Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Common Ground,” the fourth episode of “Outlander” Season 4.
When “Outlander” last left Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Hueghan), they decided to take Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) up on his offer to settle 10,000 acres of land in America in exchange for Jamie swearing an oath to the British crown. When Jamie signed the papers to make it official, the governor informed Jamie that he would need to be careful of which men he chooses as his tenants because Regulators (aka people rebelling against the Crown) were everywhere. Jamie talked a good game of seeming sympathetic to the Crown, but you could tell he didn’t care much for the British.
But all Jamie had to do was smile, nod and sign the papers and he, Claire and young Ian (John Bell) were off to Fraser’s Ridge. They left...

In the fourth installment of our ongoing video series, senior editor Rob Licuria and “Outlander” fan Paula Licuria dish the highs and lows of each episode week to week of this chapter of the fantasy romance saga based on “Drums of Autumn,” Diana Gabaldon’s fourth novel in the series of books (watch the video above). And watch our previous recaps for the first episode, second episode and third episode.
In “Common Ground,” the fourth episode of season four of the Starz hit drama “Outlander,” Claire (Caitriona Balfe), Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Young Ian (John Bell) begin to build a home at Fraser’s Ridge in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their efforts are stymied by unwelcoming neighbors and a bloodthirsty bear that ravages their settlement. When they seek the advice of mountain man John Quincy Myers (Kyle Rees), the Frasers learn they may be dealing with a more dangerous creature than they first believed.

After spending the first two Season 4 episodes solely with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) in the new world, “Outlander” is finally checking in with what Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) were up to in the 1970s.
Roger sold his father’s house in Inverness to his father’s housekeeper Fiona (Iona Claire) and her husband, then set off for America to perform at a Scottish festival in North Carolina. He stopped in Boston first to see Brianna and she accompanied him on his trip south. These two were obviously smitten with one another and had a wonderful time dancing and bonding at the festival, but things took a sour turn that night.

The fourth season of Starz's Outlander pushes Claire and Jamie further into uncharted territory in colonial America and offers a chance to meet several new characters. Some of them, like the nefarious pirate Stephen Bonnet, cannot be trusted. Some, like Jamie's Aunt Jocasta, are trying to keep the peace as best they can in this new land and new set of rules. Some, like Rollo the dog, are just plain adorable.
And then there's John Quincy Myers. First introduced in season four's second episode, "Do No Harm," the character is played by Welsh actor Kyle Rees. He's a jovial, hairy delight who can both educate the new Americans on the proper way to respect the Cherokee tribespeople who already call this land home and serve as another mentor to Jamie's nephew Ian (John Bell), who must be aching to talk to someone who isn't a relative by now. Later,...

In the wake of Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers) robbing Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) in the “Outlander” season four premiere, the weary travelers still managed to make it to River Run, a stunning North Carolina plantation run by Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy), who was left blind by glaucoma. Jamie was slightly ashamed to show up penniless, but Jocasta welcomed them with open arms. Still, it was not an easy road as almost immediately Claire and Jamie experienced what it was like to see slaves working such land up close and personal.
And Jocasta’s motives were not entirely selfless anyway. She knew that it would benefit her to have a man like Jamie around. Remember, this was 1767 — Jocasta was definitely fending off advances from men...
