, Justin Long, and Alex Moffat. All three are great as the primary characters,...

Every single year, it seems like there are at least a hundred new Hallmark holiday movies hitting cable and streaming services. No matter how cheesy, formulaic, or poorly acted these movies are, people can't seem to get enough of them. I'm not sure if most people are hate-watching them for a good laugh or if the holidays just have them seeking out the warmth of hammy holiday happiness and love. No matter what the reason, these movies are typically not for me. But thankfully, producers Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley have figured out a way to make these Hallmark holiday movies a little more appealing.
On the surface, the new holiday romantic comedy "Christmas with the Campbells" follows a familiar Hallmark movie formula. Brittany Snow ("Pitch Perfect") plays Jesse, whose life is thrown into upheaval when her douchebag boyfriend Shawn breaks up with her just a few days before Christmas.

On Tuesday, AMC+ and Rlje Films announced they have acquired worldwide rights to “Christmas With the Campbells,” a new holiday comedy based on an original idea by Vince Vaughn, who also co-wrote and co-produced.

Vaughn, Peter Billingsley (“Couples Retreat”) and Dan Lagana (“American Vandal”) produce under Vaughn’s Wild West Picture Show banner.
It’s the second project Vaughn and Billingsley have sold to Rlje, after 2021’s black Christmas comedy, “Silent Night,” which starred Keira Knightley.

If there’s one thing I know about real-world little women, it’s that they will read “Little Women” no matter the era. That’s the timeless quality of certain literary classics, and Louisa May Alcott’s Civil War tale of four close-knit sisters continues to delight, feeling every bit as alive today as it must have 150 years ago. In that span, the novel has never gone out of print, and its popularity seems unlikely to fade in the centuries to come.
Movies, however, are another matter. Young people seem far less interested in watching films made before their birth, and for that reason, there will always be good reason to remake “Little Women.” After all, every generation deserves its own version. It’s been 25 years since Winona Ryder played Jo March, and 61 more since Katharine Hepburn tackled the role for George Cukor (the previous screen versions had been silent). Now,...

Early read here on Universal’s Night School which is tracking for a $9.5M opening day and a weekend that’s between $27M-$29M. While $30M would be a sweet take, that’s still an impressive number in these times for a comedy, Uni had the previous best opening this year with its R-rated teen pic Blockers at $20.6M.
Warner Bros. animated pic Smallfoot will own second with a $6M Friday (a few cents more than their 2016 Storks $5.7M opening day), and a three-day that’s between $20M and $22.5M. Before 2018, Little Women wasn't exactly suffering for onscreen adaptations. There was the silent 1918 Paramount film, George Cukor's 1933 version, the 1949 Technicolor adaptation and 1994's star-studded iteration, not to mention at least 12 versions made for television.
So why, this year, is Louisa May Alcott's 1868 family story experiencing an onscreen renaissance? Consider the adaptations that have just been released, or are about to be: In May, PBS aired the BBC's fourth adaptation of the book, a three-part miniseries starring Angela Lansbury, Emily Watson and Maya Hawke.
On Sept. 28, writer-director Clare Niederpruem's version, which sets the classic ...

Clare Niederpruem’s adaptation of “Little Women” is billed as “the first-ever modern cinematic retelling of the classic story.” (Apparently they’re not counting the 2012 TV movie “The March Sisters at Christmas.”) This sounds like a promising approach; Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel was published 150 years ago, yet it remains as relevant as ever.
Alcott’s books grappled with the place of girls and women (and also boys and men) in the world, so there will always be room for thoughtful adaptations of her work. Indeed, this year brought a well-received miniseries to PBS, and Greta Gerwig is currently working on an interpretation starring Saoirse Ronan and Meryl Streep. Plus, of course, parents still show kids their own favorite versions, from 1933, 1949 and 1994.
But these efforts reflected a crucial understanding missing from Niederpruem’s feature debut: that we are all Jo. The girls in this contemporary retelling — which was produced...

What would the world of the March sisters look like in the contemporary era? Such is the concept behind Clare Niederpruem’s misguided take on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel “Little Women.” Released between last year’s well-received three-episode PBS miniseries and Greta Gerwig’s upcoming star-studded feature, Niederpruem’s debut will be remembered as a curiosity amongst otherwise stellar adaptations. Niederpruem, who adapted the book with Kristi Shimek, clearly has great affection for Alcott’s indelible sisters, but her film never goes beyond placing them in a contemporary setting and simply hoping for the best.
While there’s certainly room to explore Alcott’s biggest themes in the lives of modern women, here the results feel more hammy than revelatory. Sweet scenes in Alcott’s book are now suddenly weird and outdated, and only serve as uncomfortable evidence of the film’s poor execution. The intrusion of modern idioms also stings,...

When characters cry on screen, but the audience doesn’t cry in their seats, there’s a problem. Unfortunately, it’s not the only problem in director Clare Niederpruem’s “Little Women.” This contemporary adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s enduring classic is certainly admirable in its attempt to give the material a modern spin. However, what’s new only serves to frustrate and detract from the reasons why this material has been beloved for generations.
Niederpruem, along with co-writer (and editor) Kristi Shimek, updates Alcott’s source material with an unnecessary framing device in which present-day twentysomething Jo March (Sarah Davenport) is attempting to make her mark by writing an unforgettable novel. Can you guess what that novel will eventually be?
Jo was once a young girl yearning to “do all the things”, such as travel the world and be a playwright. Now, she’s just a frustrated fantasy-fiction writer,...

Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish are hoping that big laughs equal big bucks when “Night School” opens this weekend. Before the comedic duo can claim box office victory, however, they’ll have to fend off one adorable Yeti.
Universal’s “Night School” is eyeing a debut between $27 million and $35 million from 2,900 theaters. The film reunites Haddish with “Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee and producer Will Packer. The PG-13 comedy finds Haddish playing an unorthodox teacher helping Hart get his Ged. If estimates hold, the launch of “Night School” looks to be on par with “Girls Trip’s” $30 million start. That raunchy comedy became a sleeper hit, grossing over $140 million worldwide off its $19 million budget. “Night School” has a slightly higher price tag at $29 million.
Hart has long been a box office draw, but “Night School” will test the star power of Haddish in her first lead role since breaking...

Tagline: “Hell Hath No Fury Like a Demon Scorned.” Monarch Home Entertainment will release Steve Shimek's Nocturne next week. The film will be available on DVD. In the film, several friends gather for a night of fun. A ritual changes the tone, once a demonic spirit appears. Now, characters struggle to just survive. Nocturne stars: Clare Niederpruem (The Maze), Darien Willardson (Storm Rider) Melanie Stone, Colton Tran and Jake Stormoen. The film's official DVD artwork is here, along with the official release trailer. The artwork shows more of the film's supernatural element. A cross holds back the demon, which looks made of flame. The tagline: "hell hath no fury like a demon scorned" hints at the conflict, within the film. And, one character looks beleaguered as night closes in. Nocturne will be available at most DVD retailers. On July 25th, the film will be available at Amazon. This title...

I keep discovering the benefits of having Amazon Prime. Free shipping seems to be only the tip of the iceberg of perks. A huge perk is the Amazon Prime Video app that has free streaming for Prime members. This app not only has some unconventional titles amidst established classics, but it also has the capability to download films and TV shows to watch offline when time may be on your side, but Wi-Fi availability isn’t. I know other streaming apps have that functionality also, but from personal experience, the Amazon one seems to be the only one that works consistently.
Streaming has revolutionized the way we watch films.

There are just so many zombie films out there. So, new films entering the genre really need to stand out to get attention. K. King's first film as director does not really come across as showy. Instead, Zombie Hunter is a low budget affair that offers a laugh here or there, but the film's campiness removes any real tension. The film comes across as very awkward and artificial. Kevin King's Zombie Hunter film is an homage to '70s action flicks as seen in the film's first trailer. In the clip, the Hunter (Martin Copping) drives a vehicle that is reminiscent of Mad Max's V8 Interceptor. The protagonist comes across much like an anti-hero, which is also similar to George Miller's original feature. As well, the trailer hosts similar imagery from a horror classic. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is given some attention as a man swings a chainsaw about. He wears a grisly mask much like Leatherface in the 1974 feature. A young woman, of course, is his target. Why do killers love blondes so much? Zombie Hunter will release in 2013 and horror fans are encouraged to check out the film's first trailer here. Release Date: 2013. Director/writer: Kevin King. Fact: I will watch a Danny Trejo movie regardless of how inherently awful it is. And while I happen to think that director Kevin King’s undead opus “Zombie Hunter” actually looks pretty good, he should know that his film is guaranteed at least one viewing in Kentucky simply because of Trejo’s involvement. I don’t really care if he only has one line and a wink — that’s all it really takes to please me. Strange, but definitely true.
